Played it for the first time with a friend, we imidiatly got captured by bandits, after waking up in their camp we was imidiatly wrecked and left stranded outside. After getting killed by monsters we where rescued by a traveler only too be captured and locked in an iron mine, we then bribed the guard, got out and imidiatly got killed, rescued, captured and thrown back in the mine. Best 60 min iv hade in a weary long time, man i love this game :)
Difficulty : a bit like Kingdom Come Deliverance and other games, the world has critters that are too hard for you at first... that you just need to avoid initially until your gear-up. I like that.
Like Cohh said in his streams, your character is realistic. They've been living in the village their whole lives never needing to know how to fight. Would only make sense that being able to kill things in the beginning would be difficult.
I met Cohh through streaming the then No Mans Sky PS4 launch. I've been following since then and recently found this youtube channel. Thank you for these short video's. Not everyone can watch live streams for hours on end so this is perfect!
At the same time if your playing with them online you put your inventory at risk. All the inventory loss complaints that are going around about this game is because of online coop. But I love this game to damn much to let it affect me personally. We needed this game:)
@@SideEffectsmusic well technically you could get ahead a bit quicker as far as gear like weapons and armor are concerned playing with someone that has been playing longer. All they would have to do is be willing to give you said gear. Otherwise you pretty much just have somebody to talk to while you clear dungeons, bandit camps and what not. Only issue with playing with someone else is the story only progresses for the one who is doing the game invite. So the person who joins won't be able to progress there faction even if they joined the same faction as there friend. Otherwise all gear can be warn at any time and every area can be accessed. Nothing is blocked except what little narrative this game has. And that's still able to be experienced for both while they play but like I said only one gets the credit technically.
@@Skychopathic Yeah. Spoiler alert. I probably wouldn't want to do two player unless it was a higher level player joining me on my stuff just to help me out. But then at the same time I wouldn't want them ruining my experience. Hey I guess it's not for everyone. Could be cool getting some gear though
All I can think of while playing this tonight is, man this music and atmosphere makes me so sleepy. This really needs to be a Nintendo switch game. This just screams Nintendo Switch. Wish I was laying in bed right now
Yo if you spent 2 hours trying to kill two bandits in a open world game where you can run around and find chest with better loot or you could have baited the bandits to hyenias dont blame game when your being stubborn
That's why Gothic was so bad ass. Every combat encounter was like a boss fight. Death was around every corner so when you finally got strong and experienced enough with the combat you felt like you achieved something instead of just like your kill 10,000 mindless monsters, collect your level bump. The game sounds great!
Super damn fun game! I got sekiro also played sekiro until outward came out and then outward totally stole the spotlight for me! I do plan to finish sekiro absolutely cuz i am loving sekiro... but gawd damn! Outward is sooooooo fun. I love how much content it has... hidden items, hidden quests, hidden locations, neat little puzzles and treasure hunts like the skeleton guys body. And Dude! All the dungeons have very different assets! Thats the part that really blew me away! Nothing is completely the same! And dude they all look like really nice! Holy shhhhh!
ive noticed the spawns are somewhat randomized sometimes i've only had 1 bandit to deal with sometimes there is a group of 3 together ( stayed clear of them XD) i found that sometimes i will take on 2 enemies at a time depending on what they are equiped with.
Outward is a game that gives your character real stories, at first it will feel punishing but it forces you to learn and this is why Outward is a breath of fresh air most of the RPG's we are served up these days have gone from Morrowind to Skyrim so when you can't just face roll through a game it is shocking. The AAA game developers and publishers are in turmoil ATM people are sick of the shady monetization practices, the releasing of games in alpha test states and giving roadmaps for the future so that by the time the game is actually playable you are sick of it... I say lets go back to small Dev teams making games with passion for the player like Nine Dots did with this gem of a game.
"If you like outward, you will probably love outward" :D It's always great when Cooh compares a game to Gothic. Not many people even remember it but it has always been a very special series to me.
