I love watching your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘. It's really nice that Brad gave a shout-out to the bass line. The bassist is the late Carl Radle. Radle's subtle counter melody and chromatic walkdowns paired with Jim Gordon on drums sets such a cool vibe for Clapton's Blues licks to shine.

The dynamics of those pinches are purely soul-felt, light like tears yet cutting. imho while pinch harmonics have always been around this is likely the first solo on a recording which not only featured them widely it used them to actually paint the mood setting the tone of the song. Lol, Bell Bottoms may seem pretty retro today... Is definitely a time-period. This song has always been said to be kind of inspired by George Harrison's wife Pattie. Clapton had fell in love with her, around that time.

Clapton went to great lengths to get Patti and then ended up physically and mentally abusing her…his words, he stated this in an interview. She stated that she suspected that Clapton just wanted what George had and so began the drawn out pursuit of trying to woo her. She divorced him for his “unreasonable behavior” and “infidelity”. Good riddance. I enjoy his earlier music with Cream/Derek and I’m able to separate the music from the man, who it seems turned over a new leaf and straightened himself out with addiction issues and all that went with it.

Brad,he wrote this song for Patti Harrison ( George Harrison of the Beatles wife ) George was one of his best mates but he'd fallen in love with his wife,at the time they had a bad marriage and George was cheating on her a lot. Clapton wrote the whole album for her with lots of classics like Layla in it. He and Patti were getting closer and he was begging her to leave George, he also told her that if she didn't he'd take heroin full time ( which he did 😢) he'd been a casual user but he basically locked himself away for two years and became a MASSIVE heroin addict, which he then got clean BUT traded it for alcohol and became a massive alcoholic 😅 Eric Clapton did end up marrying Patti and still remained being friends with George Harrison up to George's death, they used to jokingly refer to each other as 'husbands in law '

Jim just recently passed away on March 13, 2023. He was an inmate in a prison/psychiatric facility in California. He was serving a 16 year to life sentence for the slaying of his mother, in 1983. you nailed it Clapton was beggin his A$$ off in this one...I think the whole Layla album is a grief cycle album, intentionally done or inadvertently. This is track #2 - stage #2 of the grief process is bargaining. Stage #1 is denial and track #1 is literally titled "I looked away." The title track Layla is the last track on the album...I think that song covers the entire grief cycle and is the only time the album reaches the "acceptance" stage in the outro...an absolute masterpiece of a heartbreak album. Check out the story behind this album, he had a torrid love affair with George Harrison's wife. George was one of Clapton's best friends (it was the 70's 🤷‍♂) and he wrote this album when she left New York to go back to Harrison in London. Years later she divorced Harrison and married Clapton.

That guitar sound is a genuine Fender Stratocaster most likely reported as through a Fender Champ little 15 Watt amplifier cranked to 10. (A little tiny tube amp pushed to its beautifully distorted limits. It doesn't take a big amp to get a big sound.) That is one of the most popular sounds that people associate with the original Fender Stratocaster guitar. The Stratocaster has 3 Single Coil pickups and a 3-way switch. Early players noticed that you can balance the 3-way switch between positions and get either the bridge or the neck pickup in a weird combination with the center pickup. (Weird because the balancing the switch like that caused the pickups' voltage to be summed in parallel instead of series like most pickup combinations.) This gives it that unique "Squawky", yet clear sound. Modern Stratocasters use a 5-way switch and sum pickups in series, as is industry standard, unless modified or Special Anniversary editions. A Fender Stratocaster is the body shape of the guitar with 2 cutaways where the neck meets the body. It was first sold in 1954. This song was recorded in 1970. Clapton owned a pre 1960 Stratocaster that he recorded this album with. The other guitar player in this band is Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers and Aretha Franklin fame. Duane Allman played a suped up 1957 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top with humbucker pickups. It recently sold at auction for $1,250,000. Duane Allman switches seamlessly between fingered and slide guitar giving it a unique sound also. A Les Paul is a body shape of one cutaway only and 2 pickups and a 3 way switch. This entire album "Layla, and Other Assorted Love Songs" was lyrically about Eric Clapton falling in love with Patti Boyd who was the wife of his friend George Harrison of the Beatles. Every single song on this album is about loving a married woman, begging her to stay, leaving because she is playing with his heart (and George Harrison's and Mick Jagger's... Patti Boyd got around...), or I'm so over you that I wrote this song about you, to listing all of the reasons why you are beautiful, etc... That theme even includes the cover-tunes on the album: "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" (Jimmy Cox); "Key To The Highway" (Big Bill Broonzy); "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" (Billy Miles); "Little Wing" (Jimi Hendrix). Seriously... The entire album is a Blues-Rock Soap Opera. It could easily be written into a musical movie.

