The last of the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything subclasses has arrived with the Order of Scribes Wizard. This is a "scholarly" wizard and I find I don't love a lot of the abilities. Some are great but others I feel could be relegated to simple magic items.

Regarding the use of "attuned" for the spellbook, here's what the text says: " ...in a blank book or a magic spellbook to which you're attuned." What I understand by this is that you can replace your awakened spellbook with: A) A blank book OR B) A magic spellbook (i.e. a magic item, which is a spellbook), in which case you must first be attuned to the spellbook before you can awaken it.

Just cantrips alone would be fun. - Conjure your spectral book and send it into a room full of ghosts and cast sword burst as you move it throughout the room. - Conjure it as a scholar from the past and use minor illusion cantrip to produce wails or screams as you send it floating through the streets to terrorize a village. - Conjure any form and use it to extend the range of dancing lights, move it up the road to a castle gate; a spiraling column of text with three orbs of light swirling around it, all while you sit back and observe telepathically. - Use it to manifest mage hand and carry a ransom note, bribe, or head of a guard to a noble inside his office chambers. Use your bonus action to move the manifested mind, your action to control the hand, and no action to observe sight and sound what is happening. So much fun can be had.

04:42 Note the wording "with a type that appears in another spell in your spell book". This to me means if you have Chromatic Orb or Dragon's Breath in your spell book, any of the damage types you can choose are a valid option, as they appear in the spell. More important in my opinion is Spirit Shroud, as it allows you to deal extra damage to creatures within 10 feet and gives you the option of dealing cold, necrotic or radiant for that extra damage. So imo, as per the ability as it's written in Tasha's, you can have a Radiant Fireball. Just in case Fireball wasn't OP enough.

I think Manifest Mind is better than you give it credit for. It's essentially just an Arcane Eye except more visible, a maximum distance of 300 feet (which is enough for most cases), without concentration, no duration, and you can cast spells from it. In my opinion, Arcane Eye is a pretty good spell and you're getting something equivalent at least once per long rest, one level before you can get Arcane Eye, and you can get more uses of it by expending a 1st level spell slot. Imagine this: you send the spectral mind scouting ahead and find a combat encounter. You start casting spells at them and they can't do anything about it unless they have a spellcaster with dispel magic. Once you soften them up a bit, your party can rush in and wipe the floor with what's left.

2 minutes per spell level is an INSANE feature if, BIG IF, your DM litters the world with opportunities to copy spells into your spell book. Six (three for a specialist of the appropriate school) hours to put one level 3 spell in your book may not actually be possible given your campaign even during downtime between sessions if your party rests in the field. Six minutes, though? That’s easy. Expand this to 9th level spells. 18 hours or 18 minutes? The economy of actions is a big thing in DND, and time is VERY valuable - this subclass eliminates the single biggest shortcoming a Wizard faces in an extended campaign by allowing that Wizard so much extra time. I absolutely love it.

The ability to cast spells from 300 feet away, from a point that is immune to everything but dispel magic is insanely good. You can scout well ahead giving you the drop on enemies, yes they know somethings up but your group still has a huge advantage, AND you can start blasting through it with absolutely no possibility of retaliation. Nothing like fireballing a roomful of kobolds (for example) and they have NO idea where you are... all they ever saw was a floaty ghost book and then the world around them burns. This literally lets you use the dungeon against any enemies instead of the other way around. Another tactic you can use if you wannna save spell slots... use the manifested mind as a lure to an ambush... there are so many potential uses just gotta use your imagination.

Since it's spell levels, not slots, that you loose when using One With the Word it synergizes nicely with the base premise of you filling your book up with every spell you come across. Though it might be pushing it, the cost and time for wizards to copy a spell is materials for experimentation as well as the special ink needed. With Wizardly Quill you don't need ink and the amount of experimentation you could do in two minutes are pretty much none. According to the RAW/RAI/RAF I'd probably let anyone playing a Wizard just go wild and copy everything they find with no cost. As a DM you can always control the flow of available scrolls to keep it balanced and in my experience the written adventures seems to be quite sparse on scrolls anyway.

Yeah, I have a massive issue with this class: WotC either doesn't remember that there are reasons things aren't easy to do, or they are making it clear that they don't like the way they originally handled it. Halving the cost and drastically reducing the time spent on spell transcription is literally just combining the 2nd Level features of every default Wizard class and then some. It's too good at what it does, and it allows this Wizard to load up with a disgustingly high number of spells basically without issue. Combine that with the spell scroll transcription, both for free and half cost, and it's too good. Every other Wizard subclass now has the opportunity cost of "but you're not playing Order of the Scribes". On top of that, the ability to change a damage type of a spell completely breaks some of the balance of those spells. Fireball is able to be that powerful because even though you can destroy a whole building, it's a damage type that's HUGELY resisted. Now I can just make it a giant necrotic AoE because I learned Vampiric Touch? And it's not even like that's a difficult thing to take because it's just 6 minutes over breakfast with any decently powerful Wizard. There are checks and balances in this game that this class just gets to avoid for free. Everyone already points out that Wizards are very powerful in 5e, this is just taking that to the extreme.

