Kari Northey, a funeral director and embalmer, does a live chat session. She answers viewer submitted questions about the funeral business, embalming, cremation, burial, caskets, urns, and so much more. She also answers questions posed live during the session. What would you ask a funeral director or embalmer if you had them live in front of you?!

We use steel burial vaults here.. sometimes people use just a pine box for the vault but being wood they don't last long until they cave in..in our town we have a few cemeteries that you have to be buried in a vault ..

When a friend's brother died about 2-3 years ago, his urn was buried in a hole about 16" square in the middle of his mother's grave. The hole was probably 2 feet deep so it didn't get down near his mother's vault.
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
Usually about 3 feet down to get to the vault.

We have family members buried in a rural cemetery where people have always just marked plots they want with markers either they have made or purchased. Just little square stones with last name initial. And all the plots have always been free. Then no one would claim that space. In Alabama we have decoration each Mother’s Day and this year right behind our family members was a husband that died in the 70’s and the wife died just recently. They had a joint headstone already made but when they went to dig the grave for the wife, they hit a vault. So someone had been buried there already and they found no identification. So the wife had to be buried in another spot even though her husband and headstone is there. What would happen where you are located if you ran into this? They did mark this grave with a cross that read “unknown”. Thought this would be a good question for your next Q&A. I love your videos. Very informative.

Not too long ago I had stopped by the cemetery to visit my grandparents graves. I noticed a casket just sitting above the ground with no one else around. A few minutes later a worker drove over from a neighborhood across the street. I was really surprised that he had left the casket unattended. I’ve never stayed after a graveside service and just assumed the casket is placed into the ground right away. Are they allowed to leave a casket unattended on the property?
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
It is not the norm...some states require a funeral director stay until the vault is sealed.
@loiskohalyk5593

Whats the differences between a grave liner and a vault. ??
@drewwise5966
@drewwise5966 4 года назад
Lois Kohalyk A grave liner is a reinforced concrete box with drainage holes in bottom and no seals of any kind. Its purpose is to support the earth around the casket. A vault is also a reinforced concrete box, but has additional polystyrene liners or metal liners inside the box and has butyl seals between the lid and box.
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
It is one style of a vault, the simplest style

Hi Kari. I've been to numerous visitations over the years. I didn't know at that time how someone is embombed but I have never noticed any cut or secutures on anyone's neck. How do you hide where you hook them up to accept the fluids?
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
They may have used the femoral in the leg but the sutures in the neck area are often low that you would never notice them
@mikewinn1484
@mikewinn1484 4 года назад
Also, my cousin died last year and her kids were saying how bloated her abdomen was when she died. Was that fluid probably drained during embombing with the trocar? Thanks
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
Yes it could have been drained...if she had been in the hospital it could have been fluid or possibly some gas if she had been dead a while
@drewwise5966

Hey Kari, I have a question for next week. Why is that cremated remains can be buried anywhere from 5-10 deep in one plot and caskets can only go up to 3 tops? It seems to me we could just dig a deeper hole if we know there are going to be several buried in one plot. You can probably tell I’m A little confused on this one. Thanks! Drew.

I was super cautious with it because I didn't know the feeling of everything yet, with the blind feeling of moving inside the body.

Kari, did you get to work on cadavers for restorative art class? Or was it all "dummies". I'm just wondering what kind of situations you were presented with...Was suicide by gun or a smashed in face available for students?
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 4 года назад
We had a cadaver in advanced anatomy type class but not restorative arts. You can do advanced restorative arts classes once licensed and can use cadavers.
