The biggest insult this movie has is that the animation is too good for it. Sure it's not Disney but it's a hell of a lot better than this movie deserves.
And would you believe it's from the same animation studio that did "The Iron Giant"? And the box office returns for this movie were so bad that it pretty much killed the studio. That makes me hate this movie and Adam Sandler even more.

The studio never make a good movie they just make nothing but shitty movies with no effort, no thought or care put into them, it shows in Bucky Larson born to be a (porn) star, it shows in jack and Jill, it shows in pixels, it shows in little Nicky, it shows in that’s my boy, it shows in bedtime stories, it shows In Eight Crazy nights (minus the animation i don’t know why it looked so beautiful to look at or why it is the only best part of this movie don’t ask me why), it shows in master of disguise, and it shows in every happy Madison movie ever!!!! Oh God, Punch Drunk Love... I think the tragedy of Adam Sandler is that when Robin Williams and Jim Carry did more dramatic work it was more embraced if not entirely their more popular work, but when Adam Sandler tried it, it was like no one wanted to know, so the result was his comedies getting progressively worse until the aforementioned That's My Boy, Pixels and Jack and Jill.
I've noticed that a lot. How come when Robin and Jim did serious roles, people gave them love but when Adam does it, nobody gives a shit? Not saying Robin or Jim are bad at serious roles (hell, Robin was able to impress a lot of us with his serious roles,), but it's weird that Adam doesn't get any recognition for it. It can't be because of the "Lol Adam acts like a child" considering Robin and Jim did something like that in their films.
I still enjoy Spanglish, partly because Sandler plays an actual grown-up and has real grown-up problems to deal with. And isn't the sole focus of the film.
Personally I can't stand Adam Sandler when he does comedy. It's just not funny. But I really liked him in "Punch Drunk Love". It just goes to show that he has acting talent but it's the fans out there that want his stupid comedies.

It's him and Carey Mulligan and from the guy who won an emmy for his direction on Chernobyl. Overall that's a combination of people that should produce another genuinely good dramatic role for him.
There were a few LB songs on a couple movie soundtracks, but as far as I'm concerned Fred Durst hasn't done a full soundtrack for a movie. Well, except for that one song from Mission: Impossible 2...
I'm so glad you brought up Punch-Drunk Love cause I love that movie. But it also made me hate Sandler even more, because someone who will do a script like that isn't stupid. Sandler chooses to be stupid by choice.
He rakes in oodles of cash by regurgitating the same tired juvenile garbage, he's not stupid, he's just taking the easy route to make money and spend time with his friends and family. Cuz one thing I have heard quite consistently about him is that he seems to be a nice guy.
Also, when the cops try to arrest him for breaking and entering, he runs from them instead of turning himself in. In other words: 1. Vandalism 2. Assault 3. Theft 4. Attempted Murder 5. Breaking and Entering 6. Resisting Arrest Still no jail.

The one thing I'll give this film, it has godamn gorgeous animation. You can just feel every frame was lovingly worked on and we dont get anything like this anymore. Even at the time its impressive for a non Disney studio. It's just a shame it's attached to such a godawful movie
I remember seeing ads for this on Nickelodeon back when I was 9. You heard right. They actually showed ads for this dumpster fire of a film on a children's television network.

As shoddy as this movie is, I can't believe how well it's animated. Some serious talent went into making this, only to be used it on one of Sandler's failures.
It's been a few years, but I just can't help but comment when I watch reviews of movies like this. What I hate so much about it isn't that it's bad, it's that it was so bad when it had so many instances where you could see glimpses of actual quality. The animation was really good. The music could actually be pretty good when you're looking solely at the instrumental aspects, without the poor lyrics and annoying voices. The story itself could easily have been at least decent, since it's using the classical Scrooge element as a basis. Even without that, you could certainly tell a compelling story about a man who suffered a tragedy in his youth, lives a harsh life and acts like a jerk in adulthood, and eventually has to confront his problems or suffer the consequences (and with the help of someone who sees that he can be a better person, manages to do so). You could also make a decent raunchy comedy with the setup of a snarky asshole who hates the holidays, especially when pairing him up with an overly-cheery and optimistic counterpart. There were just so many elements of this movie that could have been great - or at least passable - and that makes it so much more frustrating that they did so little with it. Especially since Sandler has shown on several occasions that he *can* be a genuinely funny comic and play a great serious and heartfelt character.
If there's one thing I will give Happy Madison credit for, it's that not only did they attempt to make a Holiday film centered on Hanukkah, but also show that animation is not always something for kids and can be something made for adults as well, even though this has been already shown by Ralph Bakshi, Seth MacFarlene, Tomm Moore, Brad Bird, Nora Twomey and Genndy Tartakovsky. The direction is sloppy and the story is beyond poorly done, but at least they tried something different with their typical film making.
The "ode to capitalism" actually wasn't paid for. According to the commentary, they just asked all those companies for permission to use their names because they said it was easier than making up a bunch of names. That's lazy but not greedy

Toyland Flores I suppose that's his choice. I usually listen to his videos rather than watch them so I didn't notice that on my first viewing. I just wanted to give the movie a fair shake. Not to mention, I don't see why they would lie about that.

16:35 In regards to the 35th Annual All Star Patch subplot for this movie, I think Whitey chose to have Davey do community service as a basketball referee not just because he knew Davey the longest, but he’s hoping that helping Davey overcome his biggest psychological slump of losing his parents as a kid, which made him act like a total prick to everyone, except for Benjamin of course, would help Whitey be one step closer to winning the Patch.
The weird thing about Sandler is that he started his career as a comedian who isn't funny and then got intermittent chances to show that he is actually a really good straight actor. Most actors do this in reverse and the most obvious example is Al Pacino...in Adam Sandler films. Actors, generally speaking, don't make good comedians. A lot of good comedians do make good actors. Adam Sandler isn't a good comedian. Al Pacino isn't a good comedian. Nor is Robert De Niro. Best stick to what you're good at.
Mr Deeds was a film that had no right to exist, and yet wasn't that bad. I have no idea who was clamoring for a remake of a Frank Capra film starring Adam Sandler, but...yeah, it was okay. It wasn't GREAT, but I left the theater satisfied.

Obviously I don't know Adam Sandler personally. But considering the roles he keeps writing for women and racial minorities in his movies, I don't get the impression that he's a stand up guy who just makes crappy movies. I'm not saying being creatively bankrupt always translates to being morally bankrupt. But art is about worldview to a certain extent, and if your art is shit, sometimes that suggests your worldview is shit too. I mean the dude's not subtle. He constantly writes himself into his movies as a Gary Stu who succeeds to spite being shamelessly mediocre and often times not even a nice person, and yet actresses that are way out of his league inexplicably are motivated to fuck him anyway. And as a woman, can I just say ew. I'm sure Adam Sandler has groupies, and I'm not looking to kink shame anyone. But personally the thought of being one of these hot actresses cast as the romantic lead in a Happy Madison comedy makes me want to puke. He's not ugly. But the older, richer, and more established in Hollywood he becomes, I just think he gets more and more gross. You smell like the movies you make, is all. Also, wasn't there a controversy where one of the movies he made, investors didn't see their share of the money, or something like that? Red Letter Media put forward that accusation at some point. Then again, the cast of Half in the Bag is also vaguely sexist and gross, so....
