For the longest time I thought those were the fans too, as they can be loud, but when locomotives make THAT much noise? That is not normal, I now believe more than ever that it is a turbo. It's not a "blown" turbo, it just vibrates at high speeds for whatever reason, maybe deposits throw it off balance.
@@TracksideTyson Interesting, while it seems to happen to GEs sometimes, I wonder if EMD 710 turbos are just more prone to unbalance. Maybe new GE engines have a similar turbo design?
Dynamics and cooling fans never sound this way. They would have blown up long before getting to this level. Imagine a turbocharger the size of a tree trunk, spinning upwards of 18-20,000 RPMs on a 710, and throw an imbalance in the turbine wheel, and you get an oscillation that carries for miles. Bingo. There's the sound.
@@tator05 Sorry but you’re wrong. That IS the cooling fans on top of the locomotive at full RPM. Notice how the pitch changes as soon as the second locomotive’s cooling fans pass the camera, that tells you that’s where the sound is coming from.
LOL. If you were at Carvel on that date at that time, I was probably not more than a mile away from you, not railfanning on that occasion. In Alberta, everyone's your neighbor!
