This goes out to my fellow ex DAWGS - Delta Company 1/48 INF - Turn the sound down...lotta wind and a bad mic....oh and ignore me giving the wife instructions... ;-)
The last time I was at Coleman was April of 1966. I was attached to B Company 122 Maintenance Battalion doing radio and teletype repair from 1963 to 1966. The base looks much better than when I was there, lots more landscaping! I spent a little over two years at Coleman, I enjoyed my tour of duty.
I was stationed there in 89-90, B co 4/18, before they closed the post. We returned from Desert Storm without our vehicles, and I heard they rolled up the colors shortly after I had PCS'd. Had a great experience being here in this place... Lots of history.
Thank You ! Brings back some pretty awesome memories... HHC 1/48 71-72...Worked in S-4. Drove the M-577 4M stenciled SHENANDOAH on the side. The Brgade Commander wanted all Union victory names on all the APC's....And the Ice cream parlor in town had the hot sisters that Dad watched really close !! Thanks again ! Blood & Guts !
I miss the blood and guts dining hall. I was stationed there 1984 thru 1987 It was the best time of my life, I used to go the K.F.C and the Henchen House right outside post. We had a nice nco club with slot machines . Awesome parade fields very nice place to live. MY unit was Service Company Second Batt. 3rd A.D. Spearhead baby. thanks for the upload
My Dad was stationed with the 2nd of the 6th artillery from 1965 - 1969, before he was sent to Vietnam. We lived in the dependents quarters, and then had to move off base, to Lieblos while he was gone. While he was there, we used to spend a lot of time on the base at Coleman Kaserne, and occasionally made friends with some of the soldiers. We liked the movies, the gym, the snack bar, the bowling alley, the P.X., the Boy Scouts (and would camp up above the base some times) and occasionally the mess hall. My mother stayed in Lieblos after 1974, so I was able to see the base before and after it was renovated. I was in the Army from 1974 to 1976, but I didn't get a chance to visit there during that time.
I was stationed there in 87 in Alpha Company 45th support battalion and I really enjoyed this video. I was 19 years old when I arrived there. Great memories.
Teresa Ramos I forgot what company but I was In I think b 45th support. The barrack I stayed I. Was the new structure at top of hill. I worked in supply I was suppose to work in motor pool but I didnt
Hey. I was in Alpha 1/48. I came in the same day as Brown and Karen Willacy in the 45th in June 88. The major at division comes in the room and says " Washington, Willacy and Brown, you're going to Gelnhausen. Everybody else, congratulations you are going to the Rock!
I was in HHC / PAC S-1 then assigned as the Company Clerk in DCo 1/48th Inf. Ron my friend hung himself in the supply room. We were just young soldiers back then. 1984-1986. Captain Detrani and LT Nagel. I was SPC Lofton. 71L & 11B all the way! Thanks for the video. I finaly retired after 28 years of service. US Army.
Thank you for putting this up, brings back a lot of memories both good and bad. I served from 1979 to 1984, 1980 to 1984 as a Dragoon, Charlie Co 1/48th Infantry. Blood and Guts Brothers.
brings back a lot of memories. 1972-1978 Budingen 3/12 cav. lots of trips from the train station going up to fulda and across the boarder until i got my 1970 Mach-1 , hell on wheels from then on!!!
Loved the memories, I was with the C company 2/48 inf. from '66-68' [just missed Viet Nam] attended the NCO academy while assigned. Made E-5. I miss the guys and the country.
Nice video. I was there 84-86 B/Co. 3/33. 2nd to the last building going up the hill on left. Mechanic, my M88 was a blast to drive. Some good times there. Beautiful country.
What you call Delta Co. was, at least from 1977-79, known as Combat Support Company (CSC), Among other things, the Battalion's Scout Platoon was attached there. And there I was, for just shy of three years...and I had already completed a 4-year hitch in the Navy. (There was a woman involved...let it go). So, if anybody remembers a guy known as "Squid" from those long ago days, I'm still alive and well...well, kinda...Anyway, to all those out there with a 19D10 MOS, "Scouts Out!" (And Skin's In!)
