Did you already listen to the new album from Porcupine Tree (CLOSURE / CONTINUATION)? You should! I think you should react on the song Harridan, if I need to pick one from that album. Gavin plays beyond belief.
Recently saw a documentary on Porcupine Tree and just days before the band was about to go into the studio to record their first "big" album (i.e. they had a budget and big label support) the band lead Steven Wilson fired the drummer. He had no replacement and thought it was all going to fall apart but the keyboardist said "I know this fellow I played with a couple of times, he's pretty good. Want me to give him a call?" It was Gavin Harrison. Can you imagine that you're desperate and the only drummer you can find is Gavin Harrison?
No shit huh? I was just contemplating what vetting process Steven went through to lock him in as a drummer, long term. Sometimes it's all who you know.
Gavin is not just a drummer, he is elite drummer. His virtuosity, feeling of the song, rhythm, and drums as an instrument above the chart. He is a sort of Van Gough of the drums art. His presence in any band says a lot of a band itself: PT, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief, 05Ric - they all amazing bands. Drummers like GH are priceless.
An inspiration for this song was the story of two Wisconsin girls who apparently killed themselves in a suicide pact. Arielle Daniel, 17, and Heather Bates, 14, were struck by an Amtrak train on November 12, 2005 in what was ruled a suicide, but was possibly an accident. Daniel was a huge Porcupine Tree fan and created the band's MySpace page - it was reported that she was listening to Porcupine Tree on her iPod when she died. "She also became a part of that song," Wilson told us. "The idea was very disturbing to me, that there were young people that would seek escape through such brutal, This, like so many of Wilsons material, is a horrorstory tied to reality.

Love this track, and this entire concert. Thanks for backing up after the second stop to regain the flow into the chorus there. I'm always impressed that the band retains such rock-solid time in that outro section where Gavin is really playing around with the meter. I *think* they have a click given that their visuals are closely synchronized with the music.
1st chuckle - "Mansplaining", 2nd chuckle - "7 minutes 55, that's a long one". Like many my age, I fell in love with the drums in the 1980s because of Neil Peart. I discovered Gavin Harrison a little more than a year ago and he has changed the way I listen to the instrument. Precision, musicality, timing, pocket, groove and restraint... those are now my measuring sticks. I heard Gavin say in an interview once that there will always be someone who can play faster. I can't remember his exact words but he was talking about serving the music. That is my favorite thing about Gavin Harrison, nothing ever seems out of place, it's never about him... I don't believe he even likes drum solos. It's always all about the song. For me, he creates a delightful tension in the music the keeps you comfortably on the edge of your seat. Does that make sense? The two biggest compliments I can pay him are 1) I never imagine anyone else playing his drum parts (although there are some good covers out there), and 2) he was apparently one of the aforementioned Neil Peart's favorite drummers.
Neil Pert wrote a long (and generous) forward to Gavins book "Rhythmic Illusions". He had a deep admiration for Gavins approach to the drums. He said something along the lines of "If I could play that way, that is the way I would play." Truly remarkable. Gavins approach and philosophy towards music could benefit any musician, no matter the instrument. As a side note, I'm going to meet him and watch him play two nights next weekend.. I'll be a kid in a candy store :)
@@meters_and_madness As usual, I know half of the story. I knew it was cool that Neil was a admirer but the whole story is about a thousand times cooler. I am not a musician, just a lover of the drums. Could I possibly get anything out of that book?
@@timhilton7254 As an admirer, but non-player of the drums, I couldn't say how much you would get out of the books. They are deep dives into advanced exercises in metric modulations, displacements, overrides, odd subdivisions, etc.. I would recommend more his DVD's (Rhythmic Horizons and Rhythmic Visions) where he demonstrates concepts from the books, but also has tons of improv and showcasing the ideas in a musical context. There is also a Book / DVD combo called "Rhythmic Designs" that you might appreciate. It is a breakdown and explanation of every song from his albums with 05ric, which contains some of the most creative, interesting, and musical drum parts I have ever heard.

Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief (PT and PT :D) are the most luckiest bands on the planet because they have Gavin Harrison.