With this Wizard Subclass, you could pick up Chromatic Orb for the 1st level spells, Dragon's Breath for the 2nd level spells, and the new spell Spirit Shroud for the 3rd level spells. Imagine casting Scorching Ray at 3rd level and using the radiant damage from Spirit Shroud, or having a necrotic damage fireball, or even have your Summon Undead spell deal radiant damage!
@ryanweaver3348
@ryanweaver3348 3 года назад
The spell damage type you are changing to has to be from a spell of the same level as the one you are casting. So if spirit shroud is 3rd level and does radiant, you could make a radiant fire ball or lightning bolt, but not magic missile or cone of cold...
@lukemartineau490
@lukemartineau490 3 года назад
@@ryanweaver3348 Normally that's true. Cone of Cold couldn't use Spirit Shroud's radiant damage because they're not on the same level. However, Magic Missile could use Spirit Shroud's radiant damage IF the wizard casts Magic Missile with a 3rd level spell slot. That's kind of why you would need Chromatic Orb at 1 AND Dragon's breath at 2 AND Spirit Shroud at 3 so that you have something at each level to pull different damage types from. Diverse damage types get a little more scarce beyond 3rd level, but the principle still applies.

I liked the old mechanic of avoiding death by sacrificing a spell. Wizards are all about gaining knowledge, especially this subclass. The main selling point for this class is Manifest Mind at level 6. It's a great feature. An improved version of find familiar. The question becomes: Is it worth sacrificing all other wizard subclasses to gain an improved find familiar? And you have to wait 6 levels to get it. The answer is no...

Manifest Mind allows you to get up to all sorts of shenanigans. Use it like Arcane Eye but at 6th level. Send it forward to attack and nothing short of a Dispell Magic can affect it. If you need to get around its inability to pass through objects, just pair it up with one of the summoned creatures.

Seems like everybody didn't read the Manifest Mind ability correctly in one way or the other. It's a good ability, free arcane eye-like spell is good. It is not good as many think. You CANNOT scout with it, it glows so it is easily spotted and it can't pass throught objects, you know like doors for example XD. The casting is also pretty limited, when you get the feature at level 6 you have a proficiency bonus of 3 so you can do that three times and that's it for the day. Moreover it can't take actions, for example it can't hide. It's still a good feature and maybe one the best of all the level 6 wizard subclasses features but it is hardly broken.

My thoughts... Wizardly Quill: Flavorful insanity, like Ted said. Awakened Spellbook: It's cool thematically, but it feels like a mechanical flop when you really look into it. Making your spellbook your focus is nice, until you realize that you become even more helpless if you lose it for whatever reason, and being able to ignore the extra 10 minutes for ritual casting once per day sounds good, until you realize that there are only 9 spells currently that would really benefit from this (Most of the ritual spells a wizard gets have a 1 minute casting time, and chances are if you have 1 minute you have 10). The only good thing about this ability is that you can swap damage types, and even that has been hamstringed by requiring you to have a damage type of every type of every level in order to truly get the full use out of it (something that is literally impossible atm since not every level has every type of damage). This was a really good ability that got completely wrecked by the "balancing" team. Manifest Mind: So your spellbook becomes a worse familiar that can be dispelled, "nice". Master Scrivener: So far this is the only other good ability that the class gets, other than your quill, and it makes more sense, both thematically and mechanically, to be your 10th level ability instead of your 6th. One with the Word: This is SO much better than the UA version and actually makes that laughable excuse of a "familiar" you get at 6th level actually useful. Final thoughts: The subclass has some interesting thematics and flavor options, but it completely sucks as a subclass until you hit level 10, and since most campaigns unfortunately make it past that for one reason or another, this one is a complete flop for anything beyond a 2 level dip for that cool quill you get.

They Ted and Nerd Immersion community; I would argue that Manifest Mind is the single strongest 6th level Wizard feature yet printed. 1) It is similar to the 4th level spell Arcane Eye, but this doesn't require you to cast a spell slot. Allowing for excellent scouting which is better than a Familiar in that a Familiar can take damage and die from a trap, or hostile force, etc. 2) Communication with it is instantons and likely intelligent (DMs discretion, as it is a manifestation of your Spell Book) 3) It has no duration, so you can have this up always (synergizes with other scribe features). 4) You can cast spells through it from up to 300 feet way. If you use it to cast harmful spells against entities, they cannot harm the book back (and depending on your setting and DM, there is a solid chance that they will not know Dispel Magic or if they do, that Dispel Magic will work on the floating spectral thing). 5) I sure there are other aspects to it, but that is what comes to mind right now. Order of Scribes isn't the most powerful Wizard subclass; as nothing will likely ever compare to a Chronurgy Magic Wizard that gets access to Arcane Abeyance (Tiny Hut); but it is very good.

