Great video. I bought a 5/8 Ralf Aust from you and I'm learning to shave with a straight. This video showed me it's alright to have stubble after the first pass - my mistake is trying to acheive close shave with a straight in one pass.

Thank you Razor Emporium!

I have been using this for about 7 months and love it. Great shave at a great price and excellent for learning. I am looking forward to getting a second Ralf Aust razor and possibly splurging a bit more on it. I use it with a nice caffinated shave cream (though I forget the brand) and have never gotten a better shave. It is forgiving enough to use that even while learning I have been able to shave fairly quickly and no cuts or incidents any worse than a standard cartridge razor.

I have a scar on my cheek. Trying to improvise a razor blade into a straight razor when my Dorco travel razor got killed by a Humvee tire one time. So now in the field I use a different travel razor and is currently my daily driver only due to the fact I got deployed. I chuckled at the scar from shaving.

Thank you for taking care of my razor issue and you truly earned me as a customer. Will you send me a shirt if you will. I would wear it here in Florida.

As usual a great video! I have been using a Dovo 5/8" Round point for about 6 months. Not every day but I try, at least, once a week. The only difference is that I have a full beard and shave my head. I have been experimenting with different soaps which leads me to my question. What were you rubbing on your face after the water but before the soap? The hair, especially at the back of my head, are hard to cut and need several passes. Maybe with the right preparation they will cut more easily.

As for the blade angle, there is an old video here from Geofatboy in which he does a three pass straight razor shave applying an almost perpendicular blade angle. Seemed to work extremely well, so not sure about the old picture you refer to is that off.

@butchwaxx2652 2 года назад
BW, I have seen Geo on several occasions use that same “perpendicular” angle to perfection. He has a face made for shaving for sure. I think it must be that Euro heavy beard that supports his shave speed and angle??

Good video. True statement about exfoliating. I've tried/have a few straights. My favorite is the Boker Arbolito. True that you need to take your time and enjoy but there is a bit of a learning curve. As you master it, you get faster, but there's where the danger lies if you turn it into a rush. Lol. But it does take time to strop and hone the blade properly so it is a more time consuming effort overall but if you look at it as an enjoyment, time for yourself, plus I think it's a good thing for every man to learn IMO. At least treat yourself to a straight razor, hot towel shave from your local barber to feel the experience. Some say it gives the closest shave but not sure about that; I think with the great engineered aggressive safety DE razors out today, you can get just as close a shave.
@trunkerdixon
@trunkerdixon 3 года назад
If you take a machine sharp blade like that in a DE, and put it in a razor with no guard, i.e. a shavette - then you have your closest possible shave and also i will add, your most unforgiving! Straight razors are all different, depending on who honed them and how, on what - but they will let the odd lapse in pressure or angle slide before they cut you. Shavettes will not. T

Hey, Matt, I like the way you CASUALLY describe the moment you got a GNARLY scar using a SR… all the while demonstrating shaving with a SR! 😳😬 It’s akin to a Harley salesman, on a demo, saying, “So, I broke my hip in three places after I fell off my “hog,” , but hey, hip fractures are COOL, right?” 😆🤣 Aside from that, SOLID video, my SECOND time seeing it, all the way through. 🤓 BTW, what’s a brother gotta do to get a T-shirt around here? 😩 (I fit an “XXL,” just in case! 😉) P.S. - Just noticed you no longer sell the 5/8” version of a “Ralf Aust,” which is a shame, since it’s the one you recommend for beginners. 😕

I’m starting to think that a great piece of equipment for a beginner straight shaver... is a goatee. I used a straight for a little while but gave it up when I couldn’t avoid irritating my skin, but I’m realizing all the irritation was around the divots in my chin. Watching you made me think.... hmmmm.
@ravencrovax
@ravencrovax 3 года назад
A goatee does help. I do a full shave with a straight and honestly, about half my time shaving goes towards the area that would be covered by a goatee. Also, that is where I get the most irritation; even when I used cartridges, so I may regrow mine from when I was in college.

He mentions in another comment a response about that; basically doing that isn't inherently terrible-it's just easy if you're careless to mess up the blade. For him, he's got the tools and the training to fix any issues, but for your average person cracking the blade against the tap will require sending it off to get repaired; so it's just not worth the few seconds it saves.
