Climbing Cotopaxi Volcano in Ecuador - How it Works - Documentary

This is an accessible high altitude climbing experience open to anyone visiting Ecuador and looking for a quality challenge. Finding a guide company in the town of Quito is a simple matter. It will take two days including the prep and transport to the mountain. Some acclimatization will help significantly as you will need to get up to close to 20,000 feet in elevation to tag the summit.

It was a great climb for me in 2002! Toughest 7 hours of my life!

This is a great video! I attempted a climb in August 2015 when the mountain erupted. Luckily the weather prevented us from climbing anyway and we were able to evacuate.

Holy cow. That must have been an experience.

that "wind packed snow" is called Rime ice. 864 times! Legend!

The Rime ice was definitely something that demanded crampons, Karl. About the first time I've ever actually had to use them (or would have failed spectacularly). And yes, the other guide is a complete legend.

Watching this video brought back lost memories for me from 2012. 'Some' acclimatization? That's a high summit and looks as though you did it with style. Would emphasize 'SOME' acclimatization for people unfamiliar with that altitude!

With your luck you probably accidentally logged an FKT! I can't imagine what the guides thought of your accomplishment. Years ago we hiked the park that Cotopaxi is in and drove up to the Cotopaxi parking lot. The conditions at the parking lot were windy and cold enough that I realized I was out of my depth even there. Good on you for conquering this beast and thanks for bringing us along.

Ben, the FKT is absolutely insane by Karl Egloff. All the way up AND down in less than 2 hours. He is the guy taking Kilian Jornet's records away from him in the mountains. Total badass.

Fair enough, it wasn't an FKT. Still, I bet the conversation between you and the guide was priceless: "you'll need boots, crampons and 6 hours." Nope, nope and nope.

Great video! Even though it was dark at the top the scenery on the way down was excellent. Very inspiring.

Another great hike in Ecuador is the Quilotoa Loop. You can begin in Isinlivi and work your way to Cugchilan and then to the Quilotoa lake loop. You can access Isinlivi from Latacunga by bus or milk truck is you're feeling adventurous!! There are wonderful hostels along the way. I would recommend Llullu Llama in Isinlivi.

What do you mean by 'Some Acclimatization'? Saw Cotopaxi from a Mirador while in Ecuador last month and we wanted to go back. Any more recommendations?

If you've spent a week in Ecuador and/or around Quito before going to Cotopaxi, that would probably be very helpful. More time if possible.

Why do you have to leave so early? Do you have to be off the top by a certain time because of weather? Couldn't you leave the top at 9 or 10 am?
@KerryWard
@KerryWard 4 года назад
Climbing at night means the snow is more frozen and predictable. Also, many folks want to summit at daybreak. In hindsight, I should have asked to leave at least 90 minutes later than I did - and I already delayed the departure significantly over what they do with most groups.
@aaronramsonwhite
@aaronramsonwhite 3 года назад
Once the sun comes up, the snow and ice on the surface starts melting, making traveling more difficult (it freezes again at night). Also, there are crevasses that you cross on snow bridges-you want those bridges to be as solid as possible. Those crevasses are also the main reason you rope up with other climbers. If one of you falls in, the other climber(s) on tour rope team can rescue you.