Thanks for the memories. I was stationed there from 76-78 at the first barracks going up the hill. I was in 122 maintenance Bn and in the small arms shop and fixed tank turrets .
I was in Delta co 1/48th Inf Aug 1958-Feb 1960,the same time Elvis was in Friedburg. Also was in Fort Hood with him where he signed autographs and took photos. Elvis was a genuine nice person. Returned to visit Gelnhausen in the 1970 with my brother Arnold who had been stationed in Kirsh-Goens with the 3AD. What surprised me most of all is how clean the Coleman Barracks and the town on Gelnhausen remained.
Let's see if I can remember it correctly... What makes the grass green? Blood! What makes the flowers bloom? Guts! What do we want all day? Blood & Guts, Blood & Guts, Blood & Guts!!! DRAGOONS!
As someone being born and growing up in Gelnhausen its fascinating to see this video and all of the comments below. How many people from the other side of the world have been the same place i have been! I also played a lot of Basketball in the old gym. These buildings have seen a lot of things and people
Fascinating to see footage of slow drive around Coleman Kaserne (from 2009)I served in HHC 2nd Bde. and C 1/33 Armor from Feb.'80-Jan.'82 when I PCS'd to Ft.Riley,Kansas.Regret not staying here to ETS which I did to return to Ireland to join police and from which I am about to retire after 32 years service(My MOS was 19E)
WOW so much has changed. I was very much a different person then.. 1/48th Infantry -Blood and Guts "HIGH ANGLE HELL" 4.2 Mortar platoon HHC Dec 1987- Dec 1989. I remember 1st Sgt King G. Murray giving us our morning and COB briefings. Shout out to: S.Sgt Stafford, S.Sgt Kearns, S.Sgt Larosse, Sgt Blankenship, Sgt Link, Spc Davis, Ralph C. , Spc Culver, Spc Venus, Spc Nichols ( Nicklehead) , Spc Crossley, and so many others I had the opportunity to serve with ( please forgive me for not remembering all of your names, but I remember your faces) . I was known as SPC Beal "THE FLAAAME" Shout out to Spc Durham on that one. LOL. In Dec of 1989, I was PCS'd to Fort Carson, CO, where things took a bad turn for personally. I hold that one of the best times in my life was spent here, if I could have known then what I know now, maybe things would have turned out differently for me, but I am glad my life has brought me to where I am now. Allot of the names I have mentioned are probably long gone ( RIP) from old age, or other.... I will NEVER forget all of you..."I left the Army, but the Army didn't leave me" my own personal quote. A message to speerhead67... Thank you so much for capturing this video and posting it. So many memories... DRAGOONS! "PRESENT ARMS!" Salute.
My father was stationed here in 1971-1976. We lived off base for the first year then in the apartments. I remember with so much fondness our time there. Daddy made a tank for a retiring Colonel I believe. I remember the PX, the base uphill and bingo at the NCO club where momma worked for a time. I loved our time spent in Germany and miss it. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
That brings back some memories. Bravo company 1/48th "blood n guts" battalion, sergeant, weapons platoon, motorized 81mm mortars. 71-73. We did all the major training areas, a few real cold winters. As a draftee, it was nice for me instead of an assignment in Nam. Thanks for sharing.
I was in A Company 1/48th B & G also from 71-72. I drove a M113 APC while stationed in Gelnhausen. I remember those cold winters especially one at Wildflecken where our tracks literally froze right in the track park. Also those and hot & dusty training areas of Grafenwohr, & Hoenfels. I also got lucky also and got Germany as an assignment and not Vietnam.
