Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested today we’ll be exploring Cobweb, the recently released horror film written by Chris Thomas Devlin and directed by Samuel Bodin.
Starring Woody Norman, Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr and Caroline Coleman, Cobweb revolves around the young Peter, who discovers a perturbing tapping noise from within his walls that begins to torment him. Unfortunately, sharing the new discovery and its impact on him with his delightfully eccentric parents Carol and Mark, gives him no comfort. It's the stuff of childhood nightmares, yet his parents brush it off as a mere figment of his overactive imagination.
As the eerie echoes persist, Peter's conviction strengthens, pushing him on a journey of familial discovery. Unearthing some dark revelations, it becomes clear that his guardians might also be custodians of a sinister secret. Through Bodin's trademark lens, we're served a tantalizing cocktail of childhood scars, the perils of parental overreach, and monsters they can create.
In this video, we’re going to explore the story, the characters and the meaning of its ending.

in all fairness tho i think that is because most serial killers or mass killers are ether very protective and loyal to family or very dominant and abusive to their family none really fall in the middle like normal people do it''s normally one of those extreme's so i imagine alot of the mother's who say that do actually believe it.

This is another one of those situations that could've been solved by some communication. If the parents just told him "your sister is a deceitful spider monster, she's going to kill us, you, and everyone around if she gets out" I'm sure he would've been a bit more hesitant on letting the his arachnid sister out

@@Hawk7886I don't think the parents believed the girl was able to get out of her pit. It may have worked better if they hinted or showed this directly for some people. I didn’t believe Sarah when she said her parents killed the trick-or-treating girl - I thought she presented a false version of what really happened as part of her plan to manipulate Peter. It seemed to me that Sarah actually killed the girl, then the parents buried the body in the back yard to cover it up, and then that’s when they locked Sarah away (to keep her from doing that sort of thing again)- was I way off?
@Lumiria
@Lumiria 9 месяцев назад
That was also my interpretation. Despite being emotionally abusive and distant, Peter's parents weren't really physically abusive so it didn't make sense they would just straight kill a girl rather than just leave town, imo.
@BjornV1994
@BjornV1994 9 месяцев назад
You are probably right to not believe Sarah. It is clear that she is in fact a monster, who kills with glee and with a clear resentment for her "normal" brother. Why wouldn't she manipulate him into believing that their parents were the killer? It is completely within her M.O. to do this and she was likely the killer of the little girl as well. The only difference between your interpretation and mine I think, is that I think that she was locked away sooner than the murder of the child. I think Sarah was really a monster from the beginning. That at first her parents tried to hide her away but just kept her at home, until it became clear that they couldn't hold her due to her aggressive nature. So, they put her in the basement. This might have worked for a while but something happened that made them decide that they needed the hole. Perhaps a measure to put her there when she was too erratic, some sort of time-out pit. Until everything went horribly wrong on Halloween Eve and she escaped. She escaped and killed a little girl. But a parent can't give up on their child, they couldn't give their daughter to the authorities, so they did what any "good parent" would and covered it all up... They literally buried their shame and their daughter was now placed inside the walls of the house, a place that she wouldn't be able to escape from on her own. (Though she did try, the bleeding wound on her fathers arm is proof of that). And that's how I interpret it all. The parents weren't killers if you ask me, they were just ill-equiped to deal with a daughter like Sarah...

One of the scariest horror films of the year maybe even decade. It’s a phycological thriller playing against your very fears . Nothing is what you expect until there’s nothing left but you cowering alone in an empty house stowed away in a dark room staring down an empty hallway through an open door between what you know is there and what you wish really wasn’t . Until the footsteps you’ve been hiding from reach your bedside . It’s a beautiful ride .

Wonderful to see a more original take on the spider monster trope. Usually it's just a vilification of wild animals that naturally avoid us. This added an interesting twist in that monster is a deformed young woman with incredible abilities, much like how Oswald Cobblepot was in the Batman Returns film. Some times the easiest way to create monsters, is to breed them in the belly of a monster who looks normal on the outside but has a soul as evil as sin.

Like many, many horror movies like it, it suffers tremendously by the reveal. Somehow knowing and seeing this not-scary and ridiculous spider girl is enough to make the movie feel silly. I think the two parents was the best part of this movie. A bit campy at times, but I love the "unhingedness" of them both, like they are two walking time bombs of madness that could go off at any time. Peter is also wonderfully played. Child actors can be hit or miss but this kid just had a genuine face of hopelessness and deer-in-headlights throughout the movie.

