Try this updated Classic Pilates Mat Class: • Video
We can thank Joseph Pilates for this classic Pilates Flow sequence. I am putting a spin on it and teaching all of the Pilates mat exercises at a Level 1 pace.
This is a 40 minute at home Pilates workout with no equipment.
If you know the classic Pilates Flow Sequence, you know that many of the exercises are very advanced. This level 1 Pilates class for beginners will guide you through the classic Pilates mat workout with many variations of traditional Pilates mat exercises so you can get the benefit of the Pilates flow and start to build a strong Pilates foundation to support a more advanced Pilates class in the future.
The Classic Pilates Flow is an effective Pilates workout with no equipment. If you would like to view the original Pilates flow, make sure to check out this video: • Video

I love this class! I've done it 3 times now over the last week and a half and I'm already noticing slight changes with my flexibility, and my knee and back pain is better on days when I've done this! This was my first introduction to pilates and I'm really enjoying myself, and I plan on working my way up to your harder classes eventually. Thank you for this amazing video, you've really opened my mind to how good pilates can be!

Wonderful routine, Beth. Thank you so much. It didn’t feel like 40 mins. I had to use some of your variations for a couple of the exercises but the pace and range is perfect. It really helps to prepare and build up to the movement. Thank you again.

This was a perfect flow for me this morning. I am starting to feel more stability with my leg circles and in every exercise. Its amazing how much more I felt the abs as soon as I started paying more attention to each exercise in details. Thanks!

This routine felt very long and more intense, but very enjoyable. From the beginning I was already feeling my core stress as well as my butt bones as I struggle to keep my balance my body weight. Pulling up both my legs was also very challenging because of my balance and weak core. However, I really enjoy laying on my belly and doing the spine variations because it makes me feel my back and breathing. I turned out to be very exhausted after the workout but it feels real good learning to extend my body in steady motion.

Found this really helpful and pleasurable but also felt like I was working, I recently over stretched my hamstrings and now I can't feel any pain when I raise my leg. Thank you very much and I will be doing this class again

I recently overstretched my hamstrings as well and have been doing mat Pilates exclusively for lower body workouts. I definitely need to add this routine into my rotation!

We don’t breath out through our mouths in our yoga class as it dries out the mouth. We Breath In through the nose then out through the nose 😊 great class 👍🏼

Great question. Typically level 1 is "easier" than level 2.

Excellent class for beginners!! Most other "beginners" pilates videos are hard as heck for someone who hasn't exercised in years, but this one, I was (mostly) able to do every move!! Thank you!!

Re previous comment, at 15.11 in this video you inhale to spinal lift and exhale to go down. Lots like that throw me 🤪🤪🤪🥰

So I'm pretty new to Pilates and I did not enjoy this video at all. Way to fast for an actual beginner. Maybe other people have more experience but ya. Like I just started as per physio

The first time I did this routine, I made it to 20 min. Then, I started doing other shorter videos and finally I started going to an in-person class. It's probably 2 months later now and I found that this video was too easy😅 That's what I like about Pilates, the progress is very clear and usually doesn't take long.

hi! thank you for this free classes. Question: During the rolling of the back and pelvis back and forth in a sitting position, I feel a dull pain and pressure in the tailbone area. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong? Thank you! Ruth

That can be very common, but with any pain a different variation or completely different exercise would be ideal in this case.

Even though I couldn't do a lot if the positions where I was balancing on my butt I really enjoyed this session...imma keep doing this until I don't have to take a break. Made it like 25 minutes before I had to stop. Thanks for this! I will be back tomorrow!!

This is a great video and Beth is a great instructor but I do worry I’m not doing things right. How do I know if I’m engaging my core or just sucking my belly in? And if I can’t get my feet totally flat on the ground when sitting up with my knees bent, will I injure myself? Should I just go cross legged at those times? And I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do a roll up. Does it ever get easy? Lol

All with time. There is no perfect in Pilates, progress. And it does get easier and then we add another challenge in just the right way.🙃

What can I do in place of the rolling back and forth? I traumatized my tailbone a few yrs ago and I’m not able to roll/sit back on it.

Really anything that feels good. That exercise works as a little massage for the spine (if it feels good!), balance and abs. So a stretch would be good.

Im a pilates beginner and is it normal to feel neck tension at the start? After my first couple classes I felt soreness mainly in my core, but a little bit in neck and traps. I know I'm supposed to support my neck with my core, but even trying so hard there's still tension. Am I doing it wrong or is it just a matter if gaining more core strength with more practice?

The neck does work in a lot of exercises, but extra tension isn't ideal. You may like to move with the new 7-Day series as an option.

I took the certificate course in power Pilates last year,it was the classic Pilates mat work out,but it doesn’t look the same as this,what kind of Pilates is this?

This is the classic Pilates 34 exercises that are in Joseph Pilates book return to life. I added a lot of variations to make the class more accessible.

