CNC Router Woodworking - This Pisses Me Off!!!

CNC router woodworking is an amazing craft for anyone to take up, regardless of what they do. I have seen many craftsmen and woodworkers take it up because their hands were hurting too bad from arthritis or lugging around large lumber from the mill.
Esp[esially for those who are going into retirement and looking for something new to do that is creative. This CNC technology, routers, lasers, plasma, 3d printing are all crafty ways to build a skill. And each one has its own skill to embrace.
This is not to degrade anyone with exceptional skills. It is to call out those who think they are too good to support someone who does not have a master skill but needs to express their own creativity. Encourage, validate, and celebrate!

Garrett, i totally 200% agree. I dont pay to much attention to social media, but I quickly tire of some of the negative comments. I really appreciate your channel and enjoy following you. I am a retired 74 year old and have taken the plunge recently and bought a cnc. Here in Austalia I managed to get one made here and am setting it up as we speak. I am using vcarve pro and gSender. I must admit I am a tad nervous as I near my first project. Keep going Garrett, I may well be screaming for help very shortly.

Garrett, I'm the guy who told you the story about the sewing! All I can say is this vid ROCKS! I've found that almost in every case the Nay Sayers are the ones with the least amount of talent, ability, or personal DRIVE to even try to achieve something. I always ask them if I can see some of their work in this field of endeavor...never hear from them again! I equate them to movie critics. When was the last time you saw a movie made by a movie critic. I'll get off my soap box now. Keep the vids coming.

Now is the time to say Thank you! It is very difficult to find information about CNC tools and how to use them properly. There are thousands of types on the market, that's why your videos are very useful! It is also very useful to learn from someone who has experience working with these machines and tools because the manufacturers do not provide enough data.

You are a good guy, man. That was one of the most righteous and proper rants about creativity -- let alone the CNC version of it -- that I've ever heard. I was a woodshop brat in high school, and I'm an amateur musician (bass player). My biggest project was to build a bass in woodshop, like back in 1981. I didn't finish it, but I came *really* close. Having just the knowledge that I was taught by my superb woodshop instructor, I *almost* succeeded in building an instrument I've been playing now for over 40 years. Everything you say in that video is spot-on, and also has an analogy in music. I've become pretty okay as a bassist, but I'm not a professional and probably lack certain skills required to be one (for example, having memorized a ton of jazz standards, or being a better sight-reader). And I totally GET when I'm seeing/hearing someone with those skills! I'm not so dumb that I don't recognize a Master. So, like you we're saying about master wood-workers: "I don't need to be told that I'm not at your level, or that I did something wrong, or screwed something up." I'm very well aware of that, because something inspired me, way back when, to learn how to play the instrument, even if I haven't risen to a certain level, and it was those same Masters! A CNC machine is an instrument. It's a device we use to express our creativity. I myself may not be the most accomplished, and I always welcome constructive criticism. But you're so right. Some people seem to exist mainly to tear other people down, to tell them that they messed up, that they *suck* at this, and so on. What a bleak life that must be! Patrolling Facebook to critique someone else's carve? (And by the way, I totally don't get the criticism of your beautiful carve. To me, I was like: Well, if he just flips it 90 degrees to the left, from my perspective, everything is right and proper. Stars and Bars are in the right place, etc. I would not have dreamed of that criticism in a million years!) Also, incidentally, your "Luthier's Bit Set" is pretty darned inspired, and I will be purchasing one soon! You totally got to the essence of what's required to carve those thick bodies!

Some people seem to find it impossible not to criticize others work, and some people just cannot give someone any praise or admiration without quantifying it and it pisses me off as well. Back in the 80's, when I was in college, I had a friend that was an art student and could draw pictures that looked like a photograph, I was also into art but did not commit as much of my time to it as he did. I finished a drawing that I was very pleased with and showed it to my friend and returned with a backhanded compliment, "Not bad for catalogue work," he could have simply said nice job, he did it all the time. Love your channel!

I am glad you touched on this. We all ventured into the cnc world for various reasons. We all have our own story. We never criticize the painter for the brush they use. Without creativity and the skills we learned along the way, its just another tool that would just sit in the corner. To anyone reading this, rest assured, the haters wouldn't even know how to turn on the controller. Thanks for the straight shooting video Garrett!

I was in the Marines for 6 years. While a young PFC at Camp Pendleton I was ordered to the color guard for about 2 months. If you are on a Marine color guard, then yes, there are very specific rules about how to handle a flag. If you're making a piece of art like this, we all know where your heart and mind are. It's a very cool piece that evokes patriotism in a unique way. BTW- The view is from behind. So the girl in the carve is displaying the flag correctly. Some people are just wankers.

The more and more I watch you, I get more and more impressed. Those are very good points on how people wake up and choose violence for the day, it must be miserable, I just Block them. I seen something similar where a creator in a shop was using his phone as his monitor on self mode, when you do that the image is inverted. And people missed the whole video just to get on him about his flag looked to be hung wrong in the background. Some called him everything but a woodworker. Your teaching style works for me, the way you engage just clicks with my brain and I have learned more real world skills in this, from you than any other. The first machine I ever seen I ran for superflow. I was one of three in the cabinet shop in 2000 ish and we got a 4x8 shopsabre with vacuum and it blew me away, at that time I was just getting a home computer, so it was so cool to have the job of running it. I always wanted my own machine and been a kitchen carpenter for 30 years I knew my way around a shop, but they were unreachable. I had a career ending injury 18 months ago and said hell with it and bought one, used recovery time to learn it and I feel that stupid machine saved my ass from self destructive loathing. I came across your videos while in the hospital and I truly was inspired to get that machine as soon as i could. Thanks, for the you tube university education...really thanks.

