Just finished the game, some tips: visit all map locations, for this, boost perception as much as you can, boost persuasion because a lot of exp comes out of it. For your main Character don't play anything crazy, play a barbarian or something like that. Make sure you have a cleric, everything that gives or offers passive or active freedom of movement get it. For the advisors use the right people, for example the warden should be someone with high constitution (look for the right Stat for each role) . On Kingdom mgmt try to rank up stats as a priority , then problems, then curses, then projects, then opportunities. For rank ups, after 40 level ups you will get a project to reduce the time to 7 days instead of 14. Don't stress over time, it's manageable. FINISH all companion quests and always pair Jaethal and Tristan on their companion quests.
I totally agree. I've been a huge HUGE Baldur's Gate 2 fan since it's original launch. For me, personally BG2 was always the best cRPG ever made, until I gave Pathfinder Kingmaker a try. I was surprised how quickly I told my friends that Pathfinder Kingmaker has at least the potential to be en par with BG2. They never ever heard me comparing any game to BG2 so far in all those 20 years. I told my friends, even invited one of them to play with me together on a rainy afternoon, so he could see what an absolute amazing game this was. After I finished my first playthrough I immediately rolled a second main character, increased the difficulty and started my 2nd playthrough. Without taking a break. Not even BG2 could do this to me ... I'm at 300+ hours now total, and I have already planned a 3rd playthrough ... You like cRPGs? GET Pathfinder Kingmaker. N O W!
Hit the nail on the head, all said and done. But for me AD&D 2ed. guy here i have some difficulty finding the right picks for my classes. Nothing else compares closely with BG2.
Bradley Curry the story. The setting. The characters. The combat. The world. The mechanics. The music. The replayability. Pretty much everything. And its HUGE. Just like BG2.
Bought Pathfinder and started playing it. Loved it and enjoyed your videos on it. Helped me out a lot. Rolled a duel wielding Ranger. Found a Midevil deadpool portrait and made him madman chaotic neutral character. Was so much fun. Some of the CN lines of dialogue were spot on for DP. Thank you for the videos. Gonna roll a new toon and tear through it again. Maybe Lawful good.great freaking game! Thank you again for the videos!
Thanks to you Cohh I've started playing PF:KM and after 30h+ I am really thankful for that. It's a great game, and every time I discover something new, but damn sometimes fights are really hard.
I love playing this game, got into it after watching you on twitch, unfortunately has to stop watching you on twitch to avoid any spoilers!! 100 hours through and only 25% done , love it and thank you for introducing me to it 👍😀😍
This game is a classic now. I will definitely play through it again. I had to stop when it first launched too, started playing again when Cohh did and loved it.
All the timed quests mostly ruined the game for me. I feel like have to constantly stress about what quest to do next rather than explore the world or do what I want.
I bought this on launch it was a loading screen sim in a buggy mess I am still playing now this but still haven't finished it I lost count how many times I restarted I love how they allow mods and not lock out achievements
Use mods! Make the game much better. Also use SSD if possible, makes loading a lot faster. Also mods to manage your kingdom from everywhere. It might change the game, but I consider them Quality of Life
@@Zorish373 Thanks I will look into mods. I have done 1 complete run since but the End dungeon even at current build is buggy which caused 2 failed runs. I will revisit soon before Horizon zero dawn comes out.
