I can't believe you tired to pass off the carroccio as real.

I enjoyed the video, but I did want to make a quick comment concerning the Genoese Crossbows. This was an actual historical military corps, they were actually quick famous, and incredibly feared for centuries. They actually were so deadly during a particular war, that there were orders to remove the fingers of any captured Genoese Crossbowmen, just due to the fact they were so effective.

Hot damn! Shows what I know about that part of Italy -- I've only covered Venice, the early Lombards, and late Rome thus far on my channel, so the rest of the peninsula is unfortunately completely opaque to me. Thank you so much for the clarification, that's really good to know and definitely makes me dislike the unit substantially less. Though the attack bonus versus cavalry still feels very weird!

Tbh, it's so obvious that you are having fun with what you are doing with this channel and it's so nice to see history, games and positivity in one combo like this. It really makes me wish that your channel will grow larger over time and that perhaps you might have your own mod or even very own game that is like Age of Empires. Keep up the good work, mate.

That is exceptionally kind of you to say my friend. Thank you so much for the words of support. I've been really pleased with the channel's growth recently, so I think there's a decent chance we continue to make waves! Who knows? Maybe somebody I can bring you guys a game of my own as well!

Genoa was famed for sending their crossbowmen to aid their allies, especially during the Crusades. They were literally known as Genoese mercenaries whom wielded crossbows. During the First and third Crusades the Genoese crossbowmen decimated the Saracen cavalry and their cavalry archers. Hence why they get that highly fitting bonus.
@robbylava

A couple other people mentioned this to me as well, I had no idea! I guess the Genoese Crossbowman gets a pass

A katana's whole benefit is their ease of drawing the sword, so faster attacking does make a lot of sense in that regard
@robbylava
@robbylava Месяц назад
I would definitely disagree with the idea that that was the whole benefit of the weapon, but it's certainly one element and is a big part of the "samurai trope" that the devs were no doubt working off of. I actually mentioned that very thing in my original talk with Crab, but I ended up cutting it for time lol. We had a couple of 5 to 10 minute rants that I didn't want to subject you guys to hehehe
@annaairahala9462
@annaairahala9462 Месяц назад
@@robbylava Skallagrim actually did a video about it recently. The trope is that its cutting power is good, but that's something completely dependent on an individual sword's make and very little to do with the actual shape. The benefit it had was its ease of draw and return, something that is a bit stereotyped as well but at least more accurate
@robbylava
@robbylava 28 дней назад
@annaairahala9462 just watch the video, really cool! Thanks very much for the recommendation, I will be honest I had no idea just how appropriate that trope was. So maybe it does make some sense after all, even if I'm guessing the devs came at it from a slightly more pop culture perspective heheheh

The most important economic technology in the game is actually probably double bit axe. It's such a massive boon so early. The reason we don't consider Burmese economy similar to Vikings is because 1.) The lumber camp upgrades are cheaper, so they're easier to prioritize. 2.) You can research them without stalling villager production, so you don't need to balance villager production against the upgrade. Edit: I also agree that the Hwacha should be the Korean UU (they don't even need to change the functionality much lol), but to be fair, I believe there is some attestation that Koreans did use wagons defensively sometimes in warfare (not that I know if the original devs were aware of this at the time). The Hwacha was somewhat incorporated into the original Korean Onager bonus I believe, as Shinkicheon is a reference to the Hwacha's projectiles.
@robbylava
@robbylava Месяц назад
This is a reasonable point. And yes, the Koreans do seem to have used wagons in warfare, though from everything I can find it seems to have been quite rare. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts!
@bjarkekiaer
@bjarkekiaer Месяц назад
This was fun to watch. It's always interesting to see how someone unfamiliar with a game would look at things from it. I'd say the Korean war wagon and the Swiss both stood out from their other options - the war wagon being the only name in English and the Swiss didn't have that little sheen on the shield. Also, and this is a bit of speculating, but considering there are native words/names that more or less translate to "thing that does stuff" or similar, names like the Genoese Crossbowman arent really that egregious. (A somewhat unrelated example I can give is from Elden Ring. The game has a curved sword weapon called Grossmesser - because it messes grossly with your enemies, yeah? But it's also German for "great knife". And what makes it even better is the game has a knife weapon that is literally called Great Knife. Yup.) Thanks for the video! I'll look forward to part 2.

Why DO Vikings get wheelbarrow for free? Did they steal it from someone? Edit 1: The Germans in AoE3 did have a unique card to boosts their Uhlans called winged hussars. The Uhlan is a unit more accociated with Poland too iirc, and they also get war wagons. Like hussite ones.

@gaius_iulius_megas
@gaius_iulius_megas Месяц назад
Winged hussars was not a upgrade, you just got a bunch of regular hussars (armour and wings were imaginary), Uhlans were widely used in Europe, the problem with the uhlan is not the polish origin it's that they historically were lancers which they definetly aren't in the game. The hussite war wagon is stupid af and one of the reasons I don't like to play the Germans.
@ConscriptDavid
@ConscriptDavid Месяц назад
@gaiusiulius7724 With the recent updates p. Sure they get the wings, but also iirc the card gave your uhlans a slightly upgrade, no?
@gaius_iulius_megas

@@ConscriptDavid since the "Knights of the the Mediterranean" dlc you get actual winged hussars, before that they were regular hussars, this card never had anything to do with Uhlans.
