This song is absolutely terrific. love the simplicity about it and how true it is. "I watch the sun, as it comes up, i was it as it sets, yeah this is as good, as it gets". love all of colin hay's work. and also love all the songs that are used on scrubs.
Thank Zack Braff for introducing so so many people to Colin Haye's outstanding and underrated solo work. If you never knew his solo work and only knew Men At Work for their hits you would be amazed to hear just how good he is.
Congratulations on your new arrival and God bless her! Let's hope she goes through life well and will not say at 40 ...I am "Waiting for my Real Life to Begin" :) Best regards from Romania! ( this song is my ringtone from about 1 year).
My my my, it's a beautiful world I like swimming in the sea I like to go out beyond the white breakers Where a man can still be free, Or a woman if you are one I like swimming in the sea My my my, It's a beautiful world I like drinking Irish Tea With a little bit of lap sang souchong I like making my own Tea My my my, It's a beautiful world I like driving in my car Roll the top down, Sometimes I travel quite far Drive to the ocean Stare up at the stars All around is anger, automatic guns Death in large numbers, no respect for woman, or our little ones I tried talking to Jesus, but he just put me on hold Said he'd been swamped by calls this week And He could not shake his cold And still this emptiness persists Perhaps this is as good as it gets When you've given up the drink and those nasty cigarettes Now I leave the party early at least with no regrets I watch the sun as it comes up I watch it as it sets Yeah this is as good as it gets My my my, It's a beautiful world I like sleeping with Marie She is one sexy girl full of mystery She says she doesn't love me, but she likes my company For now that's good enough for me
Colin Hay certainly does not get the credit he deserves. Sadly pop culture has little room for true artists in their own time usually. Give it a generation or two and he will be as beloved as he deserves
He is pretty right on a lot of things in this song. The world is beautiful. For me, being a Christian helps me to see that even more. We're perfectly entitled to find happiness, using any means which are morally right. So for those of you who aren't Christians I don't hate you, or want to argue like a lot of others seem to on here, I want to say that I'm happy you've also found a way to also see the beauty of this world.
Enjoy the little things. There is so much beauty all around when you walk through the world with your eyes wide open. So many possibilities and adventures lying in front of you. And it depends on YOU: You can walk your old paths and enjoy the familiarity or take a leap into the blue to exlore what might happen...
Fckn gddmnt this song. Wrecked me at the worst part of my life 9 years ago...’Still this emptiness persists, perhaps this is as good as it gets’ wrecked me. Put me on the floor weeping. I still have not found my Marie. But i still have crush on Sonny Day. And here i am again.
87 Chrysler, a high way cruiser. Cloucester beach w my dog Jupiter. I regret many things i did not do. History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. 2017...Perhaps this is as good as it gets? Am i still on hold? Because here i am again. Didnt Scrubs series have 2 finale episodes? Wtf happened? Great show....The episodes when dr coxs wife dropped bombs on EVERYONE and when JD dropped the ‘I'm alone..stop complaining about your relationships?’ rant were powerful. I was alone and two friends lacked self awareness. I will never forget Juan Itor and Sonny Day.
This Man, and Band, Influenced me more than the average bear... I Love them! I love everything Colin puts out... If I had That Talent, I would still not put out anything close this.... AWESOME! Thank you, sir.
Colin Hay was born in Scotland, moved to Australia, was a worldwide sensation with Men At Work and their hits, and is awesome as a solo artist. A great story teller, funny, nice and worth exploring. Waiting For My New Life TO Begin and I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You are a good start. There is a fantastic enjoyable documentary about his life and songs too!
What is the name of the documentary? I love the song about his gf at 9, Maggie and the song about his father is so beautiful and resonates deeply, as all his songs do.
A friend me introduced me to his solo and this was the 1st song. I like it but when he said " Or a woman if you are one" I got so tickled, laughed and laughed! Such great lyrics. i shall never forget the guy that told me to play this!
I can't believe this song isn't more popular, or Colin Hay in general, for that matter. His songs are so deep and comforting, a far cry from many of the popular songs today.
Jimbo Henderson I'm so glad. Brodsky is a brilliant poet and musician. Look for his songs about real people, such as "The Hands of Victor Jara" and his baseball songs about Moe Berg, Eddie Klep, & Richie Allen ["Letters in the Dirt"]. Very touching songs ["Until You Can Forgive," Unbridled Reins"] and funny ones ["Blow 'em Away," "Talk to My Lawyer"], much more.
I disagree with some images chosen to this video. Like the cars for example. The calmness and inspiration what he sings 'I like driving in my car', we can imagine some good points of driving, and not pollutions and traffics like shown which are the sad part of the concept of the word 'car'. But anyways I think this is the most inspired song of Colin Hay. Sometimes it helps me to avoid suicidal thoughts in my most depressed moments. Thanks for putting this song in this world, Colin! Ace
@@eking7690 Yeah, I love this bridge because it's like he's having a conversation with himself and coming to the realisation that yeah, this world IS beautiful and if this is as good as it gets that's still pretty awesome. 😊
I kind of relate to this song. I have an amazing life, I really do - I appreciate it, and most of the time, I am very happy. This song, in my perspective, is about realizing you have a really good life, and coming to terms with it. You have good times and bad times, but overall your life is good. It's strange though, realizing that you have all you need and a lot of what you want, and that life may not get better. It's good and strange, all at once.

@whizonit It's just like what Colin Hay said, "All around is anger, automatic guns. Death in large numbers. No respect for women or our little ones." I love this song but it doesn't exactly make me think, 'Ah! What a beautiful world/life!' That doesn't take away from the song at all though. If anything it adds to it because it isn't being completely oblivious and idealistic.
Everybody here know that the singer is from Men at Work - Land Down Under, Be Good Johnny, Overkill, It's A Mistake...? I'm sure many do, but in case some of you don't...
@Legacymaster I still have to disagree. To me, the little bits of happiness that he sings about in the song are tinged with despair and even melancholy. Even when he sings about enjoying swimming in the sea - what is that but a (vain) attempt at escape from the world and its troubles? In my opinion, there isn't much happy sentiment running through this song and nothing really to smile about but the song overall makes me smile because I enjoy it so much.
I was falling asleep while playing another song where I didn't notice it was on a playlist, when I suddenly wake up with this song on... It's an amazing feeling to wake up to such a beautiful song :)
Think I've just lost my girlfriend, I now know what Colin means when he says 'Leave the party early, at least with no regrets'. I'm such a fucking moron.
I've just been shown this song, it has some of the most inspiring and beautiful lyrics i've heard in a song before. And the rythm behind it just works so incredibly well...Truly amazing song
I first heard this song in 2018 on a regional radio station in Mareeba in Far North Queensland in 2018. It has become one of all time favourite songs. Bravo to Colin Hay, one of Australia’s great musical talents.
+VinnyDaQ : Vinny: I've been listening to Dylan for exactly 50 years....... and Colin Hay is one of my favorite singer-songwriters........ but I don't see any significant similarities.
@@gururajchadaga Glad you liked them .... May I indulge your time and give two more recommendations? Death Row Conversation - Colin Hay Bring yourself home to me - Jimmy Little You won't be disappointed