I am now on my third play-through of this game. My first, I had to quit during the end of Act 2, I was maybe 60+ hours in. Bugs. Lots of bugs. My second play-through (about a month later) I had to stop about midway through Act 4, the storyline of which I was LOVING. Bugs. Lots of bugs. I was playing hard difficulty my first run, then challenging for my second, cause I was so anxious to catch up to where I had been. Fast forward to now. I am now at the beginning of Act 4, on hard difficulty, another 80 hours into the game. I have not encountered ONE SINGLE BUG. The load times are exponentially improved, the quest issues have been resolved, the sheer amount of work OwlCat has done to get this game to this state blows my mind. Now, I'm not Cohh, this isn't my favorite CRPG of all time...however, it is REALLY GOD DAMN GOOD. I personally think Divinity OS:2 ranks just above this on my list of best CRPGs of the last 15 years because of how original it is, the multiplayer support, and the mind-boggling number of ways that combat can go depending on party and skill composition. HOWEVER, I think in it's current state, this incredible game is better than Pillars of Eternity, both 1 & 2 (both of which I really enjoyed), better than the Witcher Series (let the hate begin, even though I do love 2 and 3, so deal with it) , better even than Dragon Age Origins which I've put so many hours into it makes my head hurt thinking about. Larian Studios, Obsidian and now OwlCat have proven themselves to be fan-centric studios in my opinion. They are committed to their games, their fans, and their fans' feedback. CDPR has been the only studio I've been able to say that about until the last couple of years, since Bethesda, Bioware and Blizzard all seem to have completely lost sight of making good games for the fans, instead of games that are designed to make them more money and pull the wool over their customers' eyes as they greedily stretch their hand out to your wallet. In summary, BUY THIS GAME...and follow-up...OWLCAT RULES! Can't wait for Outer Limits and Cyberpunk 2077 - but who's coming out with next great Fantasy CRPG? Thoughts?
Intrestingly enough I've played and loved every game you mentioned except for pathfinder, The only thing keeping me from getting it right away is that the combat seems to be lackluster compared to OS 2
@@simran789654 The Combat is so different from DOS2 , but if you liked Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity etc...then you will like the combat in Pathfinder. Especially on challenging or better difficulties. It is real time with pause as applied to DnD rules. And let me tell ya', on hard, I spent more time buffing for most of the difficult battles, than the battle itself took. YOU HAVE TO THINK about who and what you're fighting and prepare accordingly.
My god is this is considered acceptable i don't want to imagine the state of the game at its release, it must have been a nightmare. Im just playing it for the first time and some things are rubbing me the wrong way, bugged feats, errors in some classes description, hidden timers and the constantly increasing size of the save files that make loading take more time the more you play (2.0 gb savefiles? wtf). Such a shame, game has great potential. Oh well, at least i didn't spend full price for it.
Cohh's passion is awesome! Love the streams and the channel :) Loved both the breakthroughs and I'm excited to do my own withing the next couple months
I came around to play Pthfinder Kingmaker once again after I watched this video a few weeks ago and after learning about that big patch with the turn-based option. I had played the game when it came out and did not finish it, not quite. Almost finished it, i should say. In this current state, the game is on the same level with Baldur's Gate 2 for me. It is that good. he developers have done an awesome job to fix the game, and furthermore add to it in so many ways. During this new playthrough, I can feel the effort put in since release on every corner of the game.
Now that it's -50% on Steam, I was searching for a recent review as the gaming industry doesn't give you lots of second chances. I know the game was bugged in horrible ways in the beginning, but lots of people also realize that the developers did not give up on it which is remarkable.
my first playthrough took me 122 hours and I'm feeling like I've rushed through the game like crazy. For my next attempt, I'm aiming at 200 hours at the least! Thanks for your beautiful stream which got me interested in PF:KM in the first place! 🌞
@Corrin Prey and Fallout NV really are not bad games. Prey is actually pretty damn good. Didn't play any of the other games u mentioned so i can't rate them.
@Corrin Except Prey, Alpha Protocol and Fallout New Vegas are actually all great games. The others, are, indeed, not very good. Your edginess definitely needs more work.
@Corrin What are you talking about? Fallout NV is one of the best fallouts ever made, Prey is one of the most original FPS's ever made, Tyranny is of the most entertaining RPG's released the last couple of years, Wasteland 2 is the spiritual successor of the original Fallouts, really well made as well.
I too was in at the start and was unable to complete my playthrough, it was a buggy mess and I had one final rage quit and deleted it, seeing this gives me hope and I will reinstall and give it another go, I was a HUGE Baldurs Gate, NeverWinter Nights and Dragon Age fan, I so wanted to like Kingmaker, I could see its potential but it was just too buggy
Yeah would've been awesome considering the quality of those voice lines they had in game. Let's hope they earned enough money to increase these amount in their next game.
