Still getting used to a shavette. I've realized a few things the hard and bloody way: Take your time (say that twice). Keep a shallow angle, don't go bending it outwards. Don't ever use it if you don't feel good that day (sick, tired, stressed, whatever). Don't be afraid to practice it without a blade inside. And perhaps most importantly: don't be a hero, especially about going against the grain. You do NOT need to go against the grain to get a super close shave. You'll see people doing that and making it look easy, that's because they've already shaved with it hundreds, maybe even thousands of times. That's not you, and that's fine. Oh and Matt, you inspired me to start with each hand on each side of the face - thank you for that, it really helps a lot!

Shavettes are too sharp I find. And handle differently than a proper straight. And once you've used a straight and only a straight no cheating your grandad didn't. You'll find that you can shave almost as fast as using a Gillette 5 blade or similar. It becomes quite easy to do after a year has passed. I only cut myself here and there during the first few months now it's a rarity that I knick myself at all.

Your exactly right Shavette's are the Corvettes of straight razors you can slice your face very easily, however once it all comes together there is no better shave, two passes done. I got hooked on straight razors 11 years ago, and I'm cheap box of 100 derby's $7 bucks last a year.

@@machfiver753 I got hooked on Shavette's when I started, bought a traditional and liked the sound and the feel but find myself only using it a couple times a year Shavette's blades are smaller and way sharper two passes and done. It's truly awesome to be able to use straights.

I always struggled with getting a smooth comfortable shave with a straight razor until I came across Lynn Abrams video where he explained how to gauge the angle with the spine. I have shaved with a DE for a long time but a straight razor is a bit different. The way he explained it was to look at the thickness of the spine, and use THAT thickness and shave with the spine away from the skin that amount of space. It worked like a charm! Almost nick-free and WONDERFULLY smooth straight razor shaves since then.

ScottM honestly i cook for a living so im always slinging a blade around and being able to “tourne” fruits vegetables i guess would be one of the closest things to shaving really. but i got comfortable my very first time did my whole face i had one knick but you know what i knew how i made the mistake. but really theres no much to it shave with the grain of you hair and its smooth.

I bought my first strait razor, a brand new gold dollar for $6. I honed it and stropped it and my very first shave was perfect! Not one nick and the shave felt like the closest shave I’d ever had! My skin felt like a babies ass, so to speak! (No, I don’t go around feeling babies asses, I just know they are soft fresh skin) lol! But yup, I have purchased much more expensive razors and they don’t get much better than a well honed Gold Dollar strait razor. I did grind down the same part he talks about in the video. It was very obvious that it needed to be done. Luckily I’m a knife maker, so I know how to hone a blade. And my Norton Wetstones work amazing!!! Best Wetstones on the market!

You said it perfect Matt 😁👌🏻 Gold dollar or something similar is supposed to just get your feet wet and I did just exactly that. I also got a cheap beginner strop to practice on and I quickly wanted a better razor. So Anthony Esposito recommend I get a Theirs-Issard and boy did I love it as soon as I saw it! I also purchased a more higher quality strop. I just purchased a Herman Oak English Leather Bridle Leather 3”. I’m not even going to touch it for awhile till I know my technique has improved. Because within two minutes of stroping my Gold Dollar I already nicked my strop lol. (Very slightly and not deep at all, it’s still flat. But yeah what I’m doing is a very good idea lol and I’m getting better everyday!!! Another great thing you touched on is first learning with a DE or Shavette. I’ve been traditional saving for over three years and definitely learned that. I also have been using a Shavette and Kamasori style Shavette for years so I think that’s why I did so well my first straight razor shave. I’m still no Zen Master yet but I’ll definitely will be!!! 💪🏻😁 💈😁👍🏻💈 ~Mike Rose 🌹

Glad to let you know that in Russia where I am from the straight razor shaving is getting be fashionable (so far so good😁). There were a number of razors plants in the middle of 20th century in the USSR. Today, the price of these rasors sometimes bigger then DOVO's because of it wonderful carbon steel. But it's rather hard to find one in a good condition. You have to try those of "VACHA" or "STIZ" blades of 1935-1965 years of production. Best regards from Russia 😊.

