Closing up the holes in our boat | Episode 179
Recently we sailed to the boatyard to get hauled out here in Curacao. It’s been 2 years since we had Saoirse out of the water, so we got to work right away looking into things that needed to be fixed. But once we started digging, we actually found something we were not expecting. Water in our keel. Fast forward through a bunch of drilling, grinding and sanding and now we need to get to work on closing up these big holes in our hull. This is turning out to be one of the biggest projects we’ve ever done on this boat.
We are starting a fund for any help you guys would like to offer in helping us take care of dogs along our journey, if you would like to donate, please do so here: bit.ly/oonas-friends . If there is any other way that you would like to help, please email us at beauandbrandy@gmail.com
big love,
Beau + Brandy

You may find it easier to wet the surface first before laying the glass fibre then wetting it out and smoothing , and those strands will be no problem;using the solid roller too gets out those possible bubbles-Just saying!

hello , you should fill up all inner keel gaps injecting 2 Part liquid waterproof closed cell Polyurethane Foam , let it expand and cure , sand it , laminate on top and finally use the expoxy filler to level and to be sanded . Not good you left cavities inside keel . Water will find again its way in from the bilge and compromise the solidity . Good luck and nice of you for feeding the dogs ) ! Note: If you already did the laminate repair job you can still drill few holes and inject the foam to try fill all air gaps inside keel.

We recently filled some cavities around some built in tanks. They had a layer of some kind of porous foam material around them and the water had got in. We scraped and vacuumed out the foam best we could before shooting the cavity full of expanding foam. A hidden cavity like that is just an invitation to Old Man Trouble.
@lostsailor2089

agreed, those cavities scare me. If they hit a rock the hull skin in that area is thin and could crack and then the cavities would fill with water. The whole structure looks much lighter than I would have expected

Beau, People think that you get some cloth, and resin mix. It up. In order to fiberglass correctly resin and harder need to be mixed correctly and use different type rollers designed for fiberglass work. You also need to let the each layers cure completely .

G'day Beau, I reckon after you opened up the affected area, removed all the delaminated and rotten core, damaged skin, let the hull completely breathe & dry ~ You then should've back filled the large openings with a core material, whatever is available on the Island. There's even injectable foam you can squirt into the voids and once it cures, it's hard as plywood - and makes a great backer. It's not good to leave voids in your hull mate. They can compromise the integrity! Good luck on your repairs. Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺.

Yes, like others said, wet the area first with resin then the cloth will stick so you can then wet the cloth more with a roller and get rid of bubbles.

Correct me if I'm wrong the manufacturer of the boat originally built it with encapsulated ballast and left voids in the ballast for water to get in and stay , Wow. How about lead shot and epoxy mix poured in from the top to fill the voids ?

Don’t throw good money after bad. You two need a new boat. It’s a matter of safety. It’s ok - Many time good things wear out. This boat is more than a home. It has to be a vessel you can trust with your lives. I am not sure, in rough weather, 300 miles off shore, that you could comfortably rest your head on a pillow confident that your safety is well taken care of.

Be sure to watch Parlay Revival, they do more fiberglass than anyone period, and they've really got it down. Might help. Their boat has put them through the ringer but they persisted. Another monohull had a rotten bulkhead and took care of it, more of this fiberglassing with structural things being done like Parlay did. They have a way to bond the pieces together. Actually, the other boat isn't too fare from you.

I we the glass and transfer the wet glass on a melamine-faced plywood board to carry it to the hull, then work from the top down pulling it off the board as you roll it on to the hull. Once you have it on there, you can roll out the resin before adding another layer of cloth. I only ever use epoxy resin on repairs--it bonds to anything and keeps for years. I also use melamine faced board (they use it for forming concrete) and I put release compound on it, then a layer of glass or two and using small paint rollers, even out the resin and consolidate it using a consolidating roller. I put peel-ply on top for the final rolling to avoid having to sand the top surface. Once it has set, you can use it as backing for any fibreglass repairs, and as a former to stay as part of the repair because epoxy sticks well to any polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy surfaces if well cleaned and sanded.
@michaelalbert8474
@michaelalbert8474 2 года назад
All good advice. I would have also filled the voids with foam to provide some backing for the glass. The voids left will fill with water again as it is a low point in the boat.

Keep in mind if man made it man can fix it. Not sure what exactly was there every situation is different but in the future maybe research a little foam in the can would have held that glass level. Fill the hole up and Cut the excess foam off level with the repair probably would have given you a good foundation. Awesome job and the best thing is you saved your self about 12 grand.

Brother when your doing your glass work wet the cloth out on a table covered with Saran Wrap. Then move it to repair location previously wetted with resin and you won’t have to fight gravity and excess resin is out of the glass cloth already. Saw this at skater race factory in Michigan in the 80’s changed how I do small jobs. Works great with extra help. Hope this helps!

