Women can play on the men's team if they are good enough because the Men's team does not discriminate. What the women are really asking for is discrimination. They want to be treated differently and preferentially because they are women.

While I agree, in this case, this new collective bargaining agreement between the women and men is really a just desserts for the men. When the women's team made their frivolous lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation, it was the men's team who supported the women's team's arguments (despite them being worthless). So yeah, the men's team deserve to give away half of their winnings for being idiots and supporting a frivolous suit.

That all starts with the word *"Deserve".* I worked with handicapped kids when I was 13 & their handicaps were caused from a variety of circumstances: Some were from drowning, some from parental abuse, some from birth accidents, some genetics, some from medications, but in my very young age I remember thinking that none of them "deserved" it. That word always bothered me. Later on when I'd started a family, we didn't allow that word and replaced "earn" for it. But it has become VERY popular. Ppl throw it around. "I *deserve* a good husband", and, "I *deserve* a week at a spa". REALLY? Why? What makes you any more special than anyone else? Your word is just as appropriate, though it seems to be newer. I think what's gone on here is that they know they're not being discriminated against by the US federation but they're trying to get as much as they can because they're not getting paid as much as the men at club level. It's a lot easier to target the federation than their clubs. Their clubs can fire them, contract or no contract. But the US women's team is the most successful in the game. If they dropped all their best players, they'd be stuffed. While a male player in the English Premier League receives at least £80,000 per week, in the WSL the best players receive around £20,000 a year. That's the kind of thing I think they're actually angry about.

Previously, the men's contract was more performance based, making their pay based on how far they advance in a tournament. They were taking a risk, but that's what THEY wanted. In taking the riskier contract, if they lost early, they would make less than a guarantee contract, but if they advanced to a certain point, then they would be making much more than a guarantee contract. Which is what made the initial lawsuit wrong in my opinion. The women decided PRIOR TO THE SEASON that they wanted to guarantee contract and the men wanted a performance based contract. Then after seeing how much the men made, the woman complained citing gender discrimination, when in fact, it was the way they chose the structure their own contracts with guarantees to lower the overall pay.

What's crazy is that the US holds on to young players too long. Which stubts the players growth and potential to the detriment of the sport in the US. Football is a world game.

It'd be interesting to see, if the men started out performing the women if they would give up half of their pay.

The womens tourney is seen as a side show by most of the world, where the mens teams are a huge deal. If the women want more money grow interest world wide and help other countries build strong teams.

This is on top of already having guaranteed pay and benefits that the men's team doesn't get. Wow. How is this equal? The men's team should forfeit every game for a few years, bottoming their revenue to nothing and sit back while getting paid half the revenue that the women's team brings in because that's "equal pay". The men would still get paid something, but the women would get paid less than the dollar amount of the 2.5% they get right now. Then, when the women's team cries that it's not fair, they can be offered to a deal where the women get 100% of their revenue and the men get 100% of their revenue, regardless of the amount. Then they'll understand what's fair.

The men acquiesce because money earned from national team play is a fraction of what they actually make. OTOH, the women earning from national team play is the biggest portion of what they earn. The tip for that table should go to the server. Directly because they were the one that serviced that table. Now some places the server's tips go into a pool, and its divided among the other servers. Thats unfair because a bad server with 1 table shouldnt be getting a portion from a good server that did 10 tables. They had no interaction. That's because those fighting for "equality" are fighting for equal outcome not equal opportunity, if they weren't they would realize the fight is over they've won. However they don't realize that equal outcome means you have to take away people from of choice to get the pretty statistics that they want especially when you are dealing with numbers as large as the US population. That or you have make laws that either decide how much money you make in a certain position by discrimination based on sex/age/skin color/etc. so that all the groups get equal payouts which won't work since the calculations will come up with a different payout depending on which reductionist characteristic of a person is given more weight. Or you have to just straight up socialism where every single person paid the exact same per year whether they work 100+hrs a week or 0hrs a week, but that won't work because of that's the case then nobody will do any work because it doesn't affect how much they get paid. If nobody works then nothing gets done. Equality of outcome just does not work and honestly should not work. Equality of opportunity is true freedom as it means everyone has the same OPPORTUNITIES and the only thing that differentiates people is the choices they make.

The problem is that with such a contract the balance of payout means in the hypothetical case of an excellent performance, you make less money with guaranteed pay and benefits than if you only had a performance based pay. That's the origin of the issue, the men's team picked performance based because they are at least decent enough to get a very good wage out of the performance payments, plus their other income. The women picked a guaranteed pay because they expected to suck big time, lose a lot, and in that case a guaranteed pay means much more money. It's only when the women outperformed their own expectations that they realized they could've had much more money if they had the performance based contract, so they raised a stink in order to get even more money. And hey, it worked.