I started out with a De and learned how to stretch my skin, then bought a Shavette, because the blade was smaller it was a lot easier to get the hang of the feel. The traditional straight I got a couple years later was quite different larger blade and no where near as sharp took me a couple shaves to be comfortable with and I had been straight shaving for two years.

After shaving with safety razors for some 5-6 years i bought a dovo straight razor early this summer. The first two weeks was hard, and people pestered me about prolonged morning routines initially. But now, after only using straight razor daily for some three months i can say i can pull off a 3 pass, lathered from soap straight razor shave in 15-20 minutes. It's really about muscle memory regarding the angle, and getting to know which directions your facial hair grows so you shave parts in an effective and safe manner. I don't think i'll ever go back to using something else. Only thing that would do that would be a illness making me unable to shave in this manner.

I shaved with an old straight razor when I was fourteen (I had to start shaving at twelve), but I never got it really sharp on the old leather belt that I stropped on, so I moved to double-edge safety razor (with the old blue twist-to-open Gilette handle that I still use) and tried a bunch of Wilkinson and Gilette 2-3 blade disposable razors. Nothing really felt comfortable with my tough beard and sensitive skin. A good friend gave me a good strop (leather and weave) and a DOVO straight razor for my birthday, and I studied your youtube videos on how to strop and use razors (as well as a bunch of other videos). A few things I would advise people to do -- use the pre-shave and a hot towel first to soften the hair before you apply the shaving cream (not with the brush, but massage it into your skin with your fingers), always shave with the growth and not against the growth, take your time, strop the razor before and after each shave session, and don't rinse the razor but wipe off the soap on a separate towel. And, indeed, don't put it away right after use, but leave your opened straight razor to dry out. Cool videos, thank you very much. And if you want to send me a T-shirt, I'd need an XXXL. :)

Stropping does not sharpen the blade! Honing is for sharpening, stropping basically resets the microscopic serrations of metal at the razors edge and aligns it correctly.

You are so correct Matt, it takes some time and figuring out what works and what doesn’t when learning to Shave straight razor. But in my opinion it’s been worth it, I’m really enjoying straight razor shaving and am glad I put the effort in. Yes, I’ve nicked and cut myself in the learning process but I’ve learned what not to do. I had some nicks in learning the correct technique for DE razors as well, that was also worth it!

I went directly to straight razor from cartridge. I've recently bought a shavette and have one of the typical Guild Dollar 66 razors being shipped sometime this month. Unfortunately, the vintage razor I bought was bent in the middle slightly enough to really mess up the geometry and make sharpening it fairly difficult but I managed to get it sharper than the seller did and I got such a better shave after sharpening it myself.

Interesting process. I used to hone for other people and refurbish vintage razors to include scale replacement. One thing I always did before I sent the razor back to the owner was to do a test shave. Most people would shave their arm or calf but I wanted to know how the edge felt on the face, big difference so I shaved with it. Usually I had 2 or more razors and I would shave with one on the left side of my face then switch razors and shave the opposite side of my face. At the end, I would rub my wet fingers on my cheeks to see how well the razor actually shaved. You out a lot of great, informative videos and I watch you when I can..

Very good stuff! Could tell you hadn’t used one in a while but like you said, it’ll come back with repetition. I would definitely agree that a shavette is a great starting point if you’re interested in getting a straight razor. There’s no need to drop money on a high quality straight razor if you don’t know the basics which do take a while to learn. Personally, I have not used a cartridge razor in YEARS (nor have I had razor burn since ditching them), but to each their own. I don’t see why anyone needs five heated and vibrating blades with a goop strip just to shave.

I'll admit that I have four or five shave ready straights (none of them less than 40 years old), and I've only picked up a shavette. I stick with the DE, because, well, I just need a good shave. I applaud you for being willing to film a multi-day beard being cut with a tool that you haven't been using frequently. Many would have spent three or four days getting back into the groove of it before filming, and making sure they had as little hair as possible to remove. When I was last active (four years ago? Five?) Gold Dollar basically meant 'trash'. I have a few that take enormous amounts of work to hone, or did back five or six years ago. I gifted a few that I bought over 14 years ago, when they were sold at a 99 cent store, to people that wanted to practice honing on something that wasn't going to cost them an arm and a leg. Still have a few somewhere.

