Compared to most people I know who often only know the popular songs by bands or only know the big name bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc. I feel like I know of a lot of fairly obscure stuff (by comparison to the bands mentioned) and know a lot of information about subgenres, lineups and band history. Then I listen to this channel and it's like, holy fuck I know NOTHING. Most people I know can't name more than 5-10 Black Sabbath songs AT BEST, even people who claim to be "huge" Sabbath fans. I own about 80% of their albums, can name a lot of their members. Then Pete, Chris Alo (Especially Chris Alo), Steve Keeler, Martin Popoff and Chris Alo (Again) just go on about concert set lists, album artwork and so much other stuff that's totally beyond me and I feel like a 4th grader who felt smart among kindergarteners and then walked into a room full of PHDs and realized holy fuck I know NOTHING. That's why I enjoy the channel though, it's great to learn so much from people who are so knowledgeable and passionate about music and delve deeper into bands than just the few popular songs and albums.

There defiinitely was a thing in the late 80s with bands that weren't really metal but dressed the part so to speak. For whatever presumably market driven reason they wanted to look metal in a sort of safe, pseudo dangerous kind of way whilst playing very accessible commercial music. A common term for these bands, exemplified by such acts as Winger and Poison, aside from hair metal, was "posers" or poser metal.

@b.g.5869
@b.g.5869 3 года назад
@@Gregbaltzer I don't think it's because it's not what people want, it's more that it's hard to play in that style and not be written off as a Ozzy era Black Sabbath ripoff/tribute band. There was a band called Ghost that was actually really good but I could never take them too seriously because they sounded too much like Ozzy era Sabbath. It's somewhat like the reason a lot of people can't take Greta Van Fleet seriously, in that case because they sound too much like Zeppelin.

@@b.g.5869 I don't think that's true at all. There are tons of Doom bands that were influenced by Sabbath but sound nothing like Sabbath eg. Candlemass, Cathedral, Solitude Aeturnus, Witchfinder General. I could go on. It's the same as not every thrash band sounds like Metallica, or every Death Metal band sounds like Death. It's just that most metalheads are generally looking for music that is more faster, or more extreme. I've known guys who don't like doom metal simply because they find it too slow, not because of Sabbath, they want stuff that is faster. I was like that in the 80s. Great quote regarding musical history " It was still just Metal to us" is right. Before the "Hair" label was applied nobody looked down on the artists or music. Also regarding opinions on production values, obviously budget counts for a lot, and just like any other musician some producers are better than others but if the basic good material is not there nobody can polish a turd!!
@LuchaLibertaria
@LuchaLibertaria 3 года назад
'Hair' label was popularised in the mid-90s precisely for that: so that people don't think well about 80s Hard Rock Bands & don't demand it. Just like 70s classic rock/prog bands were demonised as 'self-indulgent hippies' and 'dinosaur' bands. These labels are not created to define a musical style, they are created to tell people that they are not 'supposed to' like that music.

1970s US Metal Aerosmith - Round and Round, Amboy Dukes - Prodigal Man, Montrose - Dreamer, Dust - Learning to Die, Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come, Blue Oyster Cult - 7 Screaming Diz Busters, 1980s US Metal Riot - Altar of the King, Hyksos - the Kings , Arion - Demon Lady, Demon Flight - Dead of the Night, Bitch - Saturdays, Leather Angel - We Came to Kill, Cirith Ungol - I'm Alive, Touch - Don't Know what Love Is , Manilla Road - Cage of Mirrors, Chumbi - US Metal, Van Halen - I'm On Fire, Motley Crue - Live Wire, Americade - On the Prowl , Crysis - Hallsville, Manowar - Dark Avenger, Hawaii - Angels from the Dust, Culprit - Fools, All these songs came out between 1978 and 1983 on my 1980s List. Some were a bit commercial, others devastating in their Heaviness, but all are American and recorded albums consecutive with the same time period as NWOBHM. I noticed most of the bands mentioned on this show released a little later on the scene than the ones I mentioned

There's no 'hair metal' look, in the 80s pretty much all the Hard Rock/Metal bands had long hair. (one of the reasons why hair metal is such a meaningless and dumb term) They had a more glammed up look on the cover of Under Lock and Key tho, I guess they wanted to look more glossy 😀 Again at the time from Pop-stars like Prince to alternative bands like the Cure lots of bands had glossy images.

