Just a thought.. New coilovers, days after setting initial ride height, will settle anywhere from a quarter inch up to half an inch or even more. If the coilovers were setup with very little spring preload, you now have a spring that's taking up less space, and a loose spring can cause clicking and/or clunking. Now, if you're getting a clicking when you turn your wheels from side to side while parked.. Yes, a little grease on the ends of the springs and grease to the top bearing will help.

I FOUND THE FIX 👇: (TLDR problem shooting list at the bottom) I had rattling in the front coilovers, so i tried adding grease generously and it didn’t work. I made sure to check the top center assembly nut at the top and raised the front coilovers by just half an inch. Turns out that was the problem. It might have been one of those things but it finally work and my ride quality feels 1000% better. TLDR: I fixed the rattling by 1:Checking all nuts and bolts (and i mean all) 2: Make sure the spring rate is good (1 more adjustment wrench’s thickness compressed than 0 preload) 3:Put Lithium grease (a generous but not copious amount) at all points of moving contact. (bottom of spring, top of spring, and in between the rubber collar thing over the spring at the top of the coilover) 4:Check for wheel-well rubbing. I raised the front coilovers half an inch and the crackle sort of sound coming from the wheels stopped. TIP: When adjusting ride height using the adjusting collars, if still on the car, this can increase your spring preload. make sure to reset your spring preload whenever adjusting ride height. TIP #2: If you have a bouncy set of coilovers, this means your springs are set WAY too tight. It’ll feel bouncier than a kangaroo on a trampoline if you made this mistake that i made. Don’t panic, you didn’t buy bad coilovers (unless you bought it from a shady guy that drives a dodge neon with a missing front bumper and a spoiler larger than your driveway). To fix this, set your spring so that the spring is held by the coilover collars, but not compressed. From there, use your collar adjustment wrenches provided by the vendor, and tighten it from 0 preload, the thickness of the wrench. I hope you guys get a lot of value from the mistakes i made.

hey Jake Lancenese... bro.. guy... i was on my way to get coils and just throw in the towel on my front setup entirely. i saw your video by chance after watching so many others and attempting so many things to remedy my ugly popping knocking clicking and sticking problems and on one last hope i went and bought some lithium grease in a can.. i bought valvoline lithium grease meant for ford and lincoln for my ST focus and took my time really killing it on both front coils in every nook and cranny... and the whole front end is entirely different.. like brand new... seriously ... actually better than new. so thank you very much. and screw everyone ... do your thing with that hair brother. i think your nickname should be big bird...and if that's cool then i'll be your damn Mr. Snuffleupagus .. i truly owe you a lot of thanks.. i have been going crazy with this for the last month now. most importantly however i need to make sure others hear something.. i put spray can lithium grease on the same areas a month ago in fact i've put it on multiple times but that stuff actually ends up sticky a few days later... so when luckily i saw someone ask about the spray i noticed you replied that you used actual grease... so i thought then that this factor could be the ticket... sure enough it is what i should have done long ago thank you big bird

@RoleyChiu
@RoleyChiu 4 года назад
This is my hunch too on my BC's. I figured the spring needs some rotational leeway to spin a bit due too the mechanical forces on it. One time I sprayed WD-40 all around the spring perch and it silenced it for a while, which also suggests that those two surfaces just need some lubrication. I'll add grease on the weekend. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

On my 2005 Tundra I changed: upper ball joints, lower ball joints, inner tie rods, lower tie rods. This happened after changing the strut assembly. I spray some WD-40 and the popping is now gone! I have the same issue using H&R springs. I'm going to try this and hope it works. The noise is annoying. I tightened all the nuts and bolts you mentioned, changed the sway bar bushings, and greased both upper and lower ball joints, nothing has worked yet. I will lube where the spring meets the insulator and also add tubing to the top "dead coil" of the spring.

@@nestorjohnsalazar9242 The clunk that I am experiencing was on my right side and it happens when the steering wheel is turned completely to the left and I'm coming to a stop (like when doing a three point turn). I added the tubing on the "dead coil" of the spring and the clunk was still there. My last thing to try is to replace the springs. My rear driver side of the car also sags half an inch more than the passenger side rear of the car. I think the springs are just worn. I'm not buying H&R springs anymore. I plan to try Tein springs next.

@@RX-8GT That's great that you narrowed it down to the end link. I have Moog links in good condition and regreased them and that didn't change anything. Over the years I realized that Moog's quality control has gone down. Next time I will replace my end links with OEM end links so that I know for sure that's not the problem. I have the same issue - clicking over bumps. ApexI N1 Coils. I will try this tonight, but from what it sounds, your preload is so loose that your springs are loosing contact with the mount. I'm glad the grease application "resolved" your issue, but it just sounds like you're just masking your loose preload. My preload was loose as well, but I have adjusted it since and still have the same issue. I am waiting on a replacement strut on warranty. Thanks for the video.

Jake, I haven't tried the lithium grease yet. I just installed new rear coilovers yesterday in my '05 RSX Type S. The very first drive after I backed out of my driveway I immediately got a clunking thump thump thump from the passenger side rear of my car as I drove forward in a straight line. I immediately turned around and jacked up the car and took off the wheel. I checked all of my bolts from top to bottom. I will check the bolt under the dampening knob. Otherwise could I coincidentally have a bad rear sway bar end link on that side? Absolutely no noise coming from the driver side rear. The car is a good inch lower now in the rear. It doesn't sound like a rubbing noise. It's audible from outside the car as well. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Nice car man!

I have this same metal on metal clunking sound and it has been driving me crazy. I only hear it at low speeds. Now that you mention the grease method it does sound like it could also be it in my case but my coilovers have a metal perch that goes on top of the main spring and in between the rubber insulator beneath the top hat. I would hate to have to remove the coilovers to grease that area so hopefully I can loosen the locking collars enough to put some sil-glyde in there.
@kingly7946
@kingly7946 2 года назад
Me as well, I just paid for an alignment, so definitely don't want to take them off. What I'm assuming may be happening is the spring moving back and fourth hitting the top hat. If that's the case, grease is a temporary fix. I'm going to do a bit more researching and see what I come up with.
