Southern Airways Express flight 9X246, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, force-landed on Loudoun County Parkway roadway, two minutes after takeoff from runway 30 at Washington-Dulles International Airport, DC (IAD).
The aircraft came to a stop at the side of the road and was evacuated. Photos of the aircraft show propeller blades were bent in the emergency landing.
All 5 passengers and both crew members escaped from the aircraft uninjured and there was no fire.

IMPORTANT:
The main purpose of this video is educational, i.e. to provide example situations for people who want to become pilots or air traffic controllers and to provide them with information. In addition, the aim here is to provide current pilots and air traffic controllers with access to radio conversations around the world so that they can think about how they should behave in situations they are likely to encounter in the future.
While preparing the content, I follow important aviation events and news from around the world. I check whether I can access the radio conversations by looking at the date and time zone of these events.
Then, I listen to the conversations over and over again to prepare subtitles and note down the relevant parts. Finally, I prepare an animation or get it from tracking websites and put it all together.

Great example of aviate, navigate, and then communicate. Flying the plane down to the ground was the #1 priority. Talking to ATC is a distant third especially when it happened that quick.

Why is it when someone has an emergency, everybody starts talking on the radio at the same time. Its absolutely amazing. Fortunately ATC caught it.
@Dr_Kenneth_Noisewater
@Dr_Kenneth_Noisewater 7 месяцев назад
Who cares if ATC caught it. What's ATC going to do that can't be done 2 seconds later? Talking on the radio is the last priority in an emergency. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. In that order. These pilots did it right and didn't even call until they had dealt with the emergency.
@dannyp848
@dannyp848 7 месяцев назад
I don’t think it’s necessarily that people deliberately start talking at the same time. The pilots get very very busy so they can only speak when they get the chance to do so and until it’s clearly stated by those pilots on said frequency that they declared an emergency, nobody else will know even if they get stepped on by accident

Former Southern Airways Express 208 captain here. This crew demonstrated commendable airmanship. These pilots make me proud to have once flown here. Southern Airways Express pilots often fly more than six flights in a day in low IFR conditions with little or no assistance from autopilot. This forges excellent pilots and that fact certainly showed in this crew.

So, a Southern Airways Cessna Caravan loses power just after takeoff at Dulles International Airport. It’s safe landing on a highway, was just as impressive as the “miracle on the Hudson” some 15 years ago. Kudos to the pilots. I am sure Captain Sullenberger is impressed. Unfortunately that emergency landing also shows the “Achilles Heel” of single engine aircraft. In commercial aviation, engine failures are more common than pilots becoming incapacitated. And yet, Southern Airways is planning to use a plane with two pilots, but only one engine here at Williamsport. And it is not like Southern Airways doesn’t have twin engine planes in its fleet. They do. Perhaps if they offered fewer flights, but with more capacity, they could use them at Williamsport. Finally, 20 years ago or so, scheduled commercial flights at the Williamsport airport used Beech 90 King Air turbo-props It was a small twin engined plane and carried 9 passengers or so. And the Beech 90 King Air is still being produced.

Could have been idle or low power. Could have even been a prop issue that caused the loss of thrust. Will be interesting to see what the investigation finds.

Back in prop days, just about as many pitch control units dies as did engines. P&W PT-6 may be the most reliable engine in the skies. Just looked it up, Estimated time between failure is something like 360,000 hours, or 41 years!
@gostatyrefors5612
@gostatyrefors5612 7 месяцев назад
When the fuel control unit breaks the engine is still running and you can control it by the MOR level. My guess NTSB will find this and announce on Monday. It happens way to often with PT6 engines and the pilot often mistakes it for an engine failure.

Caravans and Pilatus Pilots have to do EFATO Turnbacks well on simulator BEFORE they are allowed to fly that aircraft. Cant do it? That is the door, dam coward they say. 270 degree Turnback practice makes you do 90 degree landings much easier. Some CFi' s say he should not turn and crash on the forest straight ahead.
