COFFEE - A Health Bomb, or Bombing Your Health? - Truths vs Myths

On the one hand we hear COFFEE is a healthy drink, full of anti-oxidants; and on the other, we hear it is addictive and dangerous. Many of us love a good cup of coffee and would like to know which it is? In this video, I review a number of commonly held beliefs, and separate the Truth from the Myth!
1) “Coffee interferes with my Heart Rate, causing arrhythmias, tachycardia or palpitations.” This statement is partly true in that coffee contains caffeine, and caffeine is a stimulant that can temporarily raise your heart rate. This stimulant effect is used by students studying late, or people on nightshift, but it is not dangerous and will not give you a medical condition. Stop the coffee, your heart returns to its normal rate.
2) “Coffee is not suitable for children.” Well, should children be drinking Coca Cola? Coke was invented in the mid-20th century in direct competition with coffee, as a drink to deliver caffeine! The idea behind Coke was that it should become the warm-weather alternative (a cold caffeine drink instead of hot coffee). In time the respective marketing strategies diverged and Coke was marketed at teenagers, and coffee at adults. So if you’re OK with kids drinking Coke, you shouldn’t have any problem with coffee - in fact coffee would be better as it isn’t loaded with sugar!
3) “Coffee will dehydrate you.” While it is true that coffee is a mild diuretic, remember that each mug of coffee contains a mug of water. The diuretic effect of coffee will never make you pee more than you drink, so this is a popular MYTH.
4) “Coffee is addictive.” This one is a MYTH, there is nothing addictive about coffee. People who swear they can’t function in the morning before they’ve had coffee or can’t get through a day at work without regular coffee, are not addicted; they are exhausted, and using the stimulating effect of coffee to keep themselves awake and alert. If this is you, it’s your stress and sleep you need to look at.
5) “Coffee is high in antioxidants.” TRUE. Coffee contains polyphenols which combat aspects of ageing, cancer and diabetes. While polyphenols are found in most plant foods, a lot of the plants we eat are grown in depleted soils so they are lower in antioxidants than they would be naturally, making what we drink more important as a source of antioxidants.
6) “Coffee disrupts sleep patterns.” TRUE (for some people, depending on the time of day.) If drinking coffee in the evenings stimulates you and interferes with your sleep, then don’t do it. Some people have no problem.
7) “Studies have shown that drinking coffee adds years to your life.” This is a MYTH, created by irresponsible journalism. Studies into the health effects of coffee are often “cherry-picked” in the media for sensational, out of context details in the interest of selling more papers or generating more online views. There have been no credible meta-studies of this kind to back up this sweeping generalisation.
8) “It is better to drink tea due to the high caffeine content of coffee.” MYTH. The average cup of tea contains about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. Obviously this can vary from one coffee to the next, and there are herbal teas that may not contain caffeine, but standard coffee and standard tea are very similar in this respect.
So there you have it! Drinking coffee can have benefits, but can be disruptive to your routine and sleep unless you manage it.

New channel for me, my partner suggested it a month ago, I am 80 and worried a lot about my heart's arrhytmia. Three cardiologues, two prescribed Bisoprololo, different doses though, one suggested surgery (ablation) and nr. 3 added Ascryptin. No improvement and I continued to worry, especially at night. You pointed towards Magnesium, Potassium and other electrolytes and after four weeks results have been astounding. Thanks !!

Just discovered your channel and really like your approach. I’m a long time follower of Dr Boz and have keto/carnivore for 5 years. You break it down in a very clear and matter fact way. Even though you don’t seem to have much of a following yet you a down to earth quality that I think will build a following. Your very lack of a gimmick is reassuring. You normal, lived in kitchen, speaking in your natural accent. Well done.

I used to drink two to three cups of coffee per day. I often had intense headaches and I needed an alarm to wake on time, plus getting out of bed in the mornings was a struggle. Since stopping with coffee I don't need an alarm. I wake up between 5 and 6 am, ready for action. The massive headaches are completely gone.

I do feel better when I am off the coffee totally. As someone posted below, it's now more the treatment and processing of foods that's the real problem, for coffee, the pesticides on the beans. Here's what I learned about coffee. It's not the coffee that's the problem, although Arabica is a lot healthier than Robusta. It's the pesticides they use to spray it with. There are more pesticides used on coffee beans than any other product. It builds up and over years damages your organs. Even the best coffee will damage your adrenals over time. It might take decades but it will happen if it's a daily habit. My problems with leg tendons are greatly increased after a cup of coffee. I don't know specifically why. I weaned myself off of it but after a few months I usually crack and have a cup, only to suffer for it later, for weeks. So I don't recommend it. Dr Eric Berg gives good advice on the topic.

I do love my coffee!❤. I limit it to two cups in the morning, and that’s it. But I would disagree with you that coffee is not addictive. There is at least some kind of chemical effect in the brain with the serotonin or dopamine I believe that takes place immediately once you’ve had your first sip. And the guaranteed withdrawal symptoms of extreme, nauseating headache that will last for days unless the coffee routine is reinstated, lead me to believe coffee is certainly addictive. It would take me at least a week to wean myself off coffee slowly without any guaranties of not having withdrawal symptoms. I simply avoid these problems by continuing to drink my coffee😊. I try to be healthy in every other way in my life, and personally, I believe coffee in moderation is actually beneficial to one’s health.(or at least that’s what I’m gonna keep telling myself!😊).