And here I thought you'd done this one already.... This track, this entire gig, is everything about what makes Gavin Harrison, and Porcupine Tree, so utterly amazing. The variations in pitch and tone and timing and flair and subtlety that flow through this tune are mesmerising. So glad you've finally gotten to experience this...now go listen again. And again. It just keeps getting better! 🤘
Now look what you've done ! I've heard of them but never listened to them. Just ordered the cd of this album .. Heck they've got 10 albums to get through!! And yes I did say cd ,Im old !! Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
I am so jealous that you have so much brand new awesomeness to get into. It really doesn’t get any better than Porcupine Tree. They have redefined musical standards for me!
@@robertnshine I heard Floyd , Marillion even Talk talk in this song . That's a good thing to me. I like the fact they have feeling ... there are lots of newer prog groups around that have great technical ability and virtuosity bit no soul . I'm looking forward to delving into new territory .. Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
@@springy-2112 I’ve been stuck down the Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson rabbit hole for a couple of years now. They have a fantastic back catalogue. You have to check out Steven Wilson’s (lead singer/guitar) personal output too. Can particularly recommend the albums ‘Hand. Cannot. Erase.’ & ‘The Raven That Refused To Sing’. I have tickets to see PT at Wembley in November. They’ve just reformed after a 10 year hiatus and the Wembley gig could be their very last ever. I’m 55 years old and have never looked forward to a gig so much in my entire life!!!
@@robertnshine Ha , I am 55 also and need new music .. all my favourite bands have either retired , gone weird , died or have no original members but still tour !! .. 👍🏻😀
Just love it, Gavin is just my religion when we talk about drums hahaha. But I'm waiting for your reaction to "Bonnie The Cat" from Gavin, is just mindblowing. Tks Andrew for the video!
I've been a fan of Gavin for nearly 20 years. I was able to meet him and see him live for the first time around a month ago. I literally started crying from joy and disbelief while watching him play. The last time I felt like that was 12 years ago when I saw Buckethead live in Alabama.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I’m sure it will be! I only got into Porcupine Tree after they split up. So excited to be seeing them in December. Seen Pineapple Thief a bunch of times though and have a used (and signed) Gavin snare head on the wall of my studio.
Oh my g.. you find new levels of extravagant comedy... ;-) (but it was funny) =) Good video - the level of control in the first bars of drumming - wow!
I love the tone of the drums in this mix. Just the right amount of pop and bruh taht sequence hes doing at like 10:38 - dude is like a death metal drummer
Since you are also a fan of Gavin Harrison: There's a new video of the Porcupine Tree song "Harridan" on RU-vid. It's taken from the new live DVD. Take a look at it. 😊
This album was my go-to during the "angsty emo high school phase" One of those times where you don't realize the intellect/maturity of Gavin's playing (or Wilson's songwriting) until quite a few years later.
Hi Andrew, I love listening to Gavin too and I'll add something to your description of his playing, he has swing. Proper, old fashioned swing, it doesn't matter what he's playing there's always swing in there. Ginger Baker would have approved.
He maxed out at the end with those off-time polyrhythms. And well he should max out with that type of exit from the world of experience into the world of perfect forms.
Hey Andrew! I don't know if anyone suggested it yet, but you absolutley should check Troy Wright playing Animals as Leaders 'Physical Education'. You won't regret a single bit of it, I promise!
This is the best I have ever heard from a drummer. The band itself was in rarified air with this song. Timing was incrediable. Execution was just totally brutal. The video was awesome as well, capturing the audience reactions. The ending with the special effects train steam sound was perfect.
"Is it overplaying or under-executing?" Andrew, that is honestly a profound and thought-provoking question. I'm going to keep it in mind for my own playing. But I don't think it pertains to Gavin Harrison; he seems capable of executing at such a high level that even his mistakes would be musical.
Just saw him with The Pineapple Thief in Cleveland,Ohio last week in a very intimate setting at the House of Blues. Gavin was on his game as always and looking forward to seeing him again in September in Washington,D.C. and hearing the new album and the old tunes. Yeehaw!
