Thank you, I learnt something today. I have been sewing for 50+ years and had never been told or shown how to turn at a corner as well as you have explained. Making sure that the needle goes past bottom centre. The times that I have been left frustrated by skipped stitches I can't tell you. When you say that this is a basic skill I felt so stupid. I love You Tube for this very reason. You are never too old to learn something new. (And HELPFUL). Thank you again.

Thank you, thank you, Al Bane! Believe it or not, I received my new Cobra Class 4 one day prior to your posting this most informative and useful instructional video! I'd say that it not only complements Steve's video, but exceeds it in many ways (don't get me wrong; I love Steve dearly). More detail, better video, easier to understand. Simply superb! I know I'll be viewing it and taking careful notes for a long time to come. Gratefully, Michelle.

I like that you added a list of every teaching point below the video. I refer to this several times a day and sometimes you just want to go straight to the point you need help on. This list is a great list to have for reference. Thank you, Al Bane.

I have a Cowboy 4500 that I just bought which had a very bad instruction manual which is hard to see. This video was fantastic as the 4500 is close to the same and I was able to follow this video[s instructions to oil, thread and finally adjust my machine which was pulling loops. Fantastic instruction recommended to anyone who has a leather sewing machine. Thank You

Great instructional Video! I picked up mine in Feb 2013. I spent the whole weekend trying to get it to stitch and work right. I bugged Steve on that following Monday, with his encouragement I finally got my tension right. I wish I had your video back then - Steve’s video is good but yours is much more clearer to understand. I also bought his Cobra 5110 Post this is a great machine as well. You should buy this Post Machine and do an instructional video as well ;-)

Very impressive at 8:27, seeing a motor turn the machine that slowly yet still have enough torque for the needle to penetrate the work is a key factor when deciding on a machine.

Excellent video! I bought a Ferdco Pro 2000 seven years ago, and am still learning the finer points of it. The machine threads differently but most of the other adjustments are spot on, and this video made me aware of some oiling points that I have been missing. It's a wonder I haven't had trouble! The manual that came with my machine is one of those line drawing illustrations with arrows that are impossible to tell whether they are going up and down or sideways. Someone should think about translating these manuals into REAL English! Thanks a million.

Hi Al, I seen most or your videos and very informative especially to the rookies like me, Question, I have a 441 clone, I most use 207 tread, one of my issues is that some of my sewing thread has more wax than others as I use more than one color, I normally sew 2 layers of 4 to 5 OZ, in total 9 to 10 OZ, the issue I'm having it is that the tread that has more wax does not have enough friction on the bobbin plate, even when I close the screw all the way (for the thinnest thread) I can see the locking stitching is more to the top, even when the 1st and secondary tension disk on the machine are all the way on the loose position, I have tested other threads with less wax and have no issues as there is more friction upon passing by the bobbing side plate, is there a trick somewhere that you know that may help, the easiest way will be getting sewing thread with less wax but will like to use the spools I already have. Any help will be appreciated...

Get a new bobbin tension spring preset tight from The Leather Machine co. Then you can tighten the top tension devices to match. This way you have some latitude with the adjustments when swapping thread.

Aaron George no tje serrated feed dog will leave marks on your leather. The Leather Machine Company offers a smooth face feed dog and presser foot system.

The Cobra Class 4 is a lock stitch machine. typically lock stitch machines use a needle and a hook to create a lockstitch. the lock stitch is typically found in the center of the material. the positioning can be influenced by thread tension. too much top tension will produce loops on top. when we see loops on top we are actually seeing the lock stitch rising to the surface of the workpiece.
@WillPower1818
@WillPower1818 11 лет назад
Does this machine have the positioning system? Mine does so I'm wondering if your 90 degree angles and back tacking techniques are still necessary if the machine has EPS?