Coming from gothic, Outward immediately had me. People who are saying its too clunky are missing the point. I bought this on a whim because i wanted a new game, and It's now in my top ten games in recent memory.
Took me 2 rage quits, and 3 complete restarts before really getting hooked on this game. I owned the game for like 3 years before actually playing this. Watching Cohh play helped me get a handle on combat. I now have 100.6 hours into my FIRST playthough on original with the two DLCs, and haven't even hit one of the DLC maps yet. Also already thinking about a second run with different skills. Haven't decided if I want to try Definitive Edition or not. Seems like good and bad in that version. Anyway, I haven't had this much fun in a game since Valheim (including watching Cohh play). I cannot WAIT for Outward 2 now.
Put about 25 hours into the Blue Chamber faction and made it through. I didn't explore all that much. I found the combat relatively simple to figure out but I understand why someone used to AAA titles would hate it. Loved the survival stuff, the macro stuff, logistics, navigation, planning ahead. Awesome game. Going to try for a mega full clear run this time around with a bit of magic too as I barely touched the swamp area and never even entered the desert one.
100% with Cohh. Great game, but not for everyone. one quick note though... there are currently some bad bugs if you play on console. If you crash at a loading screen, you lose your backpack contents. Also, i got one character stuck while sliding down a hill, and basically had to delete and start over.
Iv had the crashes but never the item loss (ps4). Which console are you on? Sometimes my map trips up and it shows ciezo instead if the surrounding area when Im out. That was really confusing because it happened when I took my first steps :) There's something endearing about such a bug in a game like this :)
@@HerrFinsternis playing it on xbox one x... When i researched the backpack bug it seems to hit people on both consoles, but not pc. getting stuck in terrain can happen to anyone though, be careful out there lol. says something about the game that I've been willing to start over after losing so much progress.
That just makes the game more immersive. Just pretend that you got robbed during the loading screen while entering the city you were at. When you got stuck sliding down the hill, pretend your character slipped and broke his/her neck. Just use your imagination.
I remember seeing this on Steam Greenlight (when that was a thing) at least 4 years ago i was so excited for it, then i completely forgot about this game until now. Havent played this game yet but i hope i will love it!
This game reminds me of Gothic but the quests don't seem to have multiple paths. The beginning is pretty punishing. I got captured by bandits and lost all my gear. I restarted and went the magic route. I'm pretty much wrecking enemies now. 10 people made this game. Well worth 40 bucks.
There is, and you can fail them and failure has a consequence. So does how you suceeded the said quest. Bribery, finding a sub character who knows a thing about the quest. A lot can happen
I feel like the "this game is too hard" comments are so silly. As you said you learn the systems and it's easy. This isn't a flex thing at all, I really would even like to see some harder more complex bosses and things worked in, because simple but open ended combat systems like this one shine by offering you multiple ways to deal with challenges, so you're not as likely to experience all it has to offer without increasing the difficulty. It's true that Outward doesn't compete with AAAs on amount and quality of most assets, but it does get the most important part right, design philosophy. If this dev can execute on that with a AAA budget they'd be competing with Skyrim.
@@bakermanthony well I can't comment on the default controls because I'm playing on PC with mouse and keys and always customize all my binds, I will say that a lot of the percieved jank is really just people not really understanding how to play around the animations usually in the first few hours. The combat was designed like this intentionally for the most part, it's sort of an intersection between skyrim and souls combat so I think it throws people for a loop because they don't realize how to use particular weapons and how you need tp exploit specific openings on each type of enemy. The way you would most effectively use rolls in particular in closest to DS, whereas your footwork and swinging are a bit more like Skyrim because enemies don't really lock and turn mid swing the way they can in Souls games. Whether or not it's effective to block seems to be a trickier calculus depending on your swing speed, the number and type of enemy you're fighting, and your build. There is some jank / counter intuitiveness with the targetting system and not being able to rebind that OFF from mouse swipes, but oddly the game seems to work best when toggling targetting off and on depending on the second to second situation. The same could be said for Sekiro regarding mouse targetting, however funnily enough Outward's feels more fluid in that one aspect. One thing I'll say is that DS1's PC port was much worse than Outward in terms of onboarding, interface navigation and it's mouse aim specifically. This is not any more jank than that.