I served with 3/61 ADA in Buedingen, but lived down the road from Coleman Barracks, and worked a lot with 2nd Brigade between 82-85. We went back to Germany over New Year's this past year, and spent New Year's Eve in Gelnhausen. Glad to see your video- when I went to the Kaserne, it was cloudy and foggy, but we could still see the old post- unlike Budingen, which has been fenced off and is still mostly desolate (the Cav track park is in use, though, by a construction company). Kind of sad to see Coleman civilian-ized, though. Didn't see a single reference to the Army ever being there. Where the chapel once stood is now a dance studio... no respect.
Büdingen has completely changed. Is open again but they put up houses and tore down a lot of buildings...or remodeled them. Airfield is gone...water buffalows own it :P
HHC 1st Battalion 48th Infantry - 2/71 to 2/72. Drafted and sent to Germany. Trained M113 driver assigned to be Battalion Supply Clerk. Looks a lot different than when I was there, but still brought back a lot of memories. Thanks!!
Sept 1963-Sept 1966 Army Brat. 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Father was Chaplain(Major) Donald M Covington Boy Scouts, little league baseball, youth soccer. glad we were there.
I was there 1966 to 1967 ! 2nd Battalion 6th Artillary ! Great experience and many friends , I will never forget ! This video brought back many memories !
Fantastic! Dad was 1/48 in '71-72. I went back 20years later in '92, but the gates were closed protecting refugees in your barracks. Thanks for the tour and letting us know it's now open to all of us! I am definitel going back!! BnG to all of you!!!!
Coleman Kaserne received its name in 1950. It was named for Lt Kenneth W. Coleman, a Black soldier who was assigned to the 761st Tank Battalion, and who was killed in combat in the autumn of 1944 in NW Europe. He received the Silver Star.
Wow! How cool! Was there 85-88 2nd Support Battalion 52D (still in power generation to this day, instructor for Generac and EGSA). The pond, running through the "cabbage patch" and all, great memories! Played in the band MoxNix and man, the NCO club would be Rockin'! Bwa Ha Ha Ha
Hello Spearhead67, Your memories brought back some very special memories. I lived in Waechtersbach as a kid and my uncle was the caretaker of our soccer team/field. Thank you for your close-up view of the old kaserne!
Thanks for the memories 1974 to 76 The formations were on the Top of the Hill in front of the barracks. That was a Mile Walk. However, I had a profile I could only walk 9 tenths of a mile. I live off post and drove up the Hill. CSC/HQ/PIO office 2D BN 48 3rd Armored Division Spearhead...1974 to 76... I had forgotten what it looked like almost. When I (ETS) I never had the chance to say goodbye to friends. Sergeant Johnson, Sargent London, Red, Allen, and Bianchi. Allen you were there for 6 years...Then you married a German girl and re-up for another 6 years. Unfortunately right after you got married she got on the plane and came to America. I'm sorry man. Spec 4 (E4) Chambers. Anyone recognize me?
was there 75-76 bravo 1/33 sfc. harrison was platoon sgt. and my tank cammander. when we had time off yea back gate and no time your at the bar drinking , wild and great memories. will never forget that place and the men i served with. DW. TREAD HEAD FOREVER!
I haven't seen this place since 1990...............I was in the 1/48 cav. 3rd armor div. 11c /mos !! They have changed alot and boy was it a trip living there !!! Thanks for the images !!!
11c forever; I was on Sullivan in the 1990's with 3/77AR first 8ID(m) then 1st AD. Loved my time there, one of my boys from basic was stationed on Coleman with 4/8inf
@@NAMOR2033 I used to go to the Blue Knight bar nearby and it was crazy, called it the blue fight afterwards...........started going to Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen......the bar district and partied like a rock star........LOL.....
I’m sure at some point we crossed paths, I hit up sachsenhausen in Frankfurt on more than a few occasions. Definitely had more fun than any one person should. 😂 lol
Bob Smith Delta Co. 48th Infantry - 7 - 61 to 3 -64. Also went to the 7th Army NCO Academy in BadToltz (SP) - 3 winters in Graf. Anyone out there during my time frame? Anyone still alive? :) For years have tried to find the best CO I ever had. Capt. Benjamin Swenson (big ben) Anyone have any ideas?
