I must tell you that you so far gave the best information on these lights then the other guys on youtube. I was debatting on which one to get and now after seeing that I am going for the COLBOR CL60 GREAT VIDEO

Glad I could help. I remember when Amaran was the smaller brand back in the days. Now they got too big that they forgot the QA on their products. My Amaran 200D also has Fan issue sadly. You can youtube it as it was shipped to reviewers back then with a bad fan. Their sourcing parts is tragic.

Great video! Can I ask if you ever run any battery tests? I found another review claiming the Amaran 60X has half the battery life than similar 60w Godox and Nanlite Forza. Your power consumption tests (also the one with the Nanlite Forza) shows that the Amaran is conuming more power but it's not even close to double. If you have any feedback on this I would really appreciate. Looking for something lasting as long as possible in the 60w cob range.

@colborlight Looks like the on/off switch is not mechanical and if I toggle the power to the light, it does not comes back up when power resume. Is this something you can address in a future version of the device? When power resume, the light should restart if it was on before. In a studio, we can't always reach for the on/off switch easily to turn it back on. In my case, this is a non-starter, I can't even consider your product because of this, despite all the other characteristics being pretty nice.

Really great video. Love all the details many reviewers miss like no umbrella mount on colbor and the need for 2 batteries on the amaran npf adapter. One cool thing I did find for the Colbor is they sell an umbrella mount accessory. Wish it were just on the light stand mount but at least they have an option you can buy if needed.

Thanks for that vid. I do have Colbor (RGB version) and I am quite happy with it. On your test it seemed to keep quite true to temperature setting all the way along but at 6500 it showed 6700+ to reach 6800 at 100%... that was surprising to see actually.

What a great video review, very informative, clear and direct to the point, one of the best reviews I've seen for these lights. May ask if maybe you can possibly check the Yongnuo YNLUX100 LED light, don't know if have heard or familiar with it, but I guess it is at the same price range, similar rated power, and around similar light output as the Amaran 60 and Colbor CL60, another alternative budget option for the Amaran and I guess possible competitive affordable option for the Colbor CL60. I haven't really seen any good in depth reviews of the light especially how it performs compared to other popular or well known portable LED studio lights in the market. Hoped someone could look further into it if ever. Either way, keep up the great work, and videos, good day and God bless

Agree, whatever brand eco system you are into then there is merit in staying within that brand. Maybe it's my phone but IMO the Amaran started less bright than Colbor at lower decals of percentage power, but looked a tad brighter at 90 and 100% power - consistent with Amaran drawing a slightly higher wattage on max. As someone who just bought a 200X S head, when it comes to adding additional heads, I'd look at the Amaran ahead of the Colbor. That said pros/ cons and both look good choices.

Excellent comparison. I have backed away from the Amaran due to the need to install the app to update the firmware and the data collection it does with the server, in addition to the noise of the fan when it heats up to the limit. But there is one thing that you have not mentioned about the Colbor, and that is that its power button is not a normal switch, which forces you to turn it on if you have it on a power strip with other lights in the studio. I don't like the connector either; a small USBc without fixing for more than 60W...

@@yannickGaultier But the problem is when you switch off all the studio lights connected to the power strip; when you switch on again the Colbor starts in off mode (No remote control).. The problem with the app Amaran is, apart from the private data sending, is that your phone has to be ON LINE all the time!

Either one should work for your application. I would say CL60 just because its a metal build and not plastic.

Good day can I ask, how is it using the Colbor CL60 until today? I've found out that the LED COB chip is unprotected/uncovered, so the LED can be easily damaged or if an insect lands and burns up on the LED COB chip it could damage it, did it cause any issues down the line? Can you explain unprotected? Like does it come with a cover or … They both come with a cover for the cob chip. Make sure you remove it before use. Both will be hot

@@theCameraVille Not the plastic cover that is placed when you first open the light out of the box. I mean the actual LED COB chip itself is bare - touching it means touching the actual COB chip surface itself from my understanding can be fragile, it has no glass covering as opposed to other lights like the Amaran 60D that does have it. Making it prone to damages easily if it is hit or debris gets on the surface. Any thoughts on it, as I've heard leaving a LED COB chip bare with no glass covering protecting is risky damaging it.

Couldnt fix it. I slapped it a bit after and it worked but later came back. I later just gave it away to my viewer and call it a day. That was also a brand new unit and first day of using it which is very bad QC from Amaran.

Thank you very much for this excellent review. Two factors are decisive for me to choose Colbor - it does not track user data; and the duration of continuous use. Man, what was that noise from Amaran at 105 minutes? It looks like a failed toy. Bizarre...

Yea, I did a live stream and suddenly it started make noise. People were shocked that the fan failed. It was also a brand new unit, which is concerning. I was also weird out about the data tracking. I left a link to their website on it but it doesn't makes any sense for just controlling light. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciated!

My struggle is that I really want to stick with the sidius app. It might be an extra 25% cost per light, but having 1 app for every light feels worth it, and Aputure is trustworthy enough of a brand even though it seems like Amaran does have some issues.

Yup, I still use amaran / aputure for now. If I keep seeing more fan issue in long term usage, I may switch as this seems to be a constant issue that hasnt been fixed still. I remember how outrage folks were on the live show when it sudddenly started to malfunction.

No one makes the perfect light ecosystem. Amaran is the way to go for the app convenience, but Colbor and Zhiyun have better design, meaning you can use the lights themselves in your shots to add visual interest, while the amaran are plasticy and ugly. The larger ones especially. They look just awful.
