Clearing DBD's Biggest Lore Misconceptions! 

Have you heard any of there lore facts before? Well, they are fanmade! Do you know any more of them?

Adding to the "survivors could beat some killers up" the devs stated in the official blog that being a survivor inside the Entity's realm is like being inside a nightmare, when's the last time you could control your actions during a dream? The survivors simply can't to everithing they like, they lack complete free will, this is no lucid dream. If you dream of being chased by a killer, you can't simply fight back. This is also (possibly) the reason why the survivors don't notice a killer staring them down a few meters away in the campsite pre match.

Whenever someone mentions "Why survivors can't fight back" I remind them of that time a samurai entered the entity's realm with a sword, cut off the Oni's arm and the arm regenerated, until she, an experienced swordswoman realized that fighting was useless, the trial is a game, and the Entity its the one making the rules

Pyramid head is so complicated... but as a Silent Hill fan, I think the theory that makes the most sense is that he is not bound by the entity. More so he chooses to be there similar to pinhead. His lore states that he makes an agreement, the agreement is (in my opinion) the entity giving him physical form instead of being a pure manifestation. Him splitting the grounds and breaking the trial rules COULD be him punishing the entity, but in all reality, it's just pyrmaid head slaughtering in the ways he sees fit.

the most frustrating part of the "pyramid head is stronger than the entity" theory (which is so often touted as fact) is that it doesn't even come from fans of the games, where pyramid head was a monster born solely of james sunderland's desire to be punished; the idea of pyramid head they espouse comes from the movie, which completely rewrote the monster and removed him from his original context for the sake of Using Cool Design For Cool Stuff.

I always assumed that killers like Pinhead, Pyramid Head, and maybe Myers are not directly controlled by the entity, but those killers play along with the entity's game for one reason or another. They are not forced to hunt and they could fight the entity or even leave the realm if they wanted, but they want to play the entity's game.

as a huge fan of the book, the Sadako in game is based on the movie. on top of this, Yoichi isn’t a character in the original book but was created specifically for the movie

The fact that most of these “misconceptions” I believed was from mintskull himself is kinda funny

The entity 100% buffs up the killers, a main plot point on the saw movies is that Amanda couldn't move a person on her own, which is how the cops knew there was a third person helping jigsaw. But in dbd, she picks up and carries people with one arm while they're actively resisting, while in the movies, it was shown that she was struggling to drag someone using both arms while the person was completely unconscious unable to resist in any way.

Pyramid Head being in the Entity’s realm make a little more sense now that James Sunderland is in the game

The only killer that has been confirmed to resist the entity was trapper himself. We can see hooks pierced into him in game and splash art of him fighting the entity.

Fun Fact, Sadako is 19 in the original novel and the film follows the novel pretty closely. Also, her movie character is portrayed by a 30 year old woman.

I don't think people can fight off The Legion irl. People saying, "I could beat them up, it's just a guy with a knife." I watched a video of a martial artist seeing if anyone could survive a person with a knife, so did a simulation with a fake knife/markers for just 3 minutes in a small room. Nobody survived, they fended them off for a few seconds, but they messed up a tiny bit if lost control of the knife, they would've been fatally injured. I do like MintSkull also points out how the entity gives killers super strength to kick pallets to shreds, damage huge generators by kicking, and pick up somebody effortlessly with one arm. It would be trying to fight a supersoldier from Halo with a knife, than just a person with a knife, so highly unlikely you would survive at all ( just like in the game). The only person I think could win is Chris, but only Chris from RE6. I think Chris in DBD is the RE version and if so odds are bad for Chris.

Since pyramid needs to hook twice to then do last judgment and denying a sacrifice you could say hes edging the entity 🧐

Nothing grinds my gears more than the “Entity fears Myers” theory, such a ludicrous take. There no way in hell that a eldritch deity with space-time powers should be scared of some dude with a kitchen knife and an overrated title.

Thank you soooo much for correcting the record on my girl Yun-Jin. The OG lore was just vague and people ran way too far with it.

