The final sorcerer in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is the Clockwork Soul Sorcerer! This is another sorcerer that has really caught my interest and while I like Aberrant Mind better, I still think I would have a lot of fun playing one. What do you think about the Clockwork Soul Sorcerer?

At the beginning, he left out the most amazing thing about this subclass: you can swap out origin spells for abjuration and transmutation spells. Animate Objects is a Transmutation spell, so you could definitely replace Greater Restoration with it at 10th level. But since it's ALSO on the sorcerer spell list (and is one of the better attack spells in the game), why not just learn Animate Objects and keep Greater Restoration? They're both great spells.

Armor of agathys sorcerer is pretty awesome. First thing you do is trade alarm for armor of agathys, since the text tells you that when you earn a level you can trade a spell earned in this feature (clockwork spell) for a transmutation or ABJURATION spell from sorcerer, wizard or WARLOCK spell lists. Then bastion of law is used to reduce the damage you take while still being hit, so, if someone wants to melee strike you and you protect yourself, armor of agathys still procs. Heck, I'm all pro making some kind of melee sorcerer just to abuse this stuff.

Hey Ted, and everyone who sees this comment. Im a big fan of you and the channel, as Ive been following you for some time, and decided that I would like to add to your content, and show my support. Therefore I have decided to add a few comments to this video. It essentially expands on Ted`s comments, and might help you when deciding which subclass to pick. My comment essentially adds a few uses of the abilities. I have never really liked the Sorcerer, especially because of the limited spell selection, but the new subclasses changes everything. Here are my observations for each of the features: 1st Level: Clockwork Magic This ability is even better than it seems at first glance. Its not only extra spells known, but the spell list is very customizable, and abjuration and transmutation are among the most versatile schools of magic. Below I've made a list, that shows some of the spells that you can swap in, instead of the ones in the original list. To not make it way too long, Ive only included the one that I would consider myself. They are listed by spell level, and you can choose two spells from each level: 1st level spells: Shield, Armor of Agathys, Absorb Elements, Feather Fall. 2nd Level spells: Alter Self, Enhance Ability, Enlarge/Reduce, Levitate. 3rd Level spells: Counter Spell, Glyph of Warding, Fly, Haste, Slow. 4th Level spells: Banishment, Control Water, Polymorph. 5th Level spells: Animate Objects, Telekinesis. We essentially get the same spell options, but with the added versatility of spells such as Greater Restoration. 1st Level: Restore Balance Cancelling advantage/disadvantage can be a big deal, in the right circumstances of course, but I still think that this is more useful out of combat. 6th Level: Bastion of Law Its nice that it doesn't take your reaction to use, but using 5 sorcery points for 5d8 "extra hit points", isn't great. The way I like to look at abilities like this is to compare it to spells, as you can convert a spell slot to a number of sorcery points equal to the slots level. A 5th level slots for 5d8 hit points? Not great if you ask me, but its nice that it stacks with temporary hit points, and becomes way more viable when you combine it with Armor of Agathys, as it gets to stay up longer, while stile doing damage. 14th Level ability: Trance of Order Very powerful. The first times you use this its free, and if we use the same measurement as before, this ability can be used again, as essentially a "5th level spell". Cancelling advantage on all attacks against you is great on its own, but the best part of it is the second part, since at 14th level, your proficiency bonus is +5: Assuming that you have a Charisma score of 20, and a Constitution score of at least 10, this ability automatically lets you succeed on any concentration save against an attack dealing 30 damage or less, and also automatically lets you hit any creature with an AC of 20 with a spell attack. Combine this with the fact that this applies to all other ability checks, attacks, and saves as well, and we have a very powerful ability. 18th Level: Clockwork Cavalcade Great ability, its nice that you get to use it once for free, but IMO its also worth spending your sorcery points on as well. By the same measurement technique as before, 7 sorcery points translates to a 7th level spell. The Heal spell, one of the best healing spells in the game, cast at 7th level restores 80 hit points, and can only heal one creature, as opposed to this effect that can divide the hit points as you choose. You can also use this to dispel any spell of 6th level or lower, affecting a creature or object of your choice, within the cube. This includes the big bads "Heroes Feast" or "Contingency" spell, and the "Dominate Person" cast on the barbarian. Just be careful when the barbarian also has a buff spell cast on them, or the big bad has a debuff spell cast on them. Also, since it is not a spell, it can't be counter-spelled. Overall very strong subclass, and perhaps the best Sorcerer subclass in the game. I hope this helped someone, and I look forward to your next video Ted!

Bastion of Law: What Ted said. Trance of Order: You get a rogue's reliable talent+, while yes it's a limited use feature, it feels perfectly balanced in all things (as it should be) Clockwork Cavalcade: The more I look at this, and think about what I can do, the more I like it. Final thoughts: As someone who enjoys chronomancy, I really enjoy this subclass, and there are a TON of time themed spells that you can choose from on the arcane spell list.

