Perfect ending. It was tragic but very satisfying. Lelouch and Suzaku got their punishments. Lelouch wanted to live in a better world with his sister. Suzaku wanted to redeem himself by dying. Neither got their wish. That was their punishment. Also I love how Kallen realised what their plan was, at the end when Todou started to say “is that who I think it is?” She stopped him by saying “it’s Zero” to keep up the illusion.

The official guide book beautifully, poetically confirms Lelouch's death and describes the ending as follows: "For those two who bear the heavy sin known as killing their fathers, they share the belief that they can forgive each other by imposing the greatest punishments on themselves. Death for Lelouch who wishes for a tomorrow with his sister, life for Suzaku who wishes to atone for his sins through death."

That's certainly quite poetic - I kinda want to have a calligrapher or typographer make me a wall scroll of it. I'm not sure that killing Charles was anything to be ashamed of, like killing Genbu; wasn't that Lelouch's goal from the beginning, after all? In the start of the show, he was the type who cherished his own Loved Ones and considered everyone else Expendable; it wasn't until after his mistakes cost the lives of Euphemia, the two Fenettes, and (he thought) Nunnally, that the experience of loss awakened his empathy for Humanity At Large.

luckily it actually does not confirm such things, as the author himself said he wants the ending open ended, so that eithier way could be assumed, lelouch could have inhereited his father immorality and watches over his sister and the world. or he could ahve died.

The part that always gets me in this finale is when Nunnally is sobbing on top of Lelouch's body while everyone else cheers. It's heart breaking because they never got to properly make up after he betrayed her on the Damocles, but it is nice to know that she understood the Zero Requiem and what he did in the end. This was one of my favorite reactions to this show, overall really interesting discussions and good predictions! I generally only watch reactions of shows I've already seen, so I might end up checking out Fate/Zero or Psycho Pass to see y'alls thoughts after.

Lelouch was willing to sacrifice everything and go down in history as a rotten villain just for the sake of giving his sister a better life. He lost parts of his innocence, his friends, his supporters, and his life, by at the end, he gained peace and reassurance from Suzaku that he would protect everything he cared for.

Lelouch if he is completely dead in the series, the director himself confirmed it since many fans affirmed that lelouch was that driver, they even got theories about it but everything was already clarified, CC was talking with lelouch mentally, like the time she was talking with Lelouch's mother from time to time, when Suzaku said that "I will accept that Geass" Lelouch did not give him a power, since he does not carry a Code like CC, basically what he meant was that by sacrificing himself and being zero for It will always be Suzaku's punishment since Lelouch always wanted Suzaku to be happy since from season 1 when Lelouch learned that Suzaku was his father's murderer Lelouch realized that Suzaku was permanently trying to die and pay for that tremendous crime and that in the process while seeking forgiveness many times he suffered and lost his way, and that is why now Lelouch in other words what he wanted to say was that "he does not have to suffer anymore and that not you You have to lose yourself looking for a punishment "because I will give it to you myself and in this way you will never lose your way again.

This is from the Code Geass Official Guide Book. "For those two who bear the heavy sin known as killing their fathers, they share the belief that they can forgive each other by imposing the greatest punishments on themselves. Death for Lelouch who wishes for a tomorrow with his sister, life for Suzaku who wishes to atone for his sins through death. Suzaku, who accepts the weight of Zero's mask, gives his gratitude to Lelouch. For the fact that he can atone for his sins. For the results of fulfilling his own wish." The Movie is a separate timeline and so in this timeline, it is definite that Lelouch died because it needs to be that way to resolve everything and to end everything. It is also his punishment. As for the quote, "War is the mother of invention" remember that this is a world in constant war, peace wasn't fully achieved in a very very long time(It's the reason why the code geass world is divided into 3 factions) and so in the eyes of many people "War" is what drives inventions because they still don't see that it's not only war that can grant that necessity to drive innovations. And with how the world's governments was spending their budgets more to military instead of it's people, you can see how most would see that only war can fund the innovations in this world.
@OmikronZeta
@OmikronZeta 2 года назад
"a world in constant war, peace wasn't fully achieved in a very very long time" - so the same as _our_ world, then?
@ubeia4857
@ubeia4857 2 года назад
@@OmikronZeta Not exactly, our world didn't war with each other until there's only 3 nations left and we also didn't focus our innovations only on the military, this world though did that and resulted on war being focus of all the 3 factions. And each faction had to focus their innovations on the military otherwise the other 2 factions can use that weakness to take over. This world got locked in a position where if they don't focus on making war machines they won't be able to keep their countries at all. And because they focused their attention too much on the military combined with the fact that most of these nations are monarchies, improving and innovating on things other than war didn't become a priority, with the exception of things that will benefit only the elites(privileged citizens/nobles/royals) and so in the eyes of inventors and innovators alike, only things related to war can get the funding for their research and inventions with the exception of things the ruling class want.

