This new series from the Classic Car TV RU-vid channel looks at how cars transition from modern to classic, and why some do, and some don't. We also look at how classic car status affects values. Each video in the series includes interviews with experts who have some connection to the cars we are featuring and broad knowledge of the classic car market.
In this episode we look at the McLaren MP4-12C, McLaren's first series production car. We talk with the car's designer, Frank Stephenson, with Dean Lanzante, whose company took the McLaren F1 to victory at Le Mans in 1995 and with Alastair Bols, who launched McLaren's first roadcar showroom in London and now runs his own, very successful independent McLaren specialist outlet.
Thanks to:

I have a 12C Spider , just a amazing car to drive. That’s coming from Ferrari, Aston, Porsche. McLaren moved the game on and the competition has never caught up 11 year’s later. For me it has a timeless elegance and will stand the test of time. I am not selling mine any time soon!. Great video, looking forward to seeing more

The next car you should feature in your modern classic series is the 1991 Acura NSX. I have one that sits next to my 2012 McLaren MP4-12C Spyder in volcano red. Steve

You know, Steve, I've been thinking about that one myself! I've always been an admirer. The next video in the pipeline (perhaps the next two videos, actually) is Lotus-themed, but I do have a bit of a link to a friend of a friend with an NSX. I will reach out.

Really enjoyed the in-depth comments and perspective on the 12C. Never drove the 12C, but had a 570 spider for a couple of years and was so impressed I traded it for a 720 spider. Absolutely brilliant cars that will prevent me from ever going back to Ferrari or Porsche.

This is a fantastic video on a fantastic car. It was great to hear from the folks that helped make it a reality. Is it just me, or did I sense a little animosity from Frank towards McLaren? I too agree with your closing statements. The 12C is very special, and I think one day people are going to kick themselves for not buying one.

Really appreciate the time and effort you've put into making this video. The 12c is a car I absolutely love the look of, as with a lot of the mclarens. My favourite being the 765lt. I'm planning to gather some funds to get myself a 12c, I just hope they don't jump in price too much in the next year or so which would inevitably price me out. After that the rise in price would be great. Very interesting video to see the perspectives of these guys

The (MP4)12C Coupe is genesis of McLaren Automotive and embodies the original ethos of the company founders not least Ron Dennis himself. These credentials and connections ensure it's classic and collectible status. Later McLaren's reverted to the established Supercar formula, pointier/sharper/harsher, and while objectively "better" cars, lost their individuality. As Frank says the original swipe door (release), pre-cog gear shift/selector cars are and will be the ones to have 😎

I bought a 2014 12C Spider almost new and now only 2k miles. It sits in a humidity controlled garage. It’s rarely been wet. It always draws a smiling crowd for its wonderful curves and lines. Drives perfectly and is lightening fast. It’s a classic now, not 5 or 10 or 20 years time. Nick.

Brilliant video and nice to hear from the people who were there at the beginning, I'm a bit of a fan boy so didn't need too much convincing, just waiting for the lottery win ! Thinking about the original question and your closing comments. A bit left field, but how about a super low volume underdog, the Noble 600, is it really as good (or bad) as they say. We all love an underdog.....😉

One additional note. While the panelists all struggled to define what a classic car is, in the end they all seemed to be associating classic cars with appreciating collectibles. Personally, I've never equated a classic car with a collectible car. Or to put it differently, there are many cars out there that I view as classics that seem to be consistently depreciating in value, unlike most collectible cars. Note that I'm ignoring the pandemic bump that has occurred as it has impacted far more than just cars.

