I had a friend in college claim that rock guitarists aren't as skilled as classical guitarists. I played the introduction to La Villa Strangiato. He immediately withdrew his claim.

It's good to see that this generation appreciates these musicians.

Imagine hearing this when it came out. We used to skip school every time Rush released an album. We would go to the diner for breakfast, head to the record shop and buy the album, get stoned and listen to it in someone’s living room while their parents were out at work. Our minds were blown. Because then, nobody knew Rush. They were what we thought was our own private band. I saw hemispheres live in 1979 at the Palladium in NYC with 2,000 people and year after year the crowds got larger and larger and suddenly they were everyone’s band. Rush fans are a rare breed. I’m so happy to see you guys loving this. Welcome.

Though Peart does his usual great job on the drums,this all about Alex Lifeson axe work,so underrated on the guitar,sheer genius 🤘🏻

I'm turning 50 next week and all the music you guys are listening to I grew up with. I'm glad to see the younger generation respecting this music. They don't do it like this anymore.

I feel any Rush song should be listened to 3 times. Once concentrate on guitar then bass and finally drums. There is so much going on that it's impossible to catch it all. You're listening to a mind melting Lifeson solo meanwhile Ged's just casually laying down one of the greatest bass lines ever and Neil's doing unreal things on the drums.

I’ve seen Rush over 27 times. The last was at Madison Sq Garden on their final tour...It was the best playing from them I’ve ever heard. I literally wept just from Geddy’s tone lol So glad they went out on a high note 🏆

I once saw Alex and Geddy being interviewed by Steven Colbert. He asked them, "Have you ever written a song so long that you influenced yourself?". they laughed, and told the story of trying to do this song in a single take in the studio, and they kept messing it up. Not long after I saw that, I saw them in concert. This song live is like an out of body experience.

As a guitarist, I was always mesmerized by Red Barchetta. Alex does harmonics like seemingly forever, and then later his guitar sounds like a throbbing car engine

My favorite Rush song is the title track of this album, Cygnus X-I Book II: Hemispheres. Followed by another song on this album, The Trees. Basically the entire Hemispheres album is flawless.

This is what they call headphone music. As a teen in the 80s, I used to put this on in the dark by the stereo with my big JVC headphones on and air drum the shit out of this.

My favorite song of all time. I can’t stop listening to it. Alex Lifeson’s solo in that song made me pick up guitar. One of the most underrated guitar solos of all time in my opinion. Gives me chills every time.

Leave That Thing Alone is another instrumental by Rush but this one shows off Geddy's bass playing

I always though Camera Eye was an underrated Rush song.

This is one of the greatest rock/metal instrumentals of all time. I also like "The Camera Eye", and "Spirit of Radio", and also "Big Money".

As a young drummer I bought RUSH Exit stage left as my first RUSH album. I saw his kit and went straight to the drum solo! I knew I had found my idol after hearing that! I slept ate and drank RUSH for a long time after that! I have seen them live at least three times and always amazing! One of my favorite songs is The Trees! You should check that out another Xanadu style song with some great storytelling lyrics! As a drummer still to this day I don't go long without listening to Rush, when I am not I am Listening to Dream Theater. Check out Dream Theater the Count of Tuscany if you want an epic journey with outstanding musicians!

For drums, definitely try The Spirit of Radio. Neil throws you for a loop throughout the song.

Boys, as Canadians, we always revisit this argument and my take on it is: Tom Sawyer is a classic. It can be played on the radio and it jives. It shows their capability as musicians. But dude, La Villa Strangiato shows a whole new world (Non-radio, thank you) and Neil, Geddy and Alex just play their heart out musically. It's why this is by far my favourite Rush tune. So yeah boys, although Rush has a lot of AWESOME tunes, THIS is the best. Much love to you both for throwing out these kick-ass vids.

"Hemispheres" The title track from this album is another long epic of 20+ minutes like 2112. It tells a story. A great musical story.

The great thing about Rush is it's fun to listen to the studio and then go back and listen to a live version and the live version be better than the studio. The version of this from Exit... Stage Left is the upper echelon of music. 3 guys pulling this off in studio is one thing, but pulling it off live... Amazing! That is what makes Rush... Rush. I would say Anthem is the first time I heard drums and was like what the... It's right in your face

Alex Lifeson is just amazing. Some of the most screamingly outrageous guitar work I've ever heard. Just pick the song. And, the gray tabby asleep on the pillows. So chill.

Listen to them in the early days, All The World's a Stage. This album tuned me into Neil Peart. It was 1978 when i first heard his drum solo "Ladies and gentleman. The professor of the drum kit!" That was it. By the time i was 17, i had a 13 piece Pearl drum kit with 6 cymbals and 2 hi'hats. Black of course. I'm still in mourning...

This was the first song I had ever heard where a "True" guitarist took me on a journey through his playing. To begin the solo in such a low key, yet enticing manner and build it up to the magical crescendo in a manner that has you moving to the front of your chair, is the mark of a TRUE GUITARIST! This song always leaves me emotionally spent...And I am NOT AN EMOTIONAL guy. Simply the best....

The Trees, Closer to the Heart, Subdivisions, Red Barchetta....so I first heard this song when a local band would play it in their basement....must have been 1979 cause I had my license and I would drive my crappy 1968 4 door Dodge Dart that everyone would pile in and we'd go watch the band play. Never thought the memories of those days would make me so happy now...of course I had one of my first crushes on the bass player who thought he was Geddy Lee....

"Red Sector A" off of Grace Under Pressure. It has some of Alex's best guitar work. I don't mean, flamboyant, or "showy", I just mean... best.