I'm going to recommend Lelouch of the Re;surrection. It's not a continuation of the anime, it's a continuation of the 3 recap movies that are technically in a slightly different timeline, but the only thing you really need to know about that timeline is that Rolo never killed Shirley in it. Pretty much everything else of importance is the same.
@IsilionNELE
@IsilionNELE 2 года назад
The biggest difference is C.C.'s personal arc. In the anime she accepted life again and was no longer suicidal, this was the smile Lelouch promised her. So i the anime she accepts Lelouch's death. In the movie trilogies they changed the epilogue to have her say she doesn't accept his death, that's why she does what she dos in "Lelouch of the Resurrection". without that change the resurrection movie couldn't even exist because C.C. has no reason to do that.

If you enjoyed the series, then consider watching Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection which is not a direct sequel to the series and therefore doesn't harm the perfect ending.. but a sequel to the three movies based in an alternative universe in which there are some changes to the series but overall they're generally similar. Lelouch is most likely dead in the series. It's been more or less confirmed by the creators of the show. Even in the movies he died from Zero's blade, and only after that the ressurection stuff happens. I myself like this ending very much - it serves as a great conclusion to Lelouch's character arc. He pays with his life for every sin he commited and with his death he also fulfills his responsibility towards everyone that his actions have affected, giving the world a chance to move towards a better tomorrow.

The reason they don't show the cart driver's face is because he's a random nobody. C.C.'s speech about solitude is about her. She says her original belief about solitude is wrong, because she is no longer suicidal and has again accepted life and the future, that's Lelouch's promise to make her smile which was fulfilled. That's her character arc. At the end of the anime she mentions this several times. "I never knew I still had these feelings inside of me", "I have start start living again instead of just accumulating experiences"

So, the movies (which consist of a recap trilogy and the Re;surrection Movie) are technically an Alternate Universe, so -what happened to Lelouch (and C.C. to an extent) is left ambiguous- for Code Geass proper. However, with regards to said movies, all I'll spoil (outside of what the title already does) is that C.C. still has her immortality, for better or worse... Edit: I was previously unaware, but during an interview in 2008, it was officially confirmed that Lelouch did in fact die at the end of Code Geass proper.
@IsilionNELE
@IsilionNELE 2 года назад
Lelouch's fate is not ambiguous though. It was officially confirmed he's dead for real. the anime's established rules make it even impossible for him to have a code. And on the 2009 DVD C.C. addresses the audience directly and explicitly confirms he's totally dead and that she mourns his death.

If you guys planning to watch the movie Lelouch of the Resurrection. Keep in mind this is not a direct sequel on this two seasons (50 episodes) but rather a sequel to the trilogy. The trilogy are just recaps with new scenes and have some minor and ONE major change that you can search or ask some people what is it to skip the trilogy. They did this to preserve this ending. And the Lelouch of the Resurrection and the things that will come after it is the alternate version or the new canon would say. Akito the Exile is by the way a canon to this two seasons which took between season 1 and season 2.

