Hello my friends.
I found a new word and couldn't resist using it and I did so in a gateway. Life goals!
(Coddiwomple - To travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination)
After that I ride Ernie my Royal Enfield Classic 500 around some country lanes starting off near Illand which is a few miles outside Launceston. I bore you with a load of waffle about a weekend in Somerset with Twinks, treat you to another gateway view and offer some advice for next time you follow a farm trailer down a country lane.
I have actually been very close to being squashed by one a couple of years ago. I followed all my own advice eg. keeping distance and trying to make myself visible but, I wasn't spotted and it started reversing towards me. Tooting my horn whilst paddling backwards made no difference and he was out-pacing me. I was a couple of seconds away from dropping the bike and making a run for it when thankfully, the vehicle it was reversing for found a gap to pull in and disaster was averted. Quite a story eh? Just needs some dragons and stuff.
Anyhoo, the video ends at Ley Mill after riding down a dark, damp and slippery lane.

Sounds like a nice time in Somerset. It's nice to have those get aways, I forgotten what that was like so hearing yours was real good. Good to see you have a couple hours out on ern, problem is I know you spent 2 hours cleaning when you got home 😅 Old skool SB vid🎉

What an interesting weekend yourself and Twinks had, full of new surprises and discoveries. You discovered that neither of you are " Twitchers", " Witches", " Druids" or " Hippies", whilst realising that you yourself are a " Coddiwompler" 🤔😯 Still, we won't hold it against you, everyone's got their little foibles and actually I find it quite entertaining that you share yours with us. Glad you both had a relaxing weekend, regards to you both and best wishes for everyone on the Social ride.

No matter how many times you are riding on the same roads, there is always something chnaged, something added or new. That happnes when you start enjoing what is around and you are doing exactly what I am talking about. The Swan Hotel has probably a very interesting history. Cheers Jeff. A very enjoyable video.

Lovely video....those little lanes are gorgeous! Bike sounds great rumbling along. I had a huge lorry, just as you described reversing towards me, oblivious to me despite revving and beeping the horn. As it got close to ' squashing ' time I managed to spin the bike round using the sidestand..phew!! Cheers Steve 💚

@@stepheneldridge6998 Thank you Steve. Scary isn’t it. I had a tractor and BIG trailer reverse at me. Back paddled but he was outpacing me and beeping the horn was a waste of time. I was just about to drop the bike and run for it, when he stopped because the vehicle coming the other found a spot to go in 😥 Thanks again my friend. Take care out there. Jeff 💚

There is a book called ‘The Land Beyond the Ridge’ by Ken Bateson. It was serialised in the 1970’s in Motorcycle Sport. It is about a man’s motorcycling history starting just after WW1 and ending as an old man in the 1970’s. Ken describes the wonderful days at the very dawn of motorcycling on his 500 Norton, riding down lanes; just like the ones your riding down now. The memory of which Ken called ‘the golden days of the land beyond the ridge’ I always think of him when riding down country lanes and your video is a perfect example. Luved it man. Ride safe

Loving these videos bumbling round the countryside lanes you just miss so much when you stick to main roads just thinking while riding what it used to be to be like years ago when they were probably the main roads of that era nice and peaceful and rarely seeing anybody great to clear the head take care

Ah Im glad you enjoy these rides. They are therapeutic for me. I love the fact that I can still get lost within a few miles of home. Not knowing what’s around the next corner or over the brow of the hill is wonderful. Often nothing particularly interesting, but now and then a gem. And always a pleasure being out on Ernie. I had to read that title V-E-R-Y carefully. There is a extraordinarily similar epithet that we use to yell at cyclists and BMW/Audi drivers 😂😂 Glad you and Twinks survived to tell the tale of your foray into Somerset. Ernie looking beautiful as ever - best way to enjoy is getting lost (my missus tells me all the time to get lost) Sadly it will be a while before I will do a bumble on Badger again. This weekend when doing maintenance, I was investigating some knocking and found that her crankshaft is on the fritz, so that will mean a rebuild... luckily I have the Interceptor to fall back on...

@@Saddlebags73 Nope, no luck at all, if she ate another crankshaft after just 4500 miles after the last crankshaft replacement. Last time was a warranty job. This time I'm cracking the engine myself - what was the saying? "If you want something done proper then do it yourself"? 🤷‍♀

What a very lovely coddiwomple indeedy 🙂 I didn't realise Cheddar had a second cave to explore, I really enjoyed Goff's cave when I visited back in 2018... I really should go back there as want to do Wookey Hole too. It is mega touristy though, which I feel all icky inside being around so many people... I'll have to find a rainy day to venture over there off season.

You were right on my doorstep for the weekend. You're right; Cheddar is a trap for tourists, and (some of) the residents of Glastonbury are utterly strange. Did you see the tall fella who looks like The Grim Reaper disguised as a clown? Scary looking dude, but there are plenty like him to choose from. Priddy used to host an annual sheep fair which had been running for hundreds of years, good place to buy a dodgy horse from the travellers... or a horse from the dodgy travellers. It was a proper Gypsy Fair, but I don't think it has happened since covid... shame, it was a great day out.... I think it's now turned into a Folk Festival.

Just got back from a rumble on Oddball and 'twas glorious. Crossed the Rio Grande a couple times, down to Belen, up to Tome' then back to Los Lunas. Not nearly as green as the English countryside but not bad for dry desert. New tires felt great...Shinko's...same as on the R1200RT just smaller of course. Had to do some rear wheel alignment, bike was falling off to the right. Check your rear axle to swingarm pivot dimension both sides if your bike wants to wander off on its own accord. These machines aren't exactly laser aligned at the factory! Cheers from across the pond.

The hedgerows are like a confusing great maze to me...I would think any invader would soon be lost. A person could easily go missing in those beautiful lanes.

I believe that during the second World War the British government removed directional signs as part of anti invasion plans. The Germans would have definitely had problems navigating these lanes! Everywhere currently looking beautiful and lush 😍

My friend was a dealer and still has one of those. I was too married and my wife wouldn't let me buy his military model with the sidecar. I only got to get on one once :/ If he still had it, I would be all over it now, and that was 2005!

I have considered a black plate for him though. Have a safe ride down you two. I will be busy in the days following the social ride prepping for the Ireland trip. The RE classic 500 looks like an authentic classic bike unlike the new classic 350 that looks fake classic with its digital instrument and more modern gear box cover.

I love my 500. The 350’s are a little modernised but still nice bikes I think. Owners seem to get attached to them in a similar way that I am to mine. All RE’s seem to have something about them. I wouldn’t swap the 500 for one though.