Way back in '78 I first heard this song, I knew I found my group. The drums had a few totally wild riffs coming out of nowhere that just put this song into the heavens

One of the all time best rock instrumentals. I think this track also features one of Alex Lifeson's best solo performances.

Peart is one of those very rare musicians that overwhelm every song with their instrument....... but you don't notice it until you make yourself listen for it. Sublime playing.

Been drumming since I was a kid in elementary school in the 70s and Rush was a game changer. I was an immediate fan of Professor Peart. This song is simply at Rock Gods status. All 3 absolutely kill it. Forget the lyrics they just slow things down.

EVERYTHING Rush does makes me appreciate drums...and bass...and guitar - they are just that kind of band! Great reaction guys (particularly loved Alex's sh!t eating grin the entire time, and your eyes bugging out of your head!). Indeed, this is a monumental instrumental, and it too certainly cemented my love for this insane power trio! Where to go from here, you ask?! My #1 Rush tune is 2112 (all 20+ minutes of it) - I liken it to Rush's version of 'Echoes' - it's an epic journey! For more of a synth ride, I'd HIGHLY recommend Subdivisions (and definitely pay attention to the lyrics on this one!). Other key notables: Mystic Rhythms, Animate, Headlong Flight, The Main Monkey Business, The Garden, Red Sector A, Losing It, Earthshine - all these and so much more need to be listened to! A thought for a 'fun' reaction vid. There are 3 songs that form part of what is called the 'Fear' trilogy - Neil wrote about 3 aspects of the human condition (negative ones), one is 'The Enemy Within' (how your fears can cripple you - from Grace Under Pressure, it's Part 1), next is 'The Weapon' (fear of external enemies - from Signals, Part 2), and then there is 'Witch Hunt' (about how mob mentality fear can be used to control the populace - from Moving Pictures, Part 3). It was released in reverse order. Doesn't really matter how you play it, but it's a must! Each song is killer! Enjoy the Rush journey gents!!

That bass solo gets me every time. I counted the notes way back in the day and it was 27 notes in 3.5 seconds! And Geddy makes it sound so effortless.

congratulations friends, great reaction to this masterpiece of Rush !! I felt very identified with you when they listened to the song, so I reacted when I heard it for the first time, greetings from Argentina.

It's nice to see the younger generation discovering this music and truly appreciating it, as you clearly do. If you want to hear a song that'll blow your mind in terms of "appreciating the drums," I recommend the live version of YYZ from the Exit Stage Left album. By the Way, Exit Stage Left has to be one of the best live rock albums ever.

Awesome video guys! ...and to think that they were such music perfectionists that they wanted to capture this recording in one take for the album. Think about that for minute. Error free! Think of how many times they'd have to play it through. This was also in 1978. This track is in my top 10 all time faves.

Saw these guys live many times. They were the real deal. And if you are wondering, yes they even play the keyboards live using bass pedals and drum triggers etc. Their live performances are awesome. Finally, more Rush! 😎🎸🤪 I love watching you react - so expressive - I can tell you guys feel the music! Watch Neil’s drum solo at the end of YYZ! That video got all over the early music sharing apps and seeing him at work adds another level! Another is early live performances of 2112 when those guys were so obviously high while in concert - watching him is crazy! One Little Victory might be the most intense drumming in a Rush song. Circumstances is a cool kind of chaos on drums, but more bass mixed in...

Great videos! I’ve been a Rush fanatic since I was 12 (Geddy is the reason I picked up the bass at 13) and I’ll be 50 this year. I’ve seen them live over 60 times and was blown away every time. Sadly they’ve retired but they gave us the best rock music ever! Three amazing musicians and amazing people. I had the privilege of meeting Geddy twice. Once when he did a CD signing for his solo album My Favorite Headache and just this past December in Ridgewood NJ at a store called Bookends where he was signing his new book Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Book of Bass.

The first song that really made me appreciate drums is The Who's Baba O'Reilly. Keith Moon was insane on that. The next one is Led Zeppelin's Moby Dick. But once I heard Rush 2112 I was hooked as a Neil Peart fan along with Geddy and Alex.

My mind is blown every time I hear this song.

By the way... at 8:16... Alex took that guitar riff directly from (more than one !) old 40's and 50's Warner Bros. cartoons where at times machinery was involved.

That’s awesome. I also listened to this song in the 7th grade. But I had to do it on an 8 Track. :D I wore that tape out. To this day Hemispheres is my all time favorite Rush album. I also saw them for the first time on this tour. I was hooked ever since.

First time I heard this song it made the hair on my arms stand up. 30 years later, it still does. RUSH is just one of those very few bands. Amazing musicianship, masterclass in every instrument, and genuinely humble men. I'm not only from their hometown city, but also their neighborhood. Hometown pride. Fan for live, they were the soundtrack of my entire youth.

Best tracks for me, can not put them in order (sure I forget some too): Xanadu Yyz Red Barchetta Tom Sayer Spirit of the radio La Villa Strangiato Free Will The Trees Jacobs Ladder Closer to the heart Passage to Bangkok Lakeside park If it is on Exit Stage Left, then that is better version than studio. Its ok to listen studio versions first. They are simpler - like for La Villa Strangiato, they tried to record it like 40 times, and were not satisfied. They gave up. In ESL you can hear, what this song became, after a few years of touring. This is true for several Rush songs, and reason why they are considered live band. Their material is complicated and took even them time to fully master. To exaggerate, studio versions could be called drafts. Xanadu is a great example. Studio version is great, but it is not there yet. Don't get me wrong, studio version gets 10/10, but ESL version is pure magic. There is not one note that is not serving the song as a whole. After Moving Pictures things got different. Be warned!
