One of the big complaints about the NBA is that stars only flock to big cities to play with each other. Colin Cowherd proposes a way to fix that - and Kristine Leahy gives her take on it.

Listen to DeRozan and Lowry declarations. They both knows Toronto doesn't give a shit about Raptors until playoffs. Hockey is the number 1 sport in Canada, not basketball. I would still put them on the list but this is not a shame either.

San Antonio, Cleveland, Orlando, Oklahoma City, Detroit, New Jersey, Indiana, and Utah have all played in NBA Finals in the past 20 years. According to Colin's NBA, none of those teams would be in the NBA. Maybe there are too many teams in the league, but 14? That's way too low. Plenty of room in the NBA for mid-market teams. Will they ever win as consistently as the Lakers? Probably not, but look how much that title meant to Cleveland this year or how much making the finals meant to Orlando. Those seasons also make sports great.

If you limit the NBA too the major cities, the average level of talent goes way up, and teams are a lot better on average. More people in larger markets, and when teams are good, fans support more. You'd more than make up for the loss revenue from small markets being cut out.

No, because if today there were 14 teams and the big money contracts, the shitty players would never get a chance today. In the NBA today, there are a lot of shit players that PLAY and EARN a lot of money, but suck and as a result, the better players are getting away from them and those franchises.

@Bob Brock Hasn't been a problem for the Blue Jays or the Raptors. Toronto is on par with Chicago and Boston for size. If you're the kind of person who likes big cities, it'll more than fit the bill. And being in Toronto will feel very much the same as any American city of similar size.

Just another video where Colin essentially mocks middle America. He loves to make fun of, "small town football guy" and "hillbilly college fan." In Colin's world only big cities and elitists should be able to enjoy live sports, the rest of the country can watch, "their local high school team," because they don't have a Fortune 500 company near by. Ridiculous. I agree the sports market is over saturated, however, Colin's prescription for that is ridiculous. A 14 team league would get old fast.

Jovin it's their life. It's a long season and they know they'll make the playoffs. We've entered the grind of the season where games are all about staying healthy. Instead of dwelling on the fact that players are doing what they can to stay healthy, why not watch some of the talent that doesn't get talked about. Some players will barely be able to walk when they're 60 because of their knees, they can take a few days off.

Altairograph they need rest. They all have the same workout schedule, they workout as a team, so they get tired, as a team. Sure they're younger, but they'll still get gassed during the season. Be upset all you want that grown men decided that they wanted a day off, and I'm pretty sure they've earned it.

I agree. Think 20 teams should be sufficient for the NBA. Hate to see stars stranded on these teams that you just know can't compete for playoff spots. Utah management keeps the Jazz competitive, the location keeps Superstars away. I do feel the NCAA should go away from zone style defenses..doesnt really prepare them for the NBA to me.

First things first, Orlando has had 4 franchise players NOT 2. 1. Shaq 2.Penny Hardaway 3. Tracey McGrady 4. Dwight Howard Second thing, 1,000 people move to Florida a day since 2005 The Orange County "Orlando Area" has grown from 801,000 in 1996 to 1,146,000 in 2016. Throw in Disney/Universal Studios to make us the #1family destination, top 3 in tourist via North America & 2nd in Conventions behind Las Vegas. Orlando Magic was most necessary 😌

the point is that its not a good look for league to have players sitting out, he's not wrong on the point that you could teams from each league and the product would be better. you look at hockey, a more physically demanding sport, same amount of games as basketball, and i dont see any of them take games off for rest, you might see it very rarely.

Colton Park Philly Orlando Brooklyn Milwaukee (Giannis is good but no star) Lakers Denver Atlanta (Paul and Dwight are good but not stars) Charlotte Utah Boston (Thomas is good but no star) Miami (Whiteside is their best player, not a star) Detroit Phoenix That's 13 and there's a bunch of teams with young good players that aren't superstars either that I didn't mention. Realistically only Golden State Cleveland Houston OKC Clippers T-Wolves Pelicans Blazers (depending on how you feel about Lillard) Sacramento Indiana New York Have superstars Teams like Chicago and Toronto Have some very very good players like Butler, Lowry and Derozan but they aren't really superstars and probably won't make it there.

Less teams,less games,less resting,less complaining you say I say less players, even with less teams they still played 82 games back in the 70s so same amount of resting, and the biggest factor LESS MONEY.
@harrygarris6921
@harrygarris6921 7 лет назад
A lot of times when players rest its because they're sore/hurt like Lebron with his tweaked back or Kyrie with his sore ankle. They could still play through it but their teams gonna make the playoffs anyway so they don't have to. I don't think less games would help because these guys play basketball every day anyway so they're still going to get these minor injuries.