Lelouch is dead for real. There have been many theories over the years of how he could have survived, all of which have been debunked. There was originally going to be an ending which left it much more open to think he could have survived, but that was scrapped in order to ensure clarity and make the ending definitive. That C.C. 'talks' to Lelouch at the very end is no different from when people address their dead loved ones in the second person, but if you want to interpret it as her speaking to Lelouch for real, the simplest answer is that it's the same as how she spoke to Marianne and how Charles spoke to Clovis after Lelouch had killed him. She 'exists' in C's World and so has access to the dead that others don't have. Lelouch came up with the Zero Requiem when he thought Nunnally was dead. At the time he had nothing to live for and wanted to die. Seeing Nunnally alive hurt him so much because it took away the reason he wanted to die and restored the reason he wanted to live. And he kept going, not changing the plan at all, because he was finally putting the greater good ahead of what was best for Nunnally. The difference between Lelouch's plan and Nunnally's plan is that while both were building a symbol of hatred for the world to unite against, Lelouch also built a symbol of hope for them to unite around, Zero. The specifics of the plan are quite genius. Because of the war, every nation on earth is now part of the UFN, which means it is illegal for any nation to have its own military. The Black Knights are the only military allowed to exist in the world. In addition, by sparing Schniezel, Lelouch has ensured that Zero will be able to operate in a manner that makes him seem as intelligent as the original Zero. With Schniezel's help Suzaku will be able to come up with the kinds of stratagems Lelouch would have and be more than just a figurehead. Lelouch, Schniezel, and Charles each wanted to make the world a better place and end war forever. Charles thought deceit was the primary cause of conflict and so tried to remove mankind's ability to lie, thinking that would end war. Schniezel thought greed was the source of all conflict and so sought to control that greed through fear and controlling all means of production. He'd bomb the world into the stone age and rebuild it with himself in control of everything, thereby ensuring people wouldn't have anything to be greedy towards and ending war that way. Both saw humanity as fundamentally flawed and in need of a master to fix them or control them. They sought a perfect world at the expense of free will. Lelouch, because he lived among the commoners and nobles and learned from them, saw humanity in a better light than either of them. He saw the human drive to make things better and the capacity for hope as fundamentally good because of his experiences with the Black Knights and the student council. And he saw what a stagnant world would mean from how C.C. hated her immortality. The reason both Lelouch and Schniezel had such drastic plans was because of the threat of the fleijas. Both of them knew this would change war forever and lead to an arms race which could destroy the world. Schniezel's answer was to bomb the industrial centers and take control of the rebuilding so he'd be the only one who would ever have the capacity to build fleijas. Lelouch took the route of trying to get rid of the motivation to build them. The primary reason Lelouch played the evil emperor was to lure Schniezel into a confrontation. Schniezel could have just taken the Damocles into orbit and bombed away without ever engaging in combat, so Lelouch made himself an irresistible target to ensure he could be defeated before that could happen. But he could not then turn around and say it was all an act. Once he was painted as evil, that's how he would always have been seen. We'll never know if Lelouch would have done things differently if he had known Nunnally was alive or if Schniezel and the fleijas weren't such threats. It's possible he could have been a good emperor who made peace by shaking hands. It's also possible he could have gone back to living in obscurity. In the end, Lelouch did live up to the ideals he espoused. 'If the king doesn't lead, how can he expect his subordinates to follow?' He was always willing to put himself on the front line during battle, whether in a Burai, the Gawain, or the Shinkiro. 'The only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.' He planned his own violent death for the sake of the world. 'You should come to death smiling.' He looked his own death in the eye and smiled, knowing it served a greater cause. And he provided his own answer to the evil paradox he asked when he rescued the Black Knights in episode 4 of season 2. 'What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?' His answer was to commit evil, but to destroy both evils so that no evil remained on either side, even if it meant destroying himself.