I think while the Warforged is a bit on the nose, a halfling or elf could work here. The halfling gets luck and the Elf can take elven accuracy. Both of those lend themselves to dice manipulation. You can also take the clockwork amulet - a common magic item (xanatars guide) - to get one free use of your 6th lvl ability. An chaotic outer essence shard would be nice too. I think the clockwork soul is a realy strong leveldip.

Fair warning, this is a rant, I am just going to share my giant list of opinions. I love the flavor and power level of this class, feels like you could actually play this class 1-20 without ever feeling the need to multiclass. Well, would probably still take a dip somewhere due to how garbage the Sorcerer capstone is (especially when you won't even learn a new spell after level 17) I think this ties into my biggest problem with Sorcerer both before Tasha's and especially now after. Why play any of the old bloodlines right now? (except DS) You are incredibly restricted early game in the spells department, you are essentially casting cantrips and praying you make it to level 3 to get Metamagic, which if we're being honest here, doesn't even feel that strong with you get it. I think most people understand that having double the amount of spells known at any given level up until level 9 is strong, but you really don't feel that until you play a Sorcerer in a long campaign. The ability to swap out a Metamagic choice on ASI is a slap in the fucking face. Are you joking? That was not the problem that people complained about (granted it was still a problem and I'm glad that being locked into a choice you made at level 3 has a path to change outside of DM pity) we wanted more Metamagic choices! You added two more options, which is great! Wonderful! We still only have two choices up until level 10 if we don't spend an ASI on a feat. That feat doubles the amount you get to select until Level 10, and adds another two flat sorcery points! Not only that, this is a feat that all other spellcasters can take! Were you a Bard who really wanted to be even more disgusting in social encounters? Have two uses of Subtle spell a day! A Variant Human Wizard can be a better Sorcerer until level 3. And the same people saying that the ability to change ONE SPELL on a long rest was stepping too much on the Wizards shoes don't find this to be the same? My changes for Sorcerer (which are not unique and are largely taken from a variety of voices in the community) - Give an additional Metamagic choice at level 6 - Give the Sorcerer the ability to cast Detect magic or a similar functioning ability as a ritual or as a once per short rest. - Change the capstone. Anything else. How about choose one Metamagic option that only costs one Sorcery Point, you can use it without expending any points. Something that let's the Sorcerer really feel like a super powerful magic master, which he is at that point! - Give every subclass Origin Spells, but maybe don't give them the ability to be swapped outside of the Sorcerer spell list. With one huge exception, Divine Soul needs 5 or they can't change the 10 that they get period. Giving them a flat ten extra spells that they can change is too powerful in my eyes. I think that there exists enough spells to fill these Origin spells with a sufficient amount of flavor, as can be seen with a lot of the Homebrew options that I have seen out there. - Give every subclass the ability to cast their Origin spells with sorcery points. - This depends on a lot and I haven't fully fleshed this out. Giving each class their own fun flavorful effect when they use Sorcery points to cast an Origin spell. Aberrant gets a better version of Subtle spell, Clockwork can have something removing advantage from saving throws (view this a less powerful Heightened), Draconic could get to ignore resistance to their given element or maybe a free transmute to their dragon element type, Storm can get a bigger AOE effect from Heart of the Storm or perhaps a free Empowered spell, Shadow gets something involving their hound, Wild get some gambling RNG clown fiesta. Divine Soul can get their choice of a free extended spell or a free distant spell. This concludes the rant.

Animate Objects is a Transmutation spell so you could swap it in, though its available for sorcerors anyway. Agathys is probably a swap in for alarm no brainer for me especially for a tiefling with the one use of hellish rebuke just returning all the damage, though catapult is better themed (though sorcerors get it available to them anyway). Rope Trick for Aid eventually (post level 6-7) seems like a good idea, especially if you have a paladin or cleric already in the group. Lesser and greater are great additions because you may need to heal the status effects if your paladin or cleric are affected by them. Rope Trick is pretty great though.

With the trance of order, remember that a counter spell is a ability check, this means after that bonus action you’d be able to automatically get at least a 10 on your counter spell ability check so you’d be a counter spell engine. Which would also not force you to have to upcast it. And a lot of these abilities not being spell based would also work theoretically while you are polymorphed.

I am playing a warforged UA Clockwork Soul sorcerer in one of my campaigns right now! I have only played him for a handful of sessions so far but he came in because my warlock character died trying to go out on a mission to get his reward from the deck of many things card where he had to single-handedly win the next encounter... The origin worked out very well for me though, because he is from an ancient deserted city in the region that was known for having warforged and he was a part of a warforged unit in the city police. He also has a 5-charge wand of magic missiles as his standard issue weapon, and then since he had passed the rank of detective he had a wand of secrets as well. (I got to create him as a level 9, soon to be 10 character and got to pick some stuff out) I'm excited to see how he goes along with this story as we have two warring wizards both from my Warforged's time, but his memory banks have been taken right after things between the two wizards went sour and the group has to figure our which one to actually side with while already helping to free one of them anyway.