Hi Al, I love watching your instructional videos on sewing. I noticed on one of your videos that you sometimes lift the needle from the work piece when you back tack and sometimes you dint lift the needle all of the way. Which technique have you found to work best? Thank you
@albaneforleather
@albaneforleather 6 лет назад
Chris S it depends who you ask. Some people believe that you can cycle i Reverse at any point. I find it's less problematic to cycle the reverse lever with a needle just passed the bottom dead center.

Has anyone experienced an issue where the center foot and presser foot rub? The enbtire center foot is offset slightly to the right and when using the double toe or right toe presser foot, the center foot slightly rubs. This is regardless of how it is rotated.

Mr Bane is it normal for the belt to twist when working? I get it to fall in correctly but after a full turn it twists
@albaneforleather
@albaneforleather 2 года назад
They do that once in awhile. It could be that your machine is not aligned directly above the speed reducer. Check and see that the pulleys are lined up perpendicular to each other. Sometimes a belt will break in that way and there's no fixing it. It doesn't hurt anything. Unless it makes the hand wheel jump when the belt flips over. That could affect your control of the work piece. Basically there's nothing wrong unless you feel that it's a problem.

FYI the speed setting is the motor rpm in hundreds of rpms, so 20 = 2000 rpm and 13 = 1300 rpms S1 = start speed in percentage of full speed 10 = 10% of full speed 90 = 90% of full speed S2 = is motor direction don't change it if your machine is running fine S3 = maximum motor speed S4/S5 i believe is setting for the electronic positioner and need not be adjusted. keep in mind the machine comes from the factory set at 2000 rpms on the motor speed. Depending on the servo motor you could have a max speed of 3800 or 4500 rpms. there is no mention of a max speed that I could find in the manual. I'd highly advise not exceeding 2000 rpm. As I don not believe the machine was designed with that rate of speed in mind. this machine is a tractor not a sports car.

This might be a stupid question...but will someone please explain what he means when he says Top Dead Center and Bottom Dead Center??
@albaneforleather
@albaneforleather Год назад
When the needle goes all the way to the top just before it starts coming back down. That is top dead center. The inverse is true, when the needle goes all the way to the very bottom right before it starts coming up. That is bottom dead center.
@beckichan3
@beckichan3 Год назад
@@albaneforleather Thank you sooo much! I've watched this video at least 100 times
@albaneforleather
@albaneforleather Год назад
When the needle travels to the very top of the stroke that is top dead center. Like 12:00 on a clock face. One second past 1:00 is now passed top dead center. The same thing with 6:00 or bottom dead center. So when referencing the position of the needle typically we refer to a quarter inch past top dead center which is the moment the hook releases the needle thread. At this point we can remove the workpiece because a needle thread is no longer being held by the hook

I have a question. Phil M. Kelton Jr. of Dragon Backbone says that his Cobra class 4 sewing machine has a needle on top and bottom. Is this true? His claim is that his Cobra class 4 sewing machine: "ties a knot inside each hole punched superior every time. One needle on top and one on the bottom does the magic."

the Cobra class 4 sewing machine is a single needle compound feed machine. the type of machine that you are referring to is called an awl machine.

I have one and have had many issues with set up, tensioning, getting the stitches to be correct. This is not a JUKI, as I have owned a Juki 562 for 30 years and it has been flawless. This is a China made machine and has been quite troublesome for me. Yes, Steve has been helpful, but I cannot get anyone to my shop to set this machine up properly. I have already had to return one Head as the bobbin pickup and timing were off. A major hassle.

You failed to mention that it was operator error on your part. And you happened to break the same thing twice, all the years leather machine co has been in business only 3 of those have broke and you happened to break it twice. Leather machine co repairs juki, artisan, and multiple other machines, before becoming the owner Steve has been a mechanic for 52 years, he made cobras so that they could be just as good as jukis, you only pay for the name when it comes to juki, they also cost $7,000 the cobras only cost $3,000 yet still outperform juki most of the time, Steve has fixed thousands of jukis over the years.
