My father who is a Christian mind you watched this movie on pay-per-view without having any idea that it was a rapture movie... and even HE turned it off 10 minutes in. He later told me, and I quote... "it sucked."
will you share this review with your father? You 2 can have some fun watching Sean make fun of it. Also I realized 2 things: 1. Sean's comment on the jump scares, they're resorting now to what most modern horror films now do for a cheap scare? 2. How nothing happens most of the time. So basically it's doing what the Twilight movies do a lot?
My family and I are Christians and together we were laughing our asses off at how horrible this movie was when we watched it on DVD , we spent most of the movie arguing over whether or not Nick Cage's hair was a toupee. (I still say it is.)
Well, it's clear the entire budget went into hiring big-name actors. By the end the only budget that had left would only allow for half a skinned beaver and some dust bunnies.
Yes Earthquake's have always happened so when Jesus says there will be earthquakes he means like have never happened before kind of like in movies when they say I'll give you a signal and they say what's the signal and they reply you'll know when it happens lol
"Why are natural disasters a sign now if they've existed since the world was formed?" Amen to that. I am a christian and this is a lame excuse for scaremongering.
I'm also a Christian and it makes me sick to my stomach when preachers go on TV and imply that a hurricane or earthquake hit a certain location because of gays or some other sin yet when something hits their neck of the woods crickets....
And they get you coming and going, too! There are natural disasters and wars in the world? Sign of the End Times! Things calm down? People are saying "peace and safety," which is another Sign of the End Times!
Don't forget Cameron "Buck" Williams. "Seriously, they call you 'Buck'?" - Nicolae Carpathia fighting with Rayford and Cameron on top of a mountain in my ideal Left Behind
I actually saw this movie theatrically. Why? Like I told the ticket person who sold me the ticket, "It's Nicholas Cage in a religious movie, it should be hilarious!" It was not. I thank you for that review.
DovahSpy Yes. At least in This is The End they spent money on effects, sets and big named actors. Even that episode of American Dad is a better rapture story.
You can tell that Cage REALLY didn't want to be here. He can usually make bad movies amazing, like Wickerman, but in this case you can really tell that he's thinking of his next house repayment to get him through the film.
My buddy loves bad movies, like REALLY loves watching bad movies. He paid to see Cats in theaters bcuz he "had to know" and he still found it okay. And yet, I remember him paying to see Left Behind in theaters and when we met up afterwards, he told me he had actually walked out with half the audience. The other half, he said, were roaring with laughter. Apparently, the Rapture flash scene was given the same vocal energy as a sports commentator during a soccer game when a player scores a goal. 🤣
It just occurred to me that the rapture could work pretty well as a premise for a black comedy. There's so many scenarios you could create with the random disappearances, social and religious commentary, or just plain highlighting the absurdity of the situation. Of course, that would need a much more creative ,well, creator with no religious agenda.
@@SH0CKM4NPWN3R The similarity between Thanos and God is that they are both not real. The difference between Thanos and God is that no one is stupid enough to believe that Thanos is real.
I've said this once and I will say it again: I find it really annoying that the only good Christian movies are animated(Prince of Egypt) and not directly Christian in writing(Bruce Almighty and Chronicles of Narnia). I'd count The Ten Commandments but I haven't seen it, so I can't
I know!! Most movies do not portray God or the bible right! For example.... "Noah". What was that crap?! It was entertaining but not good in the way it was supposed to be!
LavenousForever There was another one based off the story of Hosea that wasn't "awful", but it felt like a high school play. Then there was a Family man knock off (yes there exists a family man knock off. Believe it or not it did at least two things better than it). And then Fire Proof was okay. Then we have Saved...heheheh...*burns it with a blowtorch* A lot of these are at least tolerable, but they are kinda...unmemorable. Like seriously I'm just sitting here waiting for someone to top Prince of Egypt.
I love your reviews man. I think I religiously, pun intended, started watching a review a couple years ago. I watched cinematic sin's "last airbender" and saw your Last Airbender movie review. The rest is history from there.
14:23-14:34 I lost it with the satellite part. "Did the satellites get raptured too?! I'm pretty sure the satellites don't believe in Jesus. *looks up* Dirty heathens." 😅😅😅😅. I guess their belief is UFOs and technology.
"Why are all these natural disasters suddenly signs of the end of the world?" Well if you listen to this movie's target audience it's because gay marriage is legal in the US.
Absolutely love your unique critiques of Christian culture. I feel like I have been too close to the problem for too long and appreciate the different perspective
Thank you, Sean, once again for your continuing successful efforts in entertaining us with your unique reviews of great and crappy movies! Between CE, MST3K, and Rifftrax, I'll never have a day without laughter!