Kenny Powell of Omen hailed from Oklahoma; I think the bassist Jody Henry and drummer Steve Wittig were from there too. Henrietta, Oklahoma as I remember reading. The original vocalist J.D. Kimball hooked up with them in LA and joined the band. J.D. was an incredible power metal vocalist. Perfect voice for Omen's brand of gritty, dungeon-deep, medievalesque, mystical, sword & sorcery themed songwriting.

Pete, this episode is bringing back scores of childhood and adolescent memories for me. Thanks for this one. Have you guys ever done an episode on the old metal magazines of this era? Metal Mania (not metal Maniacs--different title entirely), Aardschok America, Metal Rendezvous, RIP, Creem Metal, (including their Power Metal specials and also issues that were simply collections of fan letters, which were PRICELESS funny reading), Faces, (I think Faces put out some thrash/speed special issues), Kerrang, Circus, Hit Parader, Rock Fever and then along with that, all the various fanzines that came and went. When I was really delving into the underground as a kid circa 1985-1986, mags like Metal Mania and Aardschock opened up entire new worlds for me. Every local stationery and drugstore had metal mags on the racks. I still have some of my old ones up in the attic, though others sadly fell apart over the years! Something to think about if you've never addressed it before. Also, anyone of a certain age from the tri-state area will most likely fondly recall the U-68 Power Hour on UHF Channel 68!!! An early Merry Christmas to you and all of yours. Safe, healthy and happy. \m/ \m/

Why did Martin Popoff say 'Lars Ulrich created Hair Metal'? Does anybody know the rationale behind that? Putting aside the caricaturization of 80s Hard Rock/Glam bands as 'hair bands' (as if other metal bands looked like marine recruits), I don't see the connection. If we are talking about early 80s LA Hard Rock scene, Van Halen and Quiet Riot created that scene in the late 70s.
@LuchaLibertaria
@LuchaLibertaria 3 года назад
@Martin Popoff That scene was already there by the time Lars Ulrich moved to California in the Summer of '80. It' d be a far stretch of the imagination to say Lars Ulrich created that scene. LA Hard Rock scene was the result of 70s Heavy Rock Mixed with 70s Glam & Punk ( Ramones, Pistols, Gen X etc) If anything, Eddie Van Halen created that scene, which took a backseat when Hardcore Punk explosion hit LA in '80/'81 & then gained momentum again when Club owners started to book Hard Rock Bands instead of Hardcore shows due to violence at gigs. Quiet Riot' s success in '83 led to the labels signing other bands which created the LA Hard Rock/Metal explosion. PS: Neither these bands nor their fanbase called them' hair metal' as if they were some talentless buffoons that formed a band after they had been to a hair saloon. They were called Glam bands or lumped together as Hard Rock& Metal Bands.
@LuchaLibertaria
@LuchaLibertaria 3 года назад
@Martin Popoff I'd say the similarity between LA Hard Rock Scene and the NWOBHM was the influence of Punk & DIY ethics (self-financed albums etc) . Just like Punk influenced UK Hard Rock scene, it influenced US Hard Rock scene as well. People tend to forget how big Punk was at the time. Otherwise NWOBHM bands were practically unknown in US. (with the exception of Maiden, Leppard and maybe Saxon) Metallica would cover Diamond Head songs in their earlier shows without telling it(pretending its their own songs) & people wouldn't notice it.

They are Melodic Hard Rock/Melodic Metal bands, and there are still lots of bands that make that kind of music today. Martin Popoff lumps all Melodic Hard Rock/Glam/even some Melodic Metal bands together and ridicules it as 'hair metal' and tells how Nirvana finished it off - so if you want to listen to Melodic Hard Rock, you've to listen to those bands from the 80s. Its to keep people stuck up in nostalgia and he sells nostalgia.