Thanks for a great demo of straight razor shaving! Most guys on RU-vid do not show from start to finish. In their videos, there are several breaks and some never demonstrate the shave on the left side of the face. I am new to the straight razor experience. I used my new purchased shavette and donated a little less than a pint of blood to the learning process. I understand that "practice makes perfect," and I do intend to make a second attempt when my wounds heal. Is your shop in Phoenix still open? I came by on a Saturday (2/15/20) and front & back were locked up tighter than a drum.

@tbrew8222
@tbrew8222 Год назад
Thats exactly what I thought of once he mentioned the smoothness. My thoughts are that although both ground to same profile on same stones and strops, the harder steel will be smoother because the softer one is getting micro nicks and dulling faster. the phase before hair tugging dull, is.... not as smooth.
@josvei4052
@josvei4052 2 года назад
The real difference in razor widths (the distance between the spine and the edge) is the angle of sharpening, as the razor is put flat over the stone or strop to be sharpened, the angle of the edge in contact with the stone/strop will be lower for a wider blade, that's basic trigonometry. The lower the angle the better the razor will cut.

i jumped right in for straight razors about 2 years ago when i was 17. i didnt have previous experience with safety razors but i have always had a knack for knives. i have always loved knives and the art of making them and sharpening them. i looked at videos for about 6 months before i got a replaceable blade straight razor and i did cut myself a few times every now and again but it didnt really bother me. once though i was doing the area beneath the nose and i pulled the plade away like 3 millimeters to look at what i had to shave again, and i shook a bit to one side with the razor and cut myself and got a fith of an inch gash beneath the nose. it stung quite a bit but i learn something new everytime i cut myself. one year later i got a real dovo blue steel cut throat razor and still practicing. ( by the way. if i heard you correctly in one video you recommend stropping after a shave? i read on a forum and on the site where the razor was bought that stropping after a shave is bad because the metal is porrus after a shave and can damage the edge, is this true? on the forum they recommended 24 hours waiting until stropping again to let the metal reset its properties)
@trunkerdixon
@trunkerdixon 5 лет назад
Metal somehow resets itself after contact with a steamy bathroom environment that made it porous? Only the mimetic polyalloy of the T-1000 can manage that. If i were you, i'd make sure you dry your blades well after use, strop them a few times to dry the edge and store them away from the bathroom. T

Hey Matt. Very good video. To make a true unbiased comparison, you’d need to disguise the razors. A blind test of sorts. Interesting that your shop pretties and the Dovo razors. For that added expense, it might be better to just buy the Dovo. The GD obviously has some quality control and consistency issues. I’m not saying that they’re inferior razors, but they’re clearly a no frills, budget razor, that’s aimed at frugal buyers. People not accustomed to straight razors should be aware of the many pros and cons of buying a GD as a first razor. I feel that you cannot sample straight razors without spending a chunk of money. I started with a Whipped Dog and quickly had to shell out more money.

Hey Matt, good video and very timely - I’m kicking around the idea of trying a shavette to familiarize myself with the mechanics of straight razors before making a big investment. Do you think there is enough similarity there to be beneficial or will I just be spinning my wheels? BTW, I hope that young man will follow your advice and keep plugging away. He should give it a fair shot before making up his mind.

You make it look easier than shaving with a safety razor. I shaved with a cartridge razor before I grew a beard. Now I'm using a safety razor. I'm still not particularly happy with shaving. I've tried a mild and a medium aggressiveness razor. Hoping a straight razor might do the trick. I think I will like being able to see the cutting edge while I'm shaving. I've always felt like I'm cutting blind like a left handed person using right handed scissors.

I was trying too hard to get a perfect shave and was taking skin off. I tried doing a 3 pass shave without trying to get it perfect and that was the first time I got it perfect. Now I do it that way every time. I just shave like I don't care if I miss a bit and that seems to be the secret.

@@summcunt5421- congratulations! I'm not going to say that's a secret, it's not, but chasing a perfect shave isn't helpful. I rarely do more than a modified 2 pass shave. Generally, a single pass will give me a reasonable shave for the day. More than that is only if I'm heading out with the wife (or in the past, going on a date). Still, once you've gotten the hang of the blade and razor you're using, and are comfortable with it, you can start to experiment. I'd suggest different blades first - now's the time for those sampler kits.