Was there fromm 88-91 when it went from 1/48th to 4-18th. HHC Maintenance platoon. i remember those companies runs up the hill. we use to the mountain bike up the back side up the log road to the top to the back side that brought you down to down town Gelnhausen. miss the place. will go back one day. thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the video. My Dad was bases there until his death in a car accident in 72. my mother was also there and was pregnant with me. It was cool to see where they lived and where I almost lived. My Dad was First Cav.
Viví como hospite en la casa de una chika llamada Patricia su esposo Stefan y tenía una sobrina llamada Regina ..luego viaje a Italia me llamo Alfredo esto es en Frankfurt verdad,??? Espero encontrarte un día regina
I was in 1/48th Bravo company ( then 4/18th) or the other way around cant remember. but i did love having the chow in our building...i was there a few years ago and it change so much i barely remember everything. thanks for sharing. oh, i was there from 1987 to 1990
Guessing you knew SSG Paz who was in Delta first before going to Bravo? Only hung out with a few guys from Bravo like Lamb (we had a Lamb as well in Delta), Moya and Murrah
Was sent from D Co 5/8 INF 8th ID in Mainz (Lee Barracks) to B Co 4/18INF at Coleman Kaserne for operations Desert Shield/Storm. I remember you Jorge Deleon. Several of us were sent from 8th ID and made many good memories at Coleman Kaserne. 1990-1991
I was stationed there from Oct 86 until it closed. Got a European out and stayed for an additional 10 months until 11 December of 1991 when I came back home. I was in Bravo 3/33 Armor. When you saluted an officer, you said "Pickles sir!" That was so funny. They retired the colors and renamed us 4th, Bn, 8th Cav..."Mustangs sir!" was much easier when saluting. They changed just before we went to the CAT (Canadian Army Trophy) competition for tank companies. We won it for the first time.
Yea I loved that place, anyone remember the Madhouse?? Rock and ROLL !! all us wrenches lived on the 5th floor in the big room next to the latrine while I was there. myself(Mike Love) Carl Becker,Troy Host, Allen Geddes,John Aikens,Hugh Lucas, Mitch(Icant remember his last name). on that floor I remember Donald "Too Tall" Scott,Rex "Smoke" Turner, Leo Kudlo(RIP),and many others, great times partying and playing Foosball at the CQ runners desk
I would presume the sculptured frieze above the front door of the Kaserne building @ (9 mins -30 Seconds ) in is that of 'Barbarossa' and his merry band....
WOW! Thanks so very much for the tour! As a 19 year old, I arrived in Coleman in June of 1956. Gelnhausenwas a bit more than a village and a great place for fun, beer and nice young women. I was in . Sweeney's B Co. and ultimately became the Commo Chief. At 76, I cannot imagine trekking up that hill to the barracks, while in an !!alcohol stupor! As an oldtimer of the 33d Tk Bn, I have had my nostalgia satisfied for the moment. Again- Thanks, It is well done and your wife is a great pilot!
1986-1988 HHC 1/48 Medic Platoon then in 1988 or 1989 HHC 4/18 INF Medic Platoon after the transition. We didn't have digital cameras back then, so thanks for recording this! Lots of memories in the 2.5 years I spent there! I was a medic for Mortar Platoon, Scout Platoon, Alpha & Delta CO and could smoke all the grunts on the 2-mile run!
Thanks for the good memories, my dad was stationed there in the early 70's, and it brought back good memories. I remember the pond, it was the first time I fell in love with anything having to do with water....how beautiful it was.
Stationed there 1975 - 1977 The pond referred to in this video is the location where two young newly promoted men to Sgt drowned. They were thrown into the pond even though one could be heard yelling "I CAN'T SWIM" Occurred about 100 ft from the Military Police Station. A damn shame a real damn shame!!