@@shapefixerI can assure you I’m not the only person to get headaches from skipping coffee. A lot of people report the same effect. I’m also sure that there are plenty other people besides yourself that don’t get these kinds of effects when skipping coffee. Maybe some people have more of an addictive personality and can get addicted to coffee, while others might not be predisposed to addiction in general. But yes, for me personally, I do feel addicted, or at least dependent on coffee, and will for certain experience withdrawal effects if I forego my morning coffee for even one day. The headache doesn’t come on right away, but later in the day towards evening. It’s an extremely debilitating type of headache compared to other headaches I’ve gotten. Something I don’t care to put myself through if I can help it. I would have to make sure I didn’t have to work or do anything important for two or three days if I ever wanted to try and quit. Seems like an addiction to me.

Interesting fact: specialists say that green and black tea block the production of diamine oxidase (dao enzyme) that is needed to break down histamines in our body that we are getting with food... In other words, looks like drinking tea is not a good habit if you're allergic or have an inflammation.
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 6 месяцев назад
Also called "histaminase", its an enzyme that disables histamines. If it doesnt do its job, or isnt produced, you would have far great histamine allergic reactions and need anti-histamine medication. I dont know that tea blocks it, but if you're having frequest allergic reactions that respond to an anti-histamine, then I'd agree with you, avoid anything that might negatively affect you histaminase or "diamine oxidase".

I love coffee too, and drink around a half a cup in a typical day. The concern I have heard about coffee is that it depletes calcium, so can be bad for your bones. I have been following you for a couple weeks since I found you, and have gotten strict about no sugar, white flour, etc. in hopes of getting rid of pain. @shapefixer
@shapefixer 4 месяца назад
Honestly i dont think it does. The most common issue with calcium not staying in the bones is low VitD . Vit D3 (together with K2) is vital for sending spare calcium into the bones. Another point - arthritis is not a calcium deficiency; it's damaged or worn away cartilage.

I gotta tell you the truth. I MIGHT consider mushroom coffee for its anti-inflammatory effects however, nothing short of Jesus Christ demanding me to stop drinking a pot of coffee every day, and I’m 59, is going to make me give it up...and here's partly why. I've watched the same TV program 20/20 20-year study on longevity you guys have probably seen. Did you see the whiskey drinking 98-year old? What about the cigar smoking lady at 96? Several life-long smokers. My father’s father lived to be 102. My mother's father lived to be 72. Both ate lots of lard and hard foods of the day. We can only be pushed so far away from the enjoyment of life until that act itself is detrimental, even if it’s healthy. Not to overshare but, I’ve been a habitual fapper my entire life from 11 to today, although I’m down to about twice a day now. According to addicts on RU-vid, ¨It ruined my life!¨Well, it most certainly didn’t ruin mine. If anything , it literally made me a bigger man. So, we’re all different. Food and sex are the tools of religious control too often.

If you suffer withdrawals from a non-essential food, then it is addictive. If you stimulate your body, repeatedly, to perform when it is tired, that will have a damaging effect on the body and will weaken the adrenal system. The presenter has ignored these two aspects to coffee. I would also disagree about the diuretic characteristic of coffee. Drinking too much coffee without replacing the water peed out with water CAN lead to dehydration. BTW, I do drink coffee, but I am aware of the inherent dangers of coffee.
@shapefixer

@danielkramer8586 Hey Daniel, like I said, it affects people differently. I drink coffee, but I have no "withdrawal" of any description when I go without. I just like. Sometimes I drink decaf, I dont even notice the difference (other than that coffee affects my sleep if I drink it in the evenings - so I don't) As for the mild diuretic, it simple math. Nobody gets dehydrated from drinking coffee - that is a myth.

@@martymartin2894 Agreed. It's good to be aware of potential side-effects of a stimulant and appetite suppressant that can be over-used and lead to malnutrition and fatigue. My mom, for instance, won't eat anything until after noon if she drinks her coffee first thing, unless I press her. By the time she eats, she's ready to fall over from hunger. I've known several other people who have had their sleep negatively affected by coffee and other forms of caffeine. I notice that when I eat first or with the coffee, it has the benefit, besides the boost of energy and mental clarity, of preventing heartburn and time-releasing the effects of the caffeine. The buzz last longer! Just be mindful that coffee can mask the signals your body is trying to give you, like hunger and tiredness. Enjoy your coffee and the rest of life, too!

I heard you say coffee is not addictive. Now I question everything you say. It is a fact addictive. Just as much so as heroin. You will have withdrawal symptoms trying to quit. Headaches and even debilitating migraines. And throwing up. This happened to me as a personal experience. Many people will experience these symptoms quitting cold turkey
@bradcampbell5766
@bradcampbell5766 6 месяцев назад
I quit twice in the past year. I have not had any caffeine for a month now no problem, and last year I quit for 6 months also no problem...I went back to it because I really enjoyed it, and the stimulation, but I believe the stimulation is not healthy as it is the body acting on the caffeine which is a poison and so the body is going into active mode to deal with it. Withdrawals would seem to be real for a lot of people, and in the past, I feel like I experienced withdrawals, but maybe that is the body adjusting to a healthier new normal. If you know that is what is going on it makes it easier to quit. I find that many times when we may think we need caffeine we just need more energy, and just simply hydrating with clean water to hydrate can give me the energy I need. Also, apparently much obesity is the result of chronic dehydration that causes unhealthy cravings for food that causes the weight gain, but the issue is chronic dehydration, so by drinking water instead you are giving the body what it really needs. A lot of fruits have good hydrating qualities, and some vegetables eaten raw.