Throughout the routine, I have noticed that my breathing is off. I inhale when I exhale, vice versa, and even forget to take a breath. I'm not sure why, but it could because I used to breathing a certain way when weight lifting. I need to be more conscious of my breathing and make sure it flows naturally with the movements.

Such a nice way to wake up on a snowy day! I liked the exercise toward the end that wasn't exactly a push-up, but a modified plank half-push up. My arms and abs are really weak and I actually felt them engage this morning. Very exciting!

That was a great class. I am in my 60's, so it was hard to do some of the moves, but most of the moves were very helpful and I really liked the pace and explanations.

Thank you so much for this class. I did some classical Pilates years ago with Stott (on vhs, oh my lol) and Windsor so I have some familiarity with the exercises. Now I’m getting back into but my low back is sensitive and I’m carrying many extra pounds. This class was perfect for me because it references things I remember, unlike some of the beginner contemporary classes I tried, but it is tailored so I wasn’t attempting things I can’t quite do yet. Just wanted to say thank you so much! I’ve subscribed and will be looking for more here!

I' used to do pilates some 10 years ago but stopped after my teacher left (could not get used to those who followed). I love this video and the way you gently encourage your students, while explaining that this is just the entrance point for much more complex and demanding exercises. That helps my body remember the moves while not discouraging my mind by too fast a pace. Great lesson!

This is a perfect beginners class. I have tried other beginner classes and they were SO hard. This was challenging but more about focusing on positioning, breathing, and movement. Loved it

I was able to find level 1 and level 2. How many levels are there? If there are more than 2. Are the videos here on RU-vid so that I may save them. So, that as I advance to the next level I am able to with ease. Please and thank you.

There are 3 levels. There are not as many level 3/advanced classes available on RU-vid compared to the Membership option.

I just started using your Level 1 Pilates on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays for week now. Someone suggested it to me. I really enjoyed your Level 1 here on RU-vid. I will definitely be sticking with this. I can see myself really going from beginner to advance with Pilates. I actual did water aerobics tonight and I was really trying to be mindful with my breathing in my nose and out my mouth. So thank you for that tidbit in your class.

I'm not sure if my background in yoga and strength training affected my experience, but this was really easy for me. I thought that I needed a beginner's Pilates class because I've never done this before, but I was fairly shocked that none of the moves were hard for me. What are some more advanced pilates videos that you recommend?

Yoga does compliment Pilates very well. You can always try the level 2 classic Pilates class on this channel or some of the other classes.

Hi, thank you for this class. It is suited for beginners, and a nice pace for learning. I felt an uncomfortable tension on my neck, with the exercises at the beginning. any tips how I can improve that?

I'm glad that you enjoyed the class. Hundred can be a challenging exercise. I would suggest doing reverse abs in lieu of this exercise.

Beth could I do this one same class several days running or do recovery ones in between?. I've been doing some level 2 classes but need to recover next day. Wondered if it might advance my fitness/strength if I just repeated this class. I'm nearly 65...very flexible but still not as strong as I want to be

Before I got sick, I was at the advance level. I felt my muscles were really tight. I need a class that gives more stretching before it gets into the exercises.

Excellent cues, easy to follow - this was perfect for me! ❤ I’m recovering from foot surgery so I’m missing my Reformer class. I can’t put much weight on my foot yet so this was an ideal workout for me. I still can’t get down on the floor so I did the whole thing on my bed. 😂 Thank you so much!

My wife and I have been enjoying our first pilates experience with this class - what a great experience, we're feeling stronger and more flexible with each session. I think we must have done it 20 times over the last 2 months. Thank you Beth! P.S. Do you have any office chair substitutes that you find are good for the body? Rotating between a standing desk & exercise ball seems to be a popular combination? Any thoughts are appreciated :)

Why is it geared toward women? I'm an old man (86) who was a professional dancer and I need to strengthen my back and legs after a fusion and laminectomy.

I've been wanting to start a Pilates practice but it's been tough since being home with my newborn. I tried your class today and I thought it was effective, approachable and motivating!! I'm subscribing now for more... excellent video!!

Loved doing this class today after a few weeks. Couldn't believe it but I managed to do and whole class with ease and stability. My core must be getting stronger. Thanks Beth I love the way you teach 🤗😊

I’ve never personally believed in RU-vid classes. But this one definitely was a back and pelvis healer. I recommend it 100% 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

First time for a Pilates video. I had a hard time knowing when I was to breath in and when I was to breath out. A little more description with each exercise would be helpful, versus just breath in, now breath out. Thank you for this video, overall I enjoyed it.

Thanks for moving with me and leaving a comment. If you liked the class, try a few more on this channel. Depending on the class, sometimes I focus more on breathing and other times more on the exercise itself. I've also found that enjoying the class and continuing to come back to the mat is really helpful. First time with a new teacher and a Pilates video, there is always a lot going on.