I am a huge CRPG fan but Kingmaker didn't grab me at all. Some of the things about Kingmaker that put me off were the graphics style, the kingdom management system, and the lack of voice acting. The traditional DnD combat system I also didn't like, I prefer when games iterate with their own stylistic spin like PoE and DoS. But, Kingmaker does have some aspects that I appreciate, such as the immersive world that is reactive to your influence, the extensive interactions with companions along with their personal quests, and the sheer amount of available gameplay.
yeh i found that true as well. Also a lot of areas are recycled , there really are not many areas in that game that look amazing. Because of that i didnt really enjoy expoloring. Games like poe just have some amazing locations that really look fantastic, really makes me want to explore and be in the world. A lot of kingmaker locations are just very generic areas without much interest in my opinion. The kingmaker management system is so rng at times save scumming becomes a must at higher lvls which i really dislike. I think thats when the Direct Dnd port into games can be a negative, kinda why i enjoyed poe or dos for coming up with there own system that work better in a game.
I agree, when it 1st came out it was a buggy mess after chapter 02, it really hurt how this game was received. Hopefully Owlcat learned the lesson & won't put out Wrath of the Righteous until it's bug free. I adore it, especially with Turn Based mode now an official thing. Regarding what you mentioned about Varnholds Lot: it ties directly into the events of the game folks. My advice there is to play the game until you defeat the Stag Lord & start building up the barony, then go to Varnholds Lot, then back to main game after finishing Varnholds Lot. Afterward at a certain chapter/point in the main game you'll get a reminder to import the Varnholds Lot data.
It was watching this video that tipped me over the edge of buying Kingmaker and I'm incredibly glad it did. I'm a relatively recent convert to CRPGs but I've tried to make up for lost time, playing as many as I can get my hands on, and Kingmaker ended up eclipsing everything else for me. It was quite a ride.
Agree 100%. It's a little obtuse to get into but such a rewarding experience. I quit early in the lifespan but ended up clearing about a month before your eventual finished playthrough and I just hope this game gets long-term recognition in the same way that something like VTM:B did and I'm looking forward to anything further from owlcat
For anyone on the fence to pick this up: I'm really liking this game so far on hard mode, but you have to know what you are getting yourself into, especially if you haven't played Pathfinder before. Bugs are mostly gone. Expect to min max, save before every fight, look up stuff on google/youtube/reddit, be utterly lost at times, and just be in for a difficult game in general. This game is more difficult than Baldur's Gate, Pillars, or Divinity, on equivalent difficulties, and explains a lot less. Also, there isn't major questing in a large city like in other crpgs (slight letdown for me). This game is heavily focused on exploring the large map, combat (to resolve quests), and kingdom management. Quests provide the major bulk of xp, and have interesting choices based on alignment, but aren't really "deep," as they have more of a focus on simply adventuring. Would recommend, but you need large pools of patience, and an appreciation for systems and scope above storytelling and polish.
I think it's pretty obvious that the developers really had the passion their work. Sure the game released buggy and unfinished. And that's not great. But they really did stick with it without giving up and made it into something amazing in the end.
Classy vid, good watch as well. I bought at release, really liked a lot of what it had, sat it down for some troubles with bugs but knew I would come back... Enhanced Edition out last week, so here we go...
well i needed confirmation like this from somebody before making a purchase and i think you convinced me to finally buy this game after 6 months of being on wishlist waiting ;)
Signing your opinion. As an oldskool CRPG Fan who started with the liked of Bards Tale 1 and PoR, this game is en par with Baldurs Gate 2. A gem that just needed to be polished. Maximum Respect to Owlcat.
Glad to hear your thoughts. I can never really trust steam reviews good or bad based on how users treat their own steam reviews. I plan on finishing POA 1 and 2 then buying this hoefully.
I snapped with this game when it got released when I didn't realized that they will destroy my city as an event even though I have defences and that was game over. I thought it will be a fight just like they have attacked the city for the first time (first attack). First attack was well communicated to the player and I knew what to do, the second one left me hanging unable to do anything but I was expecting to see enemy for fight. I wonder if that experience is the same now.