The thing with Nurse is that a lot of old lores were very ambiguous and left a room for interpretation. They didn't lay character's whole biography bare in all important details that are very clearly interpreted, but simply gave a brief story that generally touched the main points that established what these characters were. We knew very little and had to base our perception of the characters on indirect clues like their behaviour. In case of Nurse, her lore doesn't explicitly say why she did that. It doesn't say she thinks of the patients as "garbage in the humankind genepool" or whatever borderline nazi nonsense devs wrote in her tome lore, but that she simply endured the insanity in Asylum for so long, she turned insane herself, getting obsessed with "purification" idea which could go both ways. Her mori was a hint towards the more grey and interesting interpretation - she helped the patients in her own twisted way because she was no longer sound herself. Devs, however, decided to establish another interpretation as canon, adding details that she was a person who was torturing the patients, treated them like trash and overall thought of them as biogarbage that she eventually dealt with. It's boring, over the top, one dimensional and petty, considering that BHVR knew damn well how community treats Nurse. So nobody really thinks that Nurse is still the Angel of Death kind of character, devs ruined any chances for that interpretation by their lore. That doesn't mean this version wasn't valid before that. People who insist on that right now (including me) simply consider her tome to be an anti climatic and bad development of the character. Same thing as with the Hag's lore that not only basically borderline retcon`ed most of her original lore, but also did it in such a poor and cheesy way that completely disregarding and dismissing that piece of official lore is perfectly understandable approach due to how actually horrible and disrespectful it is to the character. "Don't worry, grandma, i won't turn into a swamp monster".

While the pyramid head thing is mostly fanon, you neglected to mention his trails which he carves in the ground with his great knife, which almost look like open wounds, since the realms are created by and are in a way physical manifestations of the entity. Also the reason for the fanon around myers, PH and nurse is because these ideas make them more intersting characters than in their base lore, and their exetreme vaguery only makes fanon easier to come to terms with.

My headcanon for why Pyramid Head is allowed an alternative way to sacrifice/kill is because the act of tormenting a survivor causes them to generate more emotions for the entity to feed off of, while affected by torment, they're literally mentally tormented by their own fears, traumas, etc.

Thank you for correcting the Huntress thing. I'm very tired of people thinking that Huntress has the mind of a child, she most certainly does not.

One little "erm actually 🤓" from me is Deathslinger's lore says his first attempt with his... uh... firearm killed the person he was supposed to catch. He then modified it and even before entering the realm was impaling people without killing them, just wounding & trapping them enough they couldn't get away.

12:30 I always assumed that everything that wasn't brought in from another world was part of the entity therefore it would always be controlled by the entity, so if survivors tried to hit a killer with a hatchet it would probably crumble to dust or maybe the hatchet wouldn't even be able to be taken from the locker by survivors being unliftable like Mjolnir.

I dont agree with that interpriation of the huntress. I feel like while she isnt stupid, her mother tought her to survive at a very young age and she has been hunting all her life. She clearly has a very strong understanding of how to kill and survive, but her soical skills and abilty to connect with others are on the level of a child. keep in mind she has never interacted with other humans past her mother, and see them as nothing more than larger smarter prey. While she may be very good at killing and surviving, she is not good at understanding other people or soicity as a whole, which is why people say she "has the mind of a child" i think its just a misunderstanding of what that actually means, as it is a pretty ambigus statement. great video tho i love to watch you!

if it comes to killing the devs confirmed in the same live stream that they confirmed the thing about bloodpoints that kills not only feed the entity too but the first trails probably didn't even had hooks. Also I am very happy that someone actually mentioned the ph's power description because I never see people say anything about it. I like to think Entity probably cautious with Pinhead because it allows him to take them from the realm so he can torture them because Pinhead has Leviathan to back him up

I dont know if spending two decades in a well, as a corpse, counts as being over the age of consent... But if it helps, I'm pretty sure the actress was in her twenties when she played the character, and no kid is having bags that massive under their eyes.

