In today's video I am joined by Allissia, a subscriber who won a chance to come forage with me. The seas were quite rough, so we stuck close to shore and cooked a Cajun style mussel boil! Allissia's channel is here / walkerallissia
Thank you Kevin 😊 I can wait to do this again ru-vid.com. This is my channel its up and coming so we're working on making it better so please come join the Journey
You're so cool! Your outro made me tear up. I always encourage my friends and family to try foraging, too. It really helps when I gift them truffle oils, teas, or make little food kits with dried mushrooms for them. It's fun, it's exercise, and you get a bunch of healthy treats! :)
Thanks for watching and for your service! I truly do appreciate the sacrifice you and many like you have given so that folks like me did not have to fight and had the time and freedom could cultivate such a skill set.
I decided to drop a comment to tell you guys this channel is a gold mine. So much knowledge in any one of these videos! It was an insta sub all the way from Portugal. Thank you!
Awesome video, Dr. Kev! Love seeing you have fun with others and enjoying a highlight of your year. Excited to hear more about your tours out in Northern California!
Great video Kevin, and Congratulations Allissia !!!! So nice to see you out enjoying yourself with Kevin. Can't wait to check out your channel and will look froward to some fishing videos of yours. Kevin WE Love U and your the best, wish I could go. 💗🎣🌻🌟👍
Hey Dr Kev, what are some tips for transporting the catch home? Bucket or ice chest? On/in ice or just water salt vs fresh? Do they need to be purged? When harvesting mussels can you wear gloves to protect the hands/fingers?
@@josephsaeteurn9158 it depends on their interpretation of the law/rules, the weather and water are very cold and some of the mussels have sharp edges wearing gloves for protection. No tools allowed, the gloves give you enhanced gripping ability thus falls under "tool" usage.
@@SpamMusubi308 i've been using gloves forever and i dont have any problems with DFG. i dont know where you get your "tool" usage as using gloves. you must have a scale for sure even if u plan to get just a few.. that i was approach before on.
I'd like to meet up with you for a foraging video as long as the part of the "Bay Area" you're in is the part north, not south of San Francisco, I live in Humboldt and have an old car that doesn't really love the hills of San Fransisco.
Hi Dr Kevin, I was wondering if you had to clean the mussels in like cornmeal or whatever? I’ve seen some videos where ppl did that with some kind of shellfish. I guess what I’m asking is, you can just pick, scrub, and cook them? Great episode thanks so much. (John from California)
John, there will always be some risk of sand with any shellfish that is wild and lives in/near sand (unlike farmed oysters for instance which are grown on racks above the sand to minimize this. None of the mussels we had were sandy, but I always caution my guests wo attend my "mussels in the Moonlight" and "The Clam Connection" tours that they should chew softly just in case. If you keep them in a bucket with sea water and an aerator (like a bait bucket from Dick's sporting goods) over night, they will likely have less potential sand. The bottom line is chew softly and eat them right there on the spot as fresh as they get!
Like Ace below stated. Nope, but it would not hurt. I always advise to chew softly with wild shellfish just in case. If you choose to purge them, get a bait bucket with an aerator from Dicks sporting goods and just leave them in sea water overnight.
I guide in the Bay Area! You can email me at catchncookca@gmail for more info on what foraging I am guiding in the area. This weekend is the last low tide weekend of steamer clam season (for instance). - Cheers
A friend's dad who was not much older than me, and in good health, died of Covid recently. This is a very real pandemic. If it makes people more comfortable, I will always accommodate.
im fully vaccinated and my friends are also but we still wear mask when within a few feet.. its probably nothing but set our mind to do this wherever we go.