Also, I keep telling people that this is first CRPG ever (and I've literally played them all) to actually make you feel like you are sitting around a table with your friends, playing pen and paper and not a computer game. Seriously. I've never had any game unlock my creative potential as a gamer in the way PF:KM did this for me.
I dont know about Kingmaker because I havent extensively played it to its core yet, but what made BGII great was that even after my 6th playthrough, I still discovered new things, secrets, new items (Pantaloons anyone) locations etcetc. The items had lore ...I was hoarding every named items just to read everything on my free time, without even playing the actual game. From my experience, Kingmaker doesnt reach that scale yet (Dont know if its planned by the dev to keep adding content or not to that extent) BUT i do admit that Kingmaker scratched an itch that even Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 couldnt. Is it because its D&D, or the setting or I dont know, but there is something that attracts me to Kingmaker. Now, if only I could make up my mind on which friggen class to make as main character so I could start again, Ive been overthinking it for the past week and its killing me.
To add to my comment, I must tip my hat for the dedication of the devs, who kept on going into improving the game every months (which is way better than most AAA games recently released ...that I wont name)
Voice talent is pricey (in most cases), so they have to do an analysis if the cost is worth the investment. Linzi is great. Amiri is a little over done, but still decent. Tartuccio, the little bastard, is well voiced. Valerie is really good. Not many large complaints in Chapter One (I have only had the game for three weeks so far), so no info on later NPCs or party members.) But so far, so good!
I wanted to try Pathfinder for a while and I finally bought it last week due to this video. I'm 30 hours in, just started chapter 4 and I absolutely adore this game. For me it's easily the best cRPG since BG2. There are some minor flaws concerning UI and balancing, but overall Pathfinder is exactly how I like my oldschool RPGs.
I wanted to like this game so badly. I wanted a new RPG but I just couldn't get into it. I put 10 hours into it, attempting to do as much as I could. But the constant passing of time and requirement to help the town took away from my desire to explore an RPG world and forced me to constantly make adjustments to stop exploring and work on Kingdom. Plus the dice rolls killed me.
Just started playing last night (an hour in) ... Should I do the DLC first? Or is the DLC something that happens during the game? Do I need. A separate new game for DLC only?
Are you talking about Varnhold's lot? You should start it in Act 2 and that one, in particular, is it's own save file. But what's cool is you can import the save file of the DLC into your main one, once you finish the DLC. And you'll see as you go what that means. For the other DLC it's in your main game
Need some advice. I killed the cyclops lich and returned to my kingdom only to be immediately called to aid Brevoy against barbarians, and the Bloom is back. My success rate for kingdom management events is 35% despite the fact i made sure that none of my advisors are ever inactive. It's like the difficulty for kingdom management has been trippled while i was doing the Varnold vanishing quest. This is chapter 4 right? Like WHEN THE HELL will i ever have time or resources to do any of the projects? On top of everything my councilor is gone, and nobody can replace him, and i still have no one to manage the inteligence. It's starting to feel like a boring stressful chore.
After doing the Diablo series and the Witcher series I was glad to see POE on the shelf, played Tyranny first though and I didn't think the party was big enough. It's stuck in my head after playing all of the Balder Gates games that 6 is a party and 4 is a bore lol. I was halfway through the last DLC of POE 2 when Pathfinder came out and I haven't looked back since. Can't see playing another game unless it's in this games neighborhood of deep diving. Absolutely loved it and really didn't come across any game stopping bug like so many others, but i'm not as good as those guys/gals either so I probably didn't get a chance to make it to one lol. Absolutely loved this game
I honestly came into the game with low expectations but it's some of the best story and character writing I've seen in a long time. For me that makes a game, so thumbs up. And definitely play Varnhold's Lot! It was one of my favorite parts of the game and it integrates seamlessly with the main campaign.
The writing (especially for companions/quests) doesn't hold a candle to that of something like Baldur's Gate II (moreso with the expansion Throne of Bhaal) or Planescape ... but it is nonetheless a good game because the system on which it is based: Pathfinder, which is a solid rpg system.