There is a lot of history behind this song, including the wife of his best friend. She didn't leave Clapton, he's begging her to leave her husband, with whom she is not happy. Brad and Lex... If you want to see the only recorded footage of "Dereck and the Domino's", Check out The Domino's on the Johnny Cash Show. It has quite the back story. It was the only publicity the band could get before starting to tour as The Domino's. But it was a Country television show, so they had to send an audition tape to it. Carl Radle suggested they record country legend Bob Will's "It's Too Late", and send that as the audition.. The song was neve meant to be on the album but is. when it was accepted, the four original members appeared on the show. When Johnny Cash first introduced the band he said Eric Clapton and his band the Domino's. The Union Jack flag is clearly in display. The show was recorded live, and Bobby Whitlock interrupted Johnny by saying "wait a minute... Carl is from Oklahoma, Jim is from California, and I'mm from Memphis and that's my Granny Whitlock and other family members sitting in the front row of the Ryman Auditorium. Johnny Cash burst out laughing and they had to cut the tape. When Johnny re-introduced the band, He starts with introducing Bobby Whitlock, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, and lastly Eric Clapton. They had 30 seconds to re-do it because it was being recorded live. Bobby Whitlock clearly pushed Eric Clapton's vocals on the show, which was quite weak compared to the wonderful vocalist he would later become. Also, it is quite apparent on how big Johnny Cash was when "It's Too Late was completed, and he approaches Clapton. Also, they followed up with a song "Match Box" with Johnny, the band, and Carl Perkins. Carl and Eric displayed an awesome guitar solo's on it. I am an Eric Clapton historian, and your Pinellas County unique artist. Congratulations Mamma and Pappa.

Such a great album. Eric and Duane played off each other so well and brought out the best in each other's styles. If you want to hear a really great jam between them check out Key to the Highway. The song just cuts in already in progress because the engineer suddenly realized they weren't recording some of the best blues he had ever heard. Then check out I am Yours. It is a poem taken directly from the ancient Persian epic poem The Story of Layla and Manjun. The whole album is about Eric's unrequited love for George Harrison's wife.

@@boxbarry8061 Yes. If you listen closely you can pick out who is playing lead by the tone of their guitar and Duane's slide playing. Clapton is playing his Fender Stratocaster and has a thinner crisper sound compared to Duane on his gold top Les Paul which has a richer thicker sound to it along with the legendary Les Paul sustain.

I wore bell bottoms as a young man. It was the best of times ever. Hated to see the fad fade away. So did Eric Clapton. Story goes bell bottoms was becoming a thing of the past, so he wrote a song to them.😅

Brad: I KNEW these lyrics would get under your skin 😆. And you are correct that begging is not good in the dating/relationship world. But, sometimes BAD dating advice/behavior makes for good rock n roll lyrics. I think a song can be really well-written, yet still contain attitudes/behaviors that you wouldn’t advise someone to copy/emulate.

Great song that I love. It was written for George Harrison's wife who Eric was in love with. You can feel it in his singing how heartbroken he was. In fact the whole lp is a tribute to her. Since bell bottoms are referring to jeans, check out Neil Diamonds song "Forever In Blue Jeans" while you're at it.

NGL, Clapton's aching thirst for Harrison's wife was creepy AF, especially since Harrison was his friend. Yeah, he got some great songs out of it, this one and "Layla" included, but low-key, writing songs about wanting to throw it in your best friend's wife is just weird. Clapton was also an AWFUL racist, he famously went on an anti-immigrant rant in a concert in England in the early '80s, to the point where a whole "Rock Against Racism" movement was galvanized because of him. Great musician, but he's a POS.

This song and 10 others were created by the following bands written by either George Harrison (Beatles), Eric Clapton (Derik And The Dominos) or Ronnie Wood (Faces & The Rolling Stones) who were all in love the the UK model at the time named Pattie Boyd. She inspired so many songs! 1. THE BEATLES // "I NEED YOU" (1965) 2. THE BEATLES // "SOMETHING" (1969) 3. THE BEATLES // "FOR YOU BLUE" (1970) 4. DEREK AND THE DOMINOS // "LAYLA" (1970) 5. DERIK AND THE DOMINOS // "BELL BOTTOM BLUES" (1971) 6 AND 7. RONNIE WOOD // "MYSTIFIES ME" (1974) AND "BREATHE ON ME" (1975) 8. GEORGE HARRISON // "SO SAD" (1974) 9. ERIC CLAPTON // "WONDERFUL TONIGHT" (1977) 10. ERIC CLAPTON // "SHE'S WAITING" (1985) 11. ERIC CLAPTON // "OLD LOVE" (1989) 😯

This was another song for Pattie Boyd Harrison. She wanted Eric to bring back bell bottoms from his American tour. Pattie Boyd had SO many songs written for her . "Something" by her husband George Harrison . Layla , bellbottom blues , wonderful tonight, and old love. By her future husband Eric Clapton. Eric was hopelessly in love with her but 1 she was his best friend's wife ( George) 2 He was convinced that even if she ever left George he would be the last person she would fall for. But his Lancelot ways finally won her over. Layla and other love songs was written at a time when he was convinced he would always be in love with a woman he could NEVER have. That's why the album has so many songs about unrequited love. I don't think Eric was a virgin but he'd never been in love before so he fell hard, in that teenage first love kinda way. It made for some amazing songs!

Brad, you need to understand, lyrics like these come from dudes with avoidant personalities. Basically, they never let the woman in, never give her a sense of security or commitment, until she finally gives up and threatens to leave. Only then do they say all this mushy wussy stuff, and often it tricks the woman into giving them yet another chance. Then the dudes go right back to their old ways. Please don't look at all these lyrics written by classic men in the classic era through the eyes of modern "red-pilled", "how to game women" goggles. You're missing the mark by not understanding the historical cultural context and framing everything in a modern context.

They came and went, but D and the D were instrumental in Clapton’s vocal development. Whitlock’s intense delivery forced Eric to compete and belt out vocals like never before. He was insecure about his voice and Bobby pushed him to a level he probably didn’t know he had.