Harrison is somewhat overrated, IMO. I find his very technical approach a bit boring and sterile. Which is strange, since he seems to be very relaxed and upbeat in person.
If you're looking for more Gavin in the future I'd heartily suggest his playthrough of White Mist by Pineapple Theif or Indiscipline by King Crimson for the TRIPLE drummer experience. King Crimson are known to be blockers though, which is a shame.
I don't think you've covered Nicholas Barker on the channel, but I haven't double-checked. He's a legendary Metal drummer. He has drummed for Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Brujeria, and others. His most impressive work in my opinion is his drumming on the 2001 and 2003 albums from Dimmu Borgir, but there aren't many good drum cam videos of him (to my knowledge). His speed, precision and fills are incredible. Songs I suggest are "Indoctrination" by Dimmu Borgir", and "For the World to Dictate Our Death" by Dimmu Borgir.
I'll never accuse anyone of overplaying as long as a few elements are at play. In no particular order...does it fit the song, does it accompany the other band/group member's abilities and, & I'm sure there's other points, can the drummer actually play what/how they're attempting to. Wonderful group & great reaction video! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼
Albeit the incredible drumming by Gavin, please take a moment to appreciate the amazing song writing abilities by Steven Wilson. This song like many others by him is pure gold.
Andrew, great reaction as always. Gavin is truly the GOAT (at least for me). May I ask you, when you have the time & interest, to have a look at another PT song "What Happens Now" (LIVE) from the same 2008 Tilburg concert. I believe you will be completely amazed even further how insanely talented this band is.
Glad you stopped to point out the "Pocket". My number 1 requirement of a drummer that I play with is pocket and feel (add listening to that). Gavin's dynamics and groove are at the highest level. Plus chops galore and such clean attack makes everything he does a clinic and most importantly is done in service to the song. Love your reactions and break downs.
Over the last 20 years. Everything Gavin touches turns to absolute gold. Porcupine Tree at the start was a great band but reached an entire new level of sound and dynamics when Gavin joined. Same was the case for Pineapple Thief in my opinion. The new album is also sounding great from what I've heard so far.. I can watch Porcupine Tree's live in Chicago DVD over and over and over. Such a phenomenal band and I have to say that I also love what Jon Wesley brought to band during those tours and also the background videos by Lasse Hoile.. All top notch. Cheers!!
There no words for Gavin… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kgwgtERCVI4.htmlsi=LyrIJQzRG3j0Nw8P this is the same show i guess. One of the best PT song, you’re gonna love this :) Keep choppin woods 🤘🏻
Hi, there is something wrong with the sound of the track. Gets less louder and then back loud again, could you check this? Its too bad to not hear that song as it was recorded and I love your reaction videos
LOL. People have said that before. I do have a degree in music so not difficult to feel where the transitions are coming. Especially as they crescendo into them.... Pretty obvious. First time listen Andrew. You'll see me mention on other videos when I have heard the requested song before. Out of curiosity... What do you think I'd gain from pretending to hear this for the first time? It's a bizarre concept to me
Mark the coffee guy must be from my neck of the woods since Community Coffee is roasted & packaged right up the road from me, here in Louisiana. If so, then...Bonjour, neighbor! Community Coffee is definitely the best, and I bring a bag with me every time I travel anywhere that it is not available.
i am originally from Ohio. was working out of HubCity Lafayette LA in the early 90’s and got addicted to the TradDarkRoast . I moved back to Ohio after the 1st Gulf War ended and tanked drilling in the GOM. Thanks to the interwebs , I don’t have to send my LA friends money to get my CC fix
Always a treasure to find a Porcupine Tree I didn’t knew before. Going to see the Master(s) in October. Already the best show this year. Keep on Rocking Andrew \m/
Have been at the concert ( about a week ago ). Had a greet spot where I could see Gavin playing ( no screens ). They played a good 2,5 hours wich you dont see a lot these days. Was amazing to see him play. The ghost notes, the little bells, backbeat all of it.Thanks for teaching this guitar guy a thing or 2 on drumming Andrew.