I think the Myers one came more from the fact that Tombstoning all 4 survivors used to get you an Entity displeased. Why would the Entity allow Michael to tombstone everyone if it doesn't want him to do that? Maybe it's because he's stronger than it and will do what he wants regardless of the Entity. I'm not saying it's correct, it's just a possible explanation for why people thought that. I do think that the Entity is clearly aware of how powerful the killers can be if Freddy's lore is anything to go by.

I find it much more interesting that Myers showed up unannounced to follow Laurie and was gladly accepted, but the biographies of them both are too vague to say anything either way. And we'll likely never get a tome clearing that up

with Susie, her presence in the Legion is complicated. The "first murder" (at Joey's workplace) seems to be very interesting in terms of lore, as Susie's hesitance is directly countered by the description of the Sparkling Knife, which states she stabbed a man in the back twice and left him to bleed out (wanting to impress Frank), so her hesitance is... odd. I think Legion, Susie in particular, suffers from conflicting lore with new additions. Initially Susie seemed like she was being manipulated, but then it was clear she wasn't with Soldiers Of Mayhem and some cosmetics, and was seemingly doing so to impress Frank... But then the comics contradict this by suggesting that she's in love with Julie which would make her desire to impress Frank be... meaningless? Whether Susie and Joey were manipulated, and the reason for their actions, genuinely depends on which parts of the lore you consider. Its so confusing

I always assumed the survivors didn't fight back because if they did the entity would have that violence consume them. IE once you start fighting you'll become a killer too. There was an old bit of lore that implied this as well but I forgot were it is

Minor correction about Yoichi Asakawa; he was not in the original trilogy of novels at all. Even the Japanese film took quite a few liberties from the novel. The protagonist, Kazuyuki Asakawa, was actually a man in the novels, and he had a wife and very young daughter. Both his wife and daughter died between the events of the first and second novel. However, that does mean DBD's particular version of Yoichi is indeed unique to the game. Also, Sadako did actually die well before the events of the first novel/film (whether DBD took its own liberties and claimed she was still alive or that it was actually meant to be her "ghost", I'm not sure), but she was actually an adult before her death, so that part is still correct. Thank you for including that fact in the video though; being a fan of the novels and the first film, it is honestly a little grating to always hear everyone treat the US adaptation and the original Japanese versions as the same, or to always call Sadako a "little girl". As someone who is more familiar with the source material, I can tell you the Sadako in DBD is far more based on the film rather than the novels. Sorry, that was my nerd emoji moment. sadako is based on the japanese movie, yoichi and reiko are not even characters in the book.

The huntress still has the mind of a child, thats just the most logical conclusion. She wasnt taught past a young age, and hasnt interacted with society, missing her learning at the critical stage of development. Her mind is therefore similar to people this happened to in real life, which is basically a child's mind

Lore accurate only, Leon or Chris could 1v1 most killers in the game

You yourself fell into a misconception Im afraid. The Janitor was first kill for the Legion. But that is not to say that they didn´t cause any serious injuries before that. Even tome lore implies that Joey and Susie had no issues with causing serious injuries, but no deaths. Those two cosmetics are very vague and caused many people to fall into the wrong narration that Legion was killing before the store incident. They were not, because if they would, then it would literally destroy the entire plot of a turning point of the Legion and Entity´s intervention in Frank´s mind in that store.

Another thing about Myers, he was taken some time after the original movie, but way before Halloween 4, which was the movie establishing Myers’ immortality as the embodiment of evil, meaning that the in-game Myers is not the immortal version that is In Halloween 4 and beyond so everyone’s claims that Myers could beat every non-supernatural killer in the game because he’s immortal doesn’t fit

With the Susie and Joey one I don't think the cosmetics are completely canon. I've always taken cosmetics as alternate universe versions of the characters since I'm pretty sure a lot of cosmetic lore would contradict each other.