Haven't finish the game yet. But I am loving every minute of it. This is the RPG I wanted and didn't know about... Heck is the RPG I needed. It's a great game with great characters. I also think it's probably the best crpg I have played to this point. Cheers!
After 161 hours on my 1st playthrough I'm eagerly waiting to get the DLCs and start again. It's been sooo many years since I felt so addicted to a game. That being said, BG2 still holds the top spot in my heart. The AWE I felt the first time seeing the red dragon or the first time the demi-lich completely destroyed me, the first time I crafted the Crom Faeyr is something I've never felt since then. Not to mention the ton of stuff "the darkest day" add-on added.
I can confirm it: the game in its current state is nearly bug free. I am in the last chapter now and I really love the game. Deep story, an incredibly complex combat system with literally hundreds of spells and items, likeable characters. The current price of 12 Euros is really ridiculously underrated. Ok, there are some things missing like full voice acting, open world, more diverse scenery etc. but to be honest, I don't care so much about this because the game is so good.
@@smilingbandit6900 you realize you can't right? Some monsters are so overturned you literally can't do this. It isn't difficulty, it's the illusion of one of my problem. Just look at the owlbear stats on this game.
Playing in challenging, you sound like someone who found enraged/ferocious owlbears a couple of levels earlier than they should. Besides a couple of owlbears "bosses", they are not really that difficult to handle, they hit like trucks and have a lot of hps, but they are slow, with shitty will and defence.
@@alfgui3295 no I found them at the level they should. I was playing on normal. Owlbears at normal have babs and strength scores that are off the charts. There is no reason why the caged owlbear is more dangerous than the actual Stag Lord and his guys combined.
The game is incredible - now that is - and I feel a lot more will be coming for Pathfinder CRPGs There are SO many amazing adventure paths they can chose to make! This is the best CRPG and it has a huge future going ahead.
My favorite CRPG since BG2. Played it for almost 1000 hours now and finished it for the first time XD ...luckily I didn't have too many bugs and I've been playing it since it came out. If I had one minor complaint I would say the ending is a little bit too long.
Cohh states that the good and evil paths through the game are both well-developed and distinct. Can the same be said of the lawful and chaotic paths? Are there strongly divergent choices to be made along that axis as well, enough so that a lawful good playthrough would feel significantly different from a chaotic good one?
It would be one of the best games of all times if it had embraced mods. Imagine it with 10% of Baldurs Gate Mods Community ? Hope they consider it on their next game, that I can hardly wait. Its rare I spend money in games these days, but I bought 3 copies, for me, my girlfriend and a student of hers, just to support OwlCat. Good job !!!
As odd as the comment may be, I love this game and have not gotten much farther than middle of act 2. Why? Because I keep making new characters of different races and classes. I think so far I have 28 different characters that I have taken to act 2. I'll finish the game at some point, but even after 6 months, I'm still having fun making new characters.
Yes I absolutely loved every second of Pathfinder. When I finished it I checked my GOG activity feed and I couldn't believe my eyes when I seen how many hours i put into the game. 448 HOURS!! Now thats a game! Cannot wait till Owlcat comes out with something new. They are some of the best, talented and most dedicated developers ever. Absolute masterpiece of a game.
One of the big reasons why I couldn't get invested into Pathfinder as much as other big cRPGs is the toxic community that surrounds the game. Back when I played, on every forum or chat I went, it seemed like 50% of people were hating on the game, and 50% were defending the game by shitting on other games. I've rarely seen such a polarizing and honestly stressful interactions regarding an RPG. Whenever I went to read up on some Pathfinder builds or whatever, I'd quickly become appalled and grossed out. Compare it to Witcher or Divinity communities, where most people seemed to just enjoy the games and talk about them. Sure, there are fights there too, but they are about the game itself. In Pathfinder forums, not three posts can pass without someone shitting on Divinity, POE or some other game. Like, seriously? Incredibly toxic environment. Maybe it's better now, but that was my experience a couple of months back.
love ur vids. got me into pathfinder kingmaker, got dlc and trying to finish my 2nd run. first was too buggy. also looking forward what comes next, maybe a sequel or expa
Watching you fall in love with this game was almost as fun as playing it myself. While I don't rate it quite as highly as you do, I definitely understand where you're coming from. Thank you very much for taking us viewers through this marathon slog.