What also makes a classic and has not been mentioned in the video is how does it make you feel when you see a certain car passing in the street? A major factor for me in buying a classic is how it makes me feel inside when I see a car? The MP4-12C is a really beautiful looking car which pulls all the heart strings just as it would if you saw a very pretty girl walking down the street. It doesn't have any silly aero stuff hanging off the car. It has great lines and is a pretty car to look at. Personally, I think it is the best looking car McLaren have ever made and it certainly pulls at my heart strings. However being an engineer/designer my head would rule and I would have to pass on one due to the high cost of parts and the number of faults these cars can potentially have. You could so easily end up down a rabbit hole that so many Ferrari owners end up in, buying 348's, 355's 360's and 430's, where you buy the car for say £70-£80K and then end up spending that again over a few years trying to get it right, then end up selling it and saying what a huge mistake it was buying it in the first place...
@classiccartvfilms
@classiccartvfilms Год назад
Fair points - we think the MP4-12C is still a stunning looking car. And it turned heads everywhere we took it. On the subject of possible pain due to maintenance costs, the solution is to buy the right car in the first place, and make sure you have can afford a sensible maintenance budget. And buy a decent warranty! Companies such as Thorney Motorsport specialise in these early cars and offer comprehensive warranties. For the record, the car we featured has been owned by the guy who loaned it to us for about 5 years and has had virtually no faults during that time. It is true that sophisticated classics such as these that have been bought by people who can only afford to buy them, not maintain them, can be money pits.
@grahamtricker4103
@grahamtricker4103 Год назад
@@classiccartvfilms I agree, but so many who would buy such a car have very little experience or knowledge about such cars. A friend who works for a well known specialist garage told me during lockdown they were shipping out and delivering cars without the owners even driving them!!! I could never have imagined that. I would never buy any motor vehicle without a good look over the car, especially a drive of it too. I am aware of Thorney but even if there is a problem with the car like the gearbox it is still not a cheap car to fix and the parts from McLaren are still very expensive even if they have stock of them. I am not even sure if you needed a panel inside the car for example whether that would even be available. Take Mercedes for example: you can still buy parts over the counter for cars like the 190SL and 300SL which are 60+ years old. I have also bought cars over the years that came with a warrantee. Turns out that they were not worth the paper they were written on, so you would have to be extremely careful when choosing a warrantee to make sure it covered the main elements of the car and the major parts that are known to fail. I would also point out that this is not just aimed at McLaren, but also at anyone buying any used high end car...
@classiccartvfilms
@classiccartvfilms Год назад
@@grahamtricker4103 I think we are talking about a situation that has always existed. As nice cars become cheaper they are bought by people who can't afford to run them. It was ever thus - caveat emptor!
@grahamtricker4103
@grahamtricker4103 Год назад
@@classiccartvfilms Not strictly true. There is a big difference in buying and running sensible road cars as in Porsche for example. I've owned 4 Porsches, numerous top BMWs and Mercedes and all have been maintained by Porsche, BMW, Mercedes main garages as well as specialist independent garages and all have had work done and nothing that was remotely near the cost of another good family car. McLaren and Ferrari (older models) to name a couple can easily cost tens of thousands to fix which is very different. There are enough youtube videos from owners highlighting this...

When does a classic car stop being a classic? In a few decades when we might no longer be able to drive ICE-based vehicles on the road, or can no longer purchase fuel for them for that matter, will they be considered anything but obsolete? I don't doubt that certain cars will remain collectible to the wealthy few with the space to showcase them. But I do wonder if the average "car person" will retain any interest in those cars that are of absolutely no use to them or anyone else? Will future classics be EV's only?

@shanefanon
@shanefanon Год назад
No. The MP4 12C is not undervalued. It has poor quality parts in several area's that fail and even when replaced will often fail again. The maintenance expense can be very high for a model with little to no service record. Generally few 12C 's are driven more then 40 thousand miles and for years now there are products that inhibit the electronic speedometer from registering the correct mileage driven, the idea being people only want low miles McLaren 12c's . Such is the life where not much about the 12c is actually true. However, if you are not afraid to get your own hands dirty, the the 12c can be the perfect sports car for you. Basic simple maintenance with correct tools which are not cost prohibit ... inexpensive ... and a few speciallty replacement parts now widely known as failure points for the 12c and you have a Supercar that still runs rings around all the Lambo's and most of the modern Ferrari's for a 3rd to a 5th of their prices. And ... this is the best part ... still achieve good gas mpg's . Buy one now. The POS moniker it has had for years now is coming to an end as 2nd and 3rd owners are buying these and restoring these 12c's to better than Factory original spec and condition.

Interesting observations. We agree that the MP4-12C is incredible value at the moment, and can surely only see some readjustment at some point. Buy now, with eyes wide open!
