Classic Game Room - ARMOR BATTLE review for IntelliVision 

Ah this was one of the few games my dad was any good at and could give us kids a challenge. For him it was a battle of will as our soft youthful flesh was more vulnerable to the vicious design of the controllers. All battles had to be the full 50 point challenge! Our revenge was using his predictability against him with the judicious use of the mine - watching his tantrums as his last tank hit one is a cherished memory.

This game waited 34 years for a review ....about a damn time I say.

I just love this show. It awsome to see someone putting so much love in playing video games! Thank you Mark for showing us the importance of having fun. You put a smile on my face every weeks! Long live to CGR!!!!

This game my friend and I played back in the early 1980s. We mutually agreed that this was not a good game. We loved Sea Battle so much more. The problem with armor battle is that it was too defensive and promoted a stalemate. The tanks could go forward and had the same range and armaments. The tanks could rotate but not back up. That was the problem. With no turret, you must pull forward into the range of your opponent. Then shoot, steer, and drive away. At the very moment you pull in range of your opponent he fires. Before you can shoot, turn, and drive away his shot hits you. After he has shot, he is not in motion. He immediately turns and drives away. He successfully avoids your shot.

Hold the controller correctly for petes sake. Cradle your left hand under the controller to use the side buttons and use your right hand for controlling with the disc. With the Intellivision you have to throw out your left hand d-pad logic out the window.

I must say your video reviews have really grown on me! Your sense of humor, although an acquired taste, was making me laugh today! I'm really digging your channel these days. This video really made me laugh by the way :D

I still have a working Intellivision with almost 30 games. So precious. :) That game was cool back then.

The Intellivsion controllers we had sported soft rubber side buttons. They didn't last too long but were much more comfortable.

I love how back then they didnt try to mimic an arcade layout on a controller (besides atari). Ya know, movement on the left, buttons on the right. Instead they went vertical. Ive never seen an arcade cabinet with a joy stick and buttons in an i formation.

So this is what its like to be super early on mark's videos.... Achievement unlocked.

George Plimpton could've made a comparison between this game vs. the tank games from Atari's Combat cartridge.

Those wonderful absolutely re-used in every Intellivision game sounds remind me of my childhood. And that is an Intellivision 2. When you gonna review Shark! Shark!???

Last night I had a dream where I was at a used game store and I saw Mark there and we did stuff.

I think the problem with pain in your fingers is that the game makers had the Mk1 console in mind when they made it, not the Mk2 with the crappier made controllers.

I opened the video in a new tab and was not paying attention, and the intro scared the crap out of me.

Cavemen were used in the Intellivisions controller testing devision. They gave them 2 thumbs up.

I just got an Intellivision 1, and the controls aren't nearly as bad as I've read. The side buttons on mine are soft and rubbery. Maybe it's just the Intellivision 2.

Going to respectfully disagree with you on this one, Mark. First off, the Intellivision 1 controller is way more comfortable than the Intellivision 2 controller. And once you're used to either controller, they aren't bad at all really. Armor Battle blows the doors off Armor Ambush. It looks, sounds, and plays better. Armor Ambush is Armor Battle Jr as far as I'm concerned.

love the tv! just cause i love the show so much i actually have the exact same style tv, but in a 36 inch model, and i would be willing to give it to you absolutely free. just bring about 3 strong guys, a dolly, some rollers and a pick up truck and its all yours! i know you want it, 36 inch sony trinitron 480p flat screen. cant get much better then that

I got fingers of steel. I made them playing Ultimate MK 3 on the Sega Genesis. The cross kept broking so I put a toothpick in there. That´s a finger os steel.

Original intellevion controller is better than the intellevision 2. Same design, but worse materials.

You say the game's "very very fun." Thanks! All the criticism is for the hand controller. You're playing an Intellivision II, which IS murder on the thumbs. The Intellivision had rubber action buttons; on the Intellivision II they are hard plastic. I'd recommend obtaining an original console. Sorry; we never cared for the Intellivision II (they didn't consult us programmers). All you hardcore fans: get an original console (especially if you're going to review the games)! You'll thank me later!

why no turrets? because it is armor battle, not tank battle. they are assault guns, LOL. And if there is moving turret, then you have one extra button to push...hahahat

The Atari 2600 verison is called "Armor Ambush". You got it right at the beginning of the video, and then called it "Armor Assault" a couple of times later in the video, then got it right again at the end of the video. Most Intellivision games were ruined not only by the controller, but by Mattel feeling the need to make use of all those buttons whether it was necessary or not. The 2600 version of this game proves it is perfectly playable with just a joystick and 1 button. The same goes for Intellivision Space Battle vs. 2600 Space Attack.

There is simply no way one could overstate just how really painful those controllers were to use.
