Really underrated UA, not paying for roads and being able to treat all hills tiles (even with forest on top) as plains for movement means that this civ can be a commercial powerhouse. The terrace farm also ensures plenty of food in most terrain, so can be a contender in most starting positions with few exceptions. The slinger ability is also very useful- while you're not going to be using them for long, upgrading the ones you make is worthwhile for the retreat ability.

2:25 I can imagine strange spirits dancing around a greedy explorer who invaded an Inca temple for it's gold... An ancient curse on those who seek to steal from the tomb of the Sapa Inca. Faster and faster they circle around their prey as mysterious drum beats gain tempo. Slowly, as their strange dance closes in, the explorer is driven to insanity. The room seems to heat up as the walls appear to spin. It's all in his head, but it feels so real. Then he collapses. Then he becomes one of them. The cycle continues when the next explorer shows up.

The Inca had many calendars too, since each culture developed their own calendar, according to recent studies. But the Incas themselves (not including the other andean societies) developed a calendar of 13 months based on the moon phases and another one based on the sun, but not much is known due to they developing a "fiber technology": They recorded everything on fiber which was destroyed or easily burned. Their fiber tech was so good that the Spanish changed steel armor for fiber armor.

Well, the Inca's weapons were pretty "barbaric" when compared to muskets and cannons, but it is all in definition. If "barbaric" means "primitive," then yes the Inca were militarily barbaric. But if "barbaric" means its most usual meaning, "inhumane," a flame thrower is barbaric despite being advanced. The Inca had an army a European had the right to scoff at, but what the Inca should get credit for is civil engineering and mathematics even more advanced than that of the Europeans.

I remember a game I was playing as Japan, I allied the Inca after a time where they were plotting against me (probably got scared cause I was building an army), and we both attacked America, who were my closest neighbours. I slowly but surely got rid of the American navy (we were on Archipelago) with Bombers and boats while my Zero were protecting my boats from getting bombed. I finally managed to make a clear way to Washington, and as I was about to send a land troop in Washington to capture the city, I saw the amssive Inca float coming nearby. I was like "Too late man, war is over". Then I capped Washington and the Incas were like "AWWWWWWW" and came back where they were. I laughed my ass off.

The conquest of the Inca actually took over 40 years. When Atahualpa was executed, the Spanish started to break a delicate political and social balance that had already been shaken by war and smallpox. Those that belonged to Huascar's panaka (a royal house/lineage), allied to the Spanish since they were Atahualpa's sworn enemies. All the 16 panakas were already divided and also entire kingdoms allied themselves to the Spanish. Even then it all ended with the execution of Tupac Amaru in 1572.
@BunnyHatJ
@BunnyHatJ 11 лет назад
It surprised me that there isn't any episode about the Incas. But I think the main reason could be that the studies of Andean civs. aren't complete or satisfying enough in order to depict them in a precise way. Most of our imagery about that time had mostly been based on biased Spanish chronicles, and concepts about them are changing every day. e.g Spanish said that it was the emperor's son who inherited the empire, but now we know the panaka or royal families were actually matriarchies.

The Inca Empire was a great and mighty empire, comparable to Roman Empire. They managed to conquer the whole civilized world within their continent, and the legacy of their civilization still has some serious influence on modern world, such as the many crops they domesticated. They managed to terraform the inhospitable mountains into a fertile farmland. And military wise? A sophisticated army which had metallurgy and padded armour which would put European gambesons to shame, as well as metal helmets and chest plates, while being armed with halberds and multiple projectile weapons. If the Incan army faced the ancient Greeks, it would be an equal fight.

This theme and his declaration of war shall forever imprint into my memory. When I first started a first few games, so they said playing with "Random personalities" on mean you are at an advantage because the AI will act frantically and not in accordance with their bonuses. I say it basically turns everyone into a new Shaka, and you won't know who will turn out to be the warmonger. I played as Venice, Prince. I spawned on the same continent as this guy, he declared friendship. There's also another random civs which i also made friend of. Alright, good, I have friends., what can go wrong. I neglected my defense and only focus on the few early wonders (Great Library, Colossus, Hanging Garden). This guy marched right at my door step with a gang of spearmen and one or two archers. And his war declaration, fitting, has him knocking his pike on the floor. He completely overwhelm me and the other befriended AI, of course, did no help whatsoever. This guy and his music shall forever keep me on guard. Never neglect your defense, ever.

