As a young lad its honestly great that people like you were around in the days of iconic diesels with your cameras so I can see the past, very much enjoyed :)
I'm very pleased you are interested in what the railways were like, its true that the generation before us always say the railway were better in my days , but I must say that statement is true. Because when I got into the hobby in 1974 the railways were a lot more exciting than now, but its great that we have so much information and our iphone to get the up to date info all the time. Always keep checking my videos for the old footage you was referring to as all my olf footage has never been uploaded before Jake. Thanks for taking a look regards Mike.
@@antman09ful1 A very good workhorse indeed, and as you say, still are! Best locos I ever drove. I won't say what the max speed I had out of one though. Just that it was 831 Bolton Wanderer! 😉
@@antman09ful1 From slow wagonload, to Freightliners, MGRs, stopping passenger, top link expresses, flat out top speeds, f1 station starts, including setting of car alarms, ro lifting the floorboards on a station footbridge with the sheer power from the exhaust! I got into trouble for that, for stopping short of the board😄. Does show what umph that Sulzer power unit has though! Enjoyed nearly every second on 47s,apart from the usual 'incontinence' issue of coolant loss. Great video again.
@@railfreightdrivergallagherGBRfmy uncle was a driver on the SWR. Whilst the 33s and 50s took the plaudits, he reckoned the 47s were the best to drive overall. And yes....he was happy to admit it was quite easy to top 100 between Woking and Basingstoke!
Brilliant Video! Absolutely great to see the HST's and the 47s doing to the routes to and from Poole would love it if cross country decide to bring that sort of service back one day 🙂
Cracking video. Thanks for sharing. Happy days and great memory’s. The Silverlink 321 in the final clip is just a bigger piece of history now along side the 47s
Well Mark that is great that you have enjoyed my old footage I did all them years back when we had great locos and units on our railway. Now and again I do upload old footage from my early days of doing this hobby. ATB Mike.
Fantastic Sulzer selection there Mike, plus a few other goodies too - EPS 37604 a great capture in particular! Like Steve, the late nineties to late noughties was the period I mostly missed out on filming(well, girls tend to be more interesting than trains - although sometimes just as reliable!), so I look forward to seeing more of your nostalgic uploads.
Even though we probably have never (and will never) like their Pendos and Voyagers compared to loco hauled sets, Virgin Trains was a very good TOC. Very fair prices, good punctuality. For example, not long before the franchise ended I could get from New St to London on a weekend for a fiver with my railcard. In 2018 I went from New St to Edinburgh first class return on a Wednesday for £90. Now, Avanti and CrossCountry have ridiculously high fares, never any discounts or offers.
You are right Chriso Virgin were a very good company for the people who travel on there trains and there staff. I remember when Virgin took over the franchise I went to Plymouth for 50p, and they did Saturday type rover tickets for us train enthusiasts. Thank you for finding this only video of mine and your comment. Regards Mike.
yeh mate..why ever did they get rid of them...47's and carriages were far better than all these frigging " plastic missiles " of nowadays...the 47's & carriage trains..had far more character, and also in my opinion gave a much better ride..also with better seating facilities and more leg room..the pendolino's & units of today..are very uncomfortable & so cramped..more or less to the point where the person sitting in front of you..is technically more or less sitting on your frigging lap..and you never even get a " full window " anymore.. :(
Steve I agree with you 150% with your comment they were such great times when we had proper trains, I mean how can you run a train from Penzance to say Edinburgh or Dundee with three second class coaches.
I'm going to upset you now pmallenuk I got off at that station behind 50031 one sunny evening in 1989 on the start of the best bash I ever went on. Me and my mate Tim (both of us from chesterfield) we're on the hunt for 50's 33's and 73's it was mega apart from getting things very very wrong and getting stuck for the night at Yeovil jct but the nice station staff let us sleep in the waiting room albeit without lights. After a bit of Crompton action the next morning got a top n tail pair of 73's sadly on 3rd rail. One of these days I going to get round to putting all my many photos on here.
The Northampton loop must be have been shut that day, I heard an announcement saying Sliverlink County service to London Euston, calling at Coventry, Rugby, Wolverton then stations to Euston.
Hi, I thought it was all 86's and 87's around those times. Why were they running 47's and even a 37!? 37's are my favs. Thanks enjoyed your video very much.
I too like the class 37, and the 37 in this video was in place of a failed 47. The 47s were the normal loco on XC services then, not like today rubbish we have today.
The 47s ran on non-electrified lines and diversions, same as the Voyagers do now. I once had a class 47 drag from Glasgow Central to Carlisle via Kilmarnock!
How is it that the Class 47's were less claggy than Paxman Valenta-powered HST's? If only 47's were rebuilt as 57's - that would get us rail enthusiasts out 😍!
The videos are on my channel cover from St Andrew Junction to Bordesley Junction. If you are referring from Bordesley Junc to Kings Norton you will have to wait to later in the year.
@@antman09ful1 I was working for Virgin at Oxley depot in 2002 and remember the 47's going through a reliability rough patch so almost anything diesel was used to haul the XC sets!
@@antman09ful1 satire or truth? Is a simple sign not good enough my good man. I've seen a 37 In police livery but that was for a advert years ago as to which I'm sure one is familiar. Many thanks squire
