As a couple of people mentioned, I forgot to include Joh Yowza and Droopy McCool in the band. Turns out they had gotten put next to my "Max Reborg Band" (the band as if they had been taken over by the Borg from Star Trek) and they never got put back in their proper places. But this might be a good chance to take a look at that video if you haven't seen it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sxa3K-ZZ2E4.html

I actually really loved these displays as a kid in the 90's. I had this one and Cantina version. I thought they were lightyears ahead of their plastic playsets of the detention block, Deathstar pit and Endor bunker they were putting out for a similar pricepoint. If they started producing something similar for $20, I'd buy them and reinforce them as needed. I think there's a market there.

These were close to $20 back in 1998 and that was when figures were $5 or $6 each. These were overpriced for the time and one reason why they flopped.

Before something like Haslab was even thought to have been possible...these shelf displays took us to that galaxy far, far away...we finally got our Oola AND an interior! Now, if Lucas would have only kept his ridiculous revision of Jabba’s band to himself...I do hate that sequence...

I had both dioramas, this and the cantina, but I never opened the Jabba's palace display. I love how the unique Han figure looks in the window. There's something about it. It's art. This Han figure looks like it could belong in the POTF2 line, or the POTJ line, it really tied those two together nicely.

I still use parts of this in my Jabba's Palace display. I've replaces the cardboard box throne with the proper throne from 2010, and I use the walls from the recent Walmart set. This makes a nice floor and backdrop still.

Most people will stick their noses up at these cardboard dioramas and playsets. But they are a great idea for a lot of playsets. And consider if you wanted a LOT of them. You can just fold them up and put them away neatly when you were not using them. Some of the most interesting ones were either hybrids with plastic furniture and props with printed cardboard matte paintings or could be upgraded over time if you got the accessories later. The Millenium Falcon for example was such a Hybrid, though primarily plastic vehicle with a playset in the back. Most people turn their noses up at them today because you can print these sets at home yourself for way less, cost of the printer and media notwithstanding. I liked the idea. I had the Starbird base tower (a Milton Bradley toy). a massive playset that was only cost effective in cardboard. It did not come with much on its own, having a tower and a couple of mini action figures and a rover scaled to the Starbird spaceship toy. There was at least one more spaceship to the collection, a smaller truncated black ship that actually looked like the bad guys vessel more than anything. The Starbird was released after the Avenger a mildly more aggressive fighter ship variant of the Starbird. GIJoe was one of the first toy lines to eschew cardboard playsets and dioramas for big expensive plastic, often not well made, playsets. Star Wars, with their more complicated and expansive sets lent themselves to printed cardboard playsets much more. When Star Wars did do the plastic playsets, they were disappointing limited, out of proportion, vast rooms were now tiny cubbyholes, having only one often not well designed and hard to build right feature and costing an utterly ridiculous amount. But if it was good for GIJoe, surely Star Wars would benefit by it as well. Thing is hybrid playsets worked better for Star Wars in most cases. The whole thing led to me making my own cardboard playsets for much of my childhood. My "masterwork" was an expansive base that could cover a full sized bed with numerous rooms and chambers the right size for most activities in the base. Unfortunately, I never got around to making a proper garage or hanger for my vehicles or teh elevated second level (I actually had no room to store for that addition). For a while I was tempted to make full gaming environments for Warhammer, WH40K, and other miniatures games. But life made that more time consuming than I was willing and finally able to allow.

Thanks for these videos, I really appreciate them!! I was one of those dumb kids who sold all my vintage Star Wars toys at a fleamarket at 25 cents a figure when I was 12 or so and now the adult me still has not forgiven myself for that. All I have left from that era is a vintage loose Darth Vader and that's it. :P To me it's a real shame that Hasbro never released a larger plastic playset of Jabba's Palace though and all we were given was that small 3-section display piece with Han hanging from the center wall. :( So I wasn't really all that enthusiastic about that Jabba's 'Palace' or the Tantive IV ... hallway. I love BIG playsets; not a minor section of a playset. :P But I guess for an actual Jabba's Palace playset of any significant size you'd probably need a HasLab kickstarter like that awesome $500 Khetanna sail barge or the upcoming $350 Razor Crest. At least that stuff, while expensive, does trigger my inner child and their massive size just looks phenomenal (provided you have the space). :D Sadly I missed out on the Khetanna kickstarter and when it did become available to us Europeans it was a lot more expensive than the original kickstarter. And ofcourse Ebay prices are even more ridiculous. Still keeping my eye on that Razor Crest though. It's €400 over here for the kickstarter but at least now European backers can back it through Zavvi. I even saw that Australian backers also have a way to get it through a local supply chain. Sorry for rambling but I really like what HasLab is doing and hope to see them making some large detailed display playsets at some point too. I was one of those who wouldn't have mind seeing a Dagobah playset but apparently that one was met with some heavy opposition from the fans. Maybe that's why HasLab suddenly ditched that plan and went with the Razor Crest instead. Unless the whole Dagobah thing was just speculation and rumor. ;) Anyways, thanks a lot for these videos and making me feel young(er) again! :P

Had one of these things when I was a kid. In retrospect pretty cheap, but when I was 8 years old it worked well enough. One thing I did with mine was have my dad cut a few pieces of scrap wood to insert in the hollow areas to fill them out. Helped a lot with stability. Also, the Episode 1 "Jabba Glob" was the far and away superior version of the character, lol.

One thing that you could do to make the cardboard sturdier is to paste a sheet of corrugated cardboard to the backs of the sides, and put polystyrene blocks under the steps to reinforce them. I do this when creating scenery myself, and with a bit of paint, you can make the scenery look very realistic. I have some videos that show how to make scenery like this.

I swear that for the solo movie there was a target exclusive one made of a thick cardstock. Hasbro did take another shot at the cardboard playsets in more modern times. This was in like 2004/2005, so it must've been on major clearance or backstock brought out to fill the shelves during Revenge of the Sith's run. I remember sitting at the kitchen table building this with my dad and then bringing it back to my room and putting all of my star wars figures in it. I had a ton of just old vintage Kenner figs and potf along with the saga collection Jabba and I had so much fun with this flimsy thing.

Here’s the thing: the play sets don’t really come with backdrops, and cardboard backdrops are the way to add atmosphere to your display, play set or photo shoot. They work like they do in a role playing game. The catch is that the play sets weren’t really designed to pair up with the cardboard sets. It would be better if Jabba’s throne could be placed in the Jabba’s palace diorama. Still ingenuity prevails.

Ok i have some kind of cardboard Jabba palace backdrop, but never opened it. It wasn't sold in stores, I had to order it and I think send in barcodes from opened figures, oh the pain!! I don't think it came with a figure. I sent away for a ghost OB1 also. Let my Star Wars insider magazine lapse in 2011 so I'm out if the loop completely now