Trying it out tonight with hubby and streaming it - really looking forward to it being splitscreen local co-op, seems to be a dying breed these days. It also came out of nowhere for me but I thought you know what, let’s give it a go. I’ll probably suck but what the heck!
I got locked behind the Ghost Fort in the NE of the starter map, and died about 10 times, because it kept spawning be on the north side of the fort, and if you cannot get through the fort your screwed. At least, I couldn't find a way out.
That happened to me when I first stumbled into conflux mountain. Had to flee there after falling off the top, dying, being ressed by the old man at his front door... right in front of a hyena pack. So I run in, stupidly wander into that corridor right off the ledge, have to kill a zound of troglodytes bit can't find the exit to save my life and eventually die. This place was kind enough to spawn me at the entrance where I got to speak with the old man and got some pointers. Got out into the wild to restock and when I got back did find the exit and unlocked my magic. This mixed sense of dread and adventure... it's been a long time since a game did that. Awesome :)
Great breakdown, couldn't agree more. The game is definitely for those that are patient and like some challenge rather than run and gun/slash/flame everything easily. Love the world though once you dive in deep and having a lot of fun playing it and then watching your vids too. Perhaps because Morrowind was my first major RPG I ever played, Im definitely in the "love it" camp for Outward xD
I've been hyped for months for this game and I'm loving every second of it. You definitely hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that the game is punishing, however, becomes easier when you actually take the time to LEARN mechanics. There are too many games that spoon feed you everything. We need games to challenge us. We need more games that don't put us in a mine cart and go for a linear ride. I'm still working on my first play through but already thinking of what I want to do for a second one.
What was your flaming pistol build. I hear pistols have interesting interactions with magic and for my next run I want to be a gunner mage. This run I'm an adept assassin.
I am enjoying every moment of Outward so far. It has been so long I did not feel that feeling of immersion and innovation in a game. So many good ideas!
From start to finish... Fighter Archer Mage Two hander Gun Chackra Sword Archer Fighter Sword and board Mage Fire Ice Poison Crazy crazy crazy!!! Love the game so much.
I do agree that once you learn the combat pretty much 70-90% of the enemies you come across is just a faceroll. I kinda wish they added a "hardcore mode" or something like that, making relatively weak enemies alot stronger because like I said, most of my encounters are faceroll, don't need traps, barely need to waste mana on them and don't really feel the need to drop my backpack either. With this said, still a great game that I still enjoy :)
Mage takes a hit to your other stats right? Is it worth it? Might just go warrior on this game. I stumbled upon a cave and finally got a bigger backpack!!!!!!
I chose mage and only took 3 mana points and that's more than enough. With the mana regen skill and the mana cost reduction from outfits, weapons, backpack, you'll reach a point where you'll never run out of mana. Plus i one shot everything with my fire spells lol
Was thinking of buying this game like two days ago but decided to pass because of the poor combat. However the positives you mentioned swayed me and I've decided to buy it. For a while now I've been looking for an open world RPG with minimal handholding and this might be it. Also it seems that avoiding enemies might be as viable as fighting them as you don't have to rely on destroying everything on your path to get XP and level up.
Yessssa remindse so much of two worlds 2!! I loved that game I know a lot of people did not, but outward is different everyone will like that if their an rpg lover.
I absolutely love Outward. I feel like it's the game of "it's more the journey, then destination". I've spent the majority of the game exploring and going into dungeons then progressing the story. The game may have some bugs and some lackluster quests (also wish the game gave you a mount or atleast fast travel), but Its still a good game. IGN did it dirty by giving it a 5/10, but then again their reviews aren't that reliable, plus the reviewer didn't seem to be playing right.