I'm playing a Clockwork Soul sorc, and I was a little bummed by the spell changes, just in terms of flavor. However, I was especially bummed by the Restore Balance nerf, because using your proficiency bonus instead of CHA modifier effectively halves (or thirds) the amount of times you can use it until, when? Like 9th level, maybe 13th depending on your starting stats.
@Nildread
@Nildread 3 года назад
@sum body I can understand why they did this, to some extent. If it's tied to proficiency bonus you slowly get more uses/more power as you LVL up, rather than pumping all your points into charisma and profiting/waiting for asi to get more uses. But at the same time I agree that it does weird things with multiclassing. I guess it would be too complicated to try and make it only count the proficiency bonus from the class that gets the feature? like if you're a lvl5 sorc and a LVL 5 pally, for this specific ability it treats you like you're still only LVL 5 instead of LVL 10. But then you'd have to track multiple proficiency bonuses and that makes no sense.

With regard to a Warforged, I would want to play a Clockwork Soul Warforged Sorcerer only on Eberron. He receives a vision of Mechanus and while not really knowing of the universe outside of Eberron (not even sure it is real) he becomes obsessed with bringing this new vision of order to Eberron. With Clockwork order, Warforged and the other races could be equals and everyone in their place. It would be a bit like Malcom McDowell's Dr. Soren in Star Trek Generations wanting to bring the Nexus to him. This character would start out as loveable and trusted and considered one of the reliable "good guys" but longs for something which could ultimately open the door to Eberron to outside forces. (Imagine releasing the Modon March on Eberron and realizing afterwards what a well intended mistake it is.) I am trying to decide if it would be better to be a straight sorcerer or multiclass with the Bard of Eloquence or to partner with a converted Bard of Eloquence to spread the Word of the Clockwork Salvation. Those outside the cult would initially dismiss it until it is almost too late.

Swap out alarm for Armor of Agathys. Flexible casting means that sorcerers can be upcasting AoA with 4th or 5th level spell slots starting at level 6 and 7 respectively. Combining this with bastion of law can help you increase how long AoA stays in effect.
@Shalakor
@Shalakor 3 года назад
How did I never know that nothing in Flexible Casting prevented you from creating spell slots higher than you're currently capable of having naturally? Was this really never errata-ed or Sage Advice-ed? Was it ever confirmed as intended?
@44tuck3r
@44tuck3r 3 года назад
@@Shalakor no there isnt any errata to prevent this. They are limited by the sorcerer point cap which equals your level. It is a feature of the ability to do this, and it is only at level 6 when you first have access to enough sp to create slots higher than spells you can cast. However, it comes at a price - if you choose to cast spells at a higher level, you will he casting fewer spells overall across your day compared to sorcerers who aren’t. If you pick the right spells this isn’t an issue at all.
@44tuck3r
@44tuck3r 3 года назад
The divine soul sorcerer can make very good use of this with spiritual weapon at 4th level and upcasting spirit guardians. Of course, dealing damage with SG means you are in the fray, and if it is a deterrant for enemies then it isnt necessarily dealing damage enough to be useful. You have to be careful about defense then - do you want to be a target as a sorcerer?

still get really upset about that 8 level gap from the 6th to the 14th level without any subclass features i don't really know why it is there... it makes sense for Divine Soul i guess, you are gettin magics from other class, but even Wizards gain subclass habilities more frequently than that

@jaxonsellers1126
@jaxonsellers1126 3 года назад
@@zeterzero4356 Imma have to disagree. By 8th level, clerics have gotten 4 features from their subclass and then get an extra 5th at 17 whereas sorcerers have only gotten 2 features from their subclass by 6th level and dont get a 3rd until level 14. Clerics waiting 9 levels to get one more subclass feature than nearly all the other classes (the only exception being fighters who also get 5 levels of subclass features) is not near as painful as the 8 level gap between sorcerers (and bards) 2nd and 3rd subclass features
@zeterzero4356
@zeterzero4356 3 года назад
@@jaxonsellers1126 Uh...but it's only one level of difference. And all the classes have odd subclass progressions like that. I think the idea was the fill those gaps with new meta magic features but that isn't super exciting to me. At least some of the optional class abilities help a little to fill a few of those gaps.

Could someone name all the Sorcerer subclass options that are 5e cannon for me.....
@Dennis-vh8tz
@Dennis-vh8tz 3 года назад
The name leaves me with a hard to shake first impression that this is a steampunk subclass that won't fit into a traditional fantasy campaign. Yet that isn't true at all of the actually abilities and only is only marginally true of the flavour text, which focuses on Mecahanus. I like the subclass but find myself wishing it had a different name. Access to the Warlock list is really good, as it contains spells that aren't normally available to the Sorceror and are designed for characters with limited spell slots.

What a coincidence. They added my favorite in this book too: scribes wizard. It's the first wizard class that felt like it actually studied how magic was created instead of just improving the magic that already exists in a static form which is like a chemist that only studies carbon. I hope they didn't mess too much up.
