That's what I'm planning to do. Build the bare minimum that would allow me to machine better parts for the next. I'm even considering building some DC motors from scratch to see how that would work out.

I have to make an observation about the DC motors. DC motors produce EMF that opposes the applied voltage when they start to run faster. This reduces the current and consecutively the torque at higher speed. So this limits the speed of the machine while the motors are actually run far below their thermal limit. If you end up deciding that the motor can handle 1.6A of continuous current, you can use L298s with some sort of current limiting device and you can set the current limiter at 1.6A. Then you can use much higher voltage on the motor. By applying more voltage, some of it counters the EMF and still there is enough to keep the motor current at nominal value. The rest of the voltage is blocked by the current limiting device so the motor is always below its thermal limit.
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
First of all I wanted to keep the electronics simple, thus I am operating the deveces with constant voltage. If it all runs fine, I will have a closer look at ways to optimize the machine speed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi! I am wondering: instead of cutting aluminum encoder disk maybe you can print it on transparent foil on laser or jet printer? The teeth of the disc are black and gaps are transparent. Than glue it on the acrylic gear, divide the sensor to halves and mount them on both sides so the sensor "is looking" through the gear and sensor disc... Just to mention it :-). It is, maybe, easier to make... But again, one big thank for your effort! The videos are so good that I decided to translate one by one of all your videos.
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
...if you think that would be better, you can try it. You must ensure that the IR light is effectively blocked so that you get a HIGH signal. Use a high resolution print to get good opacity.

What you think about dc plus encoder or step motor? What is better?
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 4 года назад
DC motor plus encoder is the safest way to move a machine. You have a closed loop system that can detect whenever something goes wrong. Bipolar stepper motors are more simple to control from the electronics as well as the software side. The choice is yours.

Can I use linear encoder instead of rotary? to manufacture the cnc. thanks
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 4 года назад
You need a high resolution linear encoder to get nearly the same results as with this simple rotary encoder setup. I have done a couple of experimentation with an encoder from an old printer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YfBkddVJksw.html

Hi Norbert. I want build 2 axis hot wire CNC. How i can delete Z axis in program? And second question- i use arduino nano and on fast motor speed a have many lost steps. How many steps per second i can receive without lost steps?
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
You could simply ignore the Z axis. With no sensors connected and not commands for moving the Z motor, that part of software will never be executed (I guess). The number of steps processed by the Arduino depends on the software running on it. CNC v3.2 processes approximately 300 pulses per second per motor without loosing steps. I will do further investigations about the maximum speed, soon.

@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
You rarely find stepper motors in old printers and that's why I have chosen DC motors for the first drive configuration. Nonetheless, I already ordered bipolar stepper motors to show how to use those drives. Be patient, there is still a lot to be done (and demonstrated in videos) with the DC motors before switching to the steppers. Stay tuned!

Something like that would work in principle, but my gears are 5mm thick, thus they won't fit in the sensors.
@yannkitson116
@yannkitson116 7 лет назад
Could you not make the pinion and the gear from coloured HDPE melted in an oven to form a slab and cut it to size on the CNC while cutting the profile? I guess you only need the tooth profile to be 5 mm and not the whole disc.
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
Yann Kitson For making a single machine, considerations like that are from low priority. Reducing the number of parts is an option for volume production (something I I won't start in the near future).

If you put the optical sensors at different positions around the sensor wheels, wouldn't that allow you to use much smaller gaps and with that much smaller sensor wheels?

Is it possible using a diy servo like yours in 3d printer? Can you tell me what software should I use? My reason change stepper with servo is cheaper. I like your videos btw.
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
Whenever you build your own hardware you will have to write your own software to control your machine. I will try to implement G-code in my software after making the hardware and electronicr run fine. Yet, I haven't sorted out what kind of open source software exists for CNC machines or 3D printers and how to modify it for my servo driven machine.
@robbyjonsen4406
@robbyjonsen4406 7 лет назад
HomoFaciens reprap.org/wiki/RepRap_Options the link explain everything about reprap 3d printer including the software for creating g code and firmware for arduino to read the g code and move the stepper. I hope someone can help change the stepper with servo in the firmware code.
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
Yes, the RepRap wiki is a great knowledge base for any type of computer controlled machines. I doubt if the changes will fit in the Arduino firmware (it's time critical). I will try that sometime, but I guess I will have to find a workaround (maybe using two Arduinos - one running grbl and one running the control loops of the motors). Time will tell...
@sanderruijters5961
@sanderruijters5961 7 лет назад
Those steppers are controlled with two instructions I think, a "direction" and a "step". If you could make a seperate servo control loop (maybe using an arduino) that could work with these instructions it would be possible to use a servo
@wefyb2
@wefyb2 7 лет назад
This isn't strictly true. The Marlin RepRap firmware is very comprehensive, and has inbuilt options for hundreds of different configurations. Part of this includes DC motors, physical switches v optical, hundreds of different display etc. It's very much complete.

I thought to add a chainwheels on axis and make holder for old drills and connect them with chain so can move machine on joystick and faster when necessary. Now when I saw your video I thought maybe is possible to use printer encoder tape with sensor so arduino knows it exact position in 0.1mm accuracy and then upload code to arduino to make it a CNC machine.. Do you think thats possible?

@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 2 года назад
I haven't done anything on the software since publishing the video series about this CNC. It is definitely not perfect but worked for me. The software is still in an experimental state and MAX_arduino_buffersize is a value not in use. It was meant to speed up the data transfer to the Arduino, but didn't have a huge impact so I commented that out in the source code. The sleep you have set is an indication that your computer is obviously faster than the one I was using. Sleep prevents commands from being discarded due to a too high incoming byte stream.

@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
I don't own an Arduino Mega, thus I can't grant that it will work without changes. It also works with 5V logic and has enough pins, so it should work. You must eventually change the pin configuration to have the PWM inputs of the H bridges on PWM pins on your Arduino. Whenever you try to modify a machine, you might stumble over details, but that's what makes you understand how things work...
@Zaratustrov

I see. Thank you. I also have one dc servo motor for my testing and it has magnetic encoder with 6 wires coming out. ) I took a look on the board and wires are GND (I think it's output signal ground), output3 output2 and output1, +5 and GND again. It should be quadrature type but it's not clear to me about 3 signal outs and if i can make it talk with arduino. )
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
It has very likely 3 magnetic sensors (hall sensors), thus it isn't a quadrature encoder. One hall sensor at a time is high and that enables you to detect a step and the direction of the step such as: 010 001 100 or in the opposite direction: 010 100 001

Hello, does the software need to calculate acceleration ? or not ? because there already encoder to prevent miss step. I want to make this awesome CNC too, and able to use my software github/ryannining/karyacnc on it.

The software I am using ignores acceleration calculations, yet. I might add this in a future version, but with the low overall machine speed it doesen't make a real difference. Of course you can modify what ever software you want to run with this machine. Hard- and software of my machine are open source: homofaciens.de/technics-machines-cnc-v3-2-1_en.htm

explain why you're using Linux
@HomoFaciens
@HomoFaciens 7 лет назад
Because it's freely available, you (and all people of the world) own the source code and you can do what ever you want with this great OS. Compare that to the restricted rules of your operating system.

please organize video "CNC programming on Linux"
@HomoFaciens

There is no need for a special video. There are Gigabytes of information on how to install Linux (I recommend Ubuntu for beginners). After that, follow the installation instructions of my software. I will change the software in the comming weeks to make it process G-Code. Many CAD programs can export that file type. Stay tuned!

His content is great but his voice and accent is sooo annoying.
