@@noahboddee5238 How not? Was it explained as a synthoid in the comics, ensuing seasons, or something like that? On the TV show, thought we saw it as it showed his backstory during the trial.
Yeah, that was HUGE to us back in the day. You never saw that kind of epic-scale shift and resolution. We were so used to shows going on and on until they were cancelled without a finale. This was seriously deep and disturbing shit to us back then.
They was Brawn, Prowl, Ratchet, & Ironhide when the Decepticon’s hijacked the Ship. Then Windcharger & Wheeljack during the Battle of Autobot City, then Optimus Prime, then Ultra Magnus (briefly but was brought back which makes me wonder why couldn’t the others have be saved as well, they’re Machines they can be fixed too.) Where were Superion, Defensor & Omega Supreme? But Several reborn Megatron was made into Galvatron, Thundercracker, Shrapnel, Kickback, became Scourge & the Sweeps, Bombshell & Skywarp became Cyclonus & his Armada. Starscream was blasted into space dust.
How hard core was it? Two armies fighting each other and the only person who died was a drug king pin who ODed by accidentally falling into a vat of his own drugs?
It is a shame he didn't live, Chris Latta would be a favorite among the touring circuits of voice actors for 80's toons, especially Transformers and GI Joe. His voice was easily the most unique and he did two of the most iconic characters ever. Most of the voice actors didn't know how much they were appreciated and loved until about 10 years ago, shame Chris never got to know how much he meant to people.
Believe it or not he was also the original voice for Mr Burns and Moe on The Simpsons - Two completly different voices compared to the beautiful high-pitched one he used for Starscream and Cobra.
Mitch Fletcher OKAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION. I HAD NO IDEA THAT HE WAS STRUGGLING WITH ALCOHOLISM. HOPEFULLY ALL IS WELL WITH MR. LATTA TO THIS DAY. For future reference - sharing knowledge is always great but the caps lock was totally unnecessary. God I felt I was as getting yelled and shot at, all at the same time, lol.
I felt so sorry for Cobra Commander. I watched the G.I. Joe movie again recently and i actually shed some tears over his mutation. I didn't know those scenes were going to hit me that hard. When he's instructing Roadblock where to go "that's it, straight ahead the mountain path" that part especially was heartbreaking for me😢
@@youknowkbbaby yes he did, but it was still sad for me seeing him in that condition. When Cobra Commander was saying "useless all useless", that was heartbreaking.
Cobra Commander is a perplexing figure. He was able to rise to the highest level of an entire army, yet simultaneously no one ever seemed to follow his orders. Nevertheless, he kept delivering them with the utmost pompousness. Bravo, Cobra Commander. My hat is off to you.
I loved how one of the comics had Cobra Commander face Serpentor, and after CC tossed him his exploding mask, CC tells him the following: "You were engineered with such potential, Serpentor, but you lack the most important DNA of them all................MINE!" And kicks his ass right off the cliff!
Originally in the comics he was to be drafted into the Vietnam War, but his brother took his place. He became a car salesman and his brother came back. He was messed up and became an abusive alcoholic and died in a drunk driving accident. Cobra sworn to destory America and the world after it.
I have to admit that at that point I was feeling sorry for Cobra Commander for how they did him. He by far has the best cartoon villain voice I can think of. R.I.P. Chris Latta.
does anyone remember that the cobra commander was in a Transformers episode? He played a consultant to a terrorist organization that turned the Autobots into humans. By the end of the episode that Autobots took down the terrorist organization and the cobra commander said " oh well they don't make terrorist organizations the way the used too. COBRA!!!!!!!!"
This movie creeped me the fuck out when I was young. It gave me nightmares. Back then, I never would’ve imagine Hasbro doing it like this. The whole Cobra LA and turning Cobra Commander into a snake, that was trippy. Chris Latta R.I.P. he made Cobra Commander iconic.
Actually in the comics which most hardcore fans considered cannon he just resembled a crazy hippie type with long hair in a pony tail, stoner glasses and handle bar mustache and was a ex us government agent that went completely rogue. I kind of like that origin much better since it wasn't very predictable and when you actually think about it made more sense.
Ironic. Cobra Commander is physically turned into an actual cobra for punishment. Also ironic that if he hadn't been punished that way Serpentor would have won his fight, and Falcon wouldn't have stopped the spores.
cmann58 He was a very troubled man. His co-workers had to bail him out several times. But he wasn't a bad person, and his fellow actors still miss him today.
