Dave Mustaine is the founder, lead vocalist, and rhythm & lead guitarist of the Grammy Award-winning thrash metal band Megadeth. Look for the band's new album "The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!" on September 2, 2022. www.megadeth.com
Dave has been to hell and back a dozen times. He is the man. I worked for Dave/Megadeth from 1984 to 1987. We got along well. Don`t be fooled about the haters. They do NOT know Dave.He is intense, funny, very smart, goofy, geeky, well read and a good friend.
@@88najsf-rs2rm He was funny as hell. The last time we spoke was when he had just moved to Scotsdale Az. I could tell the minute he picked up the phone that he was drinkin again. Prob. freebasing as well. IU wanted to get off the phone after 15 minutes of him talking a mile a minute, and it just made my gut sour.
That's the power of having amazing guitar riffs back in that day. It's alot harder now since pretty much everything has been done but you can still bite the bullet and give your own take on a classic riff, you will always get the people with no music theory knowledge that try to accuse you of "stealing".. Like no dude, that's how scales and keys work. It only sounds good to most people when you're in key or in scale
@@jameslonano5659 YES I'm glad you mentioned that Talent speaks for itself. He made it alone when the others were just down right codependent. I'm sorry but it just speaks for itself
As a teenage kid in 1992 I heard Symphony of Destruction playing on TV for the first time. I've been a metal head ever since. He literally formed my musical taste for over 30 years.
I feel you, mine was master of puppets by Metallica. Right after hurricane katrina living in a RV. I was 13 and played the album and couldn’t believe how amazing it was. It changed me entirely and my mom walked in and just smiled when I said Metallica is awesome.
What a fantastic song. I was 7 years old, my neighbor was a junior in high school. GIANT metalhead, and I thought he was the coolest dude in the world. I have been a Metallica and Megadeth fan ever since he's been blasting the two bands out of his stereo system. You da man, John! 🤘
Most Metal Heads here in Australia consider Dave Mustaine to be a LIVING LEGEND. He has stayed true to his art, and the music industry, even though he has been treated poorly by many since his era. He is still producing some of the best music around in Metal...and gives back to all the young musicians , to keep the flame going. MUCH RESPECT!! :)
Metallica in Aus is huge, Megadeth not so much so it's a niche following. And I've never known fans celebrate their own dik riding like Megadeth fans, it's truly unique.
That was an amazing album. Definitely in my top 5. But in recent years Dave has become a joke. They sound like a Megadeth tribute band....and not a great one.
Agreed. As much as I loved Metallica growing up they are not as consistent and haven’t hit the highs of their early work where as megadeth still releases awesome music
Dave is one of those immortal tales of a man who went through absolute hell many times over, and came out on the other side to be a pretty solid dude. Keep in mind, in his youth, this dude was too extreme for a young Metallica. That's proof that even if you walk to the beat of a completely different drum, and people don't see your suffering, you can still fight to be an extremely productive, and influencial person without having to bottle up all of the trauma. Dave always faced his issues head on. Get kicked out of the biggest band in history, oh well, I'll just form another band and start from scratch. As much as his firing from Metallica hurt Dave, in retrospect, it drove him to be something special. Metallica is a band, Megadeth was Dave Mustain. Gotta give Dave Ellefson a shout out too. He was the other side of that two headed coin.
Took my son to his first Megadeath Concert at bridge stone arena, They rocked as always and got one of our bucket lists checked! Dave please get your wines and beer in Chattanooga,Tennessee stores and buisnesses please!
Dave is so amazing. I am a guitar player and playing Dave´s riffs still is a very complicated thing. He is the best! He is the real thing better than Metallica
I remember when both bands were competing for years. Peace Sells, and Puppets, Rust in Peace, and Justice being released around the same time between the bands. Great era. That was the Metal era, and Extreme Metal was evolving as well.
Dave Mustaine has been a part of my life since 85, I'm so glad he is doing so well. Thanks Dave for being such a great part of my best memories , You made my life better....
Look at him now, 20 in Metallica, 60 in Megadeth and Megadeth now is producing better metal than Metallica by far. He still does it for the love of the music not the love of the money like Metallica now. DON'T get me wrong I still love Metallica, but Megadeth I listen to daily, Metallica I don't.
In no way is Megadeth better, theres a reason why one is waaay more popular than the other. Dont get me wrong, i love megadeth, but you cant compare them.
@@Cazz8203plz prove Dave isn’t a better guitar player with harder metal hits that he intended to do the name is called Metallica yet there not as metal? 😌waaaa
Having mustaine on the podcast shows rogans a metal fan. Mustaine is thrash metal royalty, songs like holy wars, the man can write a riff thats for sure
Yes. They do their podcasts on Spotify and then they trickle in clips on RU-vid and then depending on the popularity of that podcast anywhere from 6 months to a year they'll put the podcast out on RU-vid

I remember seeing this full interview here on YT back in 2022 I believe. So, it's already been uploaded before. Don't know the reason behind them reuploading this now. Maybe it got a copyright strike, but then again... what for? :P
I remember driving an hour away to get a bouncy castle rental for my daughters 2nd birthday while listening to this interview. That was almost 2 years ago haha. Love dave. Seen megadeth 10 times! Used to play guitar in a megadeth cover band. Megadeth will always have a place in my heart!