Regarding the movies, the first 3 are basically the first 2 seasons with some cut content that ends up changing 1 thing that happens in season 2 (not specifying anything since i don't know if you are thinking of watching the 3 recap movies when you decide to watch Ressurection) but overall it's the same story. The Ressurection movie happens after them. I don't know of the top of my head what the changes were exactly beteen the recap movies and the anime but I'm sure someone else will tell you. This means the 3 recap movies followed by the Ressurection movie are an alternate universe, it was the way they decided to go to make it possible to expand the world of code geass with further projects without changing the original's ending. Regarding how good Ressurection is or not, I see a lot of people divided on the matter. Some feel it's just an attempt to gain more money from code geass's popularity some just don't like it. Personally I enjoyed it specially because of a couple scenes that to me just made the movie worth it since they involve some character interactions after the end of the original. Regarding the comments on the ending I definitly agree with you guys, I loved the ending of code geass when I first watched it so many years ago. Is it one of my favorite anime/ anime endings? Definitly but calling it the best ever like so many do is just wrong, different people will enjoy certain types of stories and their developments differently. I think it was a great ending and when I watched it it was probably the first time I saw an ending like it in a story, so to me it will always be one of the best anime endings i've seen, but i've watched an read enough since then to know that there is no real answer to that question, even if there was it could change at any time. It's kind of weird that we like an in-between of the two potential ways of getting peace shown in the show. Damocles showed using force (nukes) to take the world hostage to prevent conflict, while Lelouch's death gave international peace (kinda like what happened after ww2 with Hitler). I think that we have nukes that contain large scale conflict between major nations to prevent something like ww2 from happening, and international peace through groups such as the UN using diplomacy as peacekeeping showing the example of WW2 to show the consequences of large scale conflict

Thank you again Blake and Jeff for your reaction and funny yet in-depth thoughts and review! I remember when i watched as it first aired, it was not so cut and dry that Lelouch was not the driver. I believe the show intentionally left the ending ambiguous at first. Otherwise some scenes would’ve been pointless. Also the official novel adaptation directly hinted the driver was Lelouch (though some don’t consider it’s canon either anyway). Plus the song sing “we will meet again as long as we are alive” and etc. It wasn’t until later the creators gave an clear answer which I also believe was a compromise since some fans don’t want to ruin a perfect ending. Although I agree Lelouch being dead was for the best, in my heart I still wish he somehow survived without knowing he had the code because i love his character too much. Isn’t that one of the show’s themes? That people’s wishes and longing for the better will drive the world moving and we should honor that. So I am fine with people watching the show choosing their own canon and I don’t want to convince them one way or the other. That being said, I’d love you to check out Lelouch of the Resurrection movie if you have time. It’s actually a great fan service movie (in an almost non sexual way, wink) for people who love the show.

The show staff have always said that lelouch was deadand never had a code. They even said that they had decided on this before the writing had even started ルルーシュという人間の物語を書くにあたって、最初に谷口監督と確認し合ったことがあります。それは、ルルーシュの結末が「死」であるということです。 "Before I started writing the story of a person called Lelouch, I confirmed with Taniguchi-director something. That thing was that the end of Lelouch will be DEATH." They even used 「」to highlight that he's dead, that's how words are emphasized in Japanese As for the light novel, it's not canon in the slightest, everything is different, even the characters. For example Nunnally taunts Suzaku about being a bad knight because he let Euphy die. The real Nunnally would never do that.

That means those images were just for the viewers to make us understand what she realized. I've praised code geass a lot in the comments of a bunch of your videos, don't really have much more to say, but I'll say this, Code Geass has the best ending I have seen ***in my opinion***, it did everything it tried to do just right. Code Geass remains my favorite anime of all time. FMAB is my second favorite, its a great journey but I thought the ending was a bit strange. Another thing, this anime is over and Lelouch died, it's canon. when CC was in a church earlier she talked to herself referring to Lelouch, and in the end, she was doing the same thing, she wasn't actually talking to him. And as you said, the movie is called Lelouch of the Ressurection, I said before the movie series changes the story slightly, so you can guess what the main difference is. One last thing, there's this thing called code geass official guide book, I haven't read it personally, but I think this quote is worth bringing up: "For those two who bear the heavy sin known as killing their fathers, they share the belief that they can forgive each other by imposing the greatest punishments on themselves. Death for Lelouch who wishes for a tomorrow with his sister, life for Suzaku who wishes to atone for his sins through death. Suzaku, who accepts the weight of Zero's mask, gives his gratitude to Lelouch. For the fact that he can atone for his sins. For the results of fulfilling his own wish." that's all I had. wow, 6 months and more to go, excited for more Attack on titan and whatever else is to come. One more thing actually, a recommendation. I think you should check out Castlevania, it's a Netflix original western animated series that is very anime-like. it has been concluded with a total of 32 episodes across 4 seasons, it's fantastic. Anyway, great video, can't wait for the next one