I believe that thematically the movie is about anxiety. As the abuse against the child worsens, his anxiety increases until he eventually becomes a paranoid schizophrenic. I think the sister represents the thoughts swirling in the child’s mind. From the beginning, we know he hears a tapping noise on his wall and he may hear the noises, but his reaction is over the top. He catastrophizes over the noises, even being so afraid that he dreams his mother is making the noises and attempts to kill him in the middle of the night. These aren’t just dreams, they are the manifestation of his thoughts. He really believes that this could be a possible explanation for the noises and that’s how anxiety can affect a person, especially a young and imaginative child. Throughout the movie the abuse from his parents become worse and this leads him to become even more fearful and anxious. The abuse from his parents is nothing to scoff at and has been going on for years. After they lock him in the basement, his sister talks to him and tells him they are going to kill them. However, we see that while they are abusive parents, they have no intention of actually physically harming their child. It’s not the threat of physical violence that makes him act, it’s the emotional trauma. The boy knows that his parents are the source of his anxiety. Through his sister, which may represent a deprived extension of himself, he rationalizes that they have to die for his suffering to end. In this way, his sister may just be a person his mind invented to justify committing such a terrible act as killing his own parents. The movie further solidifies this idea by the ending. His sister tells him that she will always be with him because his sister isn’t just a tangible being. She is a representation of all his fears and anxieties. She is the psychological manifestation of the trauma he endured by his parents hands and even though they are gone, that trauma remains and he solved nothing by killing them or by locking the sister back up. And that’s also why she said the bars can’t hold her. She will always find him because she will always be with him.
@mike48931
@mike48931 9 месяцев назад
It also makes perfect sense that the kid is terrified of spiders and his sister is a spider like monster. That’s just another example of how the sister simply represents the kids anxiety.

I love your video reviews/explanations man. However, I think you might need to make one correction. According to several other sources, the parents did not kill Rebecca Holbrook. Apparently Rebecca knocked on their door on Halloween and somehow Sarah opened the door and killed her. Then the parents tried to cover it up by burying her in the backyard. Sarah even implies this towards the end, saying "just like the girl in the garden" when the bullies enter the home. Someone correct me if I am wrong. It's either the parents killed Rebecca to not have what is going on with Sarah leaked, or Sarah killed Rebecca. Good movie though. I thought it was original and good.

If these 2 are some sorta misguided heroes of parents they shoulda, been loving an caring normal ones while letting him know of the EXTREME danger of "Sarah" if they wasn't willing to try an raise her an help her hide it an MAYBE making her be something different altogether. Someone like "her" coulda been raised to be something else if they hadn't done the kinda psychopathic things to drive her psychotic an choose some kinda evil. HOWEVER even alot of psychos got their limits sometimes. An if she called him "family" determined to stay with him "always" implying she still calls him family after vengeance on their parents. An he may have some secret darkside guardian now somehow if they can reach some kinda arrangement to keep her from hurting him an those he'll come to carry for except for very specific circumstances

I liked this movie, but it kind of lost me at the strength of the monster. So it can eviscerate someone in 0.4 seconds and throw around almost grown men like the rubber pencil trick, but she can’t break out of some old shitty drywall?

15:53 So, they battled a mutant freak, locked her in a cage, and got away but didn’t call police to go up in there and smoke her ass!? They just went home like nothings wrong!? Smfh…

i really enjoyed this movie, i do feel like it had some plot holes, like Sarah the spider monster being strong enough to rip people apart but not burst out of the walls??? Why the parents didn’t finally tell peter the girl in the wall was evil, why they put him in the basement with her cage that shows they had her chained up. Overall i still enjoyed this movie, it had a fairytale vibe with all the music 😊

Will you ever do Higanjima/Escape from Vampire Island? I read about halfway, the story is not the best but all the monster designs are good.

Hey is that Homelander? And where can I watch this? I appreciate streaming, but sometimes I miss standing in a video store for hours waiting for someone to return a movie. If only because I knew exactly what was needed to watch said movie instead of wondering if I need to subscribe to an entire streaming service for a month for one damn movie if the movie I want to watch isn't on one of the other 5 streaming services I already am subscribed to. Of which I barely watch anyway because most movies suck now days cuz politics lol

To me this is an exploration of how your family can be the true monsters to cause you the most harm and they can come in many forms . And also trying to live with the Legacy I've been connected to literal monsters.