@@CardboardSliver One of his fellow voice actors on this series and Transformers attributes his death to this rising stardom. He once cryptically lamented on Latta's death by saying "Hollywood tends to devour its own young."
I watched this only ONCE in my life 20 years ago, just an 8 years old kid and somehow NEVER forget the scene from 1:50 and everything that followed that moment, he turning into a real cobra and all his suffer and screams. Not lying, only watched ONCE in my life, was so hardcore that it never came out of my head haha
I always loved that CC's faceplate was a solid hunk of metal with circuitry. Therefore it could be speculated that what he was seeing (perhaps some holographic video) wasn't the truth (natural vision) and therefore a method of control. Deep...
I know it's late to respond, but, considering his face was a mass of eyeballs I have to wonder if they were functional and he could see out of them. Maybe the circuitry delivered different video feeds to different eyes, allowing him to see regularly from his normal two eyes and maybe infra red from the another set, and other wavelengths to the others.
Always felt sympathy for Cobra commander. Always so misunderstood and mistreated by the useless Serpentor. far as I was concerned, this movie ended the franchise. R.I.P. Cobra Commander.
3:44 Yesss oh yessss..... I've been looking for that clip for awhile. My favorite CC line from the movie: "Men may rule, but serpents never!" The Cobra Commander - Roadblock bromance was great lol. And the end to this video, masterpiece! 😅
I'm usually all for bad guys getting their comeuppance, but I don't dig seeing Cobra Commander going out like that. I know he later becomes human again somehow, but still. Harsh.
Human!? the dude was a serpent man in this animated version in the movie he was a noble of some reptilian race who accidentily got mutated by an experiment hence his many eye so much as a disgruntled car sales man in the toy backstory
@@number3729 They made a series around 90 or 92 that continues after some time has passed. After getting dumped by Destro, Baroness and Nagahide used science, a recording of monks chanting and the power of caveman wizardry were able to turn C.C. into a snakeman.
Wow.. the wonderful days of being a kid and watching this like it was the best thing that happened to me. This movie and the cartoon transformers was the best. But the opening scene of G.I joe was the best! Cobraaa COBRAAA cobraaa COBRAAA
I feel like the movie was made by people who didn't know anything about Cobra. The season prior to the movie ended with Cobra Commander moving to assassinate serpentor and the final episode of the season revealed that every member of Cobra was tired of serpentor and had joined a secret society to depose him in favor of Cobra Commander. suddenly in the movie, everyone hates the commander and loves serpentor
+babysinclairfan Just to clarify, only a few were shown to be on Cobra Commander's side while others were tired. I think it was Destro, Firefly, and Storm Shadow on the side of Cobra Commander in that episode, while Mind bender was still sucking up to Serpentor. As you mentioned there was a disconnect with the movie and that final episode. I believe if the movie had not happened the show was going to be CC taking Cobra over again.
1980Triumph I think during the episode, Serpentor commented that everyone was missing from the base.Idk, I have to rewatch the episode to be sure. But even dr Mindbender complains that Serpentor is becoming bratty. Before that, he had nothing but respect for Serpentor.
+babysinclairfan You're right, Mindbender did complain but he wasn't on the side of the rebellion, it was really Cobra Commander with the ones I mentioned. I think they would have explored this a little more if the show had continued. You're still right, they totally went into selling out the Commander in the movie when the last bit had people tired of Serpentor.
Think I read once that if there had been a season 3, the twins would have been in control of Cobra, Sepentor done away with, and at the end, CC shown to have been behind the twin's operation as a partially mutated half man half snake type of creature.
This movie was amazing when I was a kid, even if a little bit scary at points. But now, as a 44 year old, it's actually kinda traumatizing. Am I the only one who feels that way?
You aren't .seeing cobra commander gets DE-EVOLVED into a snake ABOMINATION was truly eye opening. This is one of the few cartoons that dealt with insanity. As cobra commander mutates more and more into that freaking THINGY you can almost feel his sanity slip away. It's tangible. That's why it stuck with you. I'm 34 and I still get jeebiesfrom watching this.
@@fredricorosenfield9976 Yes, the more I think about it, this cartoon had some really disturbing moments throughout. How'd they get away with all that in the 80s, I wonder.