As person who was watching this on TV at the time Japan, I want you to know a few. This was planned by Production Sunrise, known for Gundam and many robot mecha anime, as an anniversary for several decades. It's kind a "monumental" anime. Taniguchi Goro is a director who has been praised for his fast-paced story progression and his vivid portrayal of characters. This is personal opinion but the theme of this anime is not sublime like nation/politics/war/love/....probably there's no such as things. I think they just want to creat something extremely entertaining anime with animattion /story telling/ editorial method they had figured out. Whether or not the story plot of the second season is cluttered, it doesn't really matter for fan like me at that time (like a who care?) What's worth noting is that they can make the ridiculous farce story line look so great, and the cool, smooth robot fight animations that Sunrise made from its track record. It's a bit nonsense to criticize anything else. Basically, this show is kind of parody of past classics anime such as Eva/ Legendary Galactic Heroes and etc... (There are various theories.) And of course enjoying your favorite female character........and Suzaku's annoyance, Rolo's patheticness. Happy orange royalty . The massive unpopularity of Ougi from fan ......... And enjoy Lelouch's life suffering and demonic face and intelligence (actually airhead) Let's blast coffee out of your mouth with the greatest spoiler of "Bloody Yuffie ". Well this is not an anime that two gentlemen analyze carefully. But it's okay I really enjoyed it! We should really respect and being grateful the producers and Sunrise to say "Ok lets go!! (with so much anxious)" to this anime. However, you are free what you really think about this comment and what possibilities you find from this great work. I think that's the best thing about anime. Finally Sorry for my shitty English and Thank you so much.

Well, they didn't use the debunked fan theory that Lelouch has a code. The movie confirms he was truly dead and that C.C. literally resurrected his dead corpse. So no code. C.C. explicitly denies that lelouch has a code, pointing out he still has a geass, which is impossible for code bearers. the movie sows us the mark on his chest is a NEW power and not a code because its properties are completely different. E.g. lelouch gets geassed in the movie's picture drama. Shamna, who has the same new power, gets geassed. Shamna dies. Etc All impossible for code bearers. And the writers have confirmed that the mark is a new power which only Lelouch and Shamna have. It's good they didn't use that debunked fan myth of Lelouch having a code because that woudl have violated the established rules of how codes and geasses work. the anime makes it literally impossible for Lelouch to have a code, so if he had had one in the movie it woudl have been a massive plothole

For me it wasnt necessarly the ending itself that makes the Ending great. That Twist has been done of course and is nothing that gives it the credibility alone. What defines this anime (despite having some downs) as having the best ending, is how everything is resolved, how many poetical layers are there to go through, how it mirrors major themes of the whole series, and could be totally predicted from episode 19 onwards if you just payed enough attention. It feels grand and majestic exactly because of being so throughly set up and executed. some of the inexhaustable list of why it is set up so well: first for the setup that went into it since very early: - Lelouch prepared by enslaving all the racist nobles with "be my slaves" and the military that was willing to just slaughter 11s, taking them with him into battle to delete them ready for his new world order - Lelouch (before setting off to the meeting) let jeremiah defeat any of the racist elites - Schneizel serves Zero, not Lelouch - Lelouch literally talks about "living for a future" multiple times - He, at the right time, commands his truest advisors (the maid, the scientists etc.) to "betray him" as to not get associated with him. - Now the empire after his death has no more Nobility and no more war hungry racist soldiers. The ending gets alluded too (or the themes that get spoken out thorughout the series are coherent with it) a lot of times: - "Those who kill should be prepared to be killed" Lelouch E1 S1 - "The war is over when one side wins" Lelouch E3 S1 - "If the king doesnt move, how does he expect to lead his people" - Multiple times -... - Suzaku has to live when all he every seeked was his death - Lelouch gets to die, even though he wanted a future with nunnaly - Lelouch dies by the hands of Suzaku, just like the prior leader of the rebellion (his father) died by his hands - Orange on an orange farm - Nunnally gets her "punishment" for being complicit in Schneizels plans by literally having her brother die in her arms - The ending scene mirrors the same Scene after Euphys death. A crowd of people around Zero (who just did a horrible act of killing a friend) celebrating and shouting his name. -,,,,

But, yeah, I agree with Jeff that's it's definitely not war. It's like saying "war is the ONLY mother of invention" which means inventions do not happen in times of peace. But there is necessity, regardless if there's war or none. Also, *want* may produce invention, but I'd say it's because there is a *necessity* to satisfy that want that brings forth invention. Also, just to share what I say to myself: "Necessity is the mother of invention; And curiosity the father."