Thank-you Matt. I will never ever go down the straight razor route simply because I couldn't be bothered with the whole sharpening routine. Like you, I use Proraso sensitive, and I understand for consistency in reviews of razors it makes sense, however, when you can, do you break out the 'artisan' stuff and if so, what do you like?

I'm strange in that when I use a shavette I use my right hand for the left side of my face and left hand for the right side.

Good demonstration, not so much for getting a definitive verdict on the comparison, but, yes, for seeing a demo of careful technique. One question, I'm a novice straight razor user. I shave close enough that the alum block prompts a good bit of stinging, but, when I clean off, I find that the shave I got wasn't so close, clean and smooth. How is that possible?
@dnichl
@dnichl 5 лет назад
I'd say not the keenest edge. or not doing a 2 or 3 pass shave. or your skin is plumped up from increased circulation from hot towel or from having the razor pass over roughly causing irritation/inflammation. or alum block is an astringent so it tightens up the skin exposing the tips of the whiskers more. any combination of that would do it.
@Martiniization
@Martiniization 5 лет назад
@@dnichl Thank you for giving me a decent clue as to what's the problem.
@trunkerdixon
@trunkerdixon 5 лет назад
You may not have the sharpest razor, but more passes = more irritation so be careful with that especially as a novice. My bet is that you are also pressing too hard or have the blade at the wrong angle in certain areas of your face - you are scraping rather than cutting hair. You can get away with a lot of those mistakes on your face, but that alum will make your neck howl! My advice - try to think of shaving as just wiping the lather off - be really gentle. Start with the blade flat on your skin and gradually lift it until it cuts hair, but no more. HTH. T

I have a Gold dollar. It ain't bad, but I want to get a Dovo. I don't shave with my Gold dollar, in fact I don't shave at all anymore, as I'm growing out my hair and beard for a whole year. I just collect knives and blades and am looking to obtain more straight razors.

I wish that my hands would work well enough to use a straight razor or a shavette for a full shave. I have this stupid neurological condition that robbed me of them several years ago BUT i can still use a safety razor! Dang, it always looks like it feels so good to shave with a straight razor!!! I may have to just go to the barber and pay for one, just as a treat for myself.

I’ve shaved with both. But I abused and hones with more confidence with the GD then the Dovo due the price range of each, and let me tell you I get a better shave with a GD then a Dovo. But still love my Dovo for it feels really nice in my hand then GD does.

Thee traditional way of shaving is get a hot and damp towel over your face to make the shin ready, then put on a shaving cream, shave your skin and clean it with a clean towel. Water? To make the towel hot, to make the lather and to clean the dry towel after shaving. Keeping your razor sharp? Chromium oxide on the leather and past it flat pulling away from you in the direction opposite to shaving, do this for about 15 minutes on each side. NEVER clean your razor with water or alcohol. To avoid rust, once the razor have been cleaned with a towel, add a couple drops of mineral oil on a clean portion of the towel and pass it over the edge, the best oil Is the laxative because is pure as it gets with no fragrance. As soon as you don't share your razor with someone else, you don't need to sanitize it. To finish you could use fancy face creams or just a plain hand sanitizer with aloe.

Most online sellers who claim that their razors are "shave ready" do not even know what they are talking about. Was yours promised to be shave ready? And you believed a stranger, who probably doesn't even shave with a straight razor? Verify the seller, if you expect it to be ready to rock when you get it. Ask around on the straight shaving forums. It's a small world.

Your relationship with your razor is like a friendship, at the beginning is an acquaintance, then as you interact with it, it became a friend, a close friend, trusted friend and finally a significant one. As with any relationship in your life go step by step, take your time, promoting or demoting it with the appropriate trust and respect. If you feel it won't ever be at least a trust friend, start over with a new razor, recycle your old razor and give that steel a chance to be something else.

A price tag doesn't always have to do with quality. Also has to do with where it's made. China vs. Germany.

Is it odd that I went from a straight edge to a safety razor? Not like I care and honestly I like both and I've been looking at the feather shavete just because it's less maintenance which is why I got into it in the first place

Wouldn't the real difference show in terms of how long the Dovo retains that sharpness without the need to grind again (assuming one does stop before and after each shave)?