@@fredricorosenfield9976 Indeed. I remember when I was a kid and saw the part when Cobra Commander had his accident and grew all those extra eyes, I was really creeped out by it. The part where he is turned into the snake is almost as creepy (especially since he still has all those extra eyes when his mask finally falls off), but I also thought it was sad, even for a bad guy. I'm not sure who thought such a weird (and frankly disturbing) subplot would be appropriate for a children's cartoon/children's movie, but they must have been smoking "something" when they came up with it....the comic book's origin of human Cobra Commander was so much better...and it wasn't creepy or gross!
Well, don't feel bad about Cobra Commander. Later on when DIC got around,he was brought back to human form thanks to one person you didn't count on - the Baroness. :)
I now remember I as a kid I was constantly saying "I was wunsssse a man...wunsssee a man!!" with a deliberate hiss for an entire month. I'm sure I drove everybody around me crazy
I basically destroyed a VHS with this movie on. That's how many times I watched this movie, at certain scenes I had to pause and roll through them otherwise the casette would be stuck. This was my first and only G.I. Joe animation.
@@cobracommander6522 Maybe instead of replacing you Mindbender could’ve spliced your DNA with all those Great Leaders of history that created Serpentor. Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Attila the Hun, Philip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler, Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Grigori Rasputin, Montezuma, Geronimo, Eric the Red, Sun Tzu & Egyptian General Xanuth Amon-Toth. Golobulus was a servant for The Chaos Bringer, Unicron.
Naw. Got to disagree. I just can't see a used car salesmen hissing all over the place and SOMEHOW becoming a terrorist. Al Bundy just jumps up and decided: Hey, I wanna take over the world!
@@StudioDragoonX To be fair....that does kinda sound like something Al Bundy would try to do. And then fail at it spectacularly. So maybe he IS the Al Bundy type..
He would go out and fight along side his men . I remember one time he had some one held hostage. He keep screaming he wants torch back. If Chris Lata hadn't done his voice it would not had ben the same something about that voice ties it all together. Rip
Some crazy alteration in a movie. Cobra Commander was a regular human. He didn't wear a mask because he was disfigured, he wore it to conceal his identity.
Yeah, I think this is why the animated movie was way more traumatic than the live action, although the live action was also scarier in certain part, especially the opening scene where a hot and glowing iron mask was attached to Destro's great great great grandfather
I much prefer Joseph Gordon Levitt's Cobra Commander. He wears the mask because he suffered 3rd degree burns in an airstrike when Dr. Mindbender promised to show him how the nanomites work and to think he was going to be Duke's brother in law and was one of Duke's soldiers and he is Baroness's brother when she was and is still Ana De Cobray. She is kind of like Anakin Skywalker as in a very conflicted person.
I loved watching this as a kid growing up when it came out with the movie I thought that was the best thing ever GI Joe cartoons were a big part of my life growing up I never missed the episode keep up the good work and keep bringing back the oldies. Cobal lalalala
So, in the comic books he was a used car salesman in a love/hate relationship with his son. In the cartoon, he was a horribly disfigured scientist with 10 eyes from an ancient civilization straight out of H.P. Lovecraft, who eventually mutates into a snake, and is redeemed in the end by helping his former enemies save humanity. Why angry nerds say this show was for kids is just another unsolved mystery.
Swear GI Joe and transformers had weird fates for their characters duke was supposed to die but he was put in a coma they even had a funeral scene that was deleted because so many kids cried when optimus prime died
I don't understand this scene how the hell can Cobra Commander be mutated if he's wearing his armor doesn't make any sense because the dust cannot mutate him if you're wearing armor going to a helmet for your face and armor for your body it doesn't make any sense if anybody has any ideas throw me a bone over here
Yes in one of the comic book Cobra Commander said that his helmet and suit is air tight and has a air system and it's the same in the live Acton moves to. i will look and find what comic issue it is and put it here later so if anyone wants to know be back later.
I am back i found my comic book issue i was taking about it is in the original GI Joe a Real American Hero issue 14 Destro Attacks. so in this issue Cobra Commander and Baroness is going to inject a volunteer with a toxin and before Cobra Commander says his Battle helmet and suit are air tight with a Built in air recycling system. so you do got a good point.
@@katherinelewis2735 Another interesting thing in this scene that makes no real sense is, how could the stupid Nemesis Enforcer guy be so close to the spore he held up to Cobra Commander's face and not get doused with that crap himself, even a little bit? I really don't get that part.
the end og GI JOE started with season 2 and with "movie" it become a reality. As I know (and as you can see on season 1 and 2) Cobra commander was caucasean with normal eyes... what is that shit about to be blue and noble man from a secret and ancient civilization???!?!!!!