I know it’s not what was intended but it’s really good and fits Plus I think the blood points argument is really dumb, like if this theory ever intended or changed to be intended should the developers just not give Pyr head players bloodpoints?? Just to clarify, Pyramid Head doesn't have to hook survivors to mori them. Caging them twice accomplishes the same thing.

I believe the explanation for why survivors can't beat up the killers is that... well... they can, and they do. The lore of the Blight makes it clear that survivors can fight back, and even kill the killers in a trial. And that, actually, the way we players experience the entity's realm is not entirely truthful to how is in 'cannon', and that just because we don't experience it in gameplay, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It is heavily implied that killers kill survivors accidentally all the time when trying to sacrifice them, and that most of the survivors would go down in just one hit. There is a clear separation between lore, storytelling, the cannonical, and gameplay mechanics; and never it is implied that the rules of gameplay mechanics govern how trials play out. And is implied, is that the trials and the killers are actually much more dangerous than, "they hook me I get out and just heal up"; and that the way things play out is much more in line with a more realistic setting of a horror movie.

Honestly I like the idea of when Pyramid Head entered the realm, the agreement they made was that in turn of Pyramid Head..not just leaving, the Entity would merge a little of it’s own powers with Pyramid Head’s and give that to him.

Lore wise the most powerful killer is obviously Pinhead. The worst he can do isn’t just blade wounds, you should pray he just kills you. But with his kill animation he can literally send survivors to Hell. He’s an extra dimensional angel/demon. He came to the entities realm of his own accord and he’s free to come and go as he pleases.

in addition to sadako not being samara, even if sadako 100% stopped aging when she was pushed into the well, she was stated to be 19 years old when she was raped and then killed (via aforementioned well shoving), so she is, at a minimum, 19 years old.

I don’t know if I want to prove some point by writing this, or just to make an observation, all killers who can kill survivors without using hooks and without perks/offerings to mori (Myers, PH, Pig and Sadako), all four of them still need some kind of input from the entity to kill. Sadako and Pig, while not requiring addons and hooks to kill, still need the trial altered by the entity (TVs for Sadako to build up condemn, and boxes for Pig (while boxes themselves used as a detriment to the killer, unlike trapper, who visibly picks up and carries around traps, entity just spawns a trap in pig’s hands when needed)). PH does not need any addons and any physical alterations to the trial (not counting cages, cause they are just hooks, put more fancy (and just a bit more dangerous)) still needs to go through the dance of hooking/caging survivors twice before the kill. And Myers does not need alterations to the trial and can skip hooks entirely, still needs one of two addons (which are created by the entity and found by the character outside the trials). Of course ALL killers can just slug survivors and make them bleed out, that gives 50 bp and really upsets the entity.

These “xx killer can overpower entity” theory are just ridiculous, a simple fact is that no matter what kind of killers are they, evil spirits, supernatural beings, super humans, incarnations or high priest of hell whatever, they will all get stunned by a simple wooden pallet, why? Because it was made by the entity

I feel like if we're really comparing, Sadako is one of the strongest Normally she cursed her victim with 7 days, But in the game she used 7 bars instead, As if she's holding back her power I feel like she can just mori all survivor immediately once the game loads in, But She's just holding back for... Reason Can be prove by her condemn thing where she doesn't even need to touch the survivor and they're already choking on the floor

I heard of the lore that the killer most likely to kill the Entity eventually, or who came the closest to killing the Entity in the past would be the Blight with his discovery of the Pustula flowers somehow. I haven’t unlocked that tome yet and read the lore so idk tho

While Nurse is evil, and I think the "angel of mercy" thing is not founded on anything real, I think it should be pointed out that she is the only killer that seems to have a desire to punish herself, too. It doesn't explicitly say so anywhere that I know of, but the Nurse is in a constant state of voluntary suffering...her power causes her searing pain, and she seems to choose to wear a bag on her head that her lore confirms makes it hard to breath. I think the Nurse views herself as part of the same "disease" she thinks she's cleansing.