Have you tried the new expansion of Grim Dawn? it's called the Forgotten Gods. It's pretty good. Gotta check it out. Highly recommended. Nice playthroughs cohh. Keep it up!
He didn't even finish Grim Dawn. He played for one session, and liked it, but it didn't draw him in like Path of Exile. POE is the only that type of game he actually like. He was actually kinda burned out of does type of games after Diablo 3. It will be hard to get Cohh to play Grim Dawn with his POE addiction, and how most other ARPG will be kinda light on features in comparision.
I got a problem pls help me :) So i started playing and everything was fine until i just wanted to go back in town and then suddenly as i hit enter i had no sound and i got no loadingscreen and i could not interact with anything anymore. I restarted the game and tried to go into town again and the same thing. I reinstalled the game and downloaded it as well but still the same. Then i deleted all save files and started completly new. After i talked to the first npc on the coast who sad i should sleep in the bag i tried it and now its still the same and an infinite resting circle. I cant find anything about this bug..
Im sad about the world and towns they feel to dead, like no matter what time the blacksmith always thier always hitting the anvil, it gets kinda dumb, and the whole your just a normal person goes out window when you find magic and no it not hard to cast magic what so ever
This game I didn’t pay any attention to before it released, and I didn’t even buy it the day it game out. It’s been less than a week and it’s my top game of all time and I can’t stop playing this game
for me this game is quiet insane you know ....i die a lot when i go outside the town at first play but everything just fine when you learn the game how the combat work....but man cooking is the best for me
Bought it and refunded it. Honestly didn't think it was super difficult; I like how it made me think. I just didn't like the janky combat, world design or really just the combat systems.
I got this game and imo its just a ok game. They many things that good and many that bad, the 4 maps are nice but imo they should be more areas and most the dungeons are really really short. Also this game not hard at all dunno why people keep saying it hard, maybe if you can not read a map its hard lol
i love so much this game but i hope they change the "bond dependand skills" hate to wait 500 seconds to use my chakram kinda sucks lol and add more variety to the mage class cuz it is way to basic
Cohh! Have you seen the rumours of a Witcher 3 new DLC coming this year? It's on polygon and kotaku I think, its said to be huge adding over 100 hours of content! There just trying to tackle one problem or something? I think it has to do with April fools... (sorry)
I didn't enjoy how empty Outward feels. Gothic and Risen have so many NPCs, quests and stories everywhere. It guides you through the game. Outward felt like a pure sandbox with no goals.
I'm gonna tell you what the other factions are fun to play through I beat the game 4 times and still exploring and finding new things and hitting my 5th play through xD
@@ansiokio he wants it on GOG so he can download it illegally and not worry about it. This was a small team of about 10 people so support the game, buy it on EPIC (yea i know), but the devs get a much bigger cut of the profits, for additional content.
@@ansiokio why should I pay for DRM? One example, if I will get banned on steam I will lose everything. If I get banned on GOG I will still have games I downloaded. Steam is for idiots tbh.
The problem with "looking at the combat" is that the combat LOOKS fine. It's how it feels that is wonky. Compare the feeling of the combat to Ashen, or Dark Souls 3, or Witcher 3 on the hardest mode, and Outward's combat just feels poorly made. That being said, I love the game and recommend it... I'm just disappointed in the combat.
Why do I get the feeling that the dude on steam that left the bad review was a games journalist...they seem to be allergic to games that have any kind of challenging gameplay.
i can't understand how people enjoy this game. How do you get over that combat system? In my opinion it's just a souls wannabe combat mechanic that gets way too many things wrong. Also I did come by many game breaking bugs, such as every time I dropped that satchel backpack it would get stuck mid air forever and everything inside was lost. Also loading the game sometimes would backtrack my inventory, so I'd lose many of the last items I aquired. It does have many cool ideas, and I mean many, I just cannot get over the bugs and crappy combat. And by god believe me I tried.
