Lucky for you dentists haven’t used novocaine for over 50 years. The local anesthetics most commonly used are lidocaine (xylocaine) and septocaine (articaine). Allergic reactions to local anesthetics used in dentistry are extremely rare because it’s not possible to be allergic to the anesthetic itself, but very rarely people can have an allergy to the common preservatives used in some anesthetics (this is called a sulfite allergy - not to be confused with sulfate), as sodium bisulfite and occasionally metabisulfite are preservatives used in anesthetic. It’s possible that you have this allergy; but tbh it’s far more likely that you had a reaction to the epinephrine, either due to epi-rush or an underlying heart condition (or maybe a stimulant drug problem like using cocaine or meth), etc. based on your description of “coding on the table”, since an anaphylactic allergic response would 1. not cause you to code and 2. Is essentially impossible to achieve from these sulfites because these anesthetics also contain epinephrine (the life saving drug given during anaphylaxis). So even if there was an allergy, it would be immediately cancelled out by the presence of the epi. This is why dentists do not believe you when you say you’re allergic to “novocaine”, because most people don’t know what they’re talking about and associate the feeling of racing heart, shakiness, etc, immediately after the infection with an adverse reaction, when in reality it is just the epinephrine working correctly. So, a doctor says " I'm gonna give you some Novocaine" and seconds later you feel your pulse race, the room starts spinning and a weird warm feeling washes over you. Cause and effect. You get the shot, you have the symptoms. Then an edjumacated idiot says "You didn't have an allergic reaction, you have no idea what you're talking about." Wow!! The arrogance!! @@stargirl91291 my guess regarding the 'code', if it was in fact a code would've been the result of injecting the local into an artery causing arrhythmia, again would not be an allergic reaction nonetheless.
