It's clear to me Matt, that you have a long career of wood working ahead of you. Very good lighting, explanation of process and reasons why, clear video, no jerky camera motion and easily understood. WELL DONE!! Many Thanks
Looks great. Dark paint really makes the pine top stand out. I may be in the minority but I think pine can look as good as oak or maple when done right. You hit the nail on the head here.
Looks great! Nice proportions on the box, the inset details, and the trim. The contrasting natural finish on the top with the painted lower looks great as well. Well done sir!
Really love your woodworking skills. Your a pro, thk u for sharing your work. I'm a beginner and your someone I love , watching your video, and how organized you are. Your really good at what you do.. I consider u my mentor in woodworking.
I like the contrast between the color and the wood. Usually it's a light wood with dark paint or vice versa. But it's nice to see something different every so often.
Nice build dude! I personally would have added hinges (and will when I build mine) but it's absolutely a personal preference. You just got yourself another subscriber. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel!
Thank you! The little bit of advice about consistency is a lesson I think too few WoodTubers mention but is so critical. Do I care if the fixed shelves in my bookshelf are EXACTLY 24 inches long? Nope...but if they aren't all the SAME I'm going to struggle to get the case square and not be pear shaped.
Awesome blanket chest really like all the details with the moldings and the router work on the top it came out fantastic. Also wanted to say I like how you explain your thought process like when breaking down sheet goods and how to cut trim pieces it's great information. Also good to know I'm not the only one doing it this way. Take care and keep up the awesome work!!
Another seemingly Flawless project! I didn't realize until this video that you're working in a one car garage?! Very nice. I need to utilize the space in my 1 car garage outbuilding/woodshop/thing.
Looks great Matt. I love how such a simple box can look so classy with some trim and the contrast of the painted cabinet and wood top really looks classy!
Wow Matt, another winner! What a great video and your craftsmanship and attention to detail continue to amaze me. Another thing that I have to give a shout-out to is the camerawork and editing. Whoever is filming does a great job. Whether it be far back shots of your shop with you working, or a super close-up of a board getting cut, it always looks very professional. The editing and transitions from shot to shot are great as well. I always feel like I'm watching a documentary on Discovery or something! Anyways keep up the awesome work. I'm finding that out of all the channels on youtube that I subscribe to, yours is one of them that I look forward to watching the most.
+Mista C Thank you very much! I'm not sure I deserve all that credit but thank you. I am constantly working at the camera and editing side of things, it's not something that comes natural to me so I'm constantly trying to improve.
Great Job & video! I don't know the "why's" of the lift off top but it would seem to me to be a pain trying to lift off the top, then once to have it off...what do you do with it? A female would have problems with that plus it could get dinged a lot.
Great job, never thought of a lift off top. This was the first time to view one of your videos, I like the way you comment over the steps, it just seems to help follow along.
That’s a very nice chest, Matt. I like the contrast of the natural grain in the lid with the solid colour in the body. And you’re very good at editing so that - with your calm narration - the process becomes very clear. Thanks for sharing!
+Wes Hamstra (Wes Hamstra Woodworking) Thanks Wes, I definitely need to get myself a spray setup at home. It's not always convenient to take things to work and spray them.
First time I see your channel and I must say this is without a doubt one of the best done videos on RU-vid. It's nice not to hear a bunch of annoying background music. You are a true Craftsman. I'm a big fan already
Matt, I noticed some exposed pocket holes on the ends... What method did you used to fill them. They certainly have disappeared in the final product, which by the way looks GREAT! My daughter already wants one.
+Buck Slaughter I did actually consider that, but in the end I'm happy with it all being one color. Plus, if I move it to another room or not against the wall, it might not look as good.
+Craig Pereira It's a little heavy but not too bad because I used a thinner ply. I wanted it to be somewhat heavy and sturdy though because of what it would be used for.
Matt, Nice work!!! Im on the fence about a table saw. In your opinion, do you think you would be as successful in this build if you used your MFT table and track saw only.
+dlindesey I absolutely love the mft for cross cutting, especially when it comes to sheet goods and breaking them down. The track saw and mft combo are great for small shops like myself. I do however think I'd sorely miss having my table saw for rip cuts. The main benefit of a table saw with a good fence is consistently ripping your boards. It would be hard to do with a track saw, especially thin rips.
+Pat M I just wanted a very simple way to attach the lid, it won't really be opened all that much. I don't currently have a spray setup at home and it's not always convenient for me to take stuff to work and spray it.
Hi Mat I saw that you used 2 types of respirators in this build the one with white filters & one with pink filters. Could you tell me when & why you use each one
awesome video. Just curious as to why your so meticulous with the long strokes for the polyurethane and then you go short and choppy and sideways brush strokes with the color? To you like the brush texture?
+Spencer/Tressa Adams I don't really mind brush strokes on a piece like this. The latex color isn't really self leveling like the poly is on the top. I also don't wanna take away from the look of the rails and stiles so that's why I brush each piece on the box from end to end. This way it doesn't end up looking like one big solid mass produced panel, if that makes sense.
Matt, seeing you rip the board 8:35 with your bandsaw in this video (not sure if that would be considered resawing) and then run it through the planer made me want to ask this question. When using stock that is thicker than you need and within the capability of your bandsaw, at what thickness do you resaw to remove the bulk material first? I was thinking that 1/4" may be enough to justify a pass on the bandsaw. I recently built and end table from some rough poplar I milled to 5/4. It took quite a while to get my stock down to 3/4", but I did have a nice pile of shavings for my trouble. My bandsaw is really bad and I am contemplating a bandsaw upgrade to make thinning stock less time consuming. Understanding the time savings afforded by resawing may help me justify a nicer bandsaw.
+Makercise Yeah, I'd say any size of material you deem worthy of saving is a good reason to resaw. That's exactly why I did it in this case. Instead of having to mill two strips down from three quarters, I could just resaw it in half and then plane it and then I have plenty of material to do what I need. Resawing is very handy in cases like this and like what you said, preventing having to plane down and lose all that material.
You’re very talented. Keep up the good work. Have you ever used a product called floetrol when you hand paint your projects? It’s an additive for latex or oil based paint that helps level and extend drying to to minimize brush marks, I don’t paint anything with out it. Also on your miter saw, what are the benefits of the jig you had? Just earned a subscriber!
+Mark Melton I haven't used it yet, but I've heard good things about it. I assume your talking about the zero clearance fence? It's just a way to give yourself a nice positive stop reference point when making miter cuts. By using the kerf cut that the blade makes in the sacrificial fence I have a reference to line up all my cuts, it just helps with accuracy and cleanliness on your cuts. Hope that wasn't too confusing lol.
+Jamie English My only real complaint and it's a minor one, is the dust collection isn't as good as I'd like. I actually have a review coming out on my saw in the next few days on my second channel.
Love it! Think i will make a white one with dark stained top. In Norway hardwood isn't that easy to come by, but do you think I can use spruce or pine?
Great looking box Matt. I've built a one similar recently - painted box, varnished top. I sprayed all of mine. Can I ask why you didn't, seeing as you are such professional spray man?
+Bicycle Rider Thanks I was really pleased with the top. I love the fact that the water based poly kept the wood bright looking instead of yellowed like most oil finishes do.
