Cirrus SR22 Landing in a Snowstorm with ATC Audio

This video shows a real world situation I encountered this week. I took off VFR in clear, blue sky and then encountered a rapidly moving squall line with heavy snow. I had to get a "Pop up IFR Clearance", had to do a missed approach and then finally a really tough landing in a snowstorm.

Thanks … I really don’t go looking for these situations… but I fly with cameras rolling on every flight and sometimes I think it would make an interesting video :-)

Well done....all actual approaches are stressful.....but a popup, with a go around can really ramp up the stress levels....you handled it very well.

Nice work, learn that autopilot, it can fly coupled to mins. For missed, press the toga switch which will put you in pitch and roll mode set to climb straight and will start the missed procedure in the FMS. You establish a climb (full throttle and rudder as needed, autopilot will bring nose up), clean up, switch to nav mode and IAS or FLC. It will fly the published missed for you, all coupled. If tower gives you a vector, dial it in then press hdg. Just don't forget to bug the Missed Approach altitude at your last step down on the approach. (If you do forget you'll know, bug the correct altitude, make sure IAS is still set for climb and you are in Nav or hdg mode and the autopilot is still coupled.) It's a great system, I've been flying a perspective 20, check ride soon. Take care.

Thanks! ... Makes total sense now on the ground.... Since that day, I practiced the exact same manuever in clear, blue sky! .. Works exactly as you described!!

Great points Paul. Obviously it is easier for us to do from our living room than being there in the heat of the moment. Something else I noticed was that the “ minimum” call out came and then you continued down for a bit before you reacted and made your final decision to go missed. This could get you in trouble if you were flying an LPV or an ILS as the minimums are likely 200 ft AGL. A tip is to do audible call outs for the last 500 feet before minimums and as soon as you hit minimums immediately hit the TOGA, and do the rest as Paul indicated. Great flying otherwise and glad you made it down safely.

Epic video! Epic situation! Great job TJ! Perfect situation for where a VFR pilot ends up in an IFR situation and dies! Did notice your flaps did not come up on your missed approach. Nice to see videos where guys are gaining experience and are sharing, thanks.

The VOR-A has lower minimums (760', 1 mile vis). You should have selected that approach. You can legally use your GPS and autopilot to track it as long as you use a VOR nav source (like a bearing pointer) to monitor the NAV source (the VOR in this case). On the missed approach, you had the flaps still deployed. 3 UPs: "Power up, Pitch up, Clean up."
@TJFlyingAdventures
@TJFlyingAdventures 5 лет назад
aviatortrevor that’s a good idea 💡... I didn’t think of that at the time

@@TJFlyingAdventures In ForeFlight, if you go to the airports page and select an approach to view, you can use a 3-finger swipe to quickly go through all of the approaches at that airport. Then you can quickly figure out which one has the lowest minimums. Does your Cirrus have a TOGA button on the throttle? If so, that's probably how you initiate the missed approach, followed by unsuspending the GPS waypoint sequencing and selecting NAV mode (but consult your G1000 and autopilot manuals)
@TJFlyingAdventures
@TJFlyingAdventures 5 лет назад
aviatortrevor good ForeFlight tip ... my cirrus does have the TOGA button ... I should have pressed TOGA and let the autopilot fly the published miss ... I tried it a week later under clear blue sky and it worked perfectly!

That was awesome TJ! Loved the narrative and the overlapping view insets on final. Unbelievable conditions! You should've come over to Sky Acres instead and hung out for a bit before going back to Dutchess! ;-) Really enjoyed this clip and I was on the edge of my seat like Jim too! A lot of firsts in that one... heck I never heard of holding on the runway before! haha! and going from VFR to (serious!) IFR on final! wow! loved it!

Great job under pressure. One small critique: POH says clean up flaps on the missed. Looks like they were 50% until you made it to the hold?

Looks like you left your flaps down on the missed. Is that typical for the SR22?
@TJFlyingAdventures
@TJFlyingAdventures 2 года назад
Flaps to 50% until 90 knots, positive rate of climb and clear of obstacles, Then flaps up… obviously I was in IMC … so clear of obstacles is judged by the synthetic vision
@jdmerrit

You should never go full flaps unless you have the field in sight.

If the visibility was so bad that you couldn't taxi, how did you have legal visibility to continue the approach? The FAA likes to watch RU-vid videos and impose penalties. Be careful what you post! Maybe you got "socked in" just after touchdown...
@TJFlyingAdventures
@TJFlyingAdventures 5 лет назад
This was a highly unusual situation... I was absolutely legal to land! ... When I was down, I was relieved and happy to wait it out as the squall passed by. (I don't claim to be a perfect pilot. But this was a very legal situation that will absolutely stand up to any FAA scrutiny) I post this to show real world IFR situations.