You're absolutely right! I have been woodworking for 13 years. I have hand carved pieces with a chisels and been told by other people that I CNCed them when I didn't. In my experience the people that care about whether you carved it by hand, aren't willing to pay the price for things that are carved by hand and aren't willing to believe you did it anyways. Some people need to be contrary and wrong. I am new to CNCing. I see it as a useful tool to expand on my abilities as a wood worker and I am really enjoying learning about all of the technical things such as a down cutting bit not having fuzzies on the top surface and to not use them to bore holes unless I want to start a fire. I love all of this new knowledge. I appreciate every bit of what you are doing. Thank you.

"THANK YOU!!!" What you are talking about touches on so many fields. I have been in the IT field for over 20 years and have come across so many people who have this attitude that they are better than everyone else and will trash anyone they feel doesn't meet their level of skill. Many don't give new developers, devops, testers, or anyone else a chance. I try to encourage others in things I am skilled at. I don't give advice unless you ask, just like you mentioned, with the exception of when I am training someone, and even then I would never act like an a-hole and constantly berate them. When I watch a video I always look to see what or how I can do something better than I can right now, and there are a lot of areas where that helps me.

First off, thank you for your videos, they have been an enormous amount of help getting me started in CNC. I have been wood working for 30 years, and now have a second career as an IT person, so for me this was a perfect juxtaposition of two of my favorite things. That being said, it has still been a steep but very enjoyable learning curve. A CNC is just another tool, but one that gives you great precision and repeatability. I just don't understand people, most of whom would have no idea how to do this, who seem to think that they have been appointed the official deciders of what is "actual woodworking". All hobbies seem to have these self-appointed critics for some reason. I say embrace those who support you and just scroll on by and ignore the people want to tear you down.

Hey Garrett, speaking from a former Marine perspective your carving is perfectly fine in my book. The key which you can ask any former military person is the Stars are at the beginning of the way the wind flows through the flag (i.e. the stars are always starting at the front of your car with the flag flowing to the back). Love the design and people should be more encouraging versus criticizing. Life is too short to be so negative in your life, look at the good in all and embrace ALL our diversity and experience. My husband and I purchased a millright cnc to further his hobby making automata. We had no idea what we were in for..the amount of skill not only putting it together, but getting it to work is incredible. I am thankful we work well together and very thankful for what you have provided in your videos, without which we would not be cutting at this point. It is a skill, an art and a great deal of fun when it comes off the machine. We look forward to what lies ahead….

Been on a CNC for a year now and never looked back. It is an amazing journey and Garrett's videos helped so much. That flag reminds me of going to a friends house on a hot day by the pool and one of the ladies stood up, grabbed a flag towel to dry off and run in the house. I happened to snap a pic with the phone and carve it the next day. Take a fun day with friends and transfer the memory to CNC.

Full of themselves assholes, narcissist bastards that are out to make everyone else as miserable as they are. They are the ones who always have an opinion, they know best and will tell you how damn good they are, and are quick to pick out fault, but when it comes down to it they've either NEVER done it themselves OR they have an excuse why they don't do it. See it all the time. Strong work on the piece, Garrett. It really is a nice carve.

Hi Garrett, You're most welcome. It's really good to see there are many people that got behind you on this unfortunate incident to give you some moral support and to show you that not everyone is tarred with the same brush. Now, it's water under the bridge, and time to move on and continue doing what you do best. The Lady and the American flag actually looked really good, I would have been very happy if I had done that on my CNC machine. Talking of doing a 3D on my machine, I sent you a message regarding the open book 3D carve that you did a short while ago, hopefully, you can find a few minutes to have a look for me. If anyone else reads this message, Please continue to encourage and support Garrett. Regards, Michael

Thank You Garrett for making this video. Our church was celebrating 50 years of getting a new roof, I decided to engrave on my CNC machine some of the old roof tiles which I salvaged. I had the name of the church correct but was told that the cross I engraved was wrong. The church is in Scotland and we have many different interpretations of the cross. According to the so called expert the cross was wrong but in my eyes it was correct. Until I saw your video I was going to throw them all in the skip, now they are going to be handed in on the day of the anniversary . Thank you again for giving the confidence to go ahead . please stay safe. Bill M8-) Scotland

Thank you sir! I am, at ground zero of learning to CNC. I mean REALLY at ground zero! I am going to learn CNC first by building my 'own' custom CNC machine; my hopes are that I will more intimately learn by building my own vs. buying a ready-made CNC machine. So, my hat off to you! I am 62 and know absolutely nothing about CAD/CAM software or CNC'ing but I do have a basic understanding about the X,Y,Z thinking that goes into this art. Before I run on any further, I'll just say thank for your straight forward no bullshit zero tolerance way of doing things.
