Serena was EXCEPTIONALLY GREAT in this match! Because they let their Golden Girl Maria scream way over the top, without as much as a warning. She was allowed to SCREAM not grunt, throughout the match, which can throw you off. This is some of the unfair mess Serena could never do. Maria had the green light on everything and still couldn’t beat Serena.

Sharapova screaming like a banshee really made me not like her. I respect what she achieved but man she was annoying as hell. Mary Carrillo wanted Sharapova to be the next great thing really badly. Oh i remember this match very well. I was 17 at that time, I live 10 hours behind Melbourne, so I set the alarm on early morning to see the match. Serena had a slow start, she lost the first set quite easily, Sharapova got the break in the 2nd set and i thought she will lost in 2 sets and i will go back to bed to get some sleep before the school, I didn't know that the match just started. As the time went by i was brushing my teeth, dressing up, eating my breakfast, packing my backpack in front of TV, I wasn't sure if I catch the bus to be in school on time (i wouldn't mind to be late for this match), but Serena closed the match right on time, I left the house, catch the bus and was sooo tired at school, but so happy that i could see the whole match, which is one of my all time favorite.

@Ed Brown, YES! I still consider that match to be the moment when all the years of grooming, practice, and playing gelled and is akin to a Saturn Rocket dropping its first stage and the second, most powerful engines firing to send it out of the atmosphere and into the stratosphere. I clearly remember Mary Jo Fernandez calling that match, and she was the first to say, "While all the doom criers have been saying she's done, I have never doubted her tenacity. I didn't expect her resurgence to come this quickly, but she has been improving with every natch here exponentially in her power, confidence, instinct, and DAZZLING footwork. I don't think I've ever seen her adjust and improvise, turning defense to offense as quickly as she is tonight." What is MOST remarkable to me (and always will be) is that VERY early on, Richard Williams admitted that Serena was conceived because he began to worry {while looking at 3-month-old Venus} that Venus was going to be lonely as he put his Mad Genius plan into action and should have a playmate. (Word choice or Prophecy?) He soon realized when they were both beginning to play that Venus would always be the protector, but that Serena had a killer instinct on the court, no matter the opponent. He didn't get many future details wrong!

I think her shoulder injury which affected her serve really hindered her chances of beating serena, because her serve was quality, even as good as serenas before the shoulder issue, shame really, would have been a better rivalry if not for the shoulder, we could have been treated to many more matches like this, but her serve was never the same

@@andrewbennett4661I wouldn’t say it was as good as Serena’s, not even close. Not as powerful, not placed as well, not as much disguise. It was a good serve, but it never was truly great. Yes. Serena needs to remember who tf she is. But I know we’re gonna reach 25 slam. #goserena

She should be getting back to her form soon. Having a baby takes a toll on the body.

The press wanted a Great White Hype so badly that they would support a non-American athlete over one of our own. Ridiculous. It got to where I stopped watching American press whenever I could b/c the commentators were so biased.

True. But they never got it. Serena made sure of that.

The rediculous thing is, that the media always made a big hustle and bustle before the match between these 2 players, although everyone could know, that Sharapova would have no chance at all. The rivalry didn't exist on the tennis court, it was way too one-sided and just boring.

Not at the time of this match, though. Maria led their head-to-head 2-1.

True, but they have been doing that for the hole time until Sharapovas doping issue in 2016 or so. But yeah the first matches were very promising @@fundhund62

Serena was slimmer in these matches. Wish she could shake about 15-20lbs so she can come back.

not really a rivalry when the two are on different levels (of talent and more so entirely different levels of likability hahaha) serena is the one!!! if you can’t admit it you don’t need to say why... we all know why lol
@xavierrobinson200
@xavierrobinson200 3 года назад
I guess you can say it changed their rivalry but Serena was always way more talented and eventually would've been in the same situation as today. Just maybe a 15 have streak instead of 18 or 19. Whatever it is

Y’all don’t even care about the details it seems when it comes to the “doping” scandal, Maria wasn’t even taking meldonium until mid to late 2006. So her best tennis was arguably when she wasn’t even taking it, yet people will still say she never would’ve won any matches without it. Plus meldonium is hardly a PED at all. People think it’s some incredibly strong steroid that the East Germans would juice with but it isn’t. Otherwise it would’ve been banned decades ago

Man if Sharapova moved and played like this her whole career she’d definitely make their rivalry better and have more wins for herself. Serena just improved & Sharapova sort of declined over the years she wasn’t as athletic as Serena but this match she was moving and a nice comeback by Serena!!!
