And that is how an instructional tutorial is done... Very well done. You’re a fantastic teacher. Now I want to do that to my Vespa.

Thank you so much for the video. I have to replace a front cylinder and it was sandblasted to bare metal for the repair. Now I can paint my cylinder to match!!!🎉

You could also use Wax on the edges of the find and apply the paint. The paint would come of really easy

I think so! The thing is that the fans have rounded edges though. So to make sure you the tape stripe will stick nicely it's best to first sand them flat.

Best cooling is with Matt black, next satin and lastly gloss adding clear coat would further harm cooling and with modern fuels on these old engines that is a HUGE mistake.

I was considering painting my heads to match my blacked out S&S 129ci kit. I also purchase two Thunder Max Tuners. One of them is raw, and the other is black. Initially the company had black, then went to raw due to COVID-19 supply issues. Thunder Max discovered the raw tuners were running cooler. I’m sure this is less than 5 degrees but when you’re sitting over the rear head and tuner, it may matter. Thanks for the great video brother. 2FD I initially thought bare fins was cosmetic. What are your thoughts? SKWUID ET1(SS/SW/MTS) US Navy, Ret.

I don't think painting heads matters at all regarding heat. As long as you don't paint them with extreme amounts of thick layars and a brush. With a spraycan, like I do in my video's, all will be good. Again, these aren't motoGP bikes or something alike.

Just a quick question please, will it rust after some time? I wanna try this with my block but I'm worried if it would rust after some time, I guess applying a clear coat just on the scraped area would avoid the rusting problem....
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
No. The metal stays the same. If it's coated or not, if it's scraped or not. Don't worry, it won't rust
@andrewhayes4246
@andrewhayes4246 2 года назад
The barrels of the engines shown are aluminium not iron so will not rust. If used in salty conditions they WILL corrode so under these circumstances I would paint them VHT silver and not scrape them bare.

You could try. But you can't reach all the sides very well...
@christopherjohnston3772
@christopherjohnston3772 5 лет назад
You sanded the fins flat, if I heard correctly.. would think you would need to.. How is it holding up with the elements?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
Yes I sanded them first for two reasons. 1) you can scrape off the paint in a clean(er) way. Otherwise the paint will break around the round edges instead of nice clean edge. 2) you can polish the blank sides. You can do this before you paint it (then even easier to get the paint off) or later. It holds perfect in all weather. It's just exactly the same non ferro metal as a non painted engine piece.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
By the way. Just use a sanding machine to get those fins flat!

how did you mask the small hard-to-reach cam chain tightener area?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 года назад
Very easy actually. Use masktape on it. Then file the edges gently all the time untill the masktape breaks due to the wear. Or, when you see it's thin enough at those edges, you just can pull it off. What hasn't been scraped/filed just stays in place

May I ask how you got the cylinder clean between the fins?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 лет назад
Well I discuss this in various video's. I wetblasted (or vapourblasted) the whole engine. It's a different technique than sandblasting. You can search 'Vapour blasting' on RU-vid.

@andrewhayes4246

Any type of blasting will put grit inside the engine and so will necessitate extremely thorough cleaning. Then when you are certain it is clean, clean it again more thoroughly!

Good day sir, I would like to ask some questions regarding paint with my cylinder head. So I send my cylinder head for painting. Today I went to check and there's some paint spill over the combustion chamber or the valve area. I told him there's shouldnt be any paint there. He said he will try to get it off by grinding it. My worries are if he didn't do a good job getting rid of them will it cause me any harm using the cylinder head. Sorry im a new rider with limited knowledge
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
In the combustion chamber you could use a hone tool. But then you would also need new piston rings. The valve can be sanded really lighlty and carefully.

Never ever paint the fins... As you have mentioned the word 'cooling' (many times in your video), those fins are for (air) cooling purposes. Once you apply paint, you are adding an extra layer which may decrease air flow on metal surfaces, directly. It may contribute engine heat up to 10 degrees (C). Not much benefits other than cosmetics. Do not do it.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 лет назад
Ken To High Ken. I appreciate the concern. This is a show model. It will never go on a racetrack nor will be used for competition. Next to that, this engine paint (VHT) is specially designed for engine painting and thus tested under the most extreme conditions on engines. For years used by a lot of professional engine builders and tuners. Not to worrie. This 55hp 750cc cruiser engine will do just fine with this layer of paint.

Matt black is known to dissapate heat more efficiently than unpainted metals and especially if its highly polished. Radiators and old rally car bonnets are examples.
