After Lombard died, Gable enlisted in the air force. An officer, he went against regulations and went on bombing missions, serving as a gunner. During the war, he visited a hospital for wounded soldiers. A medical officer, a major I believe, showed him around. They came to one shot up kid and the doctor went on about how the kid only had two hours to live. When Gable objected to talk like this in front of the poor soul, the doctor reassured him the boy was too shot up with morphine to understand anything. When Gable saw a tear come down the soldier's face, Gable took the officer out to the hall, threw him up against the wall and said if he ever did anything like that again, Gable would kill him. Since reading that story, my respect for Gable knows no limits.
I can't believe he received one Oscar, he really deserved to get one for gone with the wind! Nobody could have played that part like him. Great actor, handsome! It's so sad he lost his wife Carol Lombard , they were perfect together!
Clark Gable will always be "The King of Hollywood". No other actor, or for that matter, no other man had his charisma, and alpha male personality. It is telling that he was referred to as "Mr. Gable" by the people that interviewed him and by his fans when they would meet him. There will never be another like him.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I love the narrator’s voice. It’s not professional at all, but it’s so calming and soothing. And I love learning about all my favorite old movie stars. I only meant to watch a couple of these, but I’ve been watching them all day long. I can’t get enough of them. 🤔
His voice IS professional. I watched a video by a woman who was evidently reading from her notes or some pre-written biography and although her voice was not unattractive it was very jarring to listen to because she paused in all the wrong places.
When choosing an charismatic actor for the coveted role, they wanted someone who's rugged and masculine yet suave and debonair, the list was short though nonetheless impressive, Randolph Scott who was rugged and manly and Erroll Flynn who was suave and debonair, but Clark Gable balanced both of these qualities.
I believe Gary Cooper could have played Rhett Butler with ease. Actually, David Selznick offered him the RB role first. And Cooper turned down the role because he thought GWTW was going to be a flop. lol
Gone With the Wind was seen by some 20% of the Americans in the US that time. I believe, to this day, it is still the most attended movie by population percentage ever .
Selznick was fined $5,000 ...a lot of money at that time, for the use of that word. They filmed the end 4 different ways but Selznick decided to cop the fine and use the word 'damn'.
Carole was'nt the only love of his life. Had she not die in a plan crash I'm sure down the line he would have met and marry someone else. How many times was he married?

He was married many times, but the earlier marriages to older women were obviously for strategic reasons. and after carole died, he was too lonely just to live alone - people do marry to escape loneliness of being alone too, you know. Not all marriages are due to being passionately in love with the other person.

He died 61 years ago today. What an actor he was! He could do it all. Comedies(look at all those film in the 30s) Drama(the films of the 40s and 50s). He won 1 Oscar, but should have won 3. He should have got it for Gone With The Wind and for the Misfits, the last film he did. You were so good Mr. Gable! It is a pleasure to watch you on the screen. You mean to say that Kay Williams Gable allowed him to be buried next to Carole Lombard, who tragically died in January 1942. Kay herself was entombed close to Clark Gable and Carole Lombard Gable.

Clark Gable was my Mother's favorite actor. I have watched Gone with the Wind probably too many times to count. He definitely should have won an award for his role of Rhett Butler. I actually named my daughter after Vivian Leigh, as I loved the character of Scarlett. She was my heroine of all time. I watch any movie with Clark Gable in it.
I'm sorry, but you need to set your sights higher than Scarlett O'Hara. She was a selfish bitch. The real Southern Belle and true lady was Melanie (Olivia De'Haviland's character). We adopted a rescue Rottie who's name was Scarlett --- we immediately changed it! And yes, I am a Southern woman.
Just so incredibly sad how it all played out but probably more so because I long for those days. I was born in 56 but feel like I was born at least 100 years late. Found this strictly by accident, but as a fan of the King, and a "dabbler" in theater and film , I couldn't resist seeing this. One of the best done bio's I have ever seen, starting with the soft, mellifluous, respectful, down to earth voice, and delivery of the narrator. So good I couldn't resist sharing it and commenting on it.