And that's exactly why I could never list it as the best CRPG. Save scumming was generally a choice someone made when they didn't like a particular outcome due to either being unprepared, or just wanting to retry that same scenario in a different way. This game actively encourages, and almost requires save scumming to get anywhere with the awful kingdom management. The game is like a classic CRPG merged with Sim Kingdom and it never feels good. Want to go exploring? Too bad you have to constantly babysit the clock on kingdom events until you have more than a few lands claimed.
I hope they re-release the game with full DLC's and the reviewers give it another chance. I really want to see press take the game back into their scope at see is it the same game still. Probably isn't i'm hoping.
Take it slow and dont be shy with 2 things: 1. Looking at guides or wikis. 2. Restarting if you dislike your character. Alternatively if you like your character but you crippled him/her during creation without noticing, you can lower the difficulty, although I think cRPGs are best played on the harder modes, since so much of them is fighting.
Literally the ONLY complaint I have (and it's not even really a complaint because I also love it at the same time) is because of how long the game is, I need such a big window of time before I can play through it again. When I'm playing this game, it's worse than it was when I was playing MMORPGs as far as wanting to be left alone and neglecting my family lol
I thought it was a very mixed bag myself. Some great individual story arcs and chapters between certain companions and crises, but as a whole it doesn't have the meat to compete with the best games out there like Planescape: Torment or Mask of the Betrayer, or a Baldur's Gate II or Pillars of Eternity even. The combat is also a hot mess throughout, and very much a core component of the experience.
Agree with you except the PoE part, that game is doo doo. Also im currently playing this game for the first time and it is still very buggy, don't want to imagine the hot mess this game was if they think this is an acceptable state. Neverwinters nights 2 still has the crown as the best D&D game while planescape after so many years still has the best writin i have seen in a game.
dam nothing to watch to go to sleep to. Not that your vids make me sleep but after a day of hard work i love to watch someone play and at some point i drift away to dreamland. Cant wait to see your varnhold vids. Some day i will join you on your live channel. Wish you all the best from germany. C u^^
Supposedly you can have the political stuff auto handled. I saw it on another video. I wrote to the video creator and will let you know when I hear back from him. I will let you know what the option is called.
I agree. First has painfull and unbalanced, now i respec my compagnon and i run over everything. (Thanks to 10 years of playing DnD 3.5) Best crpg EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about the issue where every summoned creature received an entry in the character file and never deleted making it grow obscenely large and making the loading time in the game take forever? Did they fix that nonsense?
Glad to see you give this your thumbs up. It's been sitting in my library, waiting for patches. The only thing that struck me as a little weird was that you enjoyed all the companions. I think you're the first person I've heard who holds that opinion :)
Sounds good. I'm just getting into cRPG's but I'm not a PC player. If this game ever makes its way to console in a few years I'll definitely pick it up. I really enjoyed Original Sin and I am playing and enjoying Wasteland 2. After WS2 I got Pillars and Divinity 2 so I will be set for a while.
i am completly neutral. i love rpgs but i never liked crpgs, since i didnt grew up with them (not a pc gamer back then). i tried finishing baldurs gate so many times and i never did. never ever has a game kicked me so hard in the nuts as baldurs gate. it was absurd for me. like assassinations in a tavern while you are on 1 hp. while on 1 hp you miss 100 times in a row only to see the spider kill you etc...ridiculous. kingmaker, ive seen only your walkthrough like the first 3 episodes and i have to say: i was very impressed. the voice acting is SO good in this game and the characters and stories are interesting. i have no affinity towards crpgs games, i even dislike larian for their new path (i really liked the old larian). so yeah, this game is actually intriguing.
Hey cohh playing king maker and was wandering how arcana work I want to be a dragon disciple but I need 5 in arcana and was wandering how I can get my arcana stat to 5, I'm playing as a Magus and it says I've a +5 to arcana but says I don't when I try to level into the Dragon disciple can you help me
