Casein plastic is superior to plastic from oil in providing an oxygen barrier.
Cost is merely a penny, and you don't need a refinery to make it!
I show you how to mix it up, spread it out evenly using a simple spin.
In my next video, I am going to make a Face Shield, and a Face Mask insert using what I have made here, and I will release that in part 2.
The formula I settled on is:
200mL Cleaning Ammonia
20gr Casein powder
4 mL Glycerine.
The construct:
Off the shelf ceramic heater (300/600 W) with cowling removed, remounted and rewired to a center switch bank. It is wired in series with the microwave motor so that the motor must be turning before energizing the heater.
The microwave motor is 4W/120VAC reversing asymmetric magnet.
Switches and wiring are rated to 20A.
Fusible Link is rated at 20A.
Everything is mounted on a metal frame, encasing in metal and PTFE sheeting.
Everything is bolted to a 1X12 about 1 meter long.
The pink paint is milk paint I painted in a video. Check here: • Arts and Crafts: Tradi...

very interesting, now what do you thinking of ironing a few together? would you be able to seal them together? will the final product be able to be melted down and applied in a way to make long sheets?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 года назад
Great questions. I do plan on ironing a few together, at the seams. They do seal, set to Wool (protein). You will see that in part 2. I have not tried to melt them, which they will do, I'll give it a go and report back. I have considered how to make a continuous sheet for a roll. My best guess would be a long belt, which I may try.

I'm doing a school project on casein plastic as a meat tray alternative. knowing how this the standard meat trays are do you think casein plastic will be too brittle to be any use at all?

Great video! do you know about an organic additive that will make the bioplastic more UV resistant?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable Год назад
I love your question as it gives me a chance to explain the difference between 'old thinking' and the new (much older) way things need to be done. Our ancestors put everything that need long term storage in glass or metal. And we need to return to that. Then we got 'creative' and started using plastic for everything possible. Those days should move on into ancient history too. New thinking says we don't want our waste to 'hang around' so we never add UV protection. The focus of my channel is to show how to replace one use plastics. There are some things that should be made from LPG plastic, if we would only do it responsibly.

@@GEOsustainable thank you for your answer. I understand and agree with your approach to single-use plastics in the privet sector. but if we are looking to make a change in the industrial sectors as well, we will need plastics that are biodegradable but also durable since not every application can be addressed to with glass or metal. a perfect example would be the agriculture industry (that I work in) which is one of the largest consumers of single-use plastics. of course that this is only my personal point of view (:

Thank you so much for watching my videos. I love helping folks solve problems; the life of an engineer. I thought about doing something with cornstarch, but it has been done a lot by others and I can't add much to what they have done. So, I am open to any ideas you may have. Please don't click reply, as I don't get notified. Start a new comment so I get alerted. Thanks again for watching!

@@GEOsustainable From your garden's potatoes ^^ ? From industry residues ? Malt from brewery ? I'm on my own experimenting from fermented grass. Permanent pastures are better CO² traps and humus producers than forest (everytime the outside part is eaten or mowed, the related roots dies and feeds the soil ! Renewable, disposed as trash, growing simply with sun, and a bit of water able to clean "dirty waters" (i thanks it with my pee ; ) Not (yet) for transparent uses, but to mold blocks ...

Oh yes. Most surely. You can make it hard enough to be a hammer. I show you how here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ToS1vTselII.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8nQyPLZcHLw.html

Is there an easier way to do this to make it at home? Since I’m a student I don’t have a lot of these items
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 3 года назад
I am sure you can do it at home. The chemistry needs to mix 24 hours and until all lumps are gone. If mixing is impossible, you can let it sit for a few days, or until the Casein is completely dissolved. Keep it covered while you wait, the ammonia is very strong and it should not be allowed to dry out.

Looks good but how water proof is it?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 года назад
Great question. Not even waterproof, as soon as water hits it, it will turn white and weaken, but will return to normal once it dries. If you want it waterproof, spray a coat of Shellac.
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 года назад
@Rotten Brainz Yes, I use tannin, wine or tea, but it enhances the amber color. I will be trying pectin soon, as I have read it works. I hope to bring this to you soon in a video. The trick is, if the acid is too strong, it turns into Galalith. For now, to avoid all that, I use the Shellac (secretion of the female Lac bug). All good stuff Rotten!

Is it heat or microwave safe?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 3 года назад
Yes and no. It will become very brittle in a microwave. So, it would be a truly one use if used for food. It will not soften, it is a thermoset plastic with this chemistry. It will turn white if there is a lot of moisture.

I have read in Science Daily . com dated January 21, 2021, using as source the University of New South Wales, that though "ammonia has sustained humanity since the early 20th century, [but] its production leaves a huge carbon footprint. Now researchers have found a way to make it 100 per cent renewable." Is the ammonia used to illustrate this super interesting video 100 % renewable...? If the emphasis here (I always follow your postings...!) is to be Geo Sustainable how can we be testing ammonia...?!
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 3 года назад
Well, you have a point. I do not know where my household ammonia comes from. I do know ammonia is found in nature and therefore, renewable. I do know most ammonia comes from cattle urine, so the carbon footprint they speak of are likely cow farts. I honestly do not know about the 'new research', ammonia has pretty much always come from cow urine. You could synthesize ammonia from the methane in a cow fart, but why would you...just wait for the stream. Tarnation, those cow farts are useful it seems :)
