Awesome! When you started talking about the Jagdtiger I remembered I had a Zvezda kit kicking around, so I built it up while listening. I'm pretty sold on this starter.

This starter set is a great set … I purchased 2 of them however I built the Panthers as Jagpanthers , and the ISU 122s as 152s … I used it as a way to bulk out my Bagration and Bulge armies… but now that Berlin German is out … I’m going to have to pick up both the books, unit , and command cards

The IS-2 is an assault beast - I've got 10 and 3 IS-85's. This is a great set, I used mine to get some cheap extra tanks to pad out my collection. I now have 7 JagdTigers :)

I was in my local hobby store a couple of days ago and almost bought it just because the value is so good. I didn't buy it because I already have all of these models in excess. It would have just sat on my shelf. With this said....Battlefront/FOW have the best value box sets.

Agree. These boxes are a very good starting point. Not only for Flames of war but for other wargames in 15mm

Truth. On the plus side, many of these kits are muilti-purpose. You can build jadgpanthers if you have enough panthers; you can build ISU 152 or 122... you can build t34 as either 76 or 85. I love the versatility of this particular set.

It is a cracker, esp. as an existing player because most of these kits are useable in other periods if you have too many.

Although the T-34 has fiddly track guards, there have been subtle changes over the years. At some time around Bagration Soviet, they modified the hull sprue to make the Hull MG and turrets easier to clip off. Compare the old frame picture with the new frame...

As far as i remember the name was chosen to avoid confusion: Panzer IV - refers to the normal Panzer IV with the 7,5-cm-KwK 40 L/48 Jagdpanzer IV - refers to the tank destroyer with the 7,5 cm Pak 39 L/48 (also called Panzerjäger IV 7,5 cm Pak 39 L/48) Panzer IV/70(V) - refers to the tank destroyer with the long 7,5cm gun, to prevent confusion with the short barreled version. The original name was "Panzer IV lang (V)", with lang referring to the longer gun and V referring to the manufactorer Vomag. The Jagdpanzer IV and the Panzer IV/70(V) were based on the Panzer IV, but built as a tank destroyer from the ground up. Panzer IV/70(A) - this is a conversion of the original Panzer IV built by Alkett, it has the unmodified hull with a casemate and the 7,5cm L70 gun. The basic Panzer IV was no longer in production, when the long barreled tank destroyers were in production (or the production was supposed to end).

Yeah, I knew that bit, but why panzer, it is clearly not a panzer IV, it is a TD using a PZIV Hull... it doesn't match the naming conventions of the rest of the army...

Also the Panzer IV 70 can be assembled as the Jagpanzer4 the difference is the different 7.5cm guns

It sounds like a napoleonic style formation , miniature armies that are fast and manoeuvre well. And you can group them all up into a grand Armée

I was excited to pick this up until finding out they were using some older more fiddly models. I'm of a certain age where I need less fiddle not more.

If it helps, around Bagration Soviet, they made the T-34 turret and Hull MG bits easier to clip off. Starting with the T-34 battalion box the sprues are new and improved. No change to the track guards though...

iirc the STUG IV is on a panzer IV chassis yes but STUG is short for "sturmgeschutz" which translates to assault gun. It was not a tank destroyer. So its "assault gun IV" jagdpanzer means tank destroyer. So its "tank destroyer IV/70" the 70 referring to the pak 42 L/70 gun it was armed with. In short while both are on a panzer IV chassis they are different classifications.

To me these stats show why FoW V4 is in many ways MORE historical than V3. In V3 you had motivation and skill only. In V4 you have motivation and skill AND to hit and a special cross check - also aditional modifers. So there is a much better "fine tune" of the different unit. Theses very late war german units show that clearly.

I feel that the edition is maturing a lot with time I think we will see a lot more niche formations with this kind of variety.

Johnny B I’ve played seven games with this boxset as the Germans and creamed the Russians each time so the German force isn’t as weak as it first looks

Still have formidable power in the tanks included, and armoured enough to not have to worry about that lower motivation for the re mounts/last stand I guess.

@@jbatchelor85 yeah and how to use them, it does come down to some lucky dice rolls, but standing off with the bigger guns and taking advantage of their range and AT rating gives the Germans an advantage, especially when they’re well placed and not having to move so your putting double shots down range

I think that it's a wonderful box with great kits... there's nothing in there that a German or Soviet player wouldn't want. If you take the huge amount of great models, the rulebook, the cards, etc. it's an amazing value. All that being said, I think the forces are incredibly lopsided in favor of the Germans. If two newbies sat down, built these forces and played a basic game I think the Soviet player would get utterly disintegrated and possibly not slay a single enemy model. So that's the one place where I would mark off some points from the grade.

Would this be a good set to get in to the hobby or would you suggest another of their stater sets as im told with this being late war the units are very powerful so may be best to start with another set like hit the brach? What would you suggest?

All these 2 player starter sets are amazing value - I would pick the one that has the faction in you want. If you want Soviets and Germans, get this one; if you want US get hit the beach.

Anyone know if there are single player rules for this? I don’t have people to play with so as much as I enjoy doing the models I would like to play solo if possible.

Sadly I don't know. You can always try attack / defence scenarios where one side is largely static.