In a under 15 year old boys team they aren't 15 , they are 14. Been to a lot of under 15 year old boys games here in the uk and they are brilliant and highly skilled and go for it. Remember if they are successful a career in a European top team beckons. Also under 15 does not mean you have to be 14 , seen some really good 13 year olds making these teams. These teams would destroy any women's team easily.

Except that you missed out some rather important details. Clubs like United and City often play their women's home games in much smaller grounds that are often more out of the way for fans. United play at Leigh Sports Village which is a little bit of a trek for many, who could otherwise use public transport to get to Old Trafford. When United played Everton last season at Old Trafford, a game I was at, the club only opened up the lower tiers of the stands and it was, at the time, a record attendance for a WSL game. Between 15,000 and 20,000. Since then, that record's since been smashed several times. The record for a WSL game is now over 47,000 at The Emirates. Still well below capacity, but impressive for what is still a relatively new competition. And WSL attendances have quadrupled since the Euros. 44,000 watched City's women play United at home on 11 December. While the speed and raw power isn't there in the women's game, it's come along a lot in the past 10 years. And, TBH, it's better than the men's game in some sense. Just seems more honest. I actually suspect that's why they really introduced VAR - to stop players like Neymar trying to make out they were a bicycle wheel. I noticed that he wasn't up to his old antics at the WC.

Yeah, that's kind of the problem. Until you start investing in the advertising and kids playing, you don't get people watching or popular support, long term, for the sport.

If you’ve reached that point, money probably isn’t your main concern. It’s representing your country. I see what you’re trying to say, but international soccer isn’t, I’d say, where almost all players make their money, especially for a team at our level.

FIFA eligiblity hinges on which countries a player holds nationality with. There are some situations and exceptions that allow players to switch countries, but the vast majority of players are only eligible to play for the country in which they were born and/or raised in.

I think the craziest tipping point would be if there’s another cycle the men don’t qualify for the WC, and the women now have to share 50% of their lower pool without any men’s money offsetting it.

@@Roqueforte wrong, every country has it's own eligibility rules top become Naturalised as a citizen. However once you have played a competitive match for any Nation you are basically stuck there. This doesn't include youth teams. There are a number of players who played for England U19's then German Under 21's and chose England as their Full National team and vie versa.

I don't mean to be too picky about words, but the current overwhelming emphasis on subjectivity and "feels" is one of the imbalances undermining society in my best estimate (speaking as a person who is very personally oriented towards feelings and communication - but also a STEM person who knows that there are domains where a good impedance match with reality is more important to sustaining society than subjective impressions and reactions). If you want to help women BE more successful in some given aspect, then hold them to equal standards with men in that regard, rather than lowering the standard. Provide encouragement in the form of "you can do this when you try" rather than, say, pretending that somebody is better than they are in order to build up a false and unearned sense of their progress. Allow them to make mistakes and learn from it, rather than covering for them or trying to blame the wrong person. Treat them as potential equals and give them an equal chance without prejudice (rather than as automatic equals whether or not they really are, or even put in the effort). Focus on equal opportunity rather than forced equal outcomes. Root out real discrimination rather than helping weaponize any accusation of such, justified or not. Treat them with respect and expect the same in return. Encourage earned respect rather than entitlement. And it's no surprise that the same is true if you want to help man be more successful. What they miss is that society (imperfectlly) rewards those who make more important contributions not just as "a moral good", but also in order to keep the society functioning for everyone's sake. Degrading science and engineering because "the people taking on those difficult subjects are no more morally deserving than a day care provider and probably less so" will in the end boomarang to the detriment of poor and rich people, in a highly technological society which is leveraged out way beyond the carrying capacity of the land without high tech. We are living in a democracy where many of the voters have very little clue what is required to keep the system from collapsing on itself. They take for granted that it's "somebody's" job to keep jumping in to keep things running for them, and their own task is just to allocate the products of that society in a way that feels better subjectively; keeping the flow going is somebody else's problem (somebody whose power or rewards we can take away without *moral* qualms). One question I ask myself is what the signs would be, of living in a deteriorating meritocracy. Of course all meritocracies are imperfect, but they can change for the better or the worse. What would we expect to see if there are increasing numbers of people being paid to handle jobs they are less capable of doing than in past times? This doesn't have to be a nuclear reactor accident, or an airline which cannot schedule its staff (tho it could be) - it could just be that the support person on the phone doesn't understand how their company's computer system works very well, and fails to fix problems that a more capable person could. And to what degree is that different than what we see now? It's a question to be answered slowly, and as objectively as possible - rather than spooking at figments of our imagination. I mean, if you actively want to believe that competence is going down, you will find that. But if you are not trying to fit a narrative, what do you see?