Apparently LaHaye hated this adaptation as well. I saw a quote from him where he stated' “It’s probably the worst script I’ve ever read... And I’ve read scores of them.” So, yeah, there is that also... And in terms of the "If God is good why do bad things happen" argument, I think it's a case of the writers of Christians films (A) never really having to wrestle with that question themselves and sort it out, and (B) lacking the skill to place themselves on both sides of the issue and write competent, compelling arguments, which is a MUST for a good portrayal of a debate in a film or play.
Funny thing about the 'No kissing' as an actor. Years ago there was this real life couple of singers. She got cast as Snow White and she refused to get kissed by the actor playing the Prince. Dude, you auditioned for SNOW WHITE, you knew what was coming xD They recast her, after all the posters were already printed. I wonder how she had avoided it all through rehearsals xD
Dude, sorry I just now clicked the video and haven't seen the whole review yet but I gotta say this whilte its fresh! That shirt is f*cking awesome! Now that that's said I'm going to watch the review :)
In this movie's defense (God, I feel dirty just typing those words) the Bible makes it pretty clear that, while God is GOOD, He is not by any means NICE. He's shown us the way out of this mess we've made for ourselves, but He's not going to hold our hands the whole way.

2wingo I wouldn't say that the bile makes clear that God is good. I would say that it *claims* that God is good. But, in writing, there tends to be this show-don't-tell rule.
+TheKeyser94 About the iron chariots, the Israelites once lost a battle because one soldier kept some loot for himself, and Eli's sons lost the ark of the covenant to the philistines because they were giving the tabernacle a bad name. In one battle victory or defeat depended on whether Moses could keep his arms in the air. Whether someone will win or lose depends entirely on what God decides and you will win only on his conditions. Besides they beat the iron chariots a short time later.
I remember when I was a kid, my mother had me convinced the rapture was going to happen any time, and forced my siblings and I to watch any movie about the biblical end times that she can get her hands on.... And one of them was Kirk Cameron's left behind.
Great job once again, Sean! I take my hat off to you for watching some of the biggest "Cinematic Excrement," out there. I can't wait for your next video. I've watched the Cinema Snob Midnight Screening of this movie, so it was good to see your take along with actual clips.
Haha, Nick Cage. There is a meme out from a while ago of Cage sitting in a restaurant holding his hand up when offered a basket of rolls (saying he doesn't want them) and the caption was, Nicolas Cage finally refuses a roll.
Going back to watch your old reviews. I have to say, they're all aging very well. Honestly have no idea why you have so few subscribers. You definitely deserve more; maybe it's the name of your channel. Anyway, I enjoy your film reviews.
The old lady on the plane probably killed her first husband in order to marry the one she was with on the plane. She's been living with that secret during their entire marriage. That's why she didn't get snapped away
I am so thankful that we never got the sequel to this...Thank God! The Pastor scene was better in the 2000 TV movie. I have to say the 2000 movie was much better as far as its own self awareness and at least it made sense why things were happening in the 2000s movie
LavenousForever read the bible then. This movie made him look like a fluffy bunny compared to the things he's done in the Old Testament and his son preaches in New Testament.
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out. I was christian back then and my mom made us go watch it, and I shit you not, the people up in the projector room literally shut the movie off halfway through, and had us all leave because of how bad it was, and as we were all going out, they gave everyone their money back. Let me just say, they did us a fucking favor. I’m 22, and I was a young teen then, and this movie kind of took my film virginity in a way; it, along with Howard the Duck, was the first time I realized that movies could suck.
Two things: 1) I mistakenly thought this was a slasher movie about a killer who collects Left butt-cheeks. 2) The rapture, as defined in this movie actually happened but it was just a couple of people and no one noticed.
Most faith-based movies are made by people who don't know film making, but that is starting to change with "I Can Only Imagine." good direction, acting, and pacing plus the best performance by Dennis Quaid of his career.
The problem with this movie is the 'naner' factor. The movie makes a clear distinction between believer and non-believer and kinda makes the believers act like their better b/c we're more faithful. It then whisks the believers up to heaven and focuses on the people who weren't good enough to get into heaven. "Naner, naner, naner!"
I like to think that the Muslim guy isn’t a true believer but is instead keeping up a facade for his family and even himself. He wants to believe but there’s something that holds him back emotionally, like some kind of traumatic experience in his youth that shattered his faith. See how awesome I just made that character?!
"You can see the clouds through her head". That's nothing, if the people who believe in this stand sideways, you can see daylight on the other side when you look in their ear.
You know, it's funny--half a millenia ago, religion and religious people were the motivation for, and patrons and creators of, the finest art in the Western world. It was so good that the best pieces are still revered today as priceless cultural treasures made by peerless masters whose names we still remember, like Michelangelo. But somewhere in the intervening centuries, religious people completely and utterly lost their artistic tastes, and now the stupidest, hackiest, shittiest propaganda is the only type of art that religion--at least christianity--produces; and it's definitely the variety of art that christians--at least the born again variety--prefer. There's a subtextual message there, I think.