Hey guys. Great video. I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way, but I have to give HUGE shout outs to Brandy for getting right in there with these repairs! When my wife and I chose the same lifestyle, it was one of the considerations that I’d have to ask her for her help to do some pretty crappy jobs at least twice a year (haul out etc IF NO unforeseen problems). She has taken this one and jumps in and does the most mundane, dirty and mind numbing tasks without any complaints. For this, I consider myself lucky to have such a great partner in our boat life and marriage. Brandy does the same! Not only there for a helping had when Beau needs it, but getting right in there doing the crappy jobs as well. Way to go!!! Beau, you too get my huge respect as you’ve taken on so many jobs to do yourself where I might have given up a long time ago! Your never say die attitude is contagious. There have been times where I’ve been doing a job and kinda bitter about it but thought to myself, “Beau and Brandy have done this or a similar job that was MUCH LARGER so suck it up!” Haha. While you guys might get the odd constructive criticism and not done everything perfectly, you continue to make things work to continue your lifestyle and are an inspiration to us! KEEP GOING and we will keep watching! Oh yeah, we also love that you take care of the dogs you encounter along the way! ❤️

I put a link in last weeks but capt Q was looking at a boat of similar vintage and that was built with drains in the keel to deal water getting down into those voids. You might want to mark or record where they drop down for future reference. Nice of the local guy to show you how to roll the resin into the mat to get a smoother finish and less chance of bubbles included.👍🏼😎 Those pooches were literally starving ... they will miss you badly.

I have used fiberglass for over 45 years that boat is laid up with polyester resin my opinion you should never use the epoxy on it there will be delamination within 2 years he should fill those holes with some type body filler my suggestion would have been tiger hair and being on the bottom of the boat where nobody sees it I would have enlarged the area taking off the old gel coat around the holes. place large patches of 1.5 oz mat yes you will have bulges but the. Repair would of been as strong as the hull was originally

If you do not want to fill the voids, I suggest to laminate a sheet on plastic to create a thin board. Cut pieces slightly larger than the openings and glue them with thickened resin to the inside, possibly fixed with a screw and wood from outside to pick up the shape of the hull. Once cured, you can laminate the structural hull over the glued board.

theres an argument about patching hull holes . if going from a large pc to a smaller pc of fiberglass vrs starting with a small pc to larger pcs. the thought is, if you start with a large pc and it fails bonding to the hull, every pc which is over it is gone.....if you start with a small pc then each additional larger pc will have contact with the hull. therefore if any one pc fails adhesion. there are additional layers still bonded to the hull.

I see you got the glassing done. Yea, the joy of sanding! When you get to the point of final fill to make it look new again. To save you time, don't worry so much about making it look perfect. Because it will get painted and it will be hidden under water. Unless you plan on selling the boat than fairing will be critical. Just get it done and get her wet is the name of the game. Don't swet the little stuff. Well good luck my friends and see you next week.

Ah yah I had gaping cavities in my boat too that I repaired! I was eagerly watching if you were going to make the same mistakes I did and made the same conclusions haha which you did through trial and error like me haha. I too made a a slurry of epoxy and fiberglass and shoved it in there in stages to build it up to have a have the fiberglass sheets to bond to. The surface to be bonded to at that point after building it up is sorta ends up looking like a pack of instant noodles... Then sand it down so it's smoother than rough it up. Yeah you can't seem to follow the same tapering rules on the edges of the hole anymore and just go full ham on bonding to a strong filler to help set up the structure. I'm still learning alot too. It's endless and fails and mistakes just make the lesson better. Also make sure you don't let that lady get away she's a keeper helping you out haha!

Hello guys. Ran across this video by Captain Q where he describes the ballast compartment in the a Pearson 35. Take a peek at the uTube video - at the 7 minute mark he mentions that the design of the boat had a removable plug installed in the ballast area to drain off the water that accumulates in the ballast compartment. on your boat that plug must have removed by a previous owner.

Too late now but I’ve found corner taping Saran Wrap on plywood the placing the cut glass mat on the Saran and pour mixed epoxy on mat and rolling with grooved roller until mat is transparent. Then pull up impregnated mat and Saran and place mat against hull and roll against Saran to get good contact. Finally carefully pull off Saran. Add next layer or better impregnate all 6 at once and apply one after another. Leave Saran on last layer while it cures to give a smoother final outer finish. Works on any surface orientation

Semi Wetting out on a piece of foil on a table, then applying to hull, then fully wetting on with roller is the best method. Especially working on vertical surfaces.

@davidprocter3578
@davidprocter3578 2 года назад
Not going to repeat what everyone else has told you already, some of it is bollocks by the way, hope your CSM is epoxy compatible if not could prove problematical down the line. I can't understand why the builders left those voids in the keel not something I have come across in british built boats lead steel and concrete ballast usually bedded in with a high strength gloop of resin chopped strand and fine filling powder. makes them far more resistant to bottom pounding. With patches start small and get bigger. the great thing with GRP if you have cocked up you can always cut it out and start again so don't sweat up over it, it is probably not as bad as you think unless it is a complete pigs ear it will probably be adequate.