Lelouch, hands down. Light lost his humanity and never recovered it. I actively rooted for his death by the end of the series. I think Code Geass is the better and more complete of the two with a satisfying conclusion. Light is basically Dexter, fascinating to watch try and get away with everything but ultimately an irredeemable character. Lelouch believes in something outside of himself and works towards that greater goal. Blake could feel differently but that's my take.

Going into the Code Geass movie(s), if you do: The first 3 movies are a series recap with a handful of retcons and alternate scenes. This is to set up the final movie, which is separate from the series canon. The movies are canon to themselves to not disrupt the series ending. Tbh whether the recaps get reacted to on the channel or not, I still think they're worth watching just to be up to speed on what's important, and because some of the new scenes are genuinely interesting (Rakshata's arrival, what Suzaku was doing to rise the ranks of the Rounds, and ofc the scene of Nunnally and Lelouch being sent to Japan and seeing all the young versions of the princes and princesses seeing them off are all great). If you do decide to skip the recaps, the biggest change is that Shirley survives, and that Mao just... Doesn't exist? They skip that arc to save time sadly, and bc it's a giant domino effect that leads to her dying. Sad to see, but I think the final movie definitely makes up for it. Tried to be vague bc I don't want to spoil Re;Surrection more than the title already does. I'm sure you both will love it if you get around to watching it.

If he views Lelouch as Zero, then when Lelouch dies, does he still follow Zero knowing that that is not Lelouch? 3. But, if he obeys to "serve Zero" and that Zero is actually a symbol (as in back at the episode wherein 1 million people wore Zero's costume and all of them were counted as Zero), then does that mean that Schneizel will serve and obey anybody who wears Zero's costume?

About that ending... It may not be a fresh idea for an ending for those familiar with Watchmen. Nonetheless, the ending of this anime is amazing as the ending of Watchmen is also amazing (obviously debatable, but just saying as analogy). But what I like about the ending is not only the reveal of the Zero Requiem itself or the plan to gather all hatred, etc. It's also how it concluded the two main characters and closed the entire series. The whole series opened with a Britannian fighting for the Japanese, and a Japanese fighting for the Britannians. Both wanted the same thing but differed in their methods. But along the show, it was hinted and demonstrated that if only these two would work together, they would accomplish the impossible. And, at the end, they did. And they succeeded. And the one who wished to rebel against Britannia changed it from the inside; While the one who wanted to change it from the inside became the symbol of rebellion (well, justice, but you know what I mean :P).

FMAB glossed over a lot of characters while in Code Geass, you really get to know each side characters and what they do: Mao, Rolo, Nina, Tohdoh, Xingke, Ohgi, Sayoko, Gino, Gilbert, and on and so forth. They are not forgettable.

(LOL. I just realized I turned your comment section into a forum thread. Sorry. Anyway...) I like Code Geass better than FMAB. But, even though Code Geass is my rank 1 anime, there's one *major* element that FMAB has that Code Geass does not have. I have seen this show several times, but I was never--NOT EVER--convinced that Lelouch was doing those things for Nunnally. For FMAB, the close relationship between the two brothers was evident. For Code Geass, the only reason I know that Lelouch is doing those things for Nunnally is because he's saying that he's doing it for Nunnally. I was not convinced Nunnally's future is his motivation. This show did not give me an emotional investment for their relationship. And I think it's because it did not show me a convincing amount of bond between them that I didn't feel like they were close--unlike in FMAB where the siblings journeyed together, battled together, cried and failed together. I was not convinced that Lelouch could not live without Nunnally. So imagine my confusion in S1 finale when Lelouch left the battlefield because Nunnally was kidnapped.