The Incas built Cuzco in a very similar way that the Aztecs did. They abandoned their original homeland, and after searching for a new land they conquered the Acamana valley and changed its name to Cuzco. Curiously, many Native American civilizations and cultures have myths where they had to travel from a far away land to establish their main city in a new place. Other Peruvian cultures such as the Lambayeque or the kingdom of Chimor had a similar myth. Maybe it was due to weather changes?
@BunnyHatJ
@BunnyHatJ 11 лет назад
The Incas (if we consider them as the pinnacle of Andean civilizations) would have given more to the world. The Mexicas and Mayans would have done so too, had their development not been destroyed by the Spanish. But they did pass on meaningful and valuable things to us, such as crops that saved the world from famine (e.g. Mesoamericans gave us the Corn, Andeans gave us the Potato). But I think it's too hard to compare civilizations though, since they developed by different paths.

If we take that kind of information to the mix, the Mayans declared themselves independent until the rule of Porfirio Diaz in Mexico, almost 400 years after the fall of Tenochtitlan, even today many Mayans don't like beeing part of Mexico, because it's linked more to the Aztecs than to the Mayans. But the three civilizacions had the bad luck of having to deal with the "colonia" of Spain.

Also, Rome tried to counquer "less advance" Germanic tribes, with their "superior tacticts", and look what hapend,and another thing, the location also would affected the outcome, the Aztecs we're masters of jungles, and the Incas masters of mountains, weapons do make a lot of weight, but it's not everything in wars.
@CaptainOfKaLA
@CaptainOfKaLA 11 лет назад
Let me correct your fail English. In a hypothetical scenario, had Francisco Pizarro stood and faced the Inca forces, the Empire of the Inca may still stand today. In reality, the Inca were what was Europe's pre-classical period. Other conquistadors would claim land in the name of the crown, squashing the Inca until their relatively primitive weapons did not make a difference. Less likely, the Spanish crown would have sent Tercios to simply conquer the Inca.

@somebody8576 i wouldnt call them exactly 'peaceful', the Incans set about conquering the neighbouring city-states around their capital of Cusco, they were no strangers to war. That been said, much like the mongols, they offered any city in their path to be peacefully annexed into the empire (many accepted). They were fine governors, with their own relatively advanced medical, education and communications system. I would of loved them to have another 200 years to see how they would develop.

Europe didn't make Asia sophisticated. They already were. And when I compare the Native Americans to a second Europe or Asia, I was specifically talking about how peaceful it would be, if you read more into my comment. If you compare the peace between United States America and Eurasia, Eurasia is obviously the more violent continent, because of all the nations and competition. Now, if the Americas had all those Nat. American empires, same level of violence.

Well, an empire doesn't need a modern military if it lives on top of one of the most treacherous mountain ridges on the globe. Pizarro didn't conquer the Inca through military might, he conquered the Inca through cleverness, trickery, and exploitation, taking advantage of the civil war occurring at the time. Aztecs got conquered by a gullible religion and the wrath of all their neighboring tribes. It wasn't all steel and gunpowder than ended the natives.

Flooding the plains was a good idea, clever too, and burning food supply was even better, but when horseman raids for the maize foodstuffs sucseeded, the seige was at a stalemate. Pizzaro wrote to Espanola and the Panama governer for troops, blah blah blah, the throne is dismantled, the empire falls into chaos, and we see classic imperialiam

i think the real question here is did they have a standing army. Whenever I meet him, if Genghis is in the game, he is already dead. When I meet him, I just build tons of horseman and rape his annoying ranged units. And by standing army, I mean a organized army with sophisticated command systems, doesn't have to be ours, could be led by the king. That can make all the difference.

I'm talking about in America, not the world. Even in Latin America it is more peaceful than in Asia or Africa. But had the Native Americans never been conquered, there would be SIGNIFICANTLY more competing nations in one area. You have the big empires like the Inca and Aztec empires, then you have the smaller yet equally sophisticated nations. The Americas would become a second Asia or Europe. Not like I support what the white-men did to the Native Americans. I know colonization was genocidal.