Nice video brings back a lot of memories I was in Charlie Co back in 1977 to 1978 hell of post.I miss the buddy's I had I had a very crazy time there, thanks for the video thanks
Amazing how things change, I was assigned to CSC 1/48th Inf in 1976, was assigned to the RedEye section. Remember sharing the barracks with Scouts, Commo, Supply, and radar guys. Made some great friends,
I was stationed in Fulda, just down the road a bit from you guys. I was in the 11th ACR, Blackhorse! 1981-1983. Best time of our lives and we didn't even know it.
Hunkered down on the right side 1st building on the right 2/6 Arty. 503rd and 2/6 was on the left 1st building while entering the back gate... Directly on top of the hill looking south from our view point. Tank park and baseball park..Very near the Church and the Theater and gym.
Wow the Memories was a Unit Police there back in 82 . Lived in the co-ed quarters with the MP's great job 4 days on 4 days off. We were the one directing traffic in and off post wearing the helmets with UP on it and bringing and folding the flag for Reveille and Retreat. AN HONOR.
I was in the 29th Scout platoon in the late 50s they changed to the 48th in 57? I think our job was to road guide the Reg. or any other troops to the training areas mainly Wildflecken ( my favorite ) or Grafenfier? -- forgot how to spell those.--- and then be the enemy for the exercise . And what you are showing on the tape is all strange , except for the buildings we lived in . In the winter we got our kicks watching civilian cars trying to make the hill of the circle I think most of the expanse of grass at the bottom was where we parked the tank , jeeps and other vehicles . Ah the memories , thanks for posting .
I was there in 67, 68 and 69 as a Army Brat!!! Good memories, mostly Thanks Right across from main gate was a motor pool and next to the motor pool was a concrete drainage ditch, a solider didn't want to pay a taxi fee after a night on the town, so he ran from taxi down that drainage ditch and fell in, knocked himself out, his shoulders were just as wide as the drainage ditch and he drowned in one inch water. My friend and I found him! Ran to main gate and UP's took care of it...
Thanks for video Speerhead67. I was stationed with the 709th MPs in 1976-77. Our barracks were to the right of the back gate. The alert siren was on top of our barracks. We were on the fourth floor. 503rd MPs were on the second floor. Great memories. Very much appreciated.
@@Gibby483 sorry I don't remember him, the one Sgt. that I remember the most was a Hawaiian name legazond, a tough son-of-a-bitch, I respected that man. he once. ran us out of our room to talk to two fuck ups.we started hearing loud cussing and things being knock over. I thought we should go in and help him but suddenly the two punks ran out screaming for help, the sarg. had beaten the snot out of both of them. very few names I can remember.i just remember how beautiful it was there and how the people didn't really care for American soldiers.i was also a 5-ton ammo truck driver there. went up the hill to the ammo dump just about every day.
@@mitchellmoon6083 Mitch, I think your talking about SSGT Langdon (sp) from gun 15 when I was there. We called him Papa san. He was something else, We had a hippy that they stuck on my gun and he refused an order from me to off load the ammo and I may have slapped him around a little and to make a long story short he reported me and another of our crew to Top and I had told Papa San what we did and when we were called to the orderly room he went with us and told Top he seen the hold thing and we were just trying to help him up but he kept falling. Been up to that ammo dump more than once myself.
@@Gibby483I know I misspelled his name, this happens back at the barracks in nov of 72, our room was first on the left just as you came up the steps..names never stuck with me and I kept mostly to my self. there were so damn many drugs being used there, got t boned by an APC one on a convoy to( wilflicken ) the driver was drunk.the running board broke the bleed valve to the air tank for our breaks and had to drive all the way back to Coleman with a piece of wood hammered into if for a plug.
Things really are different from 1968/1970 when I was there in A battery 2nd battalion 6th Field Artillery. Pond is over grown, barracks look the same. Love to go back sometime. Anybody remember Staff Sgt. Hall or 1st Sgt Owens?
While I was in headquarters company and the mortar Platoon I do remember dreading walking up the hill to the chow hall when the back gate chaw Hall was closedlol I was there from 84 to 85