If anything I would be happier knowing that my home town team has a better chance of winning
@JBBGeek
@JBBGeek 7 лет назад
The problem here is that a lot of good players lose their jobs if you reduce it to 14. A lot of good role players would have to find jobs elsewhere. I like the current NBA- everyone has a chance to win. There are plenty of times that people have succeeded in small markets and brought those teams success. At this point, the NBA would destroy its reputation if it cut just over half of the league. Every team has a rich history. Every team has a story. Every team has had a chance to win. Now, some places don't know HOW to win, but if you deflate the league, it's less fun. Here's what you do, Mr. Cowherd: take the 16 best teams and do the playoff bracket that way. Don't destroy the conferences, but take the 16 best teams and make the playoffs happen from that. And...also make the All-Star Game mean something. Have home-court advantage be decided at the All-Star Game like the MLB used to do. Then, it's more competitive. I, for one, like the new CBA. That means that there's less of a chance of stars going to bigger cities and forming superteams and making the league less competitive. What's the Finals matchup going to be? Probably Cleveland VS. Golden State, unless San Antonio makes a meaningful playoff run like in 2014. Either way, those are all superteams, with San Antonio being less talked about than the other two. Just make the league spread farther, and make it more competitive. Make the draft mean something. In some cases, great players leave after 5 or so years and wind up on contenders because their team didn't want to commit. In the 1950s and '60s, contenders were built on the draft, and big trades were a rarity. Now, big trades are a dime a dozen, and the draft doesn't mean diddly-squat.

I love this take. An ideal NBA, an urban league dependent on urban culture and player pool, needs to be in big multi-team, multi-event markets. Minneapolis, not Milwaukee; Philly, not D.C. (I kinda disagree); L.A., not Portland; Dallas, not San Antonio.

I agree and disagree - 14 is too few teams, but there needs to be a cap on the numbers of teams in any league which means more dilluted play and terrible teams for mediocre franchises. That's what some of the leagues are trying do. Put NFL/NBA/MLB to places where players do not want to play or places where the citizens are not asking for a team. I never understood moving a team to place with non-supportive fan-base. With the same team being able to keep its superstars and key players with low attendance.

This doesn't make sense. There will always be a worse destination. If you go to those 14 cities as the only franchises, then Dallas or Cleveland becomes what is current day Orlando or Utah. There's always going to be worse/better situations regardless of how many teams there are.

This is true but the thing is us NBA fans could care less how much the owners make, we want to see some good basketball games. you think it's fair that a person should drive 4 hours to go watch a basketball game with LeBron on the roster because his or her city doesn't have a basketball team and LeBron doesn't even play? these athletes get payed way too much money to take "days off" smh.
@harrygarris6921
@harrygarris6921 7 лет назад
Yeah but that's flawed logic because you're saying the more money someone makes the harder they should have to work. Players aren't paid because of their work ethic they're paid because of their talent. And players making less money shouldn't have an excuse to not try as hard because they're paid less.

You can thank David Stern for the movement of teams to "small markets." He was the one who saw how popular the Portland Trail Blazers were in the 70s and thought, as the lead legal counsel for the league at the time, "we need more of this." So when they merged with the ABA, he was the one who pushed for the inclusion of San Antonio and Louisville (which they got San Antonio), he pushed for the Jazz to move to Salt Lake City, he pushed for the Kings to relocate to Sacramento, he pushed for Charlotte and Orlando to be included in the 87/88 four team expansion (Charlotte didn't have the Panthers yet), he was the one who pushed for the Grizzlies to move to Memphis, and the one who pushed for the Sonics to move to Oklahoma City. He admitted that he hated competing against the NFL and MLB for fans and sponsorship dollars.

Vancouver's failure as a franchise wasn't due to economics, per say, but due to timing. The city just wasn't ready to commit and unfortunately, now it is. I'm sure LeBron, Kyrie and Love would much prefer to travel to Vancouver than Memphis.

The new cba doesn't force you to stay anywhere. Yeah they can give you more money but you don't have to take it and if you choose the money then it's your problem you're living somewhere you don't want to. As for the whole sitting out debate I think players need to remember that without the fans they wouldn't be getting paid millions to play basketball.

No pro basketball player wants to play in Minnesota or Denver. Atlanta and Miami's fan base support doesn't justify you having teams there. Just because Seattle has 1.2 million Indian software engineers doesn't justify them having a team.

Can't defend Utah, but every city Colin mentions has either a NFL or MLB team that is at the least equally revered, if not more than the NBA team that is there. The small market teams help sustain it precisely because they are the only pro game in town.

The problem is some people go on the road to see these players and spend hundreds-thousand dollars for hotels, food and tickets, and the player you want to see or the way to see the best game isn't happening because they didn't come. Sitting players at home games is better, but not on the road.

Detroit is the greatest sports city in the US. Downtown Detroit is beautiful and all the stadiums are 15 years old or less, one brand new. There is 4 million in Detroit and the suburbs and plenty of places for the players to live. The weather is nice for 3/4 of the year. Yes, I'm from Detroit but I've lived in Chicago, New York, and Florida and they aren't even close. You couldn't walk a block without seeing a Cabrera, Stafford, or other jersey topped off with the Old English D. We love our teams and our players love it here too!