That's what a lot of ppl do, than his haters say he's always crying about Metallica. There was a while where Metallica never came up in conversation and interviews, but for the past 20 years, ppl can't wait to bring it up. They bring it up, not Dave. I don't ever recall a time where nobody asked about Metallica, and Dave was just like "......so let's talk about Metallica, you know I was in that band right?" I'm 99% sure that's the absolute truth
What is trying to do is relate, Mustaine, to everybody else because nobody really knows who Dave mustaine is until they relate him to metallica, who more people know about. He is just trying to integrate him into his audience. People who don't know him, aren't sick of the Metallica-Mustaine correlation like we are
He asked him what it was like looking back on his crazy career. Before he mentioned Metallica, he mentioned Megadeth. And when you're recapping someone's storied career, being a former member of Metallica is def a noteworthy mention.
It was a genuine question actually. I’m all for revival of metal. Top 20’s etc still show taylor swift-like crap and rap mostly I think, hence the question.
Ohhh. I remember bying "Killing is my Business..." on vinyl back in the day, when "The Skull Beneath the Skin" hit my speakers.....holy crap. Don't listen to trash much these days, but the four first platters from Megadeth are staples I listen to even up to this day. Mr. Mustaine is a legend. (and only 8 years older than me)
Dave is Amazing. I've liked him since he started. He's been through so much n he's gotten better in music n life each year. Congratulations n Thanks. Us Metal Heads are Thankful.
Omg all I want to be brother Joe Rogan so one day I can grow up and interview my ultimate legend hero. Dave mustaine!!!! Changed my life bro. I'm addicted. Love you pimpin!!! Keep kickin ass... Wow!!! Inspired!!!
He got scammed by Metallica. Kicked him out simply for doing what they all did but better than them. Was the most ambitious and they didn’t want him as front man which he naturally was. Stole his music, just the fact he alone started megadeth and got them huge shows how much talent he has.
I'm biased because i'm a heavy metal fan but I kinda wish Joe did a little bit more research before some of his podcast. A lot of missed opportunity to ask interesting question and not the usual one here
Agreed. He didn't talk about other band members or specific albums etc as much as I like hearing about martial arts and stuff could've had more stories about Ellefson , Poland, friedman, menza, or Samuelsson etc
59:40 i have heard Dave talk about this magic thing before, and it is always with such deep regret and remains very guarded about it. He fully believes in black magic because of something that happened, and i think he believes he is responsible for Cliff's death. Kirk took his job, and some of the footage of Metallica just after Dave was fired shows how ruthless the rest of the band were when talking about Dave. Living it up while he was in despair. And its no secret that Dave hated Kirk for replacing him. And if you remember, Kirk and Cliff drew straws for the better bunk. Cliff ended up where Kirk was meant to sleep, which was ultimately a death sentence. I don't believe in black magic myself, if it worked everyone would be at it! But Dave was quite into it apparently, and ive always wondered if he tried to put some kind of hex on Kirk. Then, when the story came out about Cliff's death, how it happened and how Kirk narrowly missed the same fate, Dave REALLY believed it was too much of a coincidence and blamed himself ever since. I hope not because that would be a terrible guilt to mistakenly carry.
Jehovah's witness, LOL I remember reading about Dave being one years ago. in 1987. Back in 1980 when we Moved from New jersey to Vermont. we stayed the first Month with my Aunt & uncle, cousins. I remember saying to my Aunt Judy, Oh Great Easter is in 4 Days! : ) she said to me we Don't celebrate Easter. Me - how come? My Aunt - Because we are Jehovah's Witnesses, I was like what is a Jehova's witness? I found out the Quick. Right there i was like NO way would i ever become that. No Christmas? NO fkn Way. im 53 & Agnostic & to this day Christmas is my Favorite Holiday.
Im glad they didnt spend alot of time on the Metallica vs Megadeth drama. Its nothing new and we;ve heard it all before. This was a great conversation on getting to know Dave Mustaine as human being. Great rock talk
Teaching yourself to play an instrument is not as difficult as some seem to think. I grew up with musician parents and music was just a normal everyday part of family life. As a teenager my mom gave me a book that had piano chords charted in it and gave me a brief explanation of how songs are nothing more than repeating patterns of chords and said if I can memorize the chords then I can play anything. So I did, then soon after my dad told me that it was the same with the guitar and if I can memorize the chords then I can play anything, Over 30 years later and if an instrument has strings I play it. I have over 160 videos here on my channel of me playing all those instruments, and I was totally self taught. And if I can do it, then anyone can do it...... and should.