His in depth knowledge is astounding because he tells the WHOLE life story of not just the wonderful actor but his parents, family, relationships and even illnesses and accidents that would be exaggerated or trivialised if you read it elsewhere. Oh I'm not saying he wasn't a user, I'm just saying how many women adored him. He was quite rugged, along with Robert Taylor. If Taylor was around today, women would not leave him alone to catch his breath, that guy was more rugged than Mel Gibson in his prime. Alot of those 1930s stars had on screen partners who were together for at least a few different films, and made their love for each other believable enough to where it was hard to believe something was not going on between them off screen. Best examples were Gable and Jean Harlow, Taylor and Eleanor Powell, William Powell and Myrna Loy, Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, Rooney and Judy Garland, and Janette McDonald and Nelson Eddie. The latter two really did romance off screen. The others, no one was as sure about, and Powell and Keeler most likely had nothing going on off screen since Keeler was married to Al Jolson (who was the jealous type) and Dick Powell married Joan Blondell. There's still no way to know 100℅ if they didn't privately elope a few times, even behind their spouses' backs.
I just watched The Misfits today. The entire cast seem to actually be the characters they were portraying. It’s a very sentimental and striking movie and touched my heart deeply. I’ll be watching it again. Deepest respect for Clark. My great grandson, born last week is named Clark. Now I understand why. It’s a deeply honored name in American culture.
My great aunt, got her lifelong nickname from Clark Gable. She worked as a nurse aid, at a California hospital, wearing a pink hospital uniform. She was walking down a hall, when someone opened a door into her. She got knocked into Clarke’s arms. He caught her and said, “Hello, are you ok pinky?” From then on, she was always known as “Pinky”. I met her when I was about 4 years old. I never knew her as anything other than “Aunt Pinky”, until her death, when I learned her real first name. Kathryn.

I saw some parts from old clips when ship named after Carole Lombard was celebrated and it was threw on sea's. He was there. He was standing. Pretending to be strong man. But I replayed this part over and over. His broken smile was near to explosion. He loved her so much. He kept piece of her always with himself, a piece of brooch from the place of tragic death that she received from him for Christmas. Friend of his told that he was always asking himself "why ma? why?' and he decided to go to the military and become a pilot because he wanted to die the same way. In sky, like she did. So devastated story of those two amazing people.

He was a favorite of the studio publicity photographers. While actors and actresses fretted and insisted on being photographed a certain way, Gable would just say, 'Shoot away.' He didn't care how the pics turned out.

Ernest Borgnine-a very nice man. James Garner. Kirk Douglas. Steve McQueen & Ali McGraw. Sylvester Stallone. Erik Estrada. Clete Roberts a highly respected news reporter from the 50's-70's. Dana Elcar-of "McGuyver" fame who was another very nice man and Bill Lucking- a major character actor. Dana and Bill actually lived in Santa Paula. As you well know, these stars are just people like the rest of us.They have the same ups and downs, pains and joys as we all do. Your efforts in presenting their life stories is appreciated. So strange that this is so historical, I used to play with Loretta Youngs boys, Peter, and Christopher. They were well behaved nice boys. Now that I am 75 yrs old, it is so sad to learn that everyone has died. I was a friend to her niece Betty Jane, we had fun at her Birthday parties where Loretta always came by with a gift for BJ . LOVED THOSE YEARS.

My father was the doctor who delivered Kay Gable's baby at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital on Vermont Ave., in Hollywood, CA. I remember my dad telling me that it was he, my dad, who broke the news to Kay when Clark Gable died. My dad's name was Dr. Richard N. Clark, M.D.

Clark Gable was one of the greatest, most iconic 1930s male stars, he was amazing. The narration of this video was fabulous, he really helped everything said really tug at the heart strings.
Hollywood doesn't want us to focus on the facts about one of these most glamorous actresses- she had been beaten by her husband and lost her kidneys. Mr Gable was so kind to get her to the hospital as he had charmed her mother into acquiescing into the trip to the hospital. Apparently he was the only one trusted enough to keep the secret from the public. Pretty much the gentleman.

No ur all wrong Jean Harlow had an affair with William Powell aka The Think Man and she became pregnant with his child but had to have an abortion or was forced to by the head of the Studio because Powell was married and having an affair with the 26 yr old Harlow this would have ruined his career and unfortunately after she had the abortion she developed an infection that killed her. Clark Gable knew this and that's why he was so worried about her but unfortunately couldn't save her in time
Delightful documentary by Jerry Skinner who brings a gentle warmth and great respect with his excellent narration. I hope to find other documentaries by Mr. Skinner who puts more story in a slow easy 28 minutes than any one else does in 90. Thank you sir, beautiful production.
No he wasnt . He did those screw ball comedies but after she died he joined the service for revenge and after that he did more serious films the rest of his career.
I do not agree. When he was young he was ugly, his teeth were horrible and he needed much work to look good. His life before he was famous left much to be desired.
Your videos are very well done and informative. I always thought that Gable died of lung cancer. Gable was only 59 and today would have been saved by coronary artery bypass surgery. Actors like him seemed larger than life.

At first, I too, was surprised by the narrator's soft, slightly southern, voice, but the voice was so gentle, and the facts so interestingly shared, I was entranced. Love this, Rhett Butler was always my favorite character, next to Viven Leigh. I still sit and read Gone With The Wind, with a nice cup of tea, on a day when i want to escape the realities of life and step back into a time of such sadness and tragedy, only as Margret Mitchell can tell.