I'd like to point out that Code Geass IS very much a mecha anime in the same veins as Gundam because in anime, mechs are just tools to tell the characters' story and to push the whole narrative forward rather than being the main focus. In fact, Gundam is all about the message of war being bad and the traumatic consequences that come from it just like how in Evangelion, the mechs are just a symbolic metaphor for the struggles Shinji goes through. Basically, what I am trying to say is that mecha anime has people under this illusion of it all being about big dumb robots, which admittedly are highlights, but in actuality are really about the characters and their journey of growth rather than which robot is bigger and better. I hope you react to Gundam next, specifically 00 or Seed because they are easier to get into and then maybe seeing the original saga if you like what you see there.

I think endings are very tricky to pull it off, and the reason why people think this is the best ending in anime it's because it's the best possible ending this story could possibly get. It's not necessarily the best ending in absolute terms, but the one it's most fiting for this story. It doesn't come out of nowhere, it doesn't betray it's themes, it perfectly ties up all the loose ends that matter for the story and comes full circle. I don't even think Code Geass is a perfect story, I have tons of issues of S2 but this is the best ending they could do for this story. A lot of anime endings often are disapoiting because people disagree on what the point of the story is, and the conclusion the author came up with dind't live up with to some expecations.

28:52 For SOOOOO many years, I also have the same idea as Jeff for the ending. Even until now, that's what I'd like to believe in. And that's why I like the ending so much. Lelouch got the code from CC, which in turn makes CC mortal. It is also shown that CC is praying in some kind of chapel before Lelouch is stabbed, which I think could be a "ritual" in transferring the code. Plus, Nunnally saw glimpse of Lelouch's past when he touched him at the end, somehow similar (but not quite) to when Lelouch touched CC and saw her past. ****NOT SURE IF THIS IS A SPOILER FOR THE MOVIE**** And then, the movie Lelouch of the Resurrection happened. (Which, by the way, they say is not canon--and that's a good thing for me.) That's one reason I didn't like the movie. ****I GUESS NOW IT IS****

The show staff officially confirmed that lelouch doesn't have a code, though. Also, Nunnally doesn't "see Lelouch's past" when she touches him. Not only have the writers said that in an interview, but the info C.C. gave us about such visions contradict the idea that Nunnally saw visions. It's been established that such visions are the memories of the RECIPIENT, so Nunnally can't see what she wasn't present at. On top of that, Nunnally's reaction starts before the images are shown, sow e know her reaction was not to those images. In other words, those images were merely for the audience and not something Nunnallys aw

@@IsilionNELE Thanks. I also thought those images were only for the audience, but someone made me rethink about it because of the way it was presented. Regarding the visions, I only got that idea recently while rewatching these episodes in thos channel. I was thinking, if it's only the recipient, then how did Lelouch see CC's past when he touched her while she was showing Suzaku's past?
@IsilionNELE
@IsilionNELE 2 года назад
@@l554446l There are 2 times when he sees her past through code visions. The first time is at Narita Mountain (Stage 11) when Lelouch touches her while she's feeding visions to Suzaku. She clearly "shortcircuits" and all 3 become the recipients of the visions. That why we see the memories of all 3 of them: C.C.'s past, Lelouch's mother and Suzaku's father. We even see Lelouch and Suzaku standing naked next to each other inside the "vision world", which tells us they are all inside the same vision. The other time is during Stage 25 when Lelouch wants to rescue the kidnapped Nunnally. There V.V. is sending the code visions and both C.C. and Lelouch are the recipient, we see this because both Lelouch and C.C. are inside the vision, again naked like the previous time. BTW, the interview where the show staff explicitly confirm Nunnally never saw any code visions is in Mook Animedia (28 January 2009, p.89-90)

@@l554446l It's subjective of course, but I find the show staff clarifying stuff and making sure that the fans understand the story correctly is a positive thing. Leaving things open to "interpretation" is not inherently a good thing because fans' interpretations are often flat out wrong and incoherent and self contradictory, so it's good that writers set things right. For example, the incorrect fan speculation of Lelouch having both a code and a geass is contradicted by the established rules of codes and geasses (you lose the geass when you get a code, ALWAYS). The incorrect myth that you need to activate the code by dying is contradicted by what we see in Turn 15 with Charles who was already immortal and immune to geass BEFORE he shot himself. (we even see Lelouch's "die!" geass on him fail!) The fan misinterpretation about Lelouch giving code visions to Nunnally is contradicted by things C.C. says in season 1 and later in Turn 20, and is contradicted by what we see in the scene itself with Nunnally. All of these are not "interpretations", they are errors, mistakes made by fans. So it's good the show staff care enough that they correct fans' mistakes where necessary. Always happy to help :)