I always loved Dave! A lot of people say he's a dick or this and that, I'll tell you what, that guy has exceptional talent, has never resorted to a political stance outside of his songs that he writes. I will always respect that! People have no idea how much talent and ingenuity it takes to play something so complex, like he usually does. he's very very good at keeping people's interest in the song. People strongly prefer simple music and simple words and if they can't get that they usually aren't very interested in it. it's too difficult for them to understand. His songs have a high degree of technique and intricacy in them and it's amazing and shows how good he is, that they made it to be one of the top tier metal bands in history. None of the other bands could do that. Megadeth is the only one. Sir Mustaine is both uniquely creative and very clever. Almost 50 years old and I still Play along with my darkest hour and set the world on fire at least once a week
Dave is Metal Legendary , he is definitely in my top 3 guitarist of my all time of listening to Music/Rock/Metal thank you Joe Rogan for having Dave on your show he such an inspiration in life not just music 🤘💀🤘
I wonder how it's gonna be until Lars shows up like ohh yeah I can play drums!!!!!! yeah guys I got the drums !!!!! Don't worry about the drums cause I made metal ica ya know And then here comes the wammy wammy bar
seen Megadeth in Belfast waaaaaay back & Dave apologised to all present about his comments on the Troubles & sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. i have a great respect for artists who own their mistakes & apologise publicly. they then went on to play Anarchy in the UK & we lost it.. amazing gig. even tho i moved away from metal & became a techno dj/producer, i will always have a lil place for Mega. and my Dad HATED their music 😆😆 great chat
Kerry doesn’t get enough credit for how good a rhythm player he is. Whether it’s Angel of Death, Postmortem, and Raining Blood by Slayer, or Chosen Ones and Rattlehead by Megadeth, he nails them. Anyone who can play a hard ass song like Chosen Ones is an awesome guitarist.
And black magic spells hexs curses and the reason he was saved would blow your mind it has to do with death that's all I will say love long and prosper DM
I listened to this a year or two ago when it first came out on Spotify. As a massive megadeth fan, it was a pretty disappointing episode. They could have touched on sooooo much more than they did.
My first concert was Megadeth. I think I was 14 years old. It was in Offenbach am Main in Germany. I love Dave Mustaine. You have to love him. YOU MUST, AINE'T YOU?
This conversation was all over the place. From wrestling to Coca-Cola to curses. Very little about Megadeth or Metallica or music related. If you want to something funny about Dave find his book. He is telling the story of his life in a funny way.
Nothing wrong with being self-taught on the guitar. I'm self taught going on 37 years. Got a chord book and played my albums over and over until I understood.
Joe after reading on and on that Coca Cola web page, "they use it to make people numb", Dave - "So does boring people" LOL! Totally went over Joes head. Dave actually threw in quite a few of those under the radar quips. Gotta love that guy. Never change Dave
HOLY WARS #1 If I had the opportunity to talk to Dave for three hours I definitely wouldn't waste half the time on Christianity and Coke. Mad respect though I am very appreciative for the vid.
I went to a Megadeth concert at the Agora Amphitheatre in Cleveland when I was 21 with my cousin and girlfriend. The Misfits opened up for them. It was the Cryptic Writings tour. I remember Dave Mustane saying hail to the devil and got booed by the audience.
That's odd, because Dave got saved about 5 years before that. We are about the same age and I've been a Megadeth fan for most of it. After the release of "Peace Sells.... But Who's Buying" he even stopped playing " The Conjuring" live.
Aside from insane raw talent, Dave is truly smart and wise. A metal god of the likes of all the Greats we all love and know. Always anticipating the next epic Megadeath release!
Dave has matured so much and is so much more eloquent than the 80’s when I first remember listening to him. I am glad he has developed a relationship with Christ and would love to hear his perspective. He mentioned Alice Cooper. Please Dave do it!. That’s not pushing. It is telling your story. On another note, I saw Dave on thr Experience tour and I actually commented on his social media that he had the most authentic Hendrix tone which the Dweezil Zappa and Eric Johnson tubing session tripped me out to hear about. Dave was definitely a fish out of water on that tour but I thought his tone was perfect and he did thr most authentic covers. so major respect. The other guitarists were putting their own spin on the music. Which is fine but that is ther genre. Dave did a perfect cover.
10:09 lmao. How bout MegaDave backpedaling like that 😂 Acts like, he knows exactly what it means. Then, walks it right back at 10:44 😂😂 And just to clarify to super fan boys that wanna get all defensive & think I'm just out to shit talk/hate on Dave...I'm actually a HUGE Megadeth fan, since Rust in Peace. Doesn't mean I'm immune to knowing what bullshit smells like.