@Deltajugg
@Deltajugg 3 года назад
1. Bladesinger requires high DEX for maximized AC while wearing light armor/using Mage Armor, needs high INT for maximum Bladesong benefit to AC, and needs decent CON/Tough feat for survivability, you being a glasscannon class going into melee and all. 2. While you should focus on maximizing DEX/INT with your ASI every 4 levels, you should take War Caster/Resilient (CON) if possible for better Concentration. Mobile/Tough might also help. Starting with a Variant Human/Tasha's new origin/lineage/heritage for a bonus feat is also a good option, especially now that Bladesinger doesn't have the elf race requirement. 3. Get Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade cantrip 4. Choose your weapon Proficiency. You can't use shields, two-handed weapons or ranged weapons, you don't benefit from versatile property, but you're most likely to benefit from finesse. Your best choices are: a) Rapier for 1d8 damage die b) Whip for 1d4 damage die and reach c) Daggers (of returning, if possible) for 1d4 damage die, dual wielding & throwing at a safe distance d) Shortswords/Scimitars for 1d6 damage die + dual wielding 5. Consider Multi-Classing with whatever will get you a Fighting Style (like a Fighter) so you can get Dueling for Rapier/Whip or Two Weapon Fighting for Daggers/Shortswords/Scimitars. Wizards are not heavy on using bonus actions, so you might actually make some use of it on occasion. You can't use a shield anyway, might as well have two weapons for that Song of Victory bonus, giving you 1d6+DEX+INT on a bonus action attack. 6. Consider these spells: Shield, Absorb Elements, Blink, Mirror Image, Blur, Stoneskin, Haste, Spirit Shroud, Shadow Blade. All of these either help you survive or help you dish out even more damage. 7. A 20 DEX, 20 INT Bladesinger with Studded Leather Armor +3 will have 25 AC, 26 AC if you take Dual Wielder feat and hold two weapons. That's without Shield spell that gives you another 5 AC for a potential maximum of 31. Even without a +3 enhancement on the armor, that's 23 AC boosted to 28 with Shield spell. 8. Use Booming Blade/Green-Flame Blade Cantrip + Extra Attack (+ bonus action off-hand attack when dual wielding) every time you take the Attack Action for maximum damage that's comparable to Fighter's. 9. Cast buffing spells as appropriate. Blink + Mirror Image don't require concentration. You can have them + your high AC + Shield/Absorb Elements at the ready + you can concentrate on Haste for bonus hasted attack/Shadow Blade for more damage etc. Whatever spell slots you have left you can use for occasional Fireball when needed. 10. Try to find the right balance between casting spells like a classic wizard, buffing yourself for melee combat, and burning spell slots for damage reduction with Song of Defense. 11. Absorb Elements will sometimes reduce way more damage than a spell slot you'd burn for Song of Defense. Be mindful of that. Bottom line is, Bladesinger is MAD (Multi-Attribute Dependent), but other than that the class is very powerful when you get to achieve that with high ability rolls. Hope that helps!

Treantmonk outlined the strengths of this subclass really well. This is a wizard that can copy an entire enemy wizard's spellbook into their book while the party is taking a short rest. Every other wizard who finds a spellbook has to pick and choose the one or two spells they are going to spend the next 8 long rests copying. They get a long range spy that can walk into any enemy stronghold and is unstoppable until an enemy spell caster casts dispel magic on it. Sure that's what other wizards use their familiars for, but familiars have hit points and can die. The ghost book is unstoppable unless the enemy roster includes a caster with dispel magic, or a magic item with dispel that your party can expect to find in the loot pool. Their capstone effectively lets them never die. Wizards get double the number of spells all orher casters get each time they level. On top of that they can copy all the spells on their spell list into their books. So when you get that capstone at high level spells like witch bolt, agazzars scorchers, and pyrotechnics become useful for the first time. All those low level spells that you stopped preparing once you got fireball, haste, fly, and polymorph become a pool of charges for what is basically a better version of relentless endurance. And that's not even counting all the damage type swapping you get with this class. Fireball can now deal all the danage types listed in glyph of warding and could kill can deal force damage thanks to bigbys hand.

You can still very easily die. If a fight goes wrong and you have no escape this will not save you since you can only use it 1/long rest. What it's great for is non-combat instakills, but how often will that come up? Fireball can now deal all the danage types listed in glyph of warding and could kill can deal force damage thanks to bigbys hand. Damage swapping is ok, but not amazing. Reading "one with the word", the damage you take doesn't need to reduce you to 0 hit points, you could use it to prevent the first hit in combat, but the ability still explicitly says you drop to 0 hit points if you don't have enough spells in the book to prevent the damage.