Watch Akito of the Exiled (between season 1&2) and Lelouch of the Resurrection (events after season 2). Since there’s a 3rd season coming next year called Code Geass: Z of the Recapture. Z I believe is short for Zero.
@IsilionNELE
@IsilionNELE 2 года назад
Lelouch of the resurrection is NOT after season 2, it's after the trilogy movies. The 4 movies, trilogy + Resurrection, are a non-canon alternate universe, which is why Shirley is alive in the movies, Mao didn't exist, etc There is no sequel to season 2, the show staff wanted to preserve the ending of R2 and the death of Lelouch in the canon story, hence the creation of the alternate universe. Z of the Recapture is set after Resurrection and is thus part of this alternate universe and is as such not season 3, but season 1 of the movie universe.

Anime recommendation: I would really love to hear your thoughts on the anime movie "No Game No Life: Zero". But it would be best if you watch first the anime series "No Game No Life". It is based on a Japanese light novel series. The anime has only 12 episodes. Sadly, it's not complete yet and I learned that the second season will not follow the light novel. The anime is great, but I'm more interested to know your reaction to the movie.

@@baronbrummbar8691 They didn't retcon anything. In the interview of Continue vol.42 they even explain that the decision to kill off Lelouch was unanimous. And in case you don't know, that interview even predates the airing of the final episode. (obviously the magazine wasn't published until after the episode aired). And in Geass Memories they explain that they had decided to create a story where the main character does evil things and ends up killing himself for redemption BEFORE they even started writing the story. So no, they never retconned anything, his death was set in stone from the very beginning, from before the beginning even. Hell, even in the movie, which is a non-canon alternate universe, they still stuck to that because even there Lelouch was dead for real and C.C. had to literally resurrect his corpse. And the movie makes it super obvious that Lelouch's mark is a NEW power and not a code, e.g. Lelouch gets geassed (movie's picture drama), Shamna gets geassed, Shamna dies, etc, which all proves that Lelouch and Shamna do not have a code but a new power. That's how much this is a point of principle for them!

Nowadays everyone knows the facts thanks to the efforts of the Code Geass community who gathered all the official statements regarding Lelouch's death. The community also fully debunked every single point of the hoax theory which falsely claimed Lelouch had a code. They did a great job dispelling the disinformation and that's why now there's barely anyone who still thinks Lelouch isn't dead in the anime. The show staff have been repeating this for over 10 years in official statements, Lelouch is truly dead and never had a code. On the 2009 DVD C.C. even explicitly confirms that lelouch is really dead and that she mourns his death, so everyone who has that DVD also knows he never had a code. The anime itself also makes it impossible for Lelouch to have a code because that would have broken the established rules and lore. As for the point you brought up: Nunnally didn't see code visions when she touched Lelouch's hand. We know that thanks to C.C.'s explanations about code visions which make it clear that those "images" at the end were not code visions. The scene itself also makes it clear since Nunnally reacts and audibly gasps BEFORE the images are shown, so she isn't reacting to the images. That means the images are just for the audience to show us what Nunnally realized. Nunnally managed to realize thanks to her gift that she can sense the truth when she touches someone's hand. The anime has shown her gift 3 times before, twice with Suzaku and once with Alicia Lohmeyer. Even the show staff have explicitly explained that Nunnally never received code visions from Lelouch. In Mook Animedia (28 January 2009, p.89-90) they said it had nothing to do with codes or geasses, it was nunnally's own gift which made her realize.

I would say the ending gave people exactly what they wanted from it, which is pretty rare really, and that makes it perfect for them. Nothing wrong with that. It was a very satisfying conclusion for the story and the characters and I don't think it has anything to do with experience with storytelling or not.
