My four old son and I watched both parts of this video. He liked it a lot. After we were done he asked me if we could visit your house and watch you work. I told him you probably didn't live in West Virginia. "Your right dad. Jon probably lives in another world..." I'm subscribing to this channel right now!

Very handsome chest! .... I was talking about the box, Jon. LOL ;-) Seriously, it looks great. Appreciate how you demonstrated making the trim. That step, while not difficult, is often glossed over or not shown. For many, it is intimidating, or at least thought of as complicated. You did a great job of removing the "mystery" and making far more approachable.

Hey John. Just wanted to let you know that Im currently building 2 of these chests. I changed the measurements a tad bit so that I could get all the box material out of one sheet of plywood with little more than saw dust left over :) This has been a lot of fun to build and quite easy. Thanks so much.

Great job Jon. I'm half way through a copy of it for my Grandson. I'll send a pic when it's done. You seem to breeze through deciding on proportions. I've been in the trade all my life and still struggle with it, even when I do a drawing. Although I work in Metric (in the UK), I was brought up with Imperial (Standard to you). So I used Imperial measurements to be sure I got everything exactly as yours. It's looking good.

Solid Drew he had to take the top off to paint the box. I do this with brass screws because they are soft. When the box is complete you use the brass screws and they are not messed up. It gives you a nicer finished product.

it's a great looking box.....I do wonder how well the poplar will hold up to daily abuses though; would it be better served to use a hardwood if you have it available, for more durability? (I realize you were using up leftovers,etc...)

well i come up with another question and may have found my missing ling here , could it be that the side frame with 4 1/4 go toward the back as theirs no face frame for the back and its to make up the difference in thickness? to me it would make sense but i'm just a beginner here that's why i was asking. PS: and if it turns out only have as good as yours it will be still great , thanks Jon love your work..Mel

Hi Jon , just love this blanket chest , mine is going to be same measurement but inside finish with red western cedar for a cedar chest , but i have a question and i need some clarity to where i'm confused. on your drawing cut list the end frame one vertical board calls for 4- 1/4 X 10- 3/4 but the left side on the drawing is 3-1/4 X 10- 1/4' . My question is "are they both 3 - 1/4 or should they be both 4-1/4 ?. Im sure theres a reason but im missing it , thanks PS" But i love this chest. Mel

Jon - I noticed you didn't use any band molding on the back of the lid. Is this because of of strength? perhaps the band molding will rip out due to the opening and closing of the lid? Dave.

Hi John, 2 quick questions... 1. The last strip of poplar you installed on the top at the rear where the hinges are attached...will MDF be strong enough for the hinges? Or should it be poplar? 2. Is it ok to router the perimeter of the plywood top instead of adding routered poplar strips? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Love your vids.