I have my own personal theory regarding Pyramid Head, Silent Hill 2 and Dead By Daylight. Spoiler warning for SH2. In SH2, James Sunderland comes to Silent Hill, a place he vacationed with his late wife, after her death. She contracted an unexplainable illness, which caused him to go mad with grief, and take her life by suffocating her with a pillow. The monsters in SH2, including Pyramid Head, are Manifestations of his guilt and grief. But what if the reason her illness is unexplainable and incurable is because it was caused by the Entity? The entity has proven it can interfere with mortal life with the Artist after all. Of course this can’t be the original intention given Silent Hill came first, but think about it. Due to this illness the Entity was able take not just James Sunderland, who is overflowing with emotions the entity feeds off of, but also the manifestation of his guilt in Pyramid Head, as a new killer to hunt the survivors.

I hope that the survivor coming in the January mid chapter is Saku Nakano from the tomes. She came to the fog to kill Kazan Yamaoka and it would be very interesting to see her have voice lines when going against the oni

We can confidently say that Dead by Daylights Sadako is inspired by the Ringu movies and not the novels since Yoichi simply doesn't exist in them. Edit: nevermind, someone else commented that already

The “X survivor can defeat killers” is a valid argument, if survivors weren’t weakened by the Entity Chris/Cheryl/Jill/etc. would absolutely destroy some killers. However you switched the topic into “why can’t survivors fight back in entity’s realm” which the answer is obvious; the entity is the one making the rules

I like to think that Killer that COULD defeat The Entity is actually Pinhead. He came into the realm not by an invitation fof our eldrich spider, but because somehow someone in the realm opened a lament configuration. I think, he came to the box call, but decided to stay simply because Entity's realm is a GREAT source of pain and suffering, so Pinhead just decided to play along. As a proof I want to mention the fact that it HE who bring the box at the begining of every match. He himself give survivors a solution for his own abiblty. Unlike EMPs amd first aid sprays which spawns by the Entity. And also his mori is the only one, which left no body afterwards. I like to think that Pinhead bring survivors to his own Hell, showing them his sights, and bring it back to entity simply because of respect or smth. Like. "I played with your toys a little. Here, you can take it back"

One thing I will add about the Yun-Jin Lee discourse is that even if she told the police about Trickster, who would believe her? Her pop star coworker is an international serial killer, for real? She'd get locked in a damn loony bin. Korea's law enforcement is notoriously corrupt, they would not lift a finger to stop one of Korea's biggest cultural exports from flourishing.

I like to think of kills as a treat for both killers and the entity. Like it's not filling but very tasty, because each death brings great emotion. But who doesn't like a chocolate bar now and then? And I always lore wise pyramid head, the idea of it, was given to the entity, the pyramid we say is actually the entity conjuring it's perception of it into the realm. Like god ( in silent hill, the god, is THE GOD) being pestered by a little kid, the entity, and was like " here take this, have fun".

How about "The Legion all share a body" or however that went, definitly wasn't helped by that one promo image with Frank looking in the Mirror

Sadako didn't survive in the well for decades. She was 19 years old when she was thrown in that well and she died shortly after. However, due to being extremely powerful, her vengeful spirit remained, and only began enacting her revenge decades later.

4:00 See, this is something I don't think anyone brings up in relation to Spirit and Sadako. They're Onryō, not regular ghosts. They're Yokai, Japanese mythology attributes these spirits as more like unstoppable forces of nature deadset on revenge. These things can being famine, tsunami, earthquakes, plague, Insect swarms, accidents. Onryō are ridiculously powerful, Sadako sweeps all of the other killers except maybe Dredge, Pyramidhead, and Pinhead

Just FYI Myers being the embodiment of evil only became official in the later sequels but its not confirmed if thats the lore behaviour is actually going with. It seems more likely they're going with just the original movie or the new canon because Laurie isn't related to Myer's. In the original and new canon movies the "embodiment of evil" thing was just a turn of phrase by a psychiatrist
